Media scanner running twice - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Any one else notice media scanner running twice when the phone boots?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

Yes, it happens all the time. The first time takes about 30 seconds. Then it does it one more time for like 1-3 seconds.

It depends on how much stuff you got on your sdcard.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

Mine was taking forever...
Create a file named ".nomedia" and put it in any directory you want the media scanner to skip (top level, and it will skip subdirectories).
Don't do like me and wonder where all your ringtones went and why your gallery is empty after putting ".nomedia" in /sdcard.

I have had a few issues with Gallery. I had the issue you are and sometimes when I try to select a wallpaper it doesn't set either. I grabbed QuickPic from the Market and I almost never use Gallery anymore.

Yep, I've seen the wallpaper not setting many times, not the freeze issue though, and I'm even running at 800mhz.
I delete the stock gallery. Actually, right now it's just renamed with .bak at the end so it isn't installed. I hated the gallery sensor bug. And quickpic is better imo

Weird Vibrations

I have a weird problem with my phone. Every so often, my phone wjll vibrate twice, in two really short bursts that arent powerful at all. It is completely random. And whenever im playing music, it will stop the music for 5 seconds. If anyone knows what this is it would be greatly appreciated because this is happening on my new phone, as well as my last two galaxy s 2's (ive gotten 3 replacements)

What apps do you have that give off frequent notification? Do you have facebook, friendcaster, word w/f, etc.? Can you give us a small run down?
you can also download betterbatterystats (free here on XDA) and look at what frequently runs perhaps it appears as a wakelock.
or you can always look at logcat

It's a kernel crash. It's a part of android. It usually happens to let you know that it crashed but android reloads where it last left off. Hence the reason for the gap in music. If you press home immediately after you will catch it trying to finish reloading.

Try running master's kernel cleanser and reinstalling the kernel, that's a place to start

Is the same app running every time it happens? It may be a 3rd party app that isn't completely compatible running on your phone. Try deleting any third party widgeta.. then going into your task manager and clearing your memory. Then add one widget at at time til it starts doing it. If it doesn't do it, then open one of your e eryday apps at a time till you have the vibrating again. You may find some crappy lil app that you installed is causing all the problems.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA
Ill try that thanks

Browser bug that's been present on every ICS build!

Ok I've never had any real problem with ICS but this one bug drives me crazy and I never see anyone mention it here. Whenever I'm listening to music and try to browse the Web it just constantly keeps scrolling up. This happens every time the speaker is in use. If I use a wired headset or my my stereo bluetooth set to listen to music it does not do this. It even happens if you get a text message and your notification plays so it's definitely related to the speaker. I'm sure I'm not the only one who gets this so why is it never brought up? Maybe a fix from one of our wonderful devs?? I've been avoiding dl'in a third party browser but I guess maybe it's time

I would think most people don't report it because they don't use the stock browser. I have never even opened the stock browser since I got this phone the day it came out.

Lol guess I'm alone on this. Thinking about trying chrome and see if it works. I just hate having two browsers. That's why I got rid of Dolphin.. And I was bored of it too! The reason I use the stock is cuz I like that inverted rendering option to save battery.

When I do use chrome I use the themed version rujelus has in his rom updater.

I was curious so I tried this on FI03 and can't duplicate it. I tried with poweramp and the built in music player. What are the exact steps you take to get that to happen? I want to see if I can reproduce it.

It's been a problem for me in every ICS builds since I've had this phone. I don't take no steps I just have any music app whether it's the built in music player or Pandora playing and if I try to use the browser it's a p.i.t.a because it'll just keep scrolling up unless I stop my music. Even if I'm not listening to music and a text comes in the sound makes it scroll up. Something about my speaker and browser are not playing nicely with each other. It's plain weird. I'm using chrome at the moment and the issue is gone with it. So far I hate it tho. Can't even set a home page wth lol

Ring tone lag

When my text messages reach cap my ring tone starts to lag and not play fully. Also my screen flickers sometimes. I'm sorry if this has been posted already but I can not find it. I assume most people on here don't reach text cap. We are most likely nerds right?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Nerds indeed ha. But I have not had an issue with any sort of ring lag. I just use the beep for messages though.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
I have seen this asked once maybe around 2 weeks ago if I'm remembering right. But I don't remember if they found a solution or not. If I can find it ill let you know.
When you say they reach cap what do you mean exactly? Do you mean the point where it starts auto deleting when you reach the set number of stored messages?
If you delete some/many/all of your texts does it work right again? If you do have auto delete set , does it still happen if you turn that off?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Yeah when they start auto deleting, I have it set at 200. And yes it does stop when I delete the thread but I don't want to have to do that. It does stop if I turn off auto delete but when I did that my text app was super slow opening because it got to full.

Ok. Well at least now we can be fairly sure we know what causes it. I know its not what you are going to want to do but you could either turn off the auto delete option, manually assign a much shorter tone to any contacts that get this high, or try this.... set the limit to something like 500, then when you reach that point set it back down to 200 and see if it deletes everything back down to that point. Then set back to 500 until it happens again. Or try turning it off and when you feel its time to clean house turn it back on, let it delete everything back to 200, and turn it off again. I don't know if it'll even work this way but may be worth a try.
I know these are just workarounds, but they may be easier to deal with than messed up notification tones at least until a fix of some sort is found.
Another possibility is using a 3rd party app, but I couldn't tell you which to go with there.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I'm going to try that 500 to 200 thing because I know I would forget to delete them. Thanks for the help.

Let me know if that actually works. I'm curious about it myself now.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Yeah it worked I already had it cap at 500. I put it down to 200 and waited a while and it works fine now. I am using the whistle ringtone that came on the phone btw.

Very cool! So when you get to 500 and set it back to 200, it does delete the 300 oldest msgs? Then you set it back to 500 till next time right?
I know that's pretty much what I said earlier. Just making sure it worked how I thought it would.
Anyway, I'm glad it did!
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Yeah it did, well I think. There is no way to count them as far as I know. It does work now though, the ringtone that is. To be honest I don't like that u gave to do this.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
I don't blame you. Like I said, its just a work around, not a fix. Maybe another build would be better?
Actually I just thought of something else. A lot of audio issues have been solved by removing MusicFX.apk and .odex from /system/app. If you're rooted you could try that as well. If it fixes it flash DSP Manager to replace it. I have a copy if you need it. Just let me know
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I'm not rooted but I can root. I won't have time to do this until tomorrow at about 7 pst so ill try it then.

Make sure your media players arent still running in the background and that your network programs arent keeping your phone awake by scanning for new media every few minutes...
When my phone used media excessively, I just went into my media players (allshare, dice player, mx player, UPnPlay, XBMC, etc) and made sure media scans were set accordingly and then shut my phone off and let it charge to full strength.... worked for me

Thanks for the reply. I tried that also. Upnp un installed already. Even took of the battery n reboot couple of times but the DRM Protected thing and media storage still killing my battery
Sent from my SGH-T889 using xda premium
What you ladies and gents are staring at is a wake lock. In this case, due to the MediaScannerService.
There are a few different causes, one being some corrupt image, sound or video file somewhere on your SD card.
Solutions range from killing the service to finding the troublesome files and deleting them.
Good luck,
Darkshado

A few games I play trigger the MediaScanner services to come on and keep the phone awake (wakelock). One being NFS:MW. If you long press the home button after playing it and swipe it away it will kill it.
