If the theme is specifically made for CM 6.1.1 just install zip from sdcard in recovery, no wipe needed.
EDIT: Remember back up your current rom in case you dont like the theme you can all ways restore the previous rom.
Thanks for your help. Needed that!

Ok so I did that but it tells me installation aborted. I'm not clear on why that happens.

What theme are you trying to download? I had a problem with my phone not downloading the whole theme so it wouldnt install. When you try to flash it, does it say its bad?
Sent from my Pear Phone.
Well theres a fourm about a couple of G2 themes for CM 6.1.1 i believe and i downloaded a theme called "Frost" straight from my phone not my computer. So i booted into recovery and tried flashing the zip of that theme but in a matter of seconds it says "installation aborted"
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
download it from your desktop then and just place the file in your SD card boot into recovery and try it then.
Sent from my Pear phone.
Ok so I tried that. But as every time I flash it via clockwork it still tells me "bad" "installation aborted".

Can you pm me your email so I can send you the theme zip and see if it works.

Yea I sent it

Do themes need to be renamed to update.zip when placed in the Internal SD root directory? I'm reading both ways, and I'm not sure which is correct. I would think just leave named "as is" and find that specifc zip file when in recovery.
So good practice is too select "Backup Current ROM" using the ROM Manager app. If the theme is ugly and you just want stock (or whatever came with your ROM) back.....then go back into ROM Manager and select "Install ROM from SD Card"?
I'd just like to know how to get there and how to get back....just in case.

You do not need to rename the theme.zip to update.zip, make sure the theme .zip was made for the rom you are running, then reboot into recovery, then select "install zip from sd", then select "select zip from sd" once installed go back to main recovery screen and select "reboot system now", thats it .
Yes it is good practice to back up your rom, to revert to a previous back up using rom manager just select "Rom Manager", then select "Manage and restore Backup" , then select the back up you want to restore, and also choose to wipe , thats it rom manager will do the rest.

Kinda noob question but can someone post screens on how to backup and restore a nadroid backup??
Thanks
Title meant to say: Backup not back
If you're not rooted then you can't do a Nandroid. When you use a custom recovery image like Clockwork Mod you have the option to do a backup (refered to as a 'Nandroid').
yea i know i am planning on rooting tonight just want to know how just incase anything goes wrong
Ah right!!
Once you've run unrEVOked it will install Clockwork Mod as your recovery image. In there is the backup and restore menu which is where you perform a 'nandroid'. It basically copies your system onto your SD card so you can revert back to it should a new ROM flash go wrong/not be to your liking...it's easy really!
Getting to Clockwork Mod is the same as getting into normal recovery - turn the phone on whilst holding down the volume down button, select 'Recovery' from the menu and there you go!
Or after getting clockwork mod on your phone you cab download an app called Rom manager this has a menu with options one is back up or restore your Rom.

Thanks, got another question, i would like to flash opendesire how would i now go about doing this ?? i am rooted now
Boot into Clockwork Mod, select 'install update from SD card' and choose to select from the SD card and select the OpenDesire ZIP file. You'll also have flash a radio that's compatible with the ROM (which is done the same way)
do i need to wipe data/factory reset??
Thanks
I'd say yes as you're going from a Sense ROM to non-Sense - better to be safe than sorry
and do i now click apply sdcard:update.zip or install zip from sdcard
Thanks!
Install zip from sdcard.
Highlight and select the zip containing whatever you want to flash (the ROM or the Radio)
I did do this a while back...

WoW!! All done now on OpenDesire Thanks guys When i partition my SD card to ext or whatever, does the cache and stuff go to my SD card automatically?
Thanks
Hey all,
I have a new HTC Evo that I installed Unrevoked 3 root program....no problems installing it.....So I downloaded and installer ROM manager and then ROM manger premium.....no problem there either, backed up the phone and everything seems to be good......tried to add Rom's in zip file from SD card and keep coming up with Abort errors.....clockwork is running fine to my knowledge...
read a few threads and add in Unrevoked forever....Installed with no problems....but I still can't get any Rom's to run properly with the abort errors.....
does the SD card file have to be a certain type of file name???? and thing would be a huge help.....I am pretty sure all the software is working good.......I just can't get this to work.....I have been test it with a few different ROM'S......AND STILL NO LUCK
Thanks in advance..........
i would check to see if the file didnt accidentaly got renamed with double .zip.zip at the end. also make sure there are no spaces in the name, redownload the rom with pc not rom manager, put it in the root of sd card, go into recovery manuallly, wipe and try to flash
so root of the SD card meaning not in another file.....just drag it over to the card itself in its own file??? I downloaded the ROM originally from this website....a few different ones and no luck....
yes all you do download then drag and drop to the sd card not inside any folder, do the wipes(if using clockwork recovery wipe data, cache and the go to advance and wipe dalvik cache also) then go to flash zip from sd card, look for your zip and select it wait then reboot, first time will take a while 5 to 10 minutes is reasonable, then once booted let it settle for a couple of minutes, go thru the setup process and reboot again to finish settling everything. make sure you have a full battery in case you run into any issues you dont want your phone dying while flashing anything
Do yourself a favor and get Amon Ra recovery and stop using ROM Manager.
Get amon RA 2.3 recovery and then start flashing roms via recovery instead of rom manager. To get to recovery u can one...power off phone and hold down volume down button and press power, two...after installing a custom rom and then hold power down and select reboot alot of the roms have the option to reboot into recovery, or three...download quickboot from market and use that to reboot into recovery. Once there u can wipe parts of ur phone and also flash roms and mods and u can put the roms or mods anywhere on ur SD card. Also don't forget to make a new nandroid and a single nandroid of ur wimax keys
Ok,
So I installed amon RA 2.3 recovery ....everything went fine, Now my screens are green instead of the orange like they were....my super user icon went from ninja to skull and crossbones....and I also downloaded quickboot from the market................ and made a nandroid backup
So I went in to recovery, selected the option for zip on SD card, selected file and looks like it went with no errors.....rebooted my phone and nothing.....the rom was for a green clock app......the phone just looks stock trim

Those mods can be tricky. Open the modded zip up on ur computer and see the name of the app. U can do the same thing with ur phone if u dl astro or file exployer or root exployer from the market. Go to system then apps and find that app and delete it. The try reflashing the mod via recovery. Uve done everything right its just some apps don't change for some reason
Also don't forget to wipe dalvik cache and cache before and after flashing something
The other thing is that some user made mods use the original framework.res which will change the way your phone is themed or how it "looks"
Golden rules:
1. Always do a nandroid backup before making big changes to your device.
2. Always wipe cache & dalvik manually from within recovery BEFORE flashing any mods.
3. Make sure the mod you are flashing is designed to be used with the particular rom you have installed. All mods are NOT compatible with all roms.
4. If you've screwed up and had not made a nandroid backup before screwing up, go into recovery, wipe EVERYTHING in the wipe menu EXCEPT the SD card and start over.

Hi.. I'm new here and I think this is the place to ask this.. I want to use ARHD but i have a stock rom.. I already upgrade into GB. is it possible to convert it into ARHD? using the method.....
-Download ROM and place it on your SD card
-Download "Super Wipe" script & place it on your SD card (optionally if coming from earlier version of my ROM, obligatory if coming from stock or other custom ROM)
-Boot your phone in recovery mode (vol down + power)
-In main menu, select "install zip from sdcard"
-Select "choose zip from sdcard" and browse to the location of "Super Wipe" script
-Once again select "choose zip from sdcard" and browse to the location of Android Revolution ROM
-After flashing process is complete, reboot the device
Or is there other method to do first before doing this... Thanks..
Best regards,

Hi Chiefs!
I am a newbie to rooting, planting, flashing etc etc however, to avoid frustrations from your end here are some of the first things that i have done.
I have read through the below links:
[cant post urls but its basically guides to rooting desire from xda forums]
I am using a Desire from Starhub in Singapore. I have recently upgraded to gingerbread 2.3.3 after which i realized that I should have not done that but anyway, now that it is done, I am now:
Revolutionary Now it is (Alpharev unlock)
BRAVO PVT1 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-6.93.1002
MICROP-031d
TOUCH PANEL-SYNT0101
RADIO-5.17.05.23
Aug 10 2010, 17.72.18
I believe i should be able to install ICS now but when i download the ICS and rename as PB99IMG.ZIP and install it unzips and after parsing returns back to the hboot menu.
I must say confess that I may not have rooted correctly, because when i try and ls files in directories like cache, root or command I get permission errors.
Some help would be really appreciated, its just the sheer kick of being able to do it that drives me to post here.
You have to flash the zip-file from Recovery.
Check Tutorial(s) in Development-Section.

I tried that too sir .. but from recovery when I select the 'Apply update from SD card' it does not work, there is just a standard message 'rebooting with reason code' and something like 'unable to open /cache/command/...' and it reboots

nandroid backup first:
backup and restore -> backup
then full wipe:
wipe data/factory reset
then flash ROM:
install zip from sd card --> choose zip from sd card
(choose the correct ROM.zip)
'apply update from SD card' is something else.
First you have to partition your SD card. Go in the Recovery to 'advanced' and then 'partition sd card'. Choose 1GB EXT4 and 128MB SWAP... (all your files on the SD card will be deleted... maybe you have to secure them first). Then put the File with an SD card adapter on the sd (if you have one... if you don't have one and youre unable to boot complietly into the system, try without partitioning). When the file is on your sd boot into recovery...You have To choose 'install zip from sd-card' Or something like that... Then navigate To the folder where the ICS file is. Choose The file and here you are!!!

good point, though check each ROMs requirement if an ext partition is required. most will indicate a recommended size depends on how many apps you need, but most do not require a swap partition.
it's also better to use gparted to partition:
- backup your sd card first to PC,
- partition using gparted (search for a guide here somewhere)
- copy contents back to sd card, including ROM.zip
- nandroid backup, full wipe and install as above.
OK, looking at your help below i think i am sure that is something missing, and i definitely need help to figure that out ..
Firstly in recovery mode i dont get 'install zip from sd card' option.
I tried a full wipe and wipe data/factory reset, the zip stops at the same plc
BTW some other symptoms that gives me a feeling that i have not rooted completely or properly:
i installed SuperSU from chainfire and when i try to open it it says
There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannotinstall it. This is the problem.
ROM Toolbox pro also says the same thing, 'failed to obtain root access'
ROM Manager also says that the superuser was not found at /system/bin/su or /system/xbin/su
i am using a windows xp laptop to do all the circus. If it is of any help, chiefs dont have to worry about backup and / or bricking my phone

are you sure you can't see 'install zip from sd card'??? it's the 3rd/4th option down in the main menu when you first boot into recovery. how are you even installing the zip when you say it stops at the same place?

you probably didn't/haven't read all of the documentation, you need to flash superuser.zip. (flash the zip the same way as instructed above).
this however only roots your existing stock rom. you only need to do this if you want to backup apps and data (using something like Titanium Backup), and want to transfer them to a new rom.
whichever rom you end up using, DO NOT use ROM manager, it has been known to cause many problems with this phone, you don't need it.
check the rom thread if it requires an sd partition (most do), and set it up before installing the rom like i said above. also have a look at step 5 here
eddiehk6, you are right, I had never been to the this link for revolutionary ROM, i downloaded it from else where. After installing the correct this I understand what it means to have a 'different' recovery from the standard one that comes with the phone.
Most of the stuff went well after that including the installation of the latest ROM from sandvoid.
The problem is that after I restarted the phone after completing the installation, I see this "blue sparks flying from both sides of my screen to the center" splash, its been 10 minutes and how long should i let this go? Did i brick my phone? Argh! So close ...
ostyme electric
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! WOOT WOOT!
I just took out the battery and put it back and restarted to recovery mode, wiped dalvik cache and cache, (As usual super hasty and never RTFM) again!
Thank you all!
Time to spread the love of ICS!
Erm .. question ..
Where is my HTC Sync? I do see a process in there, but i see no option as to where i could "Sync calendar & Contacts", i upgraded my ROM from sandvoid 0.7

htc sync will only work with sense roms. i don't know what process you're seeing.
this is why we have gmail to sync contacts and calendar.
i know you're excited to have ICS, but remember it's still a beta rom, so there will be some issues as it's still being developed. you may not be able to post there yet, but you can still read the thread.
reading back i think you need to slow down a little. the key is reading, learning, understanding...before you do anything.
and google is your best friend , you can try it now to find out how to sync your contacts / calendar to gmail

i am using cynogenmod-7.1.0-rc1-buzz,kernel version 2.6.35.13-nfinity,clockwork recovery v5.0.2.0. so can u suggest me a better version and stable one and a better one pls
The latest update (which from feedback from other users is quite stable and fast) is CM 7.2.0 RC3.
You can get it from here: http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?type=RC&device=buzz
When updating you don't need to wipe data, but if anything is "funky" you'll have to wipe it.

Yep, rc3 is your best choice.
However if you have made any system changes i.e removed any system apps you will lose your system changes etc etc.
If your using custom mtds remember to flash the boot file after rom.

To backup your ROM:
IN CWM Recovery select Backup& Restore
Select Backup
Go for a cup of coffee as this will take a good 5-10 minutes.
Update:
In CWM Recovery select install zip from SD card.
Select Choose zip from SD card
Find the zip file you put on earlier and select it
Select yes
Wait 4-5 miunutes
You're done, and now just reboot the phone.
