[Q] ??Tasker SMS GPS locate lost phone?? - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've searched the far corners of the internet for how to get the retrieve location by sms functioning in Tasker. I've downloaded and applied both locate by sms profiles (locateme and locate by sms) from the Tasker wiki, neither work. I receive a return message with a link but the link takes me to a generic page in "Google-Places". I've also tried to use a separate profile to lock gps, as was suggested in some threads on other sites. I bring this directly to the Epic forum to see if any Epic owners have gotten a Locate by SMS Tasker profile to work. If you have gotten it to work would you post your context and tasks w/ variables. Thanks a ton to anyone who helps. This has been plaguing me since I bought the app.

I'm a Tasker power-user, (I posted the Weather-adaptive alarm clock on the wiki), and I've been meaning to work on my "SOS" profile that alarms, vibrates (an SOS in Morse code, no less), flashes the LED, snaps and uploads pictures, redirects outgoing calls to my Google Voice number, and, of course, returns GPS coordinates. So far it does everything except upload photos and return GPS (kind of important!) If I've got some spare time this afternoon (gf is on my case to clean the house) then I'll see if I can get it to work.
EDIT - Okay, so what's been causing problems thus far is the sheer amount of time it's taking my Epic to acquire a GPS lock. It's just timing out constantly. How do you get a GPS location from a phone that refuses to achieve a lock?!

Thanks for the assistance. You probably already know about the timeout adjustments for gps etc. I will see if I can get a lock through gmaps or gizmo and then send the sms code. Let me know if you come up with anything.

Yeah... maybe I'm just having bad luck or whatever but my GPS just isn't locking at all. I send the SMS, my GPS flicks on, and it tries to get a location, but no dice. I've maxed Tasker out at 240 seconds but it wouldn't make a difference if it was 1000 seconds at this point. I can't get a lock at all. I'm going to try a few things to see if I can get it to cooperate. I'm getting the return SMS but all I get is %LOC instead of the GPS coordinates, and looking at Google Maps it's easy to tell why; I've got a GPS ring with a radius of over a mile circling my position.

im trying to get it working too, it all works except for when i get the coordinates it says im buy nigeria in a ocean................any thoughts?

For whatever reason I just tested it after getting a lock and it sent back coordinates. I know the gps cache is messed up. Is that why I can always get a lock at/near school but never at home? I'm near school right now and used the profile located on the wiki. Battery % did not work however. Oh well, glad to finally see some progress. Should I have problems with getting a gps lock 10miles from my school?

Good to see you're making progress. After nearly 3 days with absolutely no GPS lock on my phone, I've reflashed and got GPS functioning again. Going to retest my Tasker profile as soon as Titanium Backup is done restoring my apps.

Obviously it thinks you're at latitude and longitude coordinates 0,0. I'll post up a new profile with a different way of pulling up the phone's location in Google Maps; I don't like the way they did it in that profile, not how I would have done.

I must apologize, I did not use a wiki profile. I used a profile that references a separate profile to establish a lock. I figured out why I cannot get a lock at home. I use a femtocell and its gps is terrible (off by a couple hundered miles) and when aGPS tries to aid in locate the nearest satellites they are way off.
For those that may still be having trouble.
Create profile w/ Name: GetGPS and Context: Location (doesn't matter where you are)
Task "Stop"
done
Create profile w/ Context "Received Text" (whatever you want)
Create Task with this
1)GPS On
2)Wifi On
3)Profile Status Name:GetGPS Set:On
4)Wait 3min.
5)Send SMS Number: %SMSRF
6)GPS Off
Did this and it worked, away from home that is.

i just remember the gps on my epic sucks. its off by a few miles when i use google maps. is there a fix for this? ive read this is a kwn issue for the epic. thx

so what server address does that use to get gps ?

I'm not sure but I believe Tasker uses Gmaps for its positioning. When you set up the GetGps profile that it references, the map looks identical.

So what's the adress? Don't I need to type it in the new profile ??

No the way the second profile references the first there is no web address needed. It gets a lock and automatically populates the location variable then the second profile references the first (location variable) and replies to the text accordingly. It is the first time I've gotten it to work. Hope it helps.

Seems counterproductive to have a program running that extends your battery.
JuiceDefender has been doing this for ages. I'll try it out to see how it compares, but I doubt it could improve on it at all. Doesn't look like there are any unique features.
IM trying this on my EVO 4G and I am not sure if it is really SYNCING my account at all with this program... I have left auto-sync turned on and all this program is doing is turning off data when screen is off and back on every 2 hours and also turns it on when I unlock the screen.
However, I dont know how this will sync my accounts.. if I data is off and a scheduled sync comes, will the data come back on?
so far I dont think it does.. I was testing GREEN POWER which had a setting to sync every so many minutes.. but it only went up to every 30 minutes which killed my battery syncing all accounts every 30 minutes..
I want to be able to use one of these battery saver programs but still be able to SYNC account to each accounts time schedule for EMAIL, facebook, weather, etc
some are every 2 hours.. some ever 6, every 8 etc
Thanks...
Hello everyone. My name is Michael and I'm the Product Manager for BatteryXL.
I'm very pleased and pleasantly surprised, to be honest, that someone made a thread about my app on such an awesome site, XDA.
First off, this app is in Beta. It's not perfect nor complete by any means and it will continue to be developed and polished for the foreseeable future.
About BatteryXL's Smart Schedules:
In the Smart Settings menu there is a field called "Smart Schedule"
Here you can select WiFi, Data, and(or) (Auto)Sync.
Then you select a Frequency to connect (15m, 30m, 45m, 1h, 2,h, 5h) and Duration of connection (30s, 1m, etc).
To answer the gentleman's question about Sync:
If Sync is selected, then WiFi or Data (or both) must also be selected. Therefore, whenever a Smart Schedule event occurs including Sync then an internet connection will be initiated (if available).
Hope this clears things up. AutoSync optimization is one of my goals for the future. I want this app to be able to save battery without any unreasonable lag time between emails, social network updates.
Again, please feel free to address any further concerns or questions.

Still confused. If your program has turned data off but then one of my accounts is trying to sync based on its sync schedule in accounts and sync (in Android system settings), will data be turned back on to sync and then off again? I have the setting in your program to turn on data for 5 minutes every 2
Hours along with sync which i also leave that setting on for screen on and off. Let me know.

Sorry to say this, but this app looks like a Juice Defender rip off: it has exactly the same options (some are still missing) and it has a different interface.
Does it actually bring anything different from Juice Defender?

Yeah, it brings a GPS lock that doesn't turn off! Click off GPS in the app, exit and it comes right back up until I turned off GPS with the power widget. Having to bother with turning GPS on and off when I wasn't using any other app that needed it made it an instant uninstall. Honestly, the app seemed shady to me, and don't see a reason to use it over JuiceDefender if you are having battery issues.

Hi cvmass,
The only GPS controls BatteryXL features are a manual on/off (which shares the same functionality as the Power Control widget) and automatic enable/disable based on various events like 'screen unlock'.
If your GPS is turning on or off unexpectedly then that is obviously a bug related to your hardware and not part of the intended user experience. If you want to send me your batteryxl.txt (log) I could work on fixing the problem.
We're not trying to rip-off JD, it's a matter of us trying to create the best app we can to help everyone get more out of their Android devices. Saying we're shady is like saying Android copied iPhone because both has touchscreens, apps, sync, phone, etc... This is a matter of convergent design were in order to save battery power, both apps are regulating your connections based on a series conditions and triggers. I'll be frank, we've used JD here in the lab, frankly we felt like we can do better and that's why we made this app.

Currently, the smart (sync) schedule only operates while the screen is off. but, this will change as of v1.2.4.
According to your settings mentioned above, BatteryXL will enable autosync every 2 hours for an interval of 5 mins. During this 5 mins, all your apps that have synced information are polled for updates.
The problem with the smart schedule now is with push services that assume you are constantly connected to the web. so sometimes, syncs get missed. we are working on it.
Let me know if you have more questions.
I've used and uninstalled BatteryXL twice now. It currently offers a night mode which juicedefender doesn't (for free anyway). First time I got rid of it due to instability (most likely culprit) the second time is because of the data finesse.
I only want to use cellular data when wifi is not available, but when you enable mobile data BXL first of all uses cellular data then wifi is turned on using that. If you turn off mobile data it actually switches off all mobile data so wifi won't work either for WAN transfers. I need option to keep cellular data disabled but leave mobile data on.
Thank you so much for bringing that to our attention - we'll add that to the features list to be added soon. So BatteryXL will basically disable cellular when wifi connects successfully and enable it when wifi is off or can't find a network.
It might be even better to make the mobile data button actually mean cellular data and not mobile data as this is what I thought it meant so was confused when it was turning off ability for wifi to fetch data. You could make mobile data an optional component elsewhere as I think this is a rarer item.
Or add an additional icon for cell data to the common row you have in every state paragraph. This makes the control more granular and ensures no cell data will ever be used even without wifi (which is what I would want for many scenarios anyway). Re-reading my post I can see how I misstated that! Certainly both scenarios could be provided for. Personally it depends when I need data, I can change my calling plan accordingly from month to month.
EDIT: Mobile data only seems to affect cellular data (as you'd expect) but why when it is disabled in BXL does wifi go 'grey' and not get any data, odd. This is why I thought it throttled any data and the toddle for cell was separate.
Does this app still make the GPS constantly look for a signal? I liked the UI a bit better than JD, but it just didn't work when I tried it.

That sounds like GPS partially enabled, like the GPS is on but A-GPS isn't. When that happens to me apps like navigation constantly moan about finding location before they can function.

BXL Uninstall question
I installed it on my I9000 but it was to complicated for me and could not get it to work along with my Email client so I uninstalled it, rebooted my phone and got something I have never seen before when my phone was booted, a message from Superuser stating that System is asking for superuser permission.
Is that natural or is it something that BXL left that caused this?
I'm using Doc's Master ICS V5 ROM.
Thanks
Ophir
I'm not too sure about this app. Been trying it for a day and can see somewhat of a difference, but nothing drastic..
One thing I do like about BatteryXL over JD or almost all the other similar apps is that it's not only free and not crippleware, but there are no ads. I hope it stays that way!
I have had some issues with the app locking up, but acceptable considering it's in beta - hopefully still under active development and improving.
i just tried this app and uninstalled it after it started to make phone calls all by itself to *22899. i would end the call and then it would call it right back. seems like a good app, and could work but that turned me off of it. not sure about the whole mobile data off option though.

[Q] Google Maps always running (even if I stopped)

Hi,
Maps appears always in the battery stats. I don't use Maps. I don't have GPS enabled (I enable it only when I use navigation software; not maps). Location services are always disabled.
When I force stop Maps, this app start itself automatically (right after stopping; sometimes afte some time).
How should I stop it permanently. It drains battery not that much.. but still would like to save some percent.
Thanks!!

I believe you can disable it, if you dont like/have that option you can freeze it with Tibu.
Edit: Strange though it doesn't ever show in my bat stats. Are you using Latitude? I guess it could be showing because of Navigation.
I noticed my g-maps kept showing up in recent apps, and it turned out that it was because of an updated. Once I went into maps, and saw the "new features" page, it hasn't done it since.
Probably not related, but figured I'd throw it out there.
I agree with the Pirate; seems like latitude is signed in.
Thanks. I did following:
- started maps and 'accepted' new features.
- signed out from latitude. Yes.. seems that it was signed in all the time
Will report later if the maps will appear or not in battery stats again.
Thanks!!!

For sure signing out of latitude will save you some juice!
I have issues with google maps.
Version 6.3
Gps and location disabled not signed to latitude. But still have 3 google map service running. Quite annoying.
from what I've read around the internet, this is a problem across devices.
I don't use Latitude (never have), and have turned off location services. But Maps is still a persistently active service/process. I posted on a Google board, so hopefully they will reply.
Maybe the operative question is: who isn't experiencing this issue? Maybe we can figure out why.
Maps is always running for me too, but it is never using enough battery to even be on the battery usage statistics. I rarely see it in the recent apps list either.
I went a few days disabling Maps and noticed absolutely no difference in battery either. I'm perfectly OK with it running and taking up 9.3mb of RAM.

Well i never have maps show up in my battery list, nor in system panel list. But i do see maps running in my settings app menu, 1 service and 1 process. So never seems to use any resources for me.
Google needs to fix this...can't really do anything to remedy this besides freezing or disabling the package when you are not planning to use it.
I've noticed considerably increased battery life with the apk frozen...even with latitude off and location updating disabled Maps causes some battery drain.
Clear data is a solution . . . sort of!
By clearing the data of the maps (in the application manager), you can have the Google maps drop off from your running app list.
But, all the setup/data in the Google maps will be lost by doing so !
so, this is a solution if you don't care the setup / cached data.
I have a Captivate with rooted stock Gingerbread. I have to kill Maps ever so often when it shows up. It's always low double digits percentage of battery usage for me.
No latitudes (Join Latitudes shows up in Maps->More). GPS not enabled.
I allways unninstall it as i dont need it, but i do want it but will wait till they fix it. For me the best map and gps is me ( roll down the window and ask for directions)

Sorry for the near-necropost, but I'm coming at a similar issue, from a slightly different angle, and wanted to scope out any thoughts anyone might have here instead of opening a new thread.
My issue with Maps constantly running is no as focussed on the battery life issue, but rather privacy. I run LBE (basically a selective App permission firewall) and one of the features of this program is the ability to Allow/Prompt/Deny certain application privileges. Well, I set it to prompt me to allow Maps to obtain my location, thinking that it would be only a minimal annoyance since I only use Maps once or twice a week.
Think again. Did you know that while Maps sits there, open, in the background, it checks your location constantly? (well, once every half our or so). I finally set LBE to allow maps to get my location without prompting me, but LBE still flashes a notification bar alert to let me know when an app has requested something like my location. Sure enough, every half hour or so, Maps asks for my location, regardless of how long (measuring even into the days) it has been since I have actually used the app. I don't have Latitude running.
This cannot possibly be something that everyone else is just cool with?
Please tell me this isn't just an accepted evil without a solution?
Root and delete maps from /system/app. do t hardly use it anyways. There is also an older version somewhere that doesn't run in the background and you can actually stop.

Google Maps is running for the network location... barely uses any battery life (having your screen on for a minute will use more battery life) and will not slow down your phone. You guys are freaking out over nothing

No, that's not the case, or at least that's not the behavior that I am referring to.
Looking at the event log in LBE, there are actually two things that Maps is doing at regular intervals in the background:
"Track Your Position"
"Obtain Your Current Position"
That's how it is worded. I'll also add that I have experienced other apps where LBE asks me whether I'll grant permission to obtain my "Network Location". That is a distinct permission (at least as far as LBE categorizes them), and is not what I'm concerned about with Maps.
Regarding the suggestion of uninstalling Maps, I still use it, as mentioned, once or twice a week.
Google tells us that to check the "use location data" means background location data will be sent. Weird thing is practically everyone has a blind spot for it - the old not-reading-the-EULA problem perhaps...
I personally think the info could be of interest for population densities, average distance travelled per day, literally where people go and when. With the obvious proviso that none of it is personally identifiable. Just aggregates...
Google is actually sitting on a goldmine of info, but realistically it will be parlayed into advertising profitability.
To be more precise: "Allow Google's location service to collect anonymous location data... ...Collection may occur even when no apps are running."

Phone got stolen. Need help with privacy!

My girlfriend got her one x stolen by some loser. after the incident she did everything that can be done about her privacy details.
the first thing she did was to get her line suspended from the service provider, then she went home immediately and changed all her passwords from facebook, ubersocial, gmail etc.
However, the problem now is that we figured that the thief would still have access to all that if he or she did not sign out. I tried searching for many ways to remotely log out and only manage to get facebook out of the way as they provide the option to log out of every other devices once we change the password. However, as for gmail and ubersocial.. we didn't find a possible way to do so.
IWe tested it through my S3. I went on my dlaptop and change my password for ubersocial and then I turned off and on my phone again only to find out that I can still tweet and read tweets even after my password was changed. It's very frustrating to know that the thief still has access to her privacy despite all her actions. if it helps, I'm from Malaysia.
PS: I tried androidlost but it requires me to send an sms to her phone to authenticate however she already terminated her line. she does not have phone lock, or any apps like lookout installed. So yeah, please help asap.
Thank you in advance.

But you stilul need the phone to acces it. And it requieres some pin code.
Also go to pc sign in her google account..go to android market in pc and install this remotely to phone..maybe if thief gets online through WiFi or anything this will track the phone down..

Perhaps it's too late to tell OP to used LockOut Plan B App..
Best option would have been.. install an app like android lost from play.google.com remotely and then control the phone from their website androidlost.com
You might even have got your phone back.
However since you have already changed your passwords, installing apps remotely won't probably be possible, still give it a try see if it works.

the first thing she did was to get her line suspended from the service provider, then she went home immediately and changed all her passwords from facebook, ubersocial, gmail etc.

Best app for this is gotya security app it will take photos if wrong lock key is entered and send it to your Gmail or Facebook with location. You can also play with the thief by sounding alarms, force your phone to ring any number, request location, display a lock screen message, take photos, and even unlock your phone all by sms commands and lots more its only £2 on market and has had 2 people arrested for stealing my phone not only that its handy when you think someone is snooping thru your phone at work

the thief would've sold ur phone to a shop anyway.
why worry lol
once he sold that phone, and once someone buys the phone, and the gps satellite gets activated (after the buyer inserts his simcard) , then u can track ur phone remotely. make a police report and keep the case on ongoing status.
No chance.
The phone will be wiped so any tracking app will be gone.
i use Zoner Antivirus since i got my HOX, to hunt eventually thieves down.. you can track via GPS and sent SMS with coords to another (chosen) phone number. it also notices you when some1 switches sim card
Good luck with urs!
e: i read that https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.avast.android.mobilesecurity&hl=de this app is the best anti theft thing.. its free and should be the best (4,7 out of 5) maybe it'll help u to install via Playstore or sth like that

I know it doesn't help the OP now,
But phone locator pro is what you should have.
Makes it difficult to uninstall
Locks your phone by text
Phone automatically locks if a different sim is used.
Takes a picture of your thief & emails it you
Locates your phone, even if data WiFi is disabled (it will turn it on)
Etc etc.
---
Because OP had no safe guards, I think IMEI block is the best he can hope for.

Just checked that app, has all the same features as PhoneLocator Pro - so, either will do.
Edit: Cerberus doesn't work properly on the HOX, first thing I noticed was the 'lock with pass code' doesntnwork at all.
The 'enter your pass code' screen doesn't show n the HOX, and then user just needs to swipe to unlock. - so, its not locked at all.
-----
I tested this app on the Nexus 7, and everything works as it should.
This app definitely has issues on the HOX.
Phone locator pro works perfectly on the HOX, but not at all on the Nexus 7. (Its not available in the play store, probably as its 'phone locator' )

ZV9 still didn't fix software issues.

Stock Sprint Optimus G. Updated to latest ZV9 firmware. Performance tweeks and new kernals are great and all, but the core functionality of the phone is still broken. The exchange email is inexcusable. A smartphone is designed as a personal assistant and organizer first before media or anything else.
The Bluetooth issue is embarrassing. I am using LG Tone+ 730's which shouldn't have any issue from the same manufacturer. My Jeep uses a base Uconnect 130s/RES system that is in numerous Chrysler vehicles and doesn't have the same issues with other devices like the Galaxy S3 or EVO LTE that I have previously used.
I know the dev community can't wave their hands and make it work, especially on a not rooted phone. But anyone have a clue how to push this up to LG outside of their awful support site?
Bump, recently moved thread.
What Bluetooth issue do you have and I don't use exchange so I wouldn't know anything about that issue
You bump your own 2 week old thread for issues that people apparently don't have. I know I sure don't. Of course I don't use Exchange and my bluetooth works fine

ZV9 fixed my Exchange issue, although it was not a connectivity issue. Are you sure your credentials are correct? SSL vs non-SSL? Tried on mobile network instead of wifi?
I use the same LG Tone and have 0 issues. And know customers that use exchange and have no issues. Are you sure its not the credentials?

RE: Bluetooth, I believe the OP is referring to the fact that this phone will randomly disconnect from a connected bluetooth device. I have two devices I regularly connect to, my car and my home phone system. The phone connects and remains connected to my car. However, it WILL disconnect from the home phone either randomly, or as soon as I try using the home phone to make or receive a linked call. The second image in the OP's post shows the message that comes up on the phone. It can't entirely be the fault of the connected home phone system because I used to connect my Optimus S to the system perfectly every time and never ever dropped a connection. The OG drops the connection to the home system without fail every single time. If I recall, it sometimes worked on ZV7 but never on 8 or 9.

Thank you, THIS.
Instead of shook's dumb response. My screen caps aren't random. And I'm not the only person having these issues. There are actually numerous mixed threads floating around the general forum or elsewhere. I repeat, the core functionality of this phone is not stable.
I exchanged my phone and started getting the issue shown in screen shots by OP. Spent all week trying to resolve the problem just to find out that my work exchange server had updated security and only allowed ten devices to be connected. It did not remove my old devices from the list and so I had maxed my limit. The old device remove process is in the outlook web client only under web mobile options. MS Outlook did not give me any similar options.
Anyways, the point I am trying to make is it may be related to your exchange server. Have you looked into that?

I was aware of the ten device outlook limitation. But I only have two devices registered currently. I have appropriately set up everything, the phone is just no good.

[Q] Why my GPS cannot lock (with many satellites seen)

Hi, recently I found the GPS on my Galaxy Nexus refuse to lock properly.
I used maps for years, and the locating seems good enough (it seems that these locations are from wifi or other source now).
Recently I installed an app to track my route, which really needs true GPS, and the problem began.
Every morning, when I go from my home to work, the GPS just not work at all (no lock). Sometimes it works when I leave home, but minutes later, it lost lock and never gets back during the whole route (even after I reboot the phone and clear the AGPS data with GPS Test). After I got to the workplace, and tried again, the GPS is still not working.
What's surprising me is the GPS works fine when I leave from my work pace and head to my home in the afternoon. It locks fast and works well all the way. (This is the same route in the morning)
The same problem happens for several days (bad in the morning, good in the afternoon).
With GPS Test (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chartcross.gpstest), I notice the phone really gets a lot of satellites(>9) with good signals, but somehow none of them are used to calculate my location (they are all grey in GPS Test's satellite view).
Does anyone have any idea what's the problem and how to fix it?
The phone is stock android 4.3 unrooted.
Thanks.
The attached file is the screenshot of GPS Test this morning.

PS. the gps works great at noon, have no idea why it refuse to work every morning.
I have a similar problem, when I leave work from a particular exit my gps doesn't find anything for quite a while, where as if I leave from another it gets it straight away.
The only thing I can think of is there are lots of buildings and roofs around that first exit, where as the second one is straight into a carpark. Maybe there is too much interference when you leave home, but not work?

The thing is when I leave home at night, the GPS works well, but not in the morning. On the other hand, when I arrival at work, the GPS still not working, but it works at noon.
I try to figure if the timing is the problem. For example, if much more interference in the morning or the satellites decide not to communicate with me at that time?
As you can see in my attachment, it actually found a lot of satellites, but no data received from any of them. Don't know why, and never noticed before.

Have you checked/changed the server you use for gps? I had to change mine from US to oceania (depends where you are) at one point and that seemed to help

Great idea, I never would have thought of that on my own! I normally use FasterFix from the Play Store to set the GPS server to US. After the first day, locks were very slow and inacurate, and by the second day, I stopped getting locks altogether. I tried flashing back to stock, still didnt work. Then i came across your post, and after setting it to Oceania, I got a lock in under 10 seconds. Many thanks!

Hello stranger,
I signed up to this forum just to reply to your post. I recently installed Paranoid Android 4.4 (final build) on my Gnex and GPS was not working at all (would show 0/0 satellites, sometimes 1 or 2, but NEVER lock). Where as previously on PA-3.99 it was fine. After scouring the internet for the last two days and trying anything that didn't involve me wiping, reflashing, etc. your post single handedly saved me from doing any of the extreme measures. I just went to download faster fix, but then stumbled upon fasterGPS. This app, using lovely root access (yay root!), allowed me to set my NTP to North America and then Canada. Now my GPS works perfectly! Thank you again so much!
