SD card problems, Help Please! - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all, I have a 16 GB sd card (actual 14.83GB) and under Settings - SD card and Phone Storage it says that i have 7.04 GB available...basically half...
The problem is that I have nothing THAT BIG!! I copied the SD card over to my computer and it's only 852 MB...What the hell is going on?
Has anyone had this problem? or does anyone have any ideas as to how to figure out what is taking up so much space?
Help is appreciated, thank you.

Do you apps2sd or apps2ext? Also, by chance is there a folder called: LOST.DIR? Lastly, if you take the card OUT of the evo, put it into an adapter, and check free spaces on your PC what does it say? << Perhaps there's some hidden folders your PC cannot see when you just directly copy the files to your PC.

if you have downloaded a rom or somthing to it, plus music eats memory up badly, i suggest reformatting sd card.
go to settings>sd card & phone storage> unmount sd card> format
make sure you get the files you need off of it. akaics, videos, contacts, apps;etc.
If i helped, hit the thanks button!

Sounds like your card is partitioned.. move your cards over to the computer
Go into recovery
Run partition SD card
Set swap to 0mb
Partition 1 (or whatever its called: main partition ) to full amount of SD card and nothing for ext partition
Hope this was helpful!

I actually have a question regarding this.
I want to upgrade to a 16gb sd card and was wondering if there is a thread showing step by step instructions to do so.
I'm rooted and have a couple roms backed up along with titanium backing up my apps.
Do I really have to format the new sd card to fat 32? the 2gb sd card that came with it seems to work fine which I believe isn't formatted fat 32.
Is it really as easy as copying and pasting over??? I did not partition the sd card.
Also, after searching the forums I ran into a concerning thread regarding sd cards that DON'T work.... should I be worried?

If you want to transfer your files from the 2gb sd card to the 32 gb sd card just copy all files to the 32 gb sd card. Be sure to format the 32 gb sd to FAT32. I dont know how you didnt have to format your other card to fat32 unless you havent turned s-off. But anyways to format it to fat32 just plug in phone to computer( make sure you put phone on disk drive not charge only) and open "My computer"(shows all your drives ex. C:, D:, ect.) Right click on the drive that is your sd card and choose format. Make sure its in FAT32 and click format. You can do quick format too. Hope this helps

Thanks for the clarification. I was thinking it was a lot harder than just copying over the files.
I have S-Off and I am pretty sure it's not formatted FAT32. I just checked the properties and it just says "FAT" and if I go to format it the selection at default shows "FAT" as well. But if standard procedure is to format to FAT32 I will on my next sd card.

[Q] Bad SD card after rebooting the phone (HELP!!!!)

Hello I have a big problem hope somebody can help me.
I have a 16g micro sd card. RA Recovery 2.2,
this is what happened:
I rebooted the phone in to recovery wipe everything in order to install a new rom I had just downloaded, after I wiped I try to install from sd card and I got a message saying that the card could not be mounted.
So I plug the phone on the computer turned on the USB-MS toggle, when I click on the sd card on the computer it tells me that the card is not formatted and ask if I want to reformat the card, If I click yes it brings me to the other screen but it tells me that the card is only 30.6mb and the card is 16g? it only gives me to option in the file system FAT or exFAT.
Can somebody help I really don’t want to lose the card
ps i have windows xp and windows 7 , the phone is running miui rom
Where did you get the card?

I believe you will end up formatting SD card (FAT) but if you have anything that you want to keep you can move that to your PC. After you format card and phone recognise and accept it, you can try move your stuff from PC back to SD. Again that just my opinion and I may be wrong... Before anything, try to take card out > start phone > turn phone down > insert card again.

I believe you can do that with older windows (XP), but is it necessary to do it ? FAT was just an example what I give to you. Why don't you format your card with phone using standard system?

sd card

how do I un-partition a sd card? running a rom and was just showing b not telling me how much space i have left or anything. was not even telling me how much internal memory i had on phone.
Reformat it through your computer. You will of course lose all data, so make a backup first.
Edit: If it wont tell you how much internal phone memory you have then the problem may not be the card.

If you're using amonRA v2.3, boot into recovery and select 'partition sdcard'. When prompted, enter 0 for SWAP, 0 for ext2 and the rest of FAT. When the process is complete, you will have one primary partition. NOTE: This procedure will erase EVERYTHING on your SD card so back up its contents BEFORE starting this procedure.

Would tell me how much memory I had before I partitioned the sdcard.

Either format the SD card with your phone/computer to Fat32, or, if you bought a 64GB SD card like some of us, follow the link.

External sd card for cm10-14

Hi there all, is there any ROM out there that supports external sd card.. Am using cm10 - 14 ; I like it very much only problem is I can't use my sd card and am already out of storage.. Thanks

I cant speak for any other ROM as i haven't used any other than AOKP but it works fine for me with my 16GB class 10. I would venture to say it also works on most of the ROM's out there...personally speaking, and i think im probably in the majority here, no external SD would be a deal breaker.
EDIT: According to some (very) quick research its possible it may simply be that your SD card is in a format not readable by CM. Try formatting the SD to FAT32 and see if it works.
Oah thanks.. I will try doing it Nd will surely let you guys know

Move what to the sd exaclty? Also what size card do you have, i've seen somewhere there are detection issues with the larger capacity cards.

So, the external is working now? And you are trying to move something to it? Sorry but you are not elaborating much on what is going on.
Yeah... I wanna moved and save the apps in external sd card.... No, the sd card is not working. How do you save your apps in your sd card when you download something from app store Or like if you want moved it to sd card which is already in internal memory

Well there are several option to move apps to sd. Of course this isn't going to work until you figure out why your sd card isn't being recognized. There is a possibility there could be a problem with your external slot...have you tried any other sd cards?
Are you able to able to save your apps on external sd card...

Now that you mention it i can't..although i really wouldn't want to. Every time i've done it in the past it has causes problems. I'm not sure if this is isolated to AOSP based roms or if it's got to do with the way the external sd is accessed.
i just installed cm10 on my galaxy r and was wondering with the same doubt.
while opening randomly the folders in the root, i found that /emmc is the location of external sd card.. :victory:
