[Q] Can't Upgrade to hboot 0.92 - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have hboot 0.79 and have been running Virtuous ROM 3.1 for some time. I am trying to get the latest Virtuous ROM (3.2) installed, but it requires hboot 0.92. I followed the instructions and downloaded the hboot (both the 5mb+ file and 3mb file) and placed it in the root of the sdcard. It sees it, but then won't ask me to flash, it just bypasses it. I tried formatting the sdcard and put just the hboot on there. Same problem. I tried another sdcard and put the hboot on there. Each time I have downloaded it again to make sure the download is not corrupt. Same problem. Just goes to the bootloader, sees the file, I see a loading bar on the top right but no flash confirmation. I even went to clockwork recovery and tried to install the file from there, no such luck.
My questions: What I am doing wrong? How can I get this hboot installed and upgraded to 0.92?

I am also running .79 radio 2.05.00.06.11 and cannot update as well. i Have formated 5 times fat 32 and placed only the PB31IMG.Zip on the card Not in any folders. Please someone help.

Are you guys on Macs? Make sure you turn off the auto-open option in safari. Redownload hboots and do not unzip or open them. Simply rename and push to the root of the sd card. Then go from there.

Not using mac im using win 7 64 bit. I am just copying the downloaded file to the sd card formated in fat32 restarting in bootloader and all it says is checking PB31IMG.Zip then nothing happens. i did notice that its says S-on on the top of the screen in bootloader is this the problem?

Yes this is the problem, if you are S-ON this stand for Security-On, and can only flash PB31IMG.zips that have been signed by HTC, such as an RUU. you want to get S-OFF by going to www.unrevoked.com and downloading unrevoked forever. this is attain s-off and then you can flash any PB31IMG.zip, like the one you want.

Great catch on the S-ON vs S-OFF. I will try this and get back to you. I thought I had used unrevoked to upgrade the radio to 2.05.

That worked!
I used unrevoked forever, installed through recovery. Then, on the reboot, the hboot was updated. I was then able to use recovery to upgrade to the newest Virtuous. I'm so happy to finally have a reboot option on the power options.
Thank you all!

i have this same problem i have soff and am still unable to update to 0.92, what can i do?

Didn't update...
But at east it switched my phone from S-on to S-off.
SO that is a plus.
Thank you for that info.

[Q] Help newbie to create SD card

Hi guys.
Please, I need a little help. 2 days ago I bought Desire. I rooted it with UnRevoked 3.2.1. I also replaced SD card with a new 8 GB Sandisk. Now, how can I create all pertitions needed (ext3 and fat32)? I put on ROM manager, which does nothing, ie. when I select to create partition of 512 MB, it rebooted, but does nothing. I am Windows XP and Win 7 64 bit user. Can you please tell me how to create all necessary partitions AND neede Cache, ... folders on SD?
Thank you a lot,
Sandi
What exactly did you do with ROM manager?
I would just reboot into recovery (start phone with volume down, wait a few seconds till sd card check is over and select recovery) and go to "mounts and storage" and format sdcard. 512 mb ext2, rest fat32, then upgrade to ext3. Should work this way.
edit: ext partition size varies depending on the rom you flash and if it has data2sd.
Which rom do you want to flash?
There have been, in the past days alone, multiple threads about this. Maybe some searching on your one is a good idea. If that is to complicated i can narrow it down for you with a little hint: GParted
Actually, I thought that it will be this way. But this does nothing, so I am a little lost.
Regards,
Sandi
Ok, I rebooted phone. Having HBOOT 0.93. Going to down to Recovery. I got a ClockWorkMod v2.5.0.7. Going to Mounts and Storage. Then select Format sd-ext. It says: Formatting SDEXT:...
No app2sd artition found. Skipping format of /sd-ext.
So, how to create partition?
Thank you very much, Sandi
ok i thought that clockwork mod recovery was capable of partitioning sd card.
but you can flash amon ra recovery (this is the GSM version):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=839621&highlight=amon
have you got s-off? if yes, you can just flash the recovery via fastboot.
if not, you will probably have to do it with unrevoked.
edit: accidently hit the thanks button on your post, dont wonder
I have S-ON now. How can I then use AmonRa .IMG? I have no way to choose to load img file, as only load ZIP and so on are there.
Regards,
Sandi
Well, just start unrevoked and press CTRL + R (or just select file --> custom recovery...
Select the image you downloaded from the amon-ra thread and it should work. Haven't tried it with a custom one yet personally, but these instructions are also mentioned in the amon ra thread:

Once done, boot into recovery select "Partition sdcard" and use it to your likings .
Thanks anyway, I just went back to original ROM.

Sandi
Of course I wanted to get me some custom ROMS, but it finished badly.
Now I did it
I rooted with Unrevoked. I went without problems. Then I created CD for AlphaRev 1.5, rebooted PC and started process to get S-OFF.
Unfortunatelly, it said after step 3, that procedure didn't finish correctly. My HTC stuck on HTC logo screen, and it throws 2 black lines on it.
I can get to Recovery mode with power+down buttons, but what to do now. It doesn't reboot at all.
I have correct RUU exe file for my HTC, but it is not recognised. Please, any help what to do?
Regards,
Sandi

[Q] Why should I s-off my desire?

I rooted my desire last week using unrevoked and I am currently using oxygen 2.1
What are the advantages of s-offing my phone?
I have a 16gb sd card with a 512mb partition which I did through rom manager.
Please go easy on me as I'm new to all this!
Cheers
I only started rooting and flashing new roms last week and did the s-off yesterday.
From what ive found info wise rooting gives a good amount of system access but there is still a lvl of system data that cant be changed unless u use Android Developer kit and use console commands(things like boot screens and where apps install either onto the phone or as optional apps on sd/or part of a2sd).
S-off releases the last lvl of security and allows you to even access the system files on the fly using apps like root explorer to swap app files etc.
S-off isnt really needed if all u want to do is flash roms etc
As a noob thats my way of seeing s-off hopefully a senior member can clarify or correct some of this.
Also http://alpharev.nl/ explains what s-off is at the top of his website
biggest advantage of S-OFF is ability to flash a custom hboot which changes tour partition layout. in effect you have more space for apps and ROM performs really fast, faster than any A2SD+ or DATA2XXX ROM
ofc the rom has to be designed to work with custom hboot.
i belive oxygen is
If I do the s-off do I need to delete the partition of my sd card or leave as it is?
if you have your SD card partitioned with fat32 and ext(for a2sd) then no u shouldnt need to do anything.
If you havent got a ext partition on your sd card yet id personally recommend making one just for roms that use a2sd.
As part of the s-off process though the sd card doesnt need to be touched
just make sure b4 u do s-off to make a backup using the recovery mode on the phone. Some roms can be corrupted after a s-off procedure(usually not booting properly) but using the recovery u can reapply the backup as the phone was before u did the s-off.
I have now s-offed the the phone, downloaded the PB99IMG file and renamed it PB99IMG.zip
I put the PB99IMG.zip file on my sd card but when I go in to Hboot (volume down + power) the file is not found.
Do I flash it like a rom by going in to recovery and "install zip from sd card"
Thanks in advance
Edit
the phone has now found the zip file file but it fails due to cid error

I didnt bother with the optional updated hboots, unless your rom requires it I wouldnt worry about it.
was just looking at oxygen 2.1 thread and i got this
Do i need to be S-OFF or have Oxygen hboot? No, the rom will work S-ON and with any hboot layout. However the recommended set-up is S-OFF and Oxygen hboot (thanks TheGhost1233)
so dont worry about the optional hboot update
But if u want the hboot I found this might help
http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/309298-err-incorrect-cid-s-off-device.html
I have give up on installing the oxygen hboot
When I try to install the zip file from sd card in recovery(holding volume down and power) I get the cid error and the sdk method is just way to complicated for me
Well, you can still use android flasher if the fastboot method is too complicated for you
Search for it in the Developement section.

I have downloaded the Android flasher but the only instructions I can find are for flashing splash screens.
What mode should my phone be in to flash the oxygen hboot?
Cheers
I would do fastboot method if you are going to change the hboot, there is a very good thread with some extra instructions here:
http://www.oxygenrom.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=241&p=1746
Everything runs from internal memory so you can ditch all the complex partitioning work, and have a faster phone!
I ran the android flasher my hboot is
HBOOT-0.93.0001
does this mean it is done and if so what are the next steps?
Cheers
You can't use the pb99img method unless you're already s off. It is for s off people to switch hboots. For you, just download and burn the alpha rev iso onto a cd, reboot to cd, and follow instructions
Edit: just noticed that you are already s off.
Well then easiest way to switch hboot:
Reboot to fast boot (vol - and power button)
fastboot flash hboot hboot.img
Is the format of the command from dos prompt.
If you haven't installed android sdk, you can't do that.
For pb99img method, ideally use a gold card or a card with only one partition, which is fat 32
double check the file name in windows.
It should be PB99IMG.zip
Don't change the case. Make sure that there isn't an additional .zip extension on it. Try renaming it by removing the .zip part. If windows still shows the zip file icon, that means you had an additional .zip in the file name

Need help formatting SD card

Hi guys,
I've just formatted my 2gb SD card for my HTC desire using MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition. I've made 450mb as FAT (primary) and the rest as ext4 (logical). For some reason, my rom (MIUI_Au-Desire-1.10.8) doesn't think there's an SD card in the phone. I've tried taking the card in and out, same thing.
I've since re-formatted it to Fat32 and ext4 with the same thing. It isn't showing up.
When I go into recovery and mount the USB there no USB storage comes up on my PC. When I try to select 'mount SD card' I get an error saying
Error mounting SDCARD:!
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0p1)
(invalid argument)
I've got clockworkMOD Recovery v2.5.0.7 and I've tried putting ext4recoveryupdater but when I've tried installing it through Androidflasher.exe it says I need an ENG Bootloader.
I'm completely stuck and don't know what to do. I started all this because I wanted to install Runny ROM v5.1 and Runnymede_AIO_V6.0.4.3_Special_Edition, but once I ran the aroma installer, it basically frooze at the boot logo. So I figured I needed a larger ext4 partition.
So yea, any help on this would be GREAT. I'm starring at this post for replies on where to start from scratch.
Thanks for reading,
Raddest
edit: oh yea, so the only way I can 'see' the SD card is when I select 'mount USB' from the recovery.
Are you s-off?
Have you followed the guides on here to get s-off?
Just when you say you got CWM is it installed or you've got the .img for androidflasher? As aroma wont work with a non touch based recovery.
4extrecoveryupdater should be a apk and cannot be flashed by androidflasher, its meant to be installed on a rooted s-off phone.
I recommend reading the guides again and getting s-off, then installing 4ext recovery updater to get the 4ext touch based recovery; and using that recovery to partition your SD card
Edit: sorry if you've got CWM installed then all you need to do is get a 4ext touch based recovery .img and flash it with android flasher. I remember that they're a bit harder to find on the website.
The error message is probably from you trying to flash a .apk instead of a .img file
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA
Yep, I'm currently working on getting S-Off as my phone's S-On.
I've used the ext4 apk, but when it downloads and tries to flash the recovery from my rom it doesn't work. No matter what. So when it doesn't work it stores 2012-03-15-22.03_recovery.img onto my SD card (when the SD card worked).
So now I think I should concentrate on getting s-off. If I get s-off. But how will I install ext4 from my rom if I can't load my SD card?
edit: formatted the whole card to primary fat32. So if I get s-off and run ext4recovery will it flash the recovery fine?
edit 2 (just read your edit) I've already used androidflasher to try and put that 4ext img as the recovery, it says I need an ENG bootloader (or HBOT I can't remember).
No, you also need to be rooted to install a recovery from the app.
So either get root, or push the .img file from androidflasher once it fails from the app. And is on the sd card transfer it to your pc.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA
Yep, I've already installed the .img from ext4, android flasher says I need an ENG bootloader.
Yeah just get s-off and you should be fine.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA
Cool thanks. I'm just looking to see if there's a simple way to get S-off.
Using revolutionary.io
http://revolutionary.io/
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA
Yep, trying it. Says it's incompatible with this version of HTC Sync
If all works remember to backup your current rom with 4ext before flashing
Best of luck

I'm gonna un-install HTC Sync from my computer, restart, and see how it goes.
edit: just exited and un-installed (haven't restarted) and getting this;

Ok, basically burnt Alpharev to a CD, booted from the CD and used that. I got S-off fine, no problems at all. After that, booted back into miui and flashed the recovery using ext4. From ext4 I partitioned my SD card to have 800mb FAT32 and the rest ext4. Installing Runny AIO. See how I go...
All good, with alpharev to thank mainly. Was really made easy.

Cant view sd card after reformatting?

So my friend reformatted his sd card to fat32 (this was so he can pub PB31IMG.zip in his sd card and flash it using hboot he is rooted but clockwork recovery doesn't work)
Anyways when the phone is plugged in to the PC, two disk drives show up "DISK G" and "DISK F", both are completely blank.
What does this mean?
It wasn't like that before he reformatted them both to fat32 file system.

Well if they were formated they should be empty. Formating means to wipe all data and rebuild the disks file structure to fat32. Are you able to drag and drop files into the folders?
Ya they can drag and drop the problem is he formatted his internal storage as well
And hboot says "cannot find image or wrong image" when trying to flash PB31IMG.zip (put both PB31IMG and PB31IMG.zip just incase)

Not sure about that but if he's trying to fix clockwork he can flash from ROM manager. Sounds like an incorrect hboot file.

Ya thats the problem, clockwork recovery is a blank screen with two white bars on the sides for him. Its some issue with the Incredible LCD screen not seeing the recovery. Thats why he was trying to flash a working recovery but cant because hboot won't read it.

What hboot version is the phone on now. As said earlier you can flash it thru rom manager. If you have an unlockable bootloader you can fastboot flash cwm recovery img. Where are you getting the files from? Try this one http://dinc.does-it.net/Recoveries/CWM_5.0.2.0/PB31IMG.zip

I believe his hboot is 0.92 with more 0's after the 92.
Ya we tried flashing clockwork recovery and then rebooting into recovery but no luck, still a blank screen.

You can not flash cwm recovery or anything thru hboot except an officially signed ruu unless you are s-off. I would follow one of these guides to root and optionally get s-off. There is this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1506258, or this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1600904, both do the same thing just wrote up a little differently.
Thanks for all your help, I'll try those guides but the links give a 404 error.

I had an Inc for a while, I have moved on to a RAZR maxx. I haven't worked on an Inc for a while. My friend asked me to help her. She is totally stock. Low storage space warning. Factory reset , from ROM or hboot , leads to android with triangle/exclamation mark. I think she tried to update OTA and the download failed. She has 3mb free. Under "SD and phone storage" the internal phone storage lists the total and available space as "unavailable". When I try to go to recovery from hboot it sounds like a bad hard drive, not the phone vibing but a drive spinning up an stopping a couple of times. Any help or recommendations? Thanks.

You need to do an ruu thru hboot. Download this http://dinc.does-it.net/Stock_Images/4.08.605.15/PB31IMG.zip and place it on your sdcard in no folders. Boot to hboot and wait a few secs, hboot should find the file and prompt you to press vol up to install. That will ensure everything is there and not corrupt.
Then you will want to root the phone, and flash the ext4 no data limit mod, or flash a rom that its built into. That will solve the low space issue.
Fyi, these phones do not have hard drives with spinning disks like pc's. They use flash memory which is a chip, no moving parts.

I pm'd cm for help, but figured I would start a thread. I tried to do an ruu through hboot, but the file isn't recognized. I formatted the SD on my computer using SD formatter 3.1 and also formatted in the phone. I downloaded the file twice. I tried 2 sd cards. I have flashed radios and such in the past, so I am familiar with the process, and it is ignoring the file on the SD card. The phone boots up and seems to run okay, but I can't factory reset it. I know that it has flash memory, I was trying to make the point that it isn't "vibing", but it is making a slight buzz when recovery is selected. Any help is appreciated.

What hboot version doed the phone currently have. If its 1.02 or 1.07 you can try to use htcdev site to unlock it, then get a custom recovery on there. If you can accomplish that, then you can see if recovery will see the sdcard. If it can read it, you can wipe everything and flash a custom rom.
