Happy New Year everyone!
As the title says, I'd like to start my phone in recovery mode so I can flash a new ROM on it...being a total noob here, I have no clue on how to do that...any help available please?
Thanks so much
If you have all the pre-requisites (root, s-off and/or radio s-off, clockworkmod recovery installed), you go to recovery either by
a) Enter the ROM Manager app and click "Reboot to Recovery"
b) Reboot the phone while holding the "volume down" button, this will take you to your bootloader. Scroll to highlight "RECOVERY" (with volume buttons) and press the power button to select it.
That's it

Thanks tmh, it looks like I have to "have all the pre-requisites" first then...now how to I do all that...is there any "how to" guide for that?
Quite a few guides if you head on into the Desire HD Android Development forum. There are guides for for rooting, installing eng hboot, radio s-off, custom recovery etc. there. And a nice "glossary" as well, if things like s-off and stuff is jibberish to you, as it was to me when I got my DHD (came from a Hero)
Do note though, that if you updated your DHD with the latest OTA update (firmware 1.72.something), you CAN NOT root it yet, and therefor not install any of the other pre-requisites for installing custom ROM's.
uhmm...I just got it yesterday so I haven't touched any of that stuff yet I guess I need to find out what exactly am I running now and then take it from there...but first of all I have to figre out what "root" means...lol
thanks so much for the quick answers
Then I suggest you start out by reading this thread then, as it explains most of the terms you'll encounter on your way to installing a custom ROM
Don't accept any ota updates either. Otherwise you will become just another user who can't get root.

Hello guys... I *think* i have all the prerequisities, but when I boot into recovery from Rom Manager, the phone just shows me a picture of the phone with a red exclamation mark inside a triangle... any ideas what that is?
Thanks!
thanks, was looking for this
Ah darn, I got it now: I have to press vol. up and power and I get the menu.
However, I have an error message:
E:Can't open cache/recovery/command
Also, the image (filename: r2-update-modacocustomrom-ace-sense-signed.ZIP) does not appear in the list, only an update.zip. So what do I do?
Thanks again...
PS I wiped the cache folder, made sure its empty through ES Explorer, but the same problem persists....
PS2 Current recovery: Clockworkmod 2.5.1.3

You can't be on Clockworkmod 2.5.1.3 because the red triange is the stock recovery!
Are you 100% sure you have permanent root and either radio s-off or eng hboot s-off?
If you only have root, and not some form of s-off then rom manager will report you have flashed CWM correctly but the stock recovery will be restored when you reboot.

Thanks - that was an eye opener! Rom Manager reported that current recovery was the one stated, even after reboot, so I assumed all was correct.
I had used Easy Radio Tool 2.2 a couple of times, choosing the first option (Radio S-OFF, Super-CID and SimUnlock (usual)), and it reported success. Then I tried only doing Radio S-OFF and it worked first time around...
Thanks for your input!
krakout I had the same problem as you. I rooted my DHD installed Rom Manager then install Clockworkmod. Next I tried to back up my rom and got an phone with a triangle sign.
Then I went into the recover menu and it was the stock one not Clockworkmod. I solved this issue by flashing Clockworkmod again after using Easy Radio Tool 2.2 and choosing the first option (Radio S-OFF, Super-CID and SimUnlock (usual))

Yes - indeed, as mentioned above, even if ROM Manager reports that it has flashed the custom recovery, this is not always the case...

Hi!
i've got a big problem with my HTC Desire Device. I flashed Ginger Villain 0.6 (or so) some days/weeks ago and updated to 0.8 some days ago but forgot to wipe data&cache. Today I tried to start the clockworkmod recoverysystem to restore my nandroid backup from Ginger Villain 0.6 (because of a note stored in "note everything" which wasn't working anymore after the update to Ginger Villain 0.8.
When i try to start the recovery system, i only get a red exclamation picture. I did a factory reset and then ROM Manager was gone and I wasn't able to reinstall it through market. I managed to install ROM Manager trough a manually downloaded .apk file. When I start the ROM Manager and install the Recovery system, everything goes fine but (i choose my device, get the message that ROM Manager where granted root priviliges) but when i try again to start into the recovery system i get the red exclamation mark again. I also tried to run unrevoked3 again, it pushes the recovery system and then it says that it cant get root (firmware too new?) anyway i have root privileges, it seems that error message doesn't matter.
any advice?
thank you
do you have s-off, you could try reflashing the clockworkmod recovery from fastboot
someone else reported clockworkmod just randomly dissapeering and it was the same rom too :/
hope theres not a bug
if you dont have s-off then the only thing i think you can do is reinstall an RUU, Re-root it and then restore the nandroid
Thanks for your reply. Whats s-off? How do i reflash the ruu? With the original exe from htc website?
just realised something, you mention rom manager quite alot
have you tried accessing recovery via hboot?
voldown+power then select recovery via volume rocker and select with power button.
what version of hboot are you on? did you use unrevoked to root the device or an older method?
Yes i tried accessing recovery via hboot, its v 0.80 i think. I rooted my device with an older method than unrevoked, but i dont remember how
I verified my hboot version: 0.80
ahh ok this makes sense now
you used fake flash to get to recovery
your latest rom does not like fake flash boot from rom manager ive seen this before)
so basically you need to do the following
download this file
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5684959/stuff/recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.7-bravo.zip
rename it to update.zip
place it on the root of your sdcard
boot to recovery using voldown + power (then select recovery with vol down and press power)
when you get to the screen with the exclamation hold vol up and press power.
you will be greeted with the blue engineering recovery
select apply update.zip and it should take you to clockwork mod where you can restor/backup what you need
you problem is that rom manager doesnt like the new build and because youve not used the original root method for so long you have forgotten
you can find someone with the same problem here
http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/253957-rom-manager-problems.html
any luck!!!!
Hi! That sounds very good but i haven't had time yet to try these steps, i'll report back soon.

You still have the stock recovery installed. DId you try to install ClockWorkMod Recovery yet? If yes, you did try to install CWM recovery already it means it didn't stick , sometimes you have to do it a couple of times before it sticks (and I'm talking about ClockworkMod recovery). If you have not installed ClockWorkMod recovery yet , first download Rom Manager from the market ( I see you already have it) , then open it , go into menu/settings and select erase recovery, then go back to the main page of rom manager and select FLash ClockworkMod recovery, a sub menu will pop up with your model phone on it, select it, after it is finish select reboot into recovery, if you still see the ! mark it means it didn't stick, pull the battery and reinstall it, then go back into rom manager and flash recovery again, sometime it take a couple of tries before it sticks. Once it sticks and you reboot into recovery and you see CWM recovery 2.5.1.3 screen, then you can go back into rom manager and flash your custom rom or you can do it from the recovery screen as long as you have the custom rom on the root of your sdcard.
Remember you need S-off for it to work, it will not work with temp root.
Mine is not temp root mine is perm root and isit a must to have S-OFF? Cause mine is still S-ON maybe thats the problem?

Yes, and yes. S-ON would allow you to manually enter Clockwork Recovery by getting to the recovery menu you're currently seeing, and then flashing it using the "install update.zip" method. I wouldn't worry about going through all of that though. Just do the S-OFF, and then Flash Recovery from ROM Manager and you'll be set.

If you still have S-on you are not perm rooted. You must have S-off to flash a custom rom and a custom recovery.
Alright thanks guys finally did S-OFF and it works. THANKS!!

You have to find the proper key patch for your version of the Desire Z and apply it.

How do I find the key patch?
EDIT: Got it working.
Hello XDA.
I've tried to update my radio in CWM with install .zip thing, but it doesn't really work (i think, not sure how to test it). I've tried a lot of guides and they say "go to hboot menu -> bootloader -> recovery and a red triangle should be on the screen" but i only get the Alpharev Joker? Help please!
Go into recovery
Choose install zip from sd
Choose zip from sd
Confirm
Reboot
You can check your radio version under 'about phone' in the settings.

Are you s-off/have a custom hboot? If yes, make you do not have a hboot which partition size is smaller than 40 mb. Otherwise you cannot lfash radio via recovery, you have to do it via fastboot.

You can test by looking in the "about phone" menu and seeing whether your radio ("baseband") version has changed. But as others have said, if you've changed your hboot and shrunk your cache partition you must not try flashing a radio via recovery. But as long as you've not done that you should be OK, though you can use fastboot anyway.
Those guides you are looking at are seriously out of date! Anyone who rooted using unrevoked (i.e. since about August 2010) will have a custom recovery permanently installed, so will not see the red triangle (which is the original HTC recovery). Anyone who still has that should IMO replace it with a proper custom recovery, which being S-Off you can do using fastboot if you need to.
If you have a custom recovery installed you get into it by selecting recovery from the hboot menu, not bootloader.
The easiest way to change the radio through AndroidFlasher

Hi guys i hope that someone can help me!
I have a problem with ClockworkMod 3.2.0.0 because when I go into recovery from hboot ClockworkMod opens but when I select "install zip from sd card" only the background remains with the hat and I do not select the files in the sd.
Even when I select "power down" the phone is switched on and still remains on the screen with the hat.
How about pressing power button when on the hat icon and then pressing trackpad . Try them and you will know.

I had not thought!! Thanks very much mate!!
Hello guys!
I have exactly the opposite problem.
I rooted and s-off my phone following these instructions:
baert.ulyssis.be/ 2010/ 10/ 13/ wildpuzzle-rom-for-htc-wildfire/
(sorry for spaces, but the forum doesn't allow me to psot the link otherwise).
Then I installed SuperUser and then ROM Manager, in order to flash a new ROM. Then ROM-Manager "told" that my CWM Recovery 3.0.0.6 was incompatible or something like that and it should automatically download and flash Recovery 2.5.0.7. I allowed it to download the new Recovery and proceeded with installing my ROM (WildPuzzleROM_2.2.1 v0.8) successfully.
Every time I needed to access Recovery 2.5.0.7, I just open ROM-Manager and chose "Reboot into Recovery", and it always rebooted into Recovery 2.5.0.7. But today I tried to access Recovery by rebooting and holding down volume button. And it loaded Recovery 3.0.0.6. I turned off the phone, re-opened it, went to ROM-Manager and chose again "Reboot into Recovery" and it loaded Recovery 2.5.0.7.
So apparently my phone has two versions of Recovery. It loads version 3.0.0.6 when I reboot with the volume button and it loads version 2.5.0.7 through ROM-Manager. And I need ONLY Recovery 2.5.0.7, because the other version crashes (error message: "Amend Scripting is deprecated by Google in Cupcake...etc etc") every time I tried to flash new ROMs and I read somewhere in the forums that this happens because of the 3.x version of Recovery.
So here comes my question: How do I remove Recovery 3.0.0.6 and keep ONLY 2.5.0.7 ?
Thank you all very much, beforehand!
You can do so by using fastboot to manualy flash the old recovery using the command "fastboot flash recovery <path to recovery>recovery.img". If you do not now how to use fastboot, you have to search the forum a bit (can't give you any links as I'm using the xda app).
But for your problem: it is all normal. ROM Manager launches indeed some kind of temporary recovery, which is stored on your sdcard.
But you better rethink about downgrading your recovery: there is a reason why people we are now on v4 of clockworkmod some bugs are fixed (for example, now you can charge your phone when its off - isn't possible with any version of CWM lower then v3) and the menu is better, with more and handy options. The only reason why we keep using the old CWM is because of its ability to flash "old" zipfiles.
So in my opion, it is not worthet to downgrade CWM. You gain much more with the new one, and it is really no effort to flash your "old" zip files with the use of ROM Manager.

Obviously you were right on the part that I should actually upgrade my CWM Recovery instead of downgrading it. And the main reason for this, proved to be that my former version had a charging bug. If I charged the phone while switched off, it wouldn't switch on, unless I removed the battery.
Anyway, I followed your advise and flashed Clockwork 4.0.1.4.110720. But the charging problem was still there, so I tried several versions of CWM, till I finally found that for my case Clockworkmod Recovery v3.2.0.0 was the best option.

Sounds like you probably aren't rooted but you also should try using unrevoked 3.22 rather than 3.32. Below is a section from a guide I posted for rooting your inc.(that is if you were unable to flash recovery.img) hope it helps

Step 2: Flash Clockwork Recovery to your phone
You now need to download a few more files and place them somewhere that will be easy to find.
Unrevoked 3.22 from Mediafire – NOTE: if this link ever becomes broken, you must use version 3.22, 3.32 will NOT work.
Clockwork 5.0.2.0 from PvilleComp.com – make sure you use clockwork 5.0.2.0 with md5: e8ac35ddc1c37000bb0852d1f380b5bb
Next, run unrevoked 3.22, as an administrator if you can. And click file>Custom Recovery… and select the .img file which is inside the Clockwork 5.0.2.0 .zip that you downloaded, you may need to extract the folder first.
Next you can plug in your phone and select charge only and then go to Settings>Applications>development> and enable debugging.
Unrevoked should now recognize your phone and bring up a warning dialogue. Click ok and Unrevoked will run and flash Clockwork 5.0.2.0 to your phone. Do not touch your phone until you see a terminal-like screen on your phone in all blue text on a black background.
you can navigate clockwork using the scroll button at the bottom of your droid incredible to navigate and center-click for “enter”.

Which is the working version of CWM? Thanks so much in advance!

Double check that's your version of CWM, which should work. Your symptoms are standard for an older version of CWM on a SLCD screen. To be safe, go into ROM Manager, advanced options, and check erase recovery. Then reflash CWM 5.0.2.0.
Thanks for the suggestion..it didn't work. I flashed older CWMs and AmonRa but I still get the black screen with CWM logo. Thinking of:
- Fastboot erase recovery
- push recovery image
- then reflash CWM through ROM Manager?
Thoughts? Thanks again for the help!
K
Wait, black screen with CWM logo? That means you're in it, but pressed the power button at the main menu. Try pressing the power button once to get out of that when you see the logo.
Yeah..It seems like I can't select the options in the menu though I can toggle through. Its weird...even flashing the other cwm versions does the same thing.
SOLVED: Didn't realize you were supposed to use the trackpad to select..I kept pressing power...(that's how it is done on MoPho). Thanks for your help!
