will htc desire officially get android 2.3? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

my question is will htc desire get android 2.3 officially? if 'no' then why so? if 'yes' then how much time do we have to wait? thanx in advance

Dont know
some people say froyo would be the last update for the htc desire and some say just sit back and wait for gingerbread to come to htc desire.

step 1. read the first page of this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=730416
step 2. get excited
step 3. read the last couple of pages
step 4. comedown!

If you are that excited about getting 2.3 someday why not go the custom ROM root and get it now!? I guess most people are worried about voiding the warranty or bricking, but it seems you would have to be pretty unlucky to brick your phone.
I'm running Android 2.3.2 via the Oxygen 2.0 RC7 ROM... loving it.

Maybe some people don't want custom ROMs...

it would be a shock to the non rooted android users if u let them know they could change anything in there phone. Most non rooted android users probably think rooting your phone is the androids equivalent of jailbreaking. which u and me both know its alot more then that. iphone users wish they could overclock there devices. i know i wish i could have when i had my iphone 4 running ff7

When the next version of Android is released....

Assuming we have root access by then (I really hope we do) will you be waiting for HTC to release the Sense version of it or are you going to upgrade to stock Android in the meantime?

after having experienced android being, modded by htc and then buggered by orange, i'm hoping we can root the desire as i'd like to go straight to a pure android o/s

Don't hold your breath Read this:

If this is true ... FroYo (the next Android OS build iteration) will be next month together with Flash 10.1.
Then we can pray every night to have root access + write permission to the system partition !
I really hope we do have root access. Not having proper flash is really bugging me.
Either we get root or HTC Have a sense version very quick after the FroYo release.
Doesn't the HTC Evo 4g have froyo? Would be ported over.

The 2.1 update for the Hero still hasn't been released despite 2.1 having been released a good while ago.
But then again, the EVO 4G and the Desire have the exact same level of processing power so I don't see why HTC would delay the update in any way.
Let's hope HTC don't let us down.
whats the problem with the Flash thats on the desire? I have not had any non-loading flash sites at all yet

It gets bogged down by heavy sites. I want flash to work just aswell as it does on my desktop.
New flash version will most probably have hardware acceleration, and all the functions flash 10.1 has on the desktop.
And -hopefully- it will be a fully optimized version of Flash. So it's actually doable on a mobile device. But I guess that is the only way for it to be succesful.
And just to be prepared, I'm programming all my new flash applications to be able to run on mobile devices (min resolution of 800x480). I'm going openscreen project, multiplatform, multi os, multi mobile devices!
If the rumors about the change in how the OS will update then I cannot see too much trouble sorting out Sense for it as it will only be compatibility checks with the core components and allow for any new core features.
Plus going by @gogol's post there will be a lot of pressure on HTC to release Sense quick smart for it with full Flash support. For all we know HTC may already be working on it just because we don't know whats coming with Froyo doesn't mean the companies haven't got a pre-release ROM

They more than likely do as they are releasing the EVO 4G with FroYo in about 2-3 weeks.
I'm guessing that Android 2.2 will be released within the next 2 - 2 1/2 weeks and that HTC will either release the Sense version of 2.2 at the same time or at the very very latest at the same time as the EVO.
Forgive my ignorance but will htc upgrade the android os on the desire to froyo when it is released or are we stuck with eclair unless we root the device?

Before going to Official Froyo, think about this...

Yes, I understand the Official Froyo maybe more stable since it's more updated and complete than the leaked Froyo in custom ROM. But really is it worth the upgrade?? What I mean, when you upgrade to official froyo you will loose your root, and possibly a new updated radio that would maybe need "Paul" time to hack again. Without the root, it may not be possible to change to different ROM. I am pretty sure, once those official FROYO is out...there would be lots of different custom ROM MOD based on Official FROYO available?? Also looking at my past experience with HTC, once this official 2.2 update is available, they wont update very often anymore. It maybe better to stay with custom ROM since those cooks tend to get newer system kernel somewhere. I guess for me, even if the update is out, I will just wait out till someone make new custom ROM based on this official FROYO? cheer...that's just my opinion.
^^^what he said^^^^ +1
Most, if not all people will be waiting for a rooted version. I'll be amazed if people unroot just to get it, when it'll be modded in no time. The test release by udk is a prime example.

Gingerbread
Agree with the original poster's sentiments. Also worth considering that this could very easily be the last major update for HTC to roll out to the Desire. There's already a newer generation of devices out and HTC have no incentive to keep us at the leading edge. I got a clear taste of this with my previous HTC Magic - dropped by Vodafone like an unwanted toy once they started selling newer devices. Thankfully it was completely unlocked and I could flash all the custom ROMs on that which I liked but since it was a 32B if I had gone official and somehow ended up there I'd have been left behind at 1.6.
I "upgraded" from Hero (which I liked pretty much) to Desire about a month ago, and it's still unrooted. I rooted and installed a custom ROM to my Hero (a couple of weeks before the official 2.1 came out) and I was far from impressed. It became slow and laggy, the available RAM was way below than on the original 1.5 etc. I assume that I should've try other ROMs as well but at a certain point I just got tired so I switched to Desire. I love the way it is. It's fast, responsive and I enjoy all the possibilities of the hardware. I can even impress my iPhone friends with a little smile on my face.
The guy I sold my Hero just updated to the official OTA 2.1 a couple of days ago. Guess what? It's flying! I wouldn't believe it if I couldn't see with my own eyes.
I love what you guys do here. I really do. I'm amazed and impressed with all the work and effort you put in these custom ROMs. I'm reading all the interesting threads, tips, tricks etc. It's good to have a place like this board. It's good to have full control over our handsets, install software others can't. But I kinda like the way HTC puts together and tests its ROMs even if it's bloated with stuff I'll never use. I'll check for updates every hour this weekend Cos I'm eager to try all the new features. Maybe later I'll switch to a custom ROM which is based on the official, but for now I'm focusing on the "Check now" button
even though it hurts to say so.. but I agree

Why would it not possible to root back after unrooting? Since rooting is now riskfree...
What I would like is a standard final realease, rooted and A2SD+'ed, thats it, no other mod`s.
as long as froyo doesn't modify the hboot to a new version, you can always rollback and unroot.

Because the leaked froyo came with a new HBOOT (which was removed by devs here) which at the moment is unrootable. And may be unrootable forever!

Agreed, I finally took the plunge to root and A2SD, the latter of which is amazing Is it really too much to ask for, just to install apps on the SD?
I will wait for Froyo Official-based custom ROMS!

So if someone buy a HTC desire after the update he may not be able to get root ever. Lucky us!

I highly doubt no one is ever going to be able to root if they officially upgrade to 2.2. It will happen, it might just take a while that's all for Paul and co. to do it..
I think that all of you that says that the new Hboot could not be hacked, underestimate many very very skilled peoples knowledge. Just because it isn't cracked now, it not equal to *incrackable*.
I am very certain that it will be cracked or something else and then root access can be achieved again.

[Q] Can I upgrade my rooted Desire to Gingerbread 2.3?

The title basically says it all.
I'm wondering if I can upgrade my HTC desire to gingerbread 2.3, but still be able to add custom ROMs and all the other freedom you get with a rooted phone.
Thanks
You can flash a gingerbread custom rom, yes. Just look in the desire development forum.
No, what I mean is the new HTC Desire Android 2.3 Upgrade was released couple months ago.
I'm currently on Android 2.2 Froyo, but I'm wanting to update to gingerbread 2.3, but at the same time I want to be able to install custom ROMS.
Flashing an official release will unroot your phone and replace your recovery. There are many custom roms based on this release that if you flash will not unroot your phone or replace your recovery like the RUU said.
So like I said in my last post..
You can flash a gingerbread custom rom, yes. Just look in the desire development forum.
All this information is a basic requirement to being rooted. I am surprised you don't know this.
Ah, I see. Thank you

n if i root my phone will my warranty be cancelled??
You can refer to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1029318
Here you can get solutions for all your queries
and yes if you root your wildfire the warranty will be voided.
Press Thanks if i helped u...
i have tried the unrevoked method to root my phone..it was all going good but in the end it says
"error- is your firmware too new"
plz help
Follow the AlphaRev X / Revolutionary part of that post. Unrevoked does not work on 2.2.1
I have made a complete guide to downgrading the HBOOT, rooting and flashing the HTC Wildfire for noobs (It isn't for devs, it is explained in high detail). All the files are also packaged, so you don't have to visit many links. The only downside to that is that the file size is pretty big, and you will need 7zip or WinRAR to extract the folder.
For your second question, I recommend Cyanogenmod 7.0.1.0 Stable as it doesn't have many bugs and is based on Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread.
Yes, your warranty will probably be cancelled, but there is a high chance it will only affect your software warranty, not hardware. (e.g If your power button stops working, they can fix it)
im using Leaf r3, it is worth upgrading to CM7? thanks.

Stuff like this cannot be answered by a definitive Yes or No. You have to give it a go once and decide for yourself whether it is better or not. Example - I find Cyanogenmod much better than the stock 2.2.1 ROM, but there are many others who do not like the look / some features (Like no smart dialer / flash lite / looks etc) of Cyanogenmod, and hence stick with HTC Sense based ROMs.

[Q] Noob Help....

Hi.
I recently got my Desire HD (changed from Sony Ericsson X10) and am using it legitimately at the moment.
I just have a few questions about rooting that i wasn't able to find elsewhere etc.
1. If i root my phone, and HTC release the ICS update, am i still able to do this?
2. What is the easiest/safest way to root my phone? (2.3.5, Sense 3.0)
3. Is it worth me rooting my phone? (i rooted my SE X10 but that was to over clock it and make it faster but i'm more than happy with the speed of my DHD).
Thank you.

1. If you keep the stock ROM, you are able to upgrade (I think).
2. Search for guides. There are many out there. SuperOneClick may be the easiest one.
3. Yes, you can do so much more than just overclock!
You can always root and flash a custom rom. Problem is when ICS rolls out from your carrier and you revert to stock ROM your phone could potentially revert to be locked to your carrier.

I purchased my DHD in Feb 2011, and kept it stock for a few weeks because I was new to Android and Smart Phones. After getting used to it I Rooted and S-Off which is really simple with the DHD and tried a few roms.
I was forever running Quadrant to see if my score would improve but there was no real point the speed was really very good with only occasionally noticeable lag on when lots of pages were open.
I was on CM7 for the last 6 months or so and found that it recently felt a little laggy and sticky and I have only yesterday made the jump to Ice Cream Sandwhich for the DHD. If you are looking to root be sure to give this rom a try it's really something else forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1460820# it's breathed new life into my DHD.
You will find you get a bit better battery life out of a non stock setup too.

Stay rooted and never use stock roms, custom roms like arhd would have ICS official well before it is released ota to you.
