Greetings..
For the life of me I cannot copy a new ROM to my phone.
When attempting USB transfer, I get about 90 megs transfered then it it stalls.. eventually getting
Error 0x80070079: The semaphore timeout period has expired
I am running win7 64
I have the USB drivers installed on the machine (which aren't necessary as I understand), at least not for transfer.
Samsung Epic running Viper ROM Trinity
In the past, I've copied big files to the phone as well as about 3 gigs of music (not all at once)
It seems that small files work.. I have not determined exactly how big a file needs to be to actually fail though.. Something's wrong..
Jeeze.. a 600 dollar phone should be able to act as amass storage device without all these problems. soo frustrating..
I recently just formatted the SD card.. still no go
I've attempted connecting to a Mac but the phone shuts off when attempting to mount USB..
All use to work.. but not now..
Anyideas?
fix
I've had the same problem before and there was 2 solutions. the first is using a microsd card reader, which is much faster to move things back in forth. The second solution would be running an adb push command. This would involve setting up the android debugging bridge via the sdk then putting your phone in debugging mode. Then create a path to the tools file in the sdk and type the command adb push with the path next to it and then a space and then/sdcard/. For example it would look something like this
c:\Users\stephen> cd\androidSDK\tools
c:\androidsdk\tools> adb push c:\users\stephen\downloads\email.apk /sdcard/
that would be to push an email app to my sccard that was in my downloads folder on my pc/
I have the same.problem with the stock USB cable. I use my wife's evo cord and its awesome. Get another USB cable

Wow.. ok.. I'll replace mine asap!
Thanks
No problem. I found this out when I was trying to save my sd card contents to my computer and I couldn't transfer the big files. I tried like 15 times and it kept locking up. I then tried my wifes evo USB cable and it worked perfectly even for an 8gb file!!!
Tried by friends cable.. BOINK! Worked like a charm!
Another option is to use something like Wifi File Explorer to transfer files to the phone over wifi.
I have the same problem from time to time and I don't think is the cable cuz sometimes works sometime don't it's Samsung overall I think and this is with different cables on different PC's that is happening.

So, I've played with this thing for 4 hours and I'm about to throw it at the wall.
This is my wife's evo. I rooted it like a year ago when she got it. Shortly after she settled on a CM7 ROM she liked and I haven't touched the phone for 6 months or more. She used my Epic the other day that has the latests ACS SyndicateFrozen ROM on it and she now wants an epic because she likes the ROM so much. I'm trying to appease her by putting ACS' Elite ROM on her EVO.
I started by trying to plug her phone in to my PC, the one I originally used to root it way back when. The drivers are already installed on here. My PC acknowledges that I plugged the phone in, but I cannot view the file directory in My Computer. I then go to the phone and it says USB Debugging enabled, and gives me the option to disable. Neither way allows me to read the phones files. I've tried 2 aftermarket cables (not the HTC one). I've tried updating the HTC Sync software, although she doesn't use it. I also tried installing the HTC Sync software and drivers on my laptop and using that PC, same problem. I've thumbed thru the phones menu for hours and haven't found anything that is turned off that shouldn't be. When I plugged the phone into my laptop after installing the drivers, it acknowledged the phone, said installing drivers, and then confirmed drivers were installed successfully.
All I want to do is access the SD card so I can drop a ROM on it and reflash her phone. This is turning into a nightmare! The CM7 ROM on there now has been giving her random issues for the past month, any chance this is the cause?
I'm hoping there is something stupidly obvious that I'm overlooking.
Thanks for your help!
Reboot into recovery, while connected to your computer, and then select the USB-MS option. Your computer should recognize the card as a drive and give you access to it.

Some other alternatives would be to download the rom directly from the phone, pull the SD card out and put it in a card reader, or use one of the wireless file transfer apps found in the market.
I'm using King's Alliance ROM and have had that same issue on both 7.5 and 7.6 versions. I have one of those Sprint Battery Boost devices that allow you to put an SD card in them and use it as a jump drive, so I do that instead. I would use a simple SD adapter card but the sandisk adapter i have always says it's protected somehow and won't let me transfer ROMs to it. Sorry I don;t have a solution, but I feel for ya

This worked after 7 or 8 tries of toggling USB-MS. It finally connected to the computer saying it was only a USB1.1 device instead of USB2.0. Got the files copied, gonna wipe it tonight.
Thanks for the help!

Did you try setting phone to the PTP mode which is like a camera just to transfer files? You could rename a tar to jpg

It should automatically prompt you to view internal and external sd cards on your pc. Are you rooted?

i have this problem on XP sometimes too, even with the drivers installed.
Try changing it from MTP to PTP. Let the computer find it again, then switch it back to MTP. Works for me every time

hi chrisram... it doesnt prompt me for anything. i installed the snapdragon toolkit. i got xp and when i go into windows explorer, i see files on the phone, but not on the sd card. i tried also to install samsung driver 1.4.6.0 and i get a "MTP was not installed" error. and on the phone i get a pop up saying that i need windows media player 10 or higher, which i have installed.
and to answer your question, i am not rooted. DO I HAVE TO BE ROOTED TO VIEW FILES ON THE SD CARD ON MY PC VIA USB? please help because i'm on the verge on stomping on this galaxy s3. thanks,
You don't need root to view files in your phone. Did you put an SD card in there?

i seriously dont want to use airdroid.. i need to move heavy files and i dont want to spend years by my PC waiting for my phone to finish transferring files over the air.. i want to be able to see my sd card via usb.
thanks for the encouragement.. i know i'll get a solution with your help..
Fair enough. What if you do install windows media player 11 and see what that does?
Sent from my SGH-T999
Um the sdcard can only write at about say max 80Mbps sustained. WLAN will be fast enough at 40.. what is USB2.0?
Anyways if you are putting lots of files, leave them on external, and don't have to worry about copying again. No good reason to have then on sdcard vs external.
You can just copy to ext then use any file mgr program to copy it using the phone.

I use N so it's 100mbps and fast enough to not notice any difference. I'm guessing your problem is that XP is old as F. A simple solution is to just plug the sd card into your computer. But as it was pointed out the sd card is slower than wifi so it really doesn't matter.
Oh and I'd just like to point out you could have moved the files 10000 times by now. With airdroid you can move around the house while files are transferring. So you can relax and still use the phone instead of being tethered to the computer. And if you have splashtop you'd never even have to touch your PC.
Put Linux on a flash drive and use that?
my phone connects to my computer fine, but whenever I try to copy a file to the phone or SD card I'm getting an error saying, "Cannot copy item. The device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected." anyone know what I'm overlooking?
Do you have the proper drivers installed on your pc?

I've found that the cable that came with my Note 2 doesn't connect very well. It has the same problem you are describing and it wouldn't continuously charge either.
I used one of my other micro USB to USB cables and it solved the problem. Whats weird tho is the cable that came with my phone works fine to charge my girlfriends tablet. I think there is a connection problem where it doesn't securely fit into the note 2.
Don't know if this helps but changing the cable solved my issue:good:
Yeah maybe is a problem with USB cable or drivers, but when it happens to me, I just copy the files on folders not loose files..e.g if I'm copying a ROM.zip it wont let me do it but if I put that zip inside a folder then it will work

turns out the files I was trying to copy were corrupt or something- other files transfer fine. I also redownloaded those files and they transferred fine.
When trying to transfer stuff to my phone using my main PC with Windows 7 (laptop with XP works fine) I have trouble copying stuff to the memory card on the phone. I'm using SGS3 Easy UMS, the card shows up fine in Windows but when copying stuff across it either just gets stuck at Calculating... or might copy a couple of files then stop.
Taking the card out and putting it in my card reader works fine too, and like I said, no problems with my XP laptop. Any ideas what might be wrong? Same happens from CWM using UMS.
I've started doing some Android software development and the PC upstairs is having problems remotely installing the built program to my Note II, ADB recognises the phone as does Eclipse but when it tries to install the app it just times out.
On my laptop now and it's working fine. Tried running an app 3 times, closing Eclipse and reloading it and every time it worked fine. Something up with my main PC by the looks of things.
Hmm, plugging my phone into one of the USB 2 ports instead of a USB 3 port seems to have fixed the issue *fingers crossed*
Hi guys, I'm just new here. I have a problem with my Zenfone 2
I'm trying to backup the files of my data manually to my PC but after like a minute of transferring files, it auto-cancels. Is this a problem with the Zenfone 2 or the PC?
Debugging mode is turned on and I even tried using Share Link but it still auto-cancels when it copies some files. I need to backup because I plan on installing CM 12.1
Make sure it never gets moved while copying, maybe also try another cable or USB port.
check your cable or the connector, it seem to be the intermittent connection you are having.
nothing about the software.
mine happen to cancel too, when i use one of the usb port of my pc.

Thanks for the info but when I reversed the process (pc to my phone) it works perfectly fine. But yeah, I just went on to transfer my files to the external SD card instead

I've made sure that I dont move the phone or even touch it while the process is on-going but still the same results
I'll try using another USB cable when I get my hands on a new one.
I had this problem with Moto E. Some files simply doesnt copy (i dont know why). I solve that with a simple solution: SD card!
Copy to sdcard, then put in a card reader, copy to pc. profit.

This or use one of the WiFi file transfer apps like aridroid. I've been using WiFi File Explorer Pro for years now and it is incredibly useful.
