Hi guys
Has anyone noticed that there is checkerboard rendering still happening on the latest custom roms. Some cooks note that its gone but I still see it. i.e the latest midnight rom based on bonsai has it but the quantum rom doesn't. I guess what Im curious about is what causes the rendering and how was it fixed? Any apk out there that can be installed to correct it? Note the cooks are great and im in no way dissing there work and dedication.

Any ideas?

Wish I had an answer for you, I just found this thread because I did a search before asking the same question. I have the checkerboarding with Midnight 3.0, but I did not have it running Midnight 2.3 or Supernova.
this may just be a dumb theory, but it appears the checkerboarding is intentional, from the original app... its just the 'im still loading' screen. So If one rom performs faster, then you wont even see it, because it just loads the page... Devs??? I always wondered this, as at first people saw it as a glitch, but I think the problem is slow page loads, not what it displays instead of the page while loading. I could be totally wrong, but ive seen it on all Froyo roms (DK28 roms, only tried one of the others for a few hours, but it did it too..). I just saw a lot of people complaining about the 'glitch', just like all the 'lags', and Im not so sure these are glitches, as much as performance kinks needing to be ironed out, which no doubt would be easier with source code... please correct if I am mistaken, im very curious about this too, but if its 'normal', its just a way to tell how fast a rom is, given youre using say the same ultra high speed wifi I do... I know its not my internet, ive got 35/35 Fios....
glad I'm not the only one. Midnights rom seems pretty smooth other then the checkerboard on the browser. Seems to me someone has it fixed right and not all the cooks are following it.

Ok Im all backed up and ready to give it a go. I just have a few questions.
I don't use the Sense Launcher and have almost nothing on my home screens. just the scrolling dock at the bottom. launcher pro.
What are some things I am going to lose?
What is the differences in the Camera? Details?
What are the differences in the Dialer?
I like the dialer on Fresh 3.2 because of the FB integration.
I don't use 4G
I have not used HDMI as my flatscreen has a CPU connected already.
Is it possible to have the gallery from 3.2 with the FB pictures tab? or is that a sense thing?
Basically I don't know what all is strictly sense.
the default aosp dialer has what i consider to be a fault. you can't just spell out the name of contact. so i started using DialerOne.
dont' forget to check out both CM6 related threads (both are a bit quiet, but will answer many of the questions you may cross...search is your friend)

not sure on the FB stuff since I don't use it except to fill in the pics in my contact list.
give it a whirl. it will be a bit different.
enjoy.
Thanks Draginmagik (sportbike rider?) I had already thought out what I wanted to ask while at work and only had time to ask while on lunch. Figured Id get some input from some people who had used both but your input is appreciated to. I forgot about dialer one. That is one of my favorite things about the dialer I have. I tried Dialer One on The moment but couldn't get it to come up with the green button. I guess thats not a problem with the evo.
A few things ive noticed in Fresh 3.2 Vs Cyanogen mod is that...
Fresh's battery life (by itself, no kernal flashed) is by far the best of any of the ROMS ive used.
I like the sense camera sooooooo much more than the default android camera so thats a no brainer for me.
I do like the AOSP call history though, its much easier to navigate to and through.
Overall, im running Cyanogen right now but ill probably go back to Fresh later tonight... the battery difference is amazing.
Reading a little more I don't see where Sprint vvm / weird text message is there or not. I hated that on the Hero AOSP roms. Also want to get opinions on GPS as i need it to work at the end of this week. I will be flashing this tonight, just want to get some feedback so dont need the "just try it" post. Again, Im just trying to get a comparison so I know what to look for faster after I flash to be sure I like it before I head home this weekend. Once I get on the road and get back home, phone playtime is over until I get caught up at home . hahaha.

Have you tried Kings ASOP kernrel? Im using #3 BFS and its great if I dont use the phone but it seems to suck down pretty quick when the phone wakes up. I'm over the battery thing, I just started carrying my usb cable in my back pocket and hit up a usb plug when I see one. lol But thanks for the info. Ill keep an eye on that too.

Can you explain the difference? I just figured out on the Fresh camera that if you touch the screen it focuses on that spot. Awesome feature. Wish my real camera did that.

not sure how the stock CM6 kernel is. a few days ago the CM6 nightly was upped to the .34 kernel. the custom ROM's are mostly on the .32 kernel still. i ran Kings on CM and it was 'ok'. the UI was smooth but the battery life reminded me of my previous stock kernels. perhaps as he rolls out more kernels that will be adjusted.
Cyanogen wrote the camera app in CM6. it also has the point touch focus. it has been much improved from the default aosp camera.

All nanded up and flashed and restored most of my apps. Pandora sounds great. Ill test it in the shop but in the hotel its loud! I didn't Know that was a feature.
I liked the look of the dialer until the phone rang. YUK!
Im trying to finish up my Manup them but not sure if the ZIP I already have for the notification bar will work with CM6
The camera work good so far, as long as the pictures take good im OK with that. I hate 3d gallery, always have. its on my list of things to fix.
I downloaded the one in the link. Your on nightlys right? do they seem stable enough for you? whats the best way to try those out? The github link is kinda over my head.

Cant forget having the ability to zoom while recording video. That's one of the big pluses of CM.
Well I found that the stock notification bar zip that I had on file won't work. I got the little blue android of death. After a quick reflash of cm6 all is well. still need that manup theme.
i'm on the 9/15 nightly. i think it was the 'swipe away items from the notification bar' feature or maybe a camera update that got me to flash up from the CM6final.
running it with -snap 7.6bfs kernel
currently, the CM6nightlys have slowed down so you just kinda keep an eye on the thread for nifty new features or updates...other than that, it's been very very stable for me since well before CM6final was released.
Sooo here we go. I'm finally getting desperate after dealing with this issue for sometime now.
Brief story of how I believe this happened:
A while back now I remember when Calkulin was releasing the radio updates and what not, at one time he released a TouchInput update (correct me if I'm wrong) . I remember I downloaded all of em, u know, radio, wimax, NV... so on so fourth... and I flashed the input file. Everything seemed to work great, but then I started having major touch issues. That same day I flashed I read multiple people were having issues with their touchscreen so Calk set out a previous version. I went ahead and flashed the older version and everything went back to normal... well, better than it was when it messed up. So now I'm trying to find someone who has any idea what in the world im talking about, or maybe you've had the same issue.
Still have no idea what I'm talking about? I uploaded a video on YouTube to show what I mean. =/ I should have put more of an example, but you get the idea. And boy does it get irritating especially when playing a game that requires multitouch...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXyJtrs2w9w
Anyone have any solutions? Ideas? Let me know here, or since I dont check back as often as I use to, send me an @ reply on Twitter @EvoROMBlog
I will honestly give some sort of incentive. Maybe I'll buy you an energy drink or something.
**Really wishing to find a fix for this, knowing XDA, Im sure theres someone who can figure something out.
What kind of rom are you running? Are you rooted still? Our evos are capable of 3 point and 5 point multitouch depending on which hardware you have(touch sensors). If you're on a sense rom why don't you search the dev section for NETARCHYS kernel. I believe on aosp roms it supports 5 if your hardware does but I could be wrong. The kernel will enable either 3 point or 5 point multitouch; by default HTC has it set to 3 I believe with stock kernel. Fortunately mine supports 5 point so it makes emulation very pleasant along with a great multitouch experience .
Edit: Here's the forum link to the kernel where net talks about 3 point and 5 point multitouch. There's a command you can run to see if your touch sensors can do 3 or 5.

Some have it by default some don't. I would try the latest 4.3.4 build that also has the HDMI support. I recommend the havs less version because aggressive havs seems to not play nice all the time.

Well different kernel didn't work.. I kinda figured it wasn't going to. I have a feeling its hardware related, but again I have no clue. If I can find some sort of touch input fix, I'm sure an experienced dev would know something. Thanks for trying to help tho.

Bumping my thread.I really need to figure out why my Multi-Touch is so bugged in Sense ROMs on my phone.
Hey guys im curious is there anyone who has been able to fully replace EC05 roms with one of the gingerbread roms availalbe? And in doing so keeping the stability, battery performance, and speed of the EC05 roms? I've personally gone from an amazing experience with ACS SFR 1.2 to Ginger Bamboozled and ERA hurricane rom and personally have not seen any benefits with keeping gingerbread. I notice no battery improvements and the phone has slowed down significantly. The only plus i've seen with gingerbread is the cool CRT off animation. Note i've never run the commands to stop processes that update in the background i.e. DRM and SNS, which from what I read make a fairly big difference with getting better battery life on EH17 roms. So at this point I'm thinking of going back to SFR 1.2 or another EC05 rom. Is there someone out there that can give me some useful tips on how to make the Gingerbread roms run smoother for me or am I just wasting my time? Also I used to get random Reboots on Gingerbread but i've noticed that it has stopped, odd. Oh almost forgot I use my keyboard all the time for writing emails for work and not having the skipped letters fix is so annoying. I want to shoot my phone sometimes.
Have you tried Spare Parts and setting all animations to FAST in it? I am on Bonsai B14 EG22 and my phone is about as fast as it was on EC05 ROMs. I do stop all processes when I first boot and have a few frozen with Titanium.

I don't care if that does anything for the actual speed or not...its a hell of a placebo effect. Another thing is you could oc with tegrak
As of right now, I don't see any advantage of using a Gingerbread Rom. I was in the same boat as you. I tried a few of them but due to the random reboots and keyboard skips, I couldn't take it anymore. I'm now using the Epic Revolution Rom and I love it. I won't be going back to Gingerbread till the official release.

Depends on the apps you have
I'm running the ERA OLYMPUS 1.6 EH06 ROM. I hoard apps and that's really bad for performance of the device and battery. I haven't frozen the SNS/Updates but I freeze the DRM every time I install a ROM anyway. I just managed to get all the apps that like running in the background to not do that by messing with the settings and clearing widgets. I can now last at least 5 hours on battery while actually using the phone. My battery life has been about the same on every ROM I've ever used. I would say to try this ROM with Journaling enabled and running Chris' new EH17 Plus kernel. I am also using the EH17 modem. Everything is working pretty well for me now.
No good reason to keep the leaks. However, if you are converted to ext4 and use the v6 supercharge script its as smooth and responsive as sfr 1.2 at 1.4ghz.

I've been dealing with the same dilemma the past week. I've found that there's really no pros to keeping the gb roms. Although I really like the theme on bamboozle as well as my quadrant stats. Speaking of which, can anyone tell me where I can get the SII lockscreen that comes with bamboozle? It's definitely my preferred lock screen. If anyone can help that'd be awesome thanks!
Thanks for good responses
Thanks guys for all the feedback, I think i'm being swayed more towards the EC05 roms until the release of gingerbread source files. I think the biggest thing now that look at it is the keyboard letter skips. I rely on my phones keyboard far to much to write really fast work emails and no matter how I setup my virtual keyboard or auto correction on TouchPal keyboard or Swype, its just not accurate enough and I waste more time trying to fix the auto corrections. Thanks again everyone and I really hope this thread assist others with making a their choices on which Rom to Choose or which version of Rom to choose. Froyo here I come.... now i gotta figure out if I want to go with Era or ACS lol.
In my opinion, no. After trolling all around using GB Leaks I finally came back to Froyo (Bonsai 4.1.3) because of the stability and speed.
I think its best just to wait for something official when it can be polished and tweaked with.
I too have been up and down the development pages, trying out different roms an modems, froyo and GB. Froyo was cool when i was using it, but I like the way GB looks. I actually had more problems with the Froyo roms than with GB roms, but that could be bc im getting better at rooting.
Right now im running RandomROM 2.3.4 on the EG22 modem with generation x theme. I get a couple of framework fc's throughout the day, but it doesnt seem to actually fc anything. I seem to just get the notification. battery life is amazing. I used to have to charge my phone after only 6 hours, even with light use. Now I dont need a charger until the end of the day, even with moderate to heavy use. I even use it as my wifi at home for xbox and whatnot. Touchpal's hardware prediction is pretty cool, although I havent really noticed much key skipping without it. I'm still new at rooting, so I don't do too much with oc and such.
I get about twice the battery life using RandomROMs hawk v4 vs any of the ec05 builds. Haven't experienced any TV's yet and only one random reboot after running the v6 script.

It was requested so I offered and made a video showing boot up, and general usage in the newly released CM9 RC1. It is running the stock CM9 kernel, not HONOs kernel. It is fresh, 3rd boot after flashing. It is rock stable so far with no issues since flash. If you are considering using it as a daily driver, I would say go for it!
If you have any questions about it, just ask and I will try my best to answer accordingly.
And NOW, the video

What about battery?Better?

Battery
For me, its pretty decent. I dont constantly run 4g and usually have it disabled altogether because Im on wifi pretty much everywhere. I leave wifi on all the time and gps too. When i flashed it yesterday at approximately 2:30 pm local time, It was at 71%. I did not charge it and used it fairly minimally(around 20 mins of gaming, some wifi browsing, a handful of calls, playing with it while shooting the video, and a couple text messages) and i started charging it at 11am today with 35% left. Is it better than gingerbread? definitely. I havent tried HONOs new v4 kernel though. Of course YMMV.
oh, and btw for those wondering, I havent had any issues at all since flashing. No crashes, no force closes, and everything is smooth and buttery.
Also, if there is anyone who would like to see something specific on video, I could do another if necessary. I tried to get the basic out of the box experience into that one.
I've been using it since it came out on the 26th as well. Maybe it's a placebo effect... But it seems so much smoother and with no force closes.... But... That could also be because I did a full wipe when I installed... And I haven't done that since installing the first nightly... Bottom line... I loving it. No issues so far. Also thanks for the video.

And I agree with your sentiments exactly. No issues for me and extremely smooth. I see no reason yet why this shouldn't be daily driver ready.

Oh and an update on battery. I know that this is only a short term test but in the last 2.5 hours since i unplugged, i have made 1 phone call, had wifi on the whole time, and done a few texts. Im still at 100 percent. I used to be at 95 or less by now...

Similar to the other thread where you post the bugs in the ICS leak, are there any in the stock ROM that was just posted today? I'm very interested, but I don't wanna go too far if it's riddled with issues.
I have gathered that the keyboard isn't backlit, but is there anything else that isn't functioning properly?
I think the CWMR ROM posted is just a repack of the same ROM, so any bugs present in the original leaked ROM would be present. Cant speak for everyone but other than the keyboard backlight, ICS is running great for me. I had a battery drain issue but it appears to have resolved itself.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but what came out today is the same ROM, just in a different format. Be patient, people are working on improving it, and the official version should come out soon as well. CM9 or 10 isn't in the too distant future as well, I'm guessing we'll have it by Thanksgiving.
I gave up using it, because I had constant crashes (not actual crashes, the system was still running, ie Pandora kept playing but the UI stopped responding) and I got molasses slow wifi. Most people have reported no wifi issues, however.
OK, that's quite alright. Thanks for the reply.

The thread i posted today is the exact same as the original post about the stock ICS, i just made this one flashable. Also i havent had any problems with it other than the backlit keyboard. Im making a debloated one ATM so you can look foward to that with a couple of tweaks.
