[Q] GSM Desire usable in the US? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
i will be living in California from March to July and therefore i'd like to know if i can use my GSM Desire from Germany in the US?
I understand that in europe GSM is used and in the US mostly CDMA. I know there are GSM networks as well in the US.
I've read somewhere that i won't be able to use HSDPA in the US, but only EDGE. Is that true? It would be really annoying if it were.
And if so, is there a way to turn my GSM Desire into a CDMA Desire? Somehow flashing another RADIO oder whatever?
Thanks for all the answers!
Regards,
Muuhmann

i think t-mobile support the same frequency for there 3g/hsdpa as eu desires

Really? That would be awesome!
Can anyone using t-mobile usa confirm this?

Sorry to chime in a little late.
I moved from Belgium to the US bringing with me a European T-Mobile Germany Desire. It works fine on the T-Mobile USA network, the only problem is that I can't get 3G or 4G to work. The only way so far to get internet access on my phone is through wifi.
I read somewhere that 2G is supposed to be supported but I came here on these forums to find out how and why, because I can't make it work..
Hope this is somehow helpful..

Hi chbau,
thanks for letting me know.
3G and 4G (that would be the "H"-symbol, right?) aren't working, if I understand you correctly?
But in the next sentence you also say that you don't get 2G (that would be the "E"-symbol) to work, am i correct?
That would be a real pain in the a**. That would mean no mobile internet.

HTC Touch Pro 2 running on HSDPA 850MHz 3G network

I know my question might be really stuppid but anybody knows if there is any software (ROM) possibility to make the HTC TP2 run on the HSDPA 850MHz? I have just bought one that might arrive next week but I guess I will need to change my carrier.

no there isnt and will not be until a US carrier takes the device. That will not be a rom change either, they will have the radio enabled which only HTC can allow
Thanks a lot.
Wait for At&T to release??
Safe to assume the same as touchpro/fuze? Have different chipset for 850 networks?

Hi Mallman,
I already got the Touch Pro2, but I'm unable to get signal on 850. Would it be possible to change the radio once it is released for US carrier?
I'm using the phone on Mexico with the carrier Telcel. I'm only getting Edge.

Omar

What rom, tmo tp2?

I really don't get it. Was wondering what rom goes with USA t-mo tp2? cdma or gsm ones.
I know that t-mo tp2 is gsm but I just dont want to brick my phone.
Going to use it in Europe. And what rom to use as well ?
Thank you

If you have the T-Mobile USA TP2 it's a GSM phone, and if you want to flash a custom rom it should be chosen from the GSM ones.
As for which ROM is best for use in Europe, it doesn't matter.
Edit: I assumed you're talking about an OS-ROM...but if you're talking about a radio-ROM then maybe some work better than others in different locations.
But, as far as I know, the TMo USA rom won't be able to access 3G signal in Europe because its radio hardware uses different frequency/bands for 3G than is used in Europe. It will work with regular GSM bands, though.

As i saw here, few people were using 3G in Europe (Turkey and Germany) without any problems.

A T-MoUSA-branded TP2 in Europe and using a 3G data connection? If that's true, I'd be glad. I'd like the option of high-speed data on my TMoUSA phone while over there...

Sorry for asking. Did i understood correctly, that T won't let you use 3G unless phone is purchased from them?

Tmo has a weird 3G frequency, and this phone's radio doesn't support it.

a nexus one is $530 and on contract there is a certain required plan that doesn't support family plans.
HTC desire and Tmobile
So if i understand it correctly,
Desire is NOT coming to T mobile for Sure ..
It will not work with T mobile frequencies, esp 3G network
which carrier will it work with ... better not AT&T
so basically no point of buying an unlocked phone then ..

It is rumored that AT&T will get the Desire. Wait it out until April-June. Also, if Telstra gets the Desire, AT&T customers can POSSIBLY import one and MAYBE catch 3G.
As far as "T" goes, I don't know if they will get the Desire since...well...there is the NX-1.
Either way, you will not be able to get 3G speed if you import the Desire. So if you want 3G, go with the Nexus. If not...go with the Desire
Does T-Mo UK have the same 3G frequencies and whatnot as T-Mo US? Because according to MoDaCo's webiste, T-Mo UK IS getting the Desire. So if T-Mo US doesn't, we could always import and throw in our sim cards :]

The UK Desire wont work on US TMo 3G. Its radio only does 2100/900 and 2100 is what TMo UK uses. TMo US uses the 1700 frequency. Ironic that the Nexus 1 radio does 1700/2100/900 so it works on TMo UK 3G.

Telstra Desire avaliable April 27th

Those of you who wish for 850 Mhz 3G, your day is coming. Telstra and HTC have confirmed that April 27th is the release date: http://www.computerworld.com.au/article/341055/htc_confirms_telstra_desire_plans/?fp=4194304&fpid=1
Isn't it like $750-800 outright? Makes you wonder how much a U.S. resident would have to pay to import one
Here is the page I was referring to - http://www.phonesreview.co.uk/2010/03/26/htc-desire-for-free-on-telstra-april-27th/
Awesome news! Currently got an iPhone, and really want to ditch it and go Desire. I am currently a Telstra staff member, but will be leaving before release of the phone so cant get it on a staff plan
SO help me out with this. 850mhz 3G is the same as US at&t, right? And does this suggest that the desire hardware is actually tri-band 3G and just radio ROM locked somehow, or are they manufacturing a different phone for Telstra that will not have the 900/2100mhz band?? Obviously what I;m getting at is that, if one lives in asia but often travels to the USA, should I wait and try to get one of these telstra phones so I can use 3G in both China and USA? apologies if I've put foot in mouth RE 3G band stuff, please do correct me if I've said something silly!
THANKS

I am curious also. I know that the Telstra HD works on AT&T's 3G network. So there might be a possibility that it could catch 3G in the United States. I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to network bands so hopefully someone in the "know" can chime in
Hmmm, this review of a Telstra unit says it goes on sale tomorrow! I wonder if thats true.

[Q] US Provider for European Desire

Hi there, I gonna be in the US for one year and plan to bring my desire with me. Is there an american provider using frequencies the european desire is capable of?
Is it possible to chance supported frequencies by flashing another radio or are they hardware fixed?

I think T-Mobile. You should check with them. Anyways the Desire is quad-band so you are in a good position to find a carrier.
Sry i forgot to mention that I am mainly concerned about 3G. Calling and texting shouldn't be a problem anywhere but I would really like to use a dataplan and use 3G.
