[Q] [S] Clockworkmod Recovery - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I downgraded from 2.3.4 to 2.2, unlocked bootloader, and rooted with unrevoked 3.32 and no matter what I do, Clockworkmod Recovery won't install. I tried with unrevoked, using command prompt, and through rom manager. Its unlocked with s-off.
With unrevoked, I tried installing clockwork 5.0.2.0 and when i start clockwork, i just get the clockwork logo.
using command prompt, I get the FAILED remote access:denied
and rom manager replies with unable to get permissions box.
...Please help

Sounds like you probably aren't rooted but you also should try using unrevoked 3.22 rather than 3.32. Below is a section from a guide I posted for rooting your inc.(that is if you were unable to flash recovery.img) hope it helps

Step 2: Flash Clockwork Recovery to your phone
You now need to download a few more files and place them somewhere that will be easy to find.
Unrevoked 3.22 from Mediafire – NOTE: if this link ever becomes broken, you must use version 3.22, 3.32 will NOT work.
Clockwork 5.0.2.0 from PvilleComp.com – make sure you use clockwork 5.0.2.0 with md5: e8ac35ddc1c37000bb0852d1f380b5bb
Next, run unrevoked 3.22, as an administrator if you can. And click file>Custom Recovery… and select the .img file which is inside the Clockwork 5.0.2.0 .zip that you downloaded, you may need to extract the folder first.
Next you can plug in your phone and select charge only and then go to Settings>Applications>development> and enable debugging.
Unrevoked should now recognize your phone and bring up a warning dialogue. Click ok and Unrevoked will run and flash Clockwork 5.0.2.0 to your phone. Do not touch your phone until you see a terminal-like screen on your phone in all blue text on a black background.
you can navigate clockwork using the scroll button at the bottom of your droid incredible to navigate and center-click for “enter”.

I also had issues using unrevoked and had to do it manually... Good luck

Hi guys,
I'm really new to the HTC Incredible..coming from the Motorola Photon.....finally rooted, downgraded, and installed CWM, but I still get the black screen when selecting options, ie., advanced, backup and restore...tried using ROM Manager and was able to do a back up..I'm a little confused here. Which is the working version of CWM? Thanks so much in advance!
K
EDIT: Sorry failed to mention that I am on CWM version 5.0.2.0
Thanks again!

Double check that's your version of CWM, which should work. Your symptoms are standard for an older version of CWM on a SLCD screen. To be safe, go into ROM Manager, advanced options, and check erase recovery. Then reflash CWM 5.0.2.0.

Thanks for the suggestion..it didn't work. I flashed older CWMs and AmonRa but I still get the black screen with CWM logo. Thinking of:
- Fastboot erase recovery
- push recovery image
- then reflash CWM through ROM Manager?
Thoughts? Thanks again for the help!
K

Wait, black screen with CWM logo? That means you're in it, but pressed the power button at the main menu. Try pressing the power button once to get out of that when you see the logo.

Yeah..It seems like I can't select the options in the menu though I can toggle through. Its weird...even flashing the other cwm versions does the same thing.
SOLVED: Didn't realize you were supposed to use the trackpad to select..I kept pressing power...(that's how it is done on MoPho). Thanks for your help!

Hmmm... By selecting the options you wouldn't be pressing the power button, would you? Have you tried pressing the OJ to select instead?

Yeah that little trackpad was the way to select..I was pressing power...so used to that..LOL

Using Rom manager to get the update yes then flashing the update zip in clockworkmod recovery itself

As far as I'm aware, the ROM Manager recovery is a "fake flash" mechanism, and you always need to enter recovery via ROM manager (or manually flash the update.zip)
If you want a permanent recovery image, you need to flash via Unrevoked.
Could be wrong, but that's my understanding anyway. I don't pay too much attention because I don't use ROM Manager much.
Regards,
Dave
Desire was rooted via unrevoked ages ago. I use a widget to enter recovery. I then manually flash the clockworkmod recovery update zip which then updates clockworkmod to the latest version. I then reboot. ROM manager says I am at latest version I have just flashed however if I then enter recovery again, via any method, clockworkmod recovery has reverted back to old version as if I haven't flashed the update.

So you are saying that if you select "Reboot into Recovery" from ROM Manager, you end up in the recovery you flashed via Unrevoked?
If I go into recovery from ROM manager, I can see that it first "fake flashes" recovery and then boots into it. Going into recovery via Power +Vol Down, I boot into HBOOT from which I select Recovery - I then end up in the recovery image from Unrevoked.

no, i am saying that i can only reboot into that latest clockworkmod recovery, which is 2.5.0.7, if i reboot into recovery via ROM manager.
if i reboot via hboot or a reboot widget such as SwitchPro all i get is the version of clockworkmod recovery installed when i unrevoked, which is 2.5.0.1.
clockworkmod recovery doesnt recognise that i have flashed the update zip if i reboot into recovery via hboot or switchpro.
what i want is to be able to reboot into the latest version of clockworkmod recovery without using Rom manager.
dont worry i have figured out its not possible to keep the updated clockworkmod recovery because unrevoked doesnt unlock permanently the NAND flash chip. so even though its been updated when the new version of clockworkmod is flashed it doesnt stick.

And that is *absolutely* the correct behaviour, and is the point I alluded to my original post.
If you want to permanently update the recovery image on your phone to 2.5.0.7, you need to use Unrevoked again and select a custom recovery image (note these needs to be an IMG file, not a ZIP!).
Simply flashing the update.zip merely boots you into the new recovery, it doesn't actually flash the new recovery - hence the name, Fake Flash!

Dave

yeah i know its the correct behaviour, i just wasnt sure why other reboot methods didnt reboot into the newest version, now i know.
the latest version of unrevoked, v3.14 includes clockworkmod recover 2.5.07 as its default image anyway.
as i am already rooted using unrevoked can i just use unrevoked again? ie nandroid backup>root again with latest version of unrevoked>restore nandroid backup? will that work do you think?

Yes - it should be fine. You shouldn't technically need to backup/restore either since only recovery is affected.

[Q] help

Successfully rooted my phone yesterday, but was unable to flash Android 2.2. After fastboot checks pc36img it just goes back to fastboot screen. Was there a problem with unrevoked3 or clockworkmod?
If you are trying to flash a rom, you need to do that from recovery. What exactly have you done to your phone so far, which root method did you use?
I used the method for rooting Eco 4g with Android 2.2 I rooted the phone through to Android 2.1 then with unrevoked3 then copied clockworkmod files to the sdcard
But have u actually installed a recovery yet? You have to push a recovery through ADB or use a terminal emulator.

I thought clockworkmod was a recovery when I go into recovery it is a clockworkmod version

So you have root, you have your recovery, what is it you are trying to do now?

Yes but more so the update zip I think the recovery flashed correctly, the guide says to go to hboot and the phone checks for pc36img, but once it does instead of asking me if I want to apply update it just go back to fastboot
If you're already rooted why r u trying to flash a pc36 image?

You don't need to flash PC136.img to get android 2.2. If you're fully rooted with recovery you can flash any ROM that uses Froyo and you'll have 2.2

You don't flash a rom with a pc36img. Download your 2.2 rooted rom and place it on the root directory of your SD card. Also, make sure you delete the pc36img on your card so your phone doesnt keep searching for it later. Turn the phone off. Boot into recovery by holding down volume and power at the same until until the white bootloader screen appears. Select recovery. Then select wipe/factory reset, then select wipe cache. Then select install zip from SD card. Scroll to your rom and select it, confirm yes when it asks, and wait for it to finish flashing. Once it's done it will say install complete. Then select reboot system now. Your done.

I'm starting to get confused here.....
1. Are you sure that you're rooted?
2. Are you sure you have successfully flashed a recovery?
3. Have you copied the .zip of the ROM you want to flash to the root of your SD card and booted in to recovery and tried to flash the .zip?
Sorry for the confusion, but I'm new to this, I'm positive I'm rooted and that I have clockworkmod recovery installed. I copied 2.2 root zip from my desktop to the root of my sdcard along with the pc36img and busybox. All three where part of the download link from the guide
Where is this guide at that you are following? If we can see where you are at, then maybe we can help get you back on track with what you are trying to do.

I assume you're at this part of part 2?
Step 3: After choosing NO to the reboot, you will see a menu again. Select Bootloader from the menu, then use the Volume Down button to hover over "Recovery" and press Power to click on it.
If your phone gets stuck at the White EVO 4G screen, pull your battery, and then power on while holding volume down again. It should boot to the bootloader again, where you can select recovery.
Once you are booted into this custom recovery, go to
It's supposed to go back to your menu (the white menu with the 3 green androids on skateboards) after scanning the PC36.img This is where you boot in to "recovery" Once in recovery, you can flash the 2.2.zip I have to say I've never used Clockwork so I'm not exactly sure if it's all the same menu. I've always used AmonRA
Not sure how i'm tucking it up, but the phone doesn't ask me if I want to reboot or if I want to apply the update what I do know is that if choose recovery and flash 2.2 it says install complete, but when I boot up i'm still in 2.1

clockworkmod 2.5.0.5 to 2.5.1.2

so im on .0.5 and i seen that there is a 1.2 version available.. i've had no problems before or currently with .0.5, but i'm curious to the changelog of 1.2.. i'm not finding any info on it.. anything that would blow my mind or offer benefits.. much thanks..
I can confirm that it has optical trackpad scroll and works with SLCD screens.
No problems here either. Flashed a ROM, a kernel, a theme with 2.5.1.2 then restored a backup made with 2.5.0.5.
Ditto with the above. Flashed old backup using the new version of clockwork

I also can't get into recovery after flashing the new clockworkmod. Will boot into hboot but when I try to boot into recovery I get stuck at the HTC Incredible white screen.

It's working fine for me. I opened up ROM Manager to do a back up and it prompted me to update CWM. I did it. Have rebooted into recovery a few times to be sure and have made a backup. Also the optical trackpad works MUCH faster and better in this version.

It might be a SLCD-related brick issue. On the previous version of CWM (2.5.0.5), you could flash a mod by (koush? adrynalyne? sp?) on top to get it working.
(I can't post links yet, so if you google "Rooting stock 2.2 using unrEVOked 3.22" it will be the first link, it's on incredibleforum, Step 3A of the OP)
Alternatively, putting BAMod on the root of your SD card works (if you don't get revoked tool etc to run cos it won't boot up) to start up your phone again into recovery. Remember to rename to "PB31IMG.zip"

[Q] How do I start my Desire hd in recovery mode?

Happy New Year everyone!
As the title says, I'd like to start my phone in recovery mode so I can flash a new ROM on it...being a total noob here, I have no clue on how to do that...any help available please?
Thanks so much
If you have all the pre-requisites (root, s-off and/or radio s-off, clockworkmod recovery installed), you go to recovery either by
a) Enter the ROM Manager app and click "Reboot to Recovery"
b) Reboot the phone while holding the "volume down" button, this will take you to your bootloader. Scroll to highlight "RECOVERY" (with volume buttons) and press the power button to select it.
That's it

Thanks tmh, it looks like I have to "have all the pre-requisites" first then...now how to I do all that...is there any "how to" guide for that?
Quite a few guides if you head on into the Desire HD Android Development forum. There are guides for for rooting, installing eng hboot, radio s-off, custom recovery etc. there. And a nice "glossary" as well, if things like s-off and stuff is jibberish to you, as it was to me when I got my DHD (came from a Hero)
Do note though, that if you updated your DHD with the latest OTA update (firmware 1.72.something), you CAN NOT root it yet, and therefor not install any of the other pre-requisites for installing custom ROM's.
uhmm...I just got it yesterday so I haven't touched any of that stuff yet I guess I need to find out what exactly am I running now and then take it from there...but first of all I have to figre out what "root" means...lol
thanks so much for the quick answers
Then I suggest you start out by reading this thread then, as it explains most of the terms you'll encounter on your way to installing a custom ROM
Don't accept any ota updates either. Otherwise you will become just another user who can't get root.

You can't be on Clockworkmod 2.5.1.3 because the red triange is the stock recovery!
Are you 100% sure you have permanent root and either radio s-off or eng hboot s-off?
If you only have root, and not some form of s-off then rom manager will report you have flashed CWM correctly but the stock recovery will be restored when you reboot.

Thanks - that was an eye opener! Rom Manager reported that current recovery was the one stated, even after reboot, so I assumed all was correct.
I had used Easy Radio Tool 2.2 a couple of times, choosing the first option (Radio S-OFF, Super-CID and SimUnlock (usual)), and it reported success. Then I tried only doing Radio S-OFF and it worked first time around...
Thanks for your input!
krakout I had the same problem as you. I rooted my DHD installed Rom Manager then install Clockworkmod. Next I tried to back up my rom and got an phone with a triangle sign.
Then I went into the recover menu and it was the stock one not Clockworkmod. I solved this issue by flashing Clockworkmod again after using Easy Radio Tool 2.2 and choosing the first option (Radio S-OFF, Super-CID and SimUnlock (usual))

[Q] Problem with CWM 5.0.2.0 stable installation.

Actually, I got no place to post my question. So, I thought of starting a new thread.
I have installed CyanogenMod 7 on my HTC buzz by downgrading its stock rom as it suffered a OTA update before. I guess you guys r well aware about the process.
During the downgrade, my phone got Revolutionary CWM 4.x.x.x by default. In fact, I have flashed CM7 using revolutionary.
Now, CM7 comes with ROM Manager built-in and I tried to install CWM 5.0.2.0 recovery right form the GUI. The update.zip was downloaded. I could update it manually form my recovery options.
But, it was not stable. Each time I boot into recovery, Revolutionary CWM shows up, instead of CWM 5.0.2.0. To use it again, I have update the package each and every time.
Is is quite normal? Or, I am missing something? Plz help with advice.:crying:
I did this via Rom manager. Not through Recovery.

Yes this is normal for ROM manager as using ROM manager is only giving you a temp recovery over your stock ( in your case revolutionary cwm ) to get the cwm 5.0.2.0 you want you need to get either a PC49IMG.zip version of the cwm and use the boot loader method, use ADB/Fast boot method or use the terminal emulator method.
Tutorials are all over the wildfire thread and so are the necessary files etc.

For permanent recovery, copy the recovery onto your pc.

Type fastboot flash recovery name.zip
here name is the name of recovery zip AS IT IS.
