32 bit windows 7 home, not recognizing epic on a consistent basis - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ive had the epic since the day it was released and have had an impossible time getting my computer to recognize it on a consistent basis. i have no idea whats going on. when i first got it i downloaded the samsung drivers and installed them, hooked up my phone and nothing. the computer tried to install drivers but consistently failed. the next day i tried again, did absolutely nothing, and it recognized my phone and i was able to root and everything else. since then its been hit or miss, one day it will recognize it and then it wont for a week, even without doing a god damn thing.
recently i dropped my epic in the snow and it fried the radio, i brought it to sprint and told them the radio just quit working and they gave me a new one. now im having the same problem, i cant get my comp to recognize the phone. i installed the samsung 32 bit drivers and everything, but still nothing. i hook up my phone and it either tries to install more drivers or does nothing at all. I want to root my phone and throw some roms on here, but i cant seem to figure it out. my buddy has a captivate and said he read a post in those forums of some guy having the same problem and a solution but i cant find it. im told its a windows 7 32 bit malfunction of some kind.
sorry for no capitalization/ punctuation and poor grammar but im in a hurry to get to school and i wanted to get this posted before i left.
please help, this is pissing me off.
thanks,
Phillip Traum

Have you tried completely removing the drivers and reloading them?

+1 uninstall/reinstall drivers. Make sure phone is not connected when installing drivers.
Also make sure you have the usb cable unplugged from the pc until you are ready to do something. I found that if you leave the cable plugged into the PC at all times (and unplug/replug at the phone end) it makes it more likely to not detect. Leaving the phone end plugged in and plugging/unplugging the PC end made a world of difference for me.

Reinstall windows. It's almost funny how often that corrects weird driver issues.

Try using the usb cable and phone on another computer and see if it does the same thing. Also try using different usb ports, alot of times the front usb ports are underpowered and will give you issues when you try and mount the phone.

Sounds to me like the cable. IMO the only thing the stock cable is good for is charging on my nightstand. I bought a $2 cable off of eBay that works EVERY time.

I had the same exact problem as you! Just have you tried connecting your phone to one of the USB ports on the back of your computer?

Use the USB ports on the motherboard on the back. Create a new profile for connecting the epic and load the drivers in that Profile. If it fails to recognize, try another port. Make sure you are installing the drivers on the new profile you created through User Accounts and then plugging your phone in. This should fix your problem.

i had the same issue with home premium (also win7) i had to reinstall the drivers before everytime i plugged my phone in.
however, since i put a new rom on it (bonsai 2.0) i havent had this issue.

i have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers numerous times. i rarely ever have the cable plugged in when im not trying to use it to connect to the phone. and my computer only has 2 usb ports on the side of my laptop, so i dont really have many options as far as that is concerned. not sure what else i can do.

Reinstall windows. It is incredibly easy.

+1 for the reinstalling of windows - obnoxious as it may seem. I have a dinky old laptop that I installed Vista on just to do work on my Epic. I can use any cable (stock or my Monoprice.com special) and any port on it to connect to my epic. My Win7 desktop, however, won't to this day recognize it.
Some people have reported success using the drivers that come with PDA.net , too.

Many people are scared of reinstalling windows. They think they'll mess something up. Just backup everything you don't want to lose and you'll be fine. Windows installs, and especially Windows 7 installs are incredibly easy. They basically install themselves. At work, when computers come back in from our stores with problems, I usually delete the junk, copy the hard drive, and reinstall windows. Unless hardware is dying, it damn near always fixes the problem and takes a whole lot less time than trying to troubleshoot some of windows' weird conflicts.
Also, reinstalling windows on a semi-regular basis will get you to build good habits about backing up and organizing your files.

Phone does not recognize it is connected to computer through USB

Good day fine sirs and ma'ams.
I would just like to say I love my Tilt 2, and have had it for a few months now with no real problems and this is about my 4th WM phone.
As of about a month ago, I have been unable to connect or sync the device to my PC.
I have WM Device center 6.1 (the latest from the website)
I am running windows 7
I had been able to sync the phone until about a month ago.
I have unchecked the box in the USB to PC for faster data synchronization.
Essentially, when I plug the phone into the computer, it just acts as if it is connected to a charger. Nothing comes up on the phone and nothing comes up on the computer. It just charges. I have even installed and uninstalled WMDC a couple of times.
I really am at my wits end here.
My question is, is there a fix for this apart from sending the phone in? I am able to flash the phone via the microsd card, and even tried going back to the e2 rom that is as close to the ATT rom as I could find.
I did find the stock rom, but it does not come with the image file, just the ruu.exe I believe. I cannot flash roms via the USB cable either, so I am only able to change things like I said, via the microsd card.
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
And yes, I have searched, and have found many other people posting in other threads saying they have the same problem, and everyone just says to uncheck that one box, which I have done, so that is NOT the problem.
Also, I would just like to add that when I go into the windows directory and attempt to run activesync (repllog.exe) I get the following message.
(cannot communicate with the pc because of the fllowing remote networking error (Error 608)
I have seen others ask help for this question without an answer on xda-dev also.
Thanks again! If anyone has the solution here I think a lot of people will be very happy!
:-(
turn off your firewall then pug ur device in and see if that works... works for me... perhaps your firewall started blocking it for some reason... other than that good luck
I had similar things happen to me in the past. While the phone is connected, check Windows Update whether there is a new version of Sync Center. This has fixed the problem for me.
i appreciate the suggestions.
However,
I have the firewall disabled and it still does not connect.
I uninstalled and reinstalled the WMDC using the latest software directly from the website. There appears to be no updates for the program once it is installed.
Any other suggestions?
Have you tried multiple USB cables, multiple USB ports, or even multiple computers? I've had USB cables which aren't capable of data transfer, as well as USB ports on the computer go bad. You might also considering a hard reset, to ensure no software on the phone could be causing the problem. If it's truly the USB port on the device that's broken, then you're in bad shape if you want to return it to AT&T for repair. You may be able to flash the AT&T stock ROM, but you won't be able to restore the AT&T stock SPL, which they check when fixing the device, so you may very well have to fork over some money to get it fixed. Best of luck
My phone is doing this also.
Multiple PC's, multiple USB ports, multiple cables. All of which worked perfectly beforehand...
The other thing to try is Internet Sharing - when I go in there and press 'connect', then it says Check USB cable connection, connect USB to any of my PC's/laptops and it doesn't register on the phone.
This phone is really a piece of ****. I could rant on for hours about the stupid problems there are with this handset, I'm sure I'm not alone. Perhaps I expected too much.
Anyway, if anyone has any info on how to make my USB connection work I'd love them forever...!

Could be a faulty device...my phone connects to every computer, every time. take the phone to your provider and show them whats happening.
Also, i've had issues with the standard mini USB ( http://www.meditronik.com.pl/doc/mini/usb-kabel-mini=foto=canon.jpg ) not properly connecting/loosing connection.
Try a HTC usb it might work better: http://bestcellbuy.com/bargainsea/Pictures/HTC/OEM_Home_Charger_USB_Cable/OEM_HTC_Data_Cable_07.jpg
I've tried the HTC USB lead that shipped with my phone to no avail.
I think the device is faulty (surprise surprise). It charges from USB perfectly fine, every time.
I'll post back once I find out what Telstra say... it's obviously still under warranty but that isn't really the issue - It is just such a major PITA having to switch to a loan phone and deleting confidential business data etc from my phone before sending away for repair etc etc...
Thanks for the help though, it is appreciated.
Well, I've got my USB going again. Not sure exactly what I've done, but basically I pulled the battery out for a few minutes and replaced it, turned on and off the 'high speed' checkbox in USB Connection Settings, and it has come good.
****box phone.
Somehow mine started working again last night too. Same cable, same port and everything.
Really odd, but I'm not complaining at the moment!
It seems this problem is spreading, as i'm being terrorized by this stupid bug... This afternoon I've tried to get internet on my laptop (by connecting my phone to it), but it was just charging my phone, so I thought the cable was broken. Next I tried it at home on my desktop computer, with another cable, and it did the same (several reboots have passed).
I don't know if someone already tried it, but when you enter the bootloader, it says "Serial". Normally when you connect the USB-cable it changes to "USB" (at least with my kaiser, universal and wizard). on my phone it didn't...... can anyone check this for me??
to enter bootloader: hold volume-down-button and pres soft-reset-button.
thanks in advance!

thanks for your help.
I've flashed my device with the newest official from HTC, and it still doesn't connect with the usb-data (i used the "flash-from-SD" -method).
The strange thing was that it happened suddenly... i never use a headset with cable, so its almost impossible the connector is broken. Any ideas people??
btw, the device isn't SPL flashed, so i can't use other roms beside the official roms...
Same thing happened to me. No USB sync, no USB connection at all; it only charges. Thankfully I had a chance to flash to a custom ROM before this happened.
The only way I can sync my data is to use a bluetooth USB in my PC. Works quite well with my contacts, calendar, & email, but I have yet to try to transfer any large files.
The bluetooth USB I went with was ASUS USB-BT21 USB 2.0 Mini Bluetooth Dongle. It is VERY low profile, too, but I would have liked for it to come with an end cap like those USB flash drives, otherwise I have yet to find any complaints about it. The price was great and so much cheaper than spending an additional $70-$100 to get my USB port on my device fixed.
Here's my saga: No Syncing, No USB Connection
Best of luck!
Debbie
this happened to me before...when you connect your devivce to your laptop/comp, are you guys not getting the little pop up that says activesync & disc drive...??? if so jus make sure at least one of those are checked...sometimes both of the circles will be blank, thus the comp will simply charge it...
unplug the device for approx 10 sec then plug it in again, and the box should pop up again...
also...if you are tethered to your comp using the tp2's internet, your comp will not recognize your tp2's storage...

I did not know one could flash to new ROM by use of the SD card?
Mine is de-HSPL, so now I can not select another ROM anymore. (Got the 6.1 default one again)

I've never used the SD-Card method myself, but now will have to due to my USB port no longer working.
I've been syncing by using Bluetooth USB and just tried transferring files via Bluetooth and it worked like a charm! Smaller files were instantaneous and large files took longer (of course), but also worked fine.
I just tried copying over a RHODIMG.nbh file and that bugger worked (188MB)... Excellent!!!
I did buy a USB card reader to transfer files, just to be on the safe side, but I must say that this little Bluetooth USB that I picked up is working awesome.

i exactly have the same problem.I guess i need to send it back

[Q] Cannot install Windows 7 64 bit Drivers

I've tried everything I can possibly think of. I have an Asus Laptop with Windows 7 64 bit and absolutely cannot get my Epic to be recognized. I've uninstalled and re-installed the driver more times than I care to mention. I've tried mounting the device to no avail either. I've tried plugging in the phone into each of the USB ports on the laptop to no avail. I need to get the computer to recognize the device so I can get odin to recognize the phone so I can flash back to stock. Right now it doesn't do so. Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do to get this up an running?
Try installing the 32-bit drivers even if you're on a 64-bit computer....
The same issue comes up. It says that the drivers are not successfully installed (even though the installer goes through) and it says "Unknown Device" over and over.
Are you removing previous drivers?
then rebooting before installing new drivers...
also are you using stock cable?
if so buy a new cable you can get cheap ones online for like a dollar just search micro usb cables
Yes, yes, yes. Does the cable really make that much of a difference? I saw that people have had issues but I mean it charges properly all the time so I figured it was ok to use.
Absolutely!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
That cable is worthless get a Blackberry cable they are very durable and dependable.
i was having problems also..... all because of the cable.
I'll probably go buy a cable from Walmart, order a cheaper one online from Monoprice and return the other just so I can odin my phone...I really hope that's the issue though.

does it keep looping "unknown device" in the corner, almost like you unplugging and plugging back in repeatedly?
ifso try cleaning the contacts of the usb port on phone and on the small end of the cable.
if not then try totally uninstalling the drivers you installed and if possible when its saying "unknown device" open the device manager, r-click then unistall in there.
USBDview has always been able to dig me out of the home when ive had usb related driver issues... just run it and delete/uninstall anything samsung/android/adb etc related, reboot pc and phone then try again...maybe even redownload the drivers

update (you replied as i was typing): one bandaid for the cable you could try for now is to take a needlenose pliers or something and slightly squish the micro end to try getting a tighter fit.... i had to do that to the cable i keep at work.
You can always just download kies. That's what I did. When I was trying the standalone drivers I had trouble. Installed kies on both of my laptops and coding works beautifully everytime. And I seriously think you guys are ill. Its a cable... its digital. It either works or.it doesn't. I use my samsung wire exclusively. Its thin and I like contour on the plug. Both cables have worked flawlessly on both of my epics.

You are wrong.
Cables can have breaks in them which give them intermittent connectivity. Also, since this cable has several (5 I think?) single strands of wire in them, a single wire could be screwed up causing this (or the pin for a single wire on either end) That would still allow it to charge, and partially be recognized by Windows, but not allow it to fully communicate causing this problem.
I have a cable that I only use for charging because it has this EXACT problem. Another cable works perfect, but this particular cable gives me the unknown device.

Right.. so it either works or it doesn't lol if both cables are in perfect working condition then there would be no issue. Its all preference. I personally use a blackberry micro usb cable. It locks in to the usb port on the phone better. Just so im not paranoid about the wire coming off while flashing... cuz thats bad lol

I didn't articulate myself clearly, but that is my fault.
If a single wire inside the cable is broken (for the sake of simplicity let's just say it is the RECEIVE cable - from the device to the PC). The PC can recognize that there is a device there, but because the device can't talk to the PC, Windows can tell there is something there, but has no idea what it is since the device can't talk back to the PC. Also, in this scenario the cable would charge just fine since those individual lines are intact.

To quote u "Yes yes yes" it does make ALL THE DIFFERENCE... I had the same problem and made serveral posts about it when the phone 1st came out, I tried everything... Uninstalled/Reinstalled/Rebooted many times, Manually deleted the folders where the drivers are held then Re-installed, Installed Kies (which is a P.O.S. and was a BIG WASTE OF TIME imo.) I tried everything and just about gave up until 1 day i looked @ my roomate and asked him 2 let me borrow his cable to his cheap cricket phone 2 see if it would make a difference.
Well it worked... Get a new cable, if you've done what ive done and it still doesnt work, its the cable and not the drivers
I've done just about all I freaking can on this as well.
I've installed, un-installed, and re-installed the drivers. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit on Bootcamp.
I've used USBDView, I've uninstalled all of the connected drivers. They get re-installed, but the phone keeps keeps coming up as an Unknown Device. I try and locate the Samsung USB drivers directory, but it keeps coming up as Unknown.
Does anyone know specifically what directory I should use choose when trying to manually link the driver in Device Manager? I'm having a ***** of a time here.
Anybody have any ideas for me? Thanks.
I had the same problem. Buy a new cable from monoprice. The second I bought a new cable for my 64 bit Asus laptop it worked.
Trust me, buy a new cable.

I had the same problem. I didn't follow directions to solve my problem in Odin. I had to start Odin and plug my phone in and quickly put the phone into download mode. I did that a few times and finally got it to recognize. With Syndicate, it now recognizes every time. I say that now. LOL
This is how I fixed this problem. After doing all I could think of, uninstall, install, system restore, nandroid restor to when phone was being recognized... all these didn't work for me. I still got the same unknown device in device manager.
The fix: with samsung epic drivers already installed. Turn the phone on, plug into your computer. Let device manager find unknown device. Power off the phone. Boot into recovery. Pc will recognize your phone as samsung android device. Reboot your phone and you should be good to go. Hope this works for the rest of you. Good luck.

Isn't the original issue that the driver install fails? not that the device isnt being readed?

[Q] Connecting to PC help!

OK I have searched extensively for the last 3 days and have come up fruitless with a working solution. While I have found countless threads (even on here) none of the solutions offered seemed to work for me. So please no flaming When I plug my OG Evo into a USB cable to a computer all that happens is it starts charging. the phone never asks what I want to do. the PC never sees it and the phone does not recognized that it's plugged in. Here are some of the things I have done so you guys don't tell me to search again.
Please note this is an unrooted 2.3 Evo
Rebooted, pulled batteries.
Wiped completely. This includes cache.
Turned "ask me" on and off in the settings
Changed USB cables (6 different ones)
changed PC's (5 Different ones, with 3 different OS's)
Updated just about everything (Including my girlfriend, LOL)
Force stopped PC sync and rebooted.
I am not running any PC sync programs at all.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

has it ever worked properly? maybe its a problem with the drivers?
Well that is difficult to answer. it has never worked with this phone but other phones have worked in the past (My 6th replacement from Sprint), but no phone has been connected to my new win 7 laptop or the other PC's I tried it on. I wish I had my old PC to test connectivity but I do not. The Phone charges on every PC I Plug it into, and I tried it with multiple cables just in case it was my cable that went bad.
well i would try to update the drivers. or delete them if that doesnt work and re-install. what OS are you using on your pc? does it say 'the usb device is not recognized'? oh you also want to make sure that you have the adb drivers installed. thats probably the problem.
OK the PC never sees the phone. I do not even get "Device not recognized". Nothing happens at all except that the phone just starts charging. I think it may be a hardware issue I am having. I just hate the prospect of having to bring my phone back to Sprint.
I was having the exact same problem which was keeping me from rooting. I finally got my computer to recognize my evo by connecting it via usb and entering boot menu. I began selecting hboot and fastboot and my computer "saw" my evo. No problems since that point and now I'm rooted and stoked
Thanks for the Tip, I just tried it. Nothing still cant see my phone. Even HBoot USB didn't work. Thanks for the tip though. It's appreciated!
do you have usb debugging turned on?

I had a similar problem. If multiple cables do not work, I had to Odin back to stock and bam everything was fine again. This will only work if Odin can see it, which mine did but would not when the phone booted up. Hope this helps.

I had this happen to me with srf 1.2 and its doing it again now, I can't use stock cable for anything other than charging. When I connect to a computer it says the same "unrecognized device" but when I use a thicker blackberry cable everything works fine.

It's the Cable.
I have issues getting my Epic recognized as well, but don't fret.
The stock cable will still work, you just have to give it more chances to recognize.
When you install drivers, they don't always go through on every usb port your laptop/desktop have. some ports will work better, like on-board powered ports.
I assume you know your computer better than anyone else and already know which usb ports never fail you and which ones are a little iffy.
Factors aside, wether you be on xp, vista, or windows seven, or even Windows 8 beta... LOL. Open up device manager.. if your 'unknown device' (your epic) is connected, leave it that way, and go down to the usb ports section of device manager. click down on the arrows and you'll find 'unknown device' that's your epic. Right click, uninstall.
now, do the following.
If you're trying to flash/odin.. make sure your SD card is out. as you want your phone to be recognized for a modem, not a usb massive storage, but if in fact what you're going for is the ability to browse through your phone's sd card with your phone connected, then obviously leave the sd card in.Disconnect the usb cable from your pc's end. Make sure your plug is completely inside your phone's micro-usb port. Now, either try the same port again, or choose a different one, do realize that your computer will have to 'recognize' your phone and install the drivers installed on your computer for each new port you try it on. You'll eventually realize which port works best and get full recognition, just give it a little time and patience and you won't be dissapointed. Old Windows XP takes a little longer for usb recognition than windows vista or snappy windows seven. Cheers and i hope i was of any help to you or anyone else browsing around. =]

Specific Usb connection problem for my S3

I read a bunch posts on UBS issues but not that solved my problem.
Ok this seemed to start after I installed the ABLDroot tool by chainfire.... but sense then I have tried other roms, and other phones ATM I got a S3 and my S3 hooked into my computer... I going do my best make this easy for you and explain it right.
I have 2 usb ports on my computer which sucks (only having 2) its a labtop. Anyway I have 2 USB DLINK hubs.... one goes into computer and the other goes into the usb hub.. hub1----hub2----computer
hub 1 has nothing in it.....
hun 2 has my S3, S2 and the other hub pluged into it
my computer has 1 usb hub pluged into it and other port is used for my mouse (via a small hub) I do that because its usb mouse and it won't register right on the hubs.... anywaus
Easy problem could this be usb hub? Doesn't seem to be but I can't say I can tell for sure because I need stupid thing to use the phone unless I just except not being able use anything else USB (which arn't connected right now at wern't when the problem started)
This started when installed that ABD tool. Then my computer started saying wrong device error. So I went ahead and installed older drivers which fixed that problem. But the main problem is sometimes when I move stuff on my S3 like if I copy files and stuff I can see they moved on the phone but when I go to the computer and try to find my files there not there. Not moved. Or I see blank folders. Or worse even though I can use file commander still I am unable to see my phones on Cdrive. I see them in devices but not C drive.
sometimes problem goes away sometimes not. what is this ? the older drivers? the abd tool? I can't tell I tried to take one away at a time and while problem would go away often times it still happens once in awhile.... im going try some more tests with the usb plugged strait in but the problem stilll happens ..
Though its better if I don't use the hub thats not good enough for me I want problem gone
I use windows 7 any ideas thanks
only thing I dunno is could having a S2 conected mess with drivers maybe? doesn't seem so.
Any ideas? Different drivers or ... a program or... i dunno man shezzzz
Having the S2 connected shouldn't change anything. Your laptop should see both.
My guess is your USB hub but could also be from the older drivers.
This is a problem specific to your pc (either hardware or software), it's really hard to know exactly what's wrong without being there to test it.
