So when the flipside gets 2.2 OTA whenever it does.. - Flipside Android Development

Should I restore default apps (Like AT&T Navigator, AT&T Maps, etc) and unroot, or can we just apply OTA straight off without breaking anything?
Reason I'm wondering about this now is because I heard some of the other ATT phones are getting 2.2 released today (the 12th), some others in Canada are getting it as of last week already.

Motorola publishes their estimated upgrade dates here. The Flipside is not even listed as being in progress.
There is a stock rom available here that you can flash with RSD Lite to return your phone to stock.

Frustrating... I hope we start to get better support for Android phones on AT&T now that Verizon has the iPhone. I feel like Android on AT&T has been intentionally nerfed so as not to compete with iPhone very much.

It's even more frustrating knowing that Motorola created a device with the hardware spec to support 2.2 things like flash 10.1... And then sold the devices on 2.1 without plans of any kind of OTA update to froyo.

My wife's flipside got notification of update to 2.2.1 (iirc, 2.2 for sure), but she skipped it
At least I/we know an OTA to Froyo is now gonna happen.

EVO 4G and Android 2.2 "Froyo"

Only a few days are left till EVO 4G will be on market. It will have Android 2.1.
I was wondering if it will get an upgrade to 2.2 "Froyo", since Google offisially released it! Or even Android 3.0 "Gingerbread" when will be out, in the end of 2010?

There have been posts about this. Nobody knows for sure. HTC did say that most of the phones released this year will get 2.2 by the end of the year. They might skip it for Gingerbread (2.5, btw) but nobody knows yet. No worries though. I'm sure when we root this thing we will get AOSP 2.2 installed in no time.
I'm just as excited as you are.

Not to be a spoilsport here, but I still prefer HTC HD2 cause it has physical buttons. Those touch sensitive ones have proven to be a bit awkward on the Nexus One already. But this phone's good.
Yeah according to Google/HTC (I'm not sure), but there's an article that says that almost all phones release in 2010 will get the 2.2 update. Not sure about the 3.0 one though, I think it's too early
And I'm just as excited about the Evo as all of you are.
Well semi good news. Froyo is on the Nexus One officially now. So once we root this puppy we can make a N1 rom for our Evo and bam! Instant parfait goodness. That said, I don't think we will root it before Google deposits the 2.2 code in the AOSP repositories so if that happens we can just cook up our own AOSP rom. Even so, this is a good backup plan.

I think that you are being way too confident. The 4G radio in this handset is going to present some interesting (and serious) challenges as far as just adapting AOSP or other ROMs (such as those for the GSM Nexus One) is concerned.

Definitely not a stranger to this notion. Before I got my evo I had a hero which had the same issues. I'm just hoping wecan find a way to better work around it.
Would this help?
Froyo is already said to have wimax support natively. As for cdma support as of 1.6 its supported natively. I don't see any reason we wont have radio support in Froyo. Its all there already. Or will be once its released. I have no worries about a upgrade to froyo. All we need is root and the rest is history

So basically HTC has patched in support for a new type of radio in a previous version of the firmware that doesn't support it natively, and you're using this as evidence that the situation will be different than it was with the Hero?
If you'll recall, 1.5 lacked the native CDMA support that arrived in 1.6. HTC patched it in and then abandoned the handset for seven months.
History is not on your side.

All the more reason to determine how we can update both the Kernel and the OS files independently.
Doesn't Froyo SDK include WiMAX support?

I'm completely new to posting in these forums (1st post), but have followed for quite a while.
In response to the above, I want to point out that keishou posted a link to the EVO 4G Developer's Guide which clearly states that the Froyo SDK will contain WiMAX support. Under section 2. 4G-WiMax Network, it says...
// you are on Sprint's 4G network
// ConnectivityManager.Type_WIMAX=6 will be included in Froyo SDK
// Until Type_WIMAX is supported
// you will need to hard-code the value 6
Doesn't this mean that we won't have to worry about WiMAX when flashing Froyo onto the EVO?

They didn't "abandon" the headset. There was a software release in between launch and 2.1. Not to mention that 2.1 was only out for 5 months before the Hero got the update. 1 bug fixing update and 1 major release in 7 months? Seems about average for the industry.
Look at the Treo 800w and Treo Pro. They never got an update, and probably never will. That's being abanonded.

it doesnt matter if HTC is gonna give us a update really man. we can do a much better job then them. as for HTC abandoning the hero i dont think that was the case. if a handset manufacturer updated the OS on every phone every time Google did they would be ****ing their selves. i think HTC did a ok job of releasing 2.1 for the hero. i mean really we couldve got 1.6, 2.0 or 2.0.1 but all those platforms were short lived. the fact is they have to build binaries to support major platform shifts and it just so happens that 1.5/the hero got caught in that groove. plus on top of it the hero is old news. it has a old ARCH that doesnt support most of the 2.+ APIs. hero doesnt support opengl 2.0 and never will. in a since 2.1 on the hero was kinda pointless. the only way we can get some of the 2.1 goodies is through hacking to get it, leaving the builds unstable and slightly buggy. of course us the tweakers dont care but the users who just buy the phone and wait for official updates do care about that. i mean also official 2.1 hasnt been out all that long either and the hero got it. will the evo see an update? im sure it will. there is no reason it shouldnt.
All of us that will be migrating from the Hero to the Evo have faith in you and the rest of the devs here Toast. You all worked wonders with the Hero and with more capable hardware I am sure you will blow us all away in due time.

Totally agree with ya on that, but dammit they better bring Darch with them
Seeing as the EVO is one of HTC's flagship devices I can't see it not getting at least two upgrades. For what its worth, based on the fact that the droid is getting 2.2 soon it appears that either google has started to talk to manufacturers better or this upgrade may simply be easier to roll out (of course the droid is vanilla 2.2, but considering how long 2.1 took it's still good news)
Based on the Evo's specs I can't imagine not getting updates until at least (Mind you I'm picking a random number with no basis) Android 4.0 or something. While HTC is slow with updates, that's what XDA is for
Yeah the only froyo you will get is a port from a dev on here. I heard the EVO will not get the official 2.2 for up to three months. Knowing sprint, much longer than that.
2.2 is coming to EVO
http://www.cooltechzone.com/2010/05/25/htc-confirms-htc-evo-4g-android-2-2-froyo-update/ i hope this help guys...i can't wait to get mines on the 4th....

2.2 froyo on evo ota

Any word on a ota for Evo if its coming anytime soon I've searched a lot got no answers please, any help
OTA hasn't even officially come out for the Nexus One. HTC has to port their sense on to it. Best guess is its going to be a few months.
I WISH froyo was coming to the evo in an official update, but that wont happen for months. We will need to rely on XDA to put together a rom for us to use on our rooted phones if we want it sooner.
As others have said, we will never get it before the Nexus does. And a few months? Count on six. At least. And when/if HTC ever gets it to us, it will almost definitely be OTW.
Sprint felt pretty stupid about how long the Hero took, and the Evo is their and HTC's flagship device. I bet we will see it sooner then we did on the Hero, but it will still be a while.
the phone is not even 4 days old and we already have threads about when is the next android OS update?
Can we make a subforum dedicated to just froyo 2.2 rumors, customer service whispers, sprint tech info, leaked documents, tweets, theories and every other worthless bit information and crying users about when its coming that crippled the Hero forums for months so it doesn't waste anyone's time when trying to talk about something that is relevant?

I don't think anyone here can give a concrete timeline as to when the Evo will get froyo. While I do miss a few things in froyo. I'd much rather see NAND unlocked first.

I agree somewhat. But to be fair, this is Sprint's flagship device. They should be doing everything they can to get 2.2 on it as quick as possible. The ball is in Sprint's court if they want to be known as a top carrier in terms of cutting edge. Yes we have the only 4G phone, but to be the 2nd carrier (under T-Mo of course) to have a 2.2 device would strengthen their standings and possibly allow them to acquire more customers that are downtrodden from At&t.

I Agree with you they need to work hard which I believe upgrading from 2.1 to 2.2 is something doable within 2 weeks again that my guess , they can make their customers happy also iphone 4 is on its way .. give them some hard times
Honestly customers will come to Sprint only they work hard this is soo true currently Ball is in their court do not let it go .. get a news release up asap with 2.2 rolling out date . If I would be Sprint I would do the Press Release for 2.2 Fryo the same Day when Apple was announcing iphone 4.

Going for Gold Campaign (2.3 instead of 2.2)

As you might have already read over the internet LG was behind the rumour that minimum hardware spec for Android 2.3 a.k.a Gingerbread is 1GHz. I just read that LG pulls back the claim and considering updating their mobiles to Android 2.3.
This is a good time for us Motorola Defy owners to kindly request Motorola to reconsider their decision and give us Android 2.3 instead in 2011.
I'm sure Motorola people are monitoring this board so let them hear us loud and clear if you would also like your next Defy's release update to be Android 2.3. What do you think?
Thank you.

Hehehe, yeah. Probably true.
Not Motorola's Fault
I would like to point out a rather complex issues in regards of what version of OS the phone gets released with, as well as the future upgrades. Motorola started development of the Defy long before Android 2.2 was released. And my guess when T-Mobile signed off on the phone it was tested by Motorola as well as T-Mobile with Android 2.1 only. From the product delivery point of view the fact that 2.2 came out while Defy was going through T-Mobile test cycle is irrelevant. Neither T-Mobile nor Motorola would've stopped the testing and go back to square one to change the OS to the latest and greatest version. Anybody who says otherwise has no clue on the way the product deliverable works.
Other point is that Motorola already may have a 2.2 or even 2.3 done for Defy but it has to go through the carrier's internal SI&T and QA process and get approved by T-Mobile. And if T-Mobile does not want to get Defy upgraded to 2.2 -- well guess what? No one will see the 2.2 running on Defy officially. Motorola cannot go over T-Mobile's head and release 2.2 to Defy customers without compromising the business relationship with the carrier.
Just my $0.02.
It would be incredible for now to develop a retail firmware wt Froyo. The 2.3 still a dream LOL
Seems like a no-brainer to us - but apparently manufacturers have zero interest in supporting their devices after managing to con people into buying them.
If it weren't for the Defy being so cheap, and ruggedized, I'd have bought an HTC without looking twice.

You buy the device with a particular version of Android, the manufacturer doesn't have to give any upgrades, if they do its purely a bonus to the owner. IMO never buy a phone on the hope that it might get upgraded, and don't believe any dates published on the internet about when an upgrade is going to come - even if its from "official" sources.

I agree with you 100%. However, providing Motorola can fix the speaker phone issue soon enough then Defy would become their best selling handset. Over seventy pages of forum posts (by Germans) shows the level of demands for Defy.
I'm also sure Defy would eventually be their best new selling unlocked handset as well and I hope then Motorola cease the opportunity to do something good. Those with unlocked version of Defy are not at the mercy of any carriers.
Please people, as much as you like Motorola's Defy they also like your money too otherwise how Motorola can pay its directors crazy salaries? We can always encourage Motorola to do something good for us rather than acting as spokesperson of Motorola that nothing good will ever come out of Motorola in relation to its customers. First for everything! : )

A potential good news out of a bad news

According to this BBC article published today (17 May 2011) all android version with the exception of 2.3.4 version can expose personal data during the identification (Edit: Authentication) process with google services. A bad news ineed.
The good news, though, is that if this problem is publicised enough then it will force companies like Motorola to provide up-to-date version of android for their handsets. Of course not all old handsets can be upgraded but we all know Defy is very capable phone in terms of Android 2.3.4.
I'm still waiting for Froyo 2.2 upgrade, in the UK, and so furious with Motorola over this. Anyways, that matter is for another post.
yeah, tell me about it. I bought the phone from tmobile on date of launch... was told q1, then q2, now end of year... ahhh LOL
This doesn't mean anything. If the flaw is really critical, then I guess Google just release a patch for the module that's responsible for authentication - they won't force all carriers to update the whole system. Instead only some small fix may be pushed to affected devices.
Google announced today they will fix the problem on server-side.
Don't get it really, if plain text was sent out to google servers how the problem could be fixed on server-side? Also if no fix is necessary on the client side then why Android 2.3.4 was modified to encrypt data before sending it to the google?
Maybe this is me not understanding what the problem was. I found it difficult to imagine google would lie about the fix solution.

I really like (previously loved it) my Defy but can't understand why I have purchased a product about six months ago that I couldn't use many features that I wanted from day one. Many apps (email in particular) work properly from 2.2 and above.
I will only buy another phone from Motorola if it had the latest Android installed on it. I don't believe they are shipping Atrix with 2.2. Motorola will have the same attitude towards Atrix upgrade too.

Guesses On An Official ICS Release Date?

So now that the official ICS leak has been out for a little while now, anybody want to take a guess as to when we'll get an actual, true official update for our phones (AT&T and Rogers both)?
I'm especially curious now that the Galaxy Tab 8.9 received it's update just today, and in all honesty, I'm sure many have forgotten about said tablet. If that tablet has the update now, our phones shouldn't be far behind no?
Sure I could root, etc. and get the leak onto my phone, but unfortunately, I have to use my phone for work via Good for Enterprise which detects root...not fun. It's supposedly possible to trick the app by doing some file manipulation (renaming su and such), but on a daily basis that becomes too much of a pain especially since I can be on call many nights.
So any thoughts? My guess: early September...only because of the fact the Galaxy Tab 8.9 just got the update today and IFA is today as well and they could potentially announce more dates for ICS updates.
I don't think Rogers gives a rat's behind on the glide. At launch it was $149 on a 3 yr, then two weeks later it was 0.99 on a 3 year where it has stayed since. Not sure it they still have it online.
I don't think they will release the ICS update for it.

Go ahead and root it. You can install all you want and then use the app 'hide my root' to hide the root and get your office mail working. For me this works with Airwatch and good for enterprise should also get tricked. Give it a try anyway or restore your nandroid backup if it doesn't work.

I wouldn't be surprised if Samsung's recent loss against Apple will push back an official release even though we have a near complete leaked ROM. Samsung now has to release more stock-like ROMs to a lot of devices all at once, which is a big job for any company. The Glide gets very little love as it is so it might be a while. Hope I'm wrong.

I hope you're wrong too; however, Samsung is appealing the ruling and had a counter-suit already pending (which may have been updated since this verdict). So I don't expect things to change right away either. Expect the bickering to continue for a while, with a possible slight hit to consumers on the Android side of things.
I just don't expect an ICS update be delayed because of this. Heck, Samsung just announced the Galaxy Note II, Galaxy Camera, etc. at IFA so clearly at this stage, it's business as usual for the most part.
I think its up to att to release it now...?

Until their appeal goes to court, does that mean they can't push anything that was deemed patent-infringing? I think most of the stuff in the case was related to TouchWiz (out of like 100+ patents disputed though). Say the case never happened and we were supposed to get an ICS release this week, are they legally not allowed to release it now until they either change it or win an appeal?

Sure I could root, etc. and get the leak onto my phone, but unfortunately, I have to use my phone for work via Good for Enterprise which detects root...not fun. It's supposedly possible to trick the app by doing some file manipulation (renaming su and such), but on a daily basis that becomes too much of a pain especially since I can be on call many nights.

The ICS leak doesn't require root at all, just boot into download mode and run the .exe from your PC. It installs the AT&t unrooted ICS, which shouldn't give you any problems with your work.
On top of that, you can flash CWM Recovery and remove any bloatware in recovery, while keeping your actual rom unrooted and safe for work usage.
Regarding the law suits:
Apple wants eight Samsung smartphones banned.
They are the Galaxy S 4G, Galaxy S2 AT&T model, Galaxy S2 Skyrocket, Galaxy S2 T-Mobile model, Galaxy S2 Epic 4G, Galaxy S Showcase, Droid Charge and Galaxy Prevail.

It doesn't mention the Glide specifically, so that's good. But things could still be pushed back a little. I'm guessing a September release. Samsung has everything to gain by creating more brand-value, and one way to do so is sticking to its promises.

What I find funny is the fact that the Galaxy Precedent from straight talk is exactly the same as the Galaxy Prevail just different carriers. So why isn't the Precedent on that ban list? Apple is just going to court over everything now. It doesn't make any sense. (Had to delete your link due to me not having 10 posts.)

new firmware update the precursor to ICS?
Today I went through the daily ritual of checking the Samsung Kies program for an ICS update and there was a firmware update listed for my Captivate Glide! I can't tell what it is but if it's not ICS could it be the update that comes right before ICS?
This is what is listed in Kies: New update - PDA:LH2 / Phone:LH2 / CSC:LH2 (ATT)
If anyone knows what this is please let me know and do you know if it relates to the long-awaited ICS update?
Thanks
Scidoc
