So now that the official ICS leak has been out for a little while now, anybody want to take a guess as to when we'll get an actual, true official update for our phones (AT&T and Rogers both)?
I'm especially curious now that the Galaxy Tab 8.9 received it's update just today, and in all honesty, I'm sure many have forgotten about said tablet. If that tablet has the update now, our phones shouldn't be far behind no?
Sure I could root, etc. and get the leak onto my phone, but unfortunately, I have to use my phone for work via Good for Enterprise which detects root...not fun. It's supposedly possible to trick the app by doing some file manipulation (renaming su and such), but on a daily basis that becomes too much of a pain especially since I can be on call many nights.
So any thoughts? My guess: early September...only because of the fact the Galaxy Tab 8.9 just got the update today and IFA is today as well and they could potentially announce more dates for ICS updates.
I don't think Rogers gives a rat's behind on the glide. At launch it was $149 on a 3 yr, then two weeks later it was 0.99 on a 3 year where it has stayed since. Not sure it they still have it online.
I don't think they will release the ICS update for it.

Go ahead and root it. You can install all you want and then use the app 'hide my root' to hide the root and get your office mail working. For me this works with Airwatch and good for enterprise should also get tricked. Give it a try anyway or restore your nandroid backup if it doesn't work.

I wouldn't be surprised if Samsung's recent loss against Apple will push back an official release even though we have a near complete leaked ROM. Samsung now has to release more stock-like ROMs to a lot of devices all at once, which is a big job for any company. The Glide gets very little love as it is so it might be a while. Hope I'm wrong.

I hope you're wrong too; however, Samsung is appealing the ruling and had a counter-suit already pending (which may have been updated since this verdict). So I don't expect things to change right away either. Expect the bickering to continue for a while, with a possible slight hit to consumers on the Android side of things.
I just don't expect an ICS update be delayed because of this. Heck, Samsung just announced the Galaxy Note II, Galaxy Camera, etc. at IFA so clearly at this stage, it's business as usual for the most part.
I think its up to att to release it now...?

Until their appeal goes to court, does that mean they can't push anything that was deemed patent-infringing? I think most of the stuff in the case was related to TouchWiz (out of like 100+ patents disputed though). Say the case never happened and we were supposed to get an ICS release this week, are they legally not allowed to release it now until they either change it or win an appeal?

The ICS leak doesn't require root at all, just boot into download mode and run the .exe from your PC. It installs the AT&t unrooted ICS, which shouldn't give you any problems with your work.
On top of that, you can flash CWM Recovery and remove any bloatware in recovery, while keeping your actual rom unrooted and safe for work usage.
Regarding the law suits:
Apple wants eight Samsung smartphones banned.
They are the Galaxy S 4G, Galaxy S2 AT&T model, Galaxy S2 Skyrocket, Galaxy S2 T-Mobile model, Galaxy S2 Epic 4G, Galaxy S Showcase, Droid Charge and Galaxy Prevail.

It doesn't mention the Glide specifically, so that's good. But things could still be pushed back a little. I'm guessing a September release. Samsung has everything to gain by creating more brand-value, and one way to do so is sticking to its promises.

What I find funny is the fact that the Galaxy Precedent from straight talk is exactly the same as the Galaxy Prevail just different carriers. So why isn't the Precedent on that ban list? Apple is just going to court over everything now. It doesn't make any sense. (Had to delete your link due to me not having 10 posts.)

new firmware update the precursor to ICS?
Today I went through the daily ritual of checking the Samsung Kies program for an ICS update and there was a firmware update listed for my Captivate Glide! I can't tell what it is but if it's not ICS could it be the update that comes right before ICS?
This is what is listed in Kies: New update - PDA:LH2 / Phone:LH2 / CSC:LH2 (ATT)
If anyone knows what this is please let me know and do you know if it relates to the long-awaited ICS update?
Thanks

If you're disappointed with your yakjuux (Bell/Virgin) version, why not install the official Google yakju version? There are a few threads about how to do that if you decide you want to.
I am a noob when it comes to this stuff, how hard would it be to do?

Download the factory image from the following link, making sure to pick a GSM build: code.google.com/android/nexus/images.html
Extract the zip file to where your fastboot is located. There are 3 files you'll need, the bootloader, the radio and the image.
Then use the following fastboot commands to apply the updates, please note the name of the file depends on which one you choose to use.
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-maguro-primekj10.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot flash radio radio-maguro-i9250xxkk1.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot -w update image-yakju-itl41f.zip
And then you're on the Google build. Hope that helped.

What drugs are you on?
For its most recent models, Samsung has had an amazing trackrecord when it comes to updates.
I had my SGS1 for around 18 months. It got 6 official updates, spanning 3 major OS revisions. That's one new update every 3rd month and every major Android-update bar ICS.
Absoutely amazing.
The corresponding US carrier-phone models (Fascinate, Vibrant, Captivate, Shingeroo etc) did not get the updates because the US carriers blocked them.
Morale: Don't buy US carrier's ****ed up and locked down carrier-phones variants of good phones available in an international edition not tied to a carrier interested in locking it down. The international version is a different and better product. Always.
Plus it doesn't have carriers blocking your updates.
Besides, this Galaxy Nexus can be made into a true "Google" phone with a few lines of fastboot. I know, because I went ahead and did that.
It's not really an issue at all.
Edit: To answer your actual question (sorry!), I think so far Google is indeed guilty of not having provided an explanation for this. Seemingly though, they've done stuff like this with different build numbers in the past.
Also Samsung say they have custom builds (or at least custom so far) to allow for required regional customizations with regard to localization and things not in stock ICS yet.
We'll see how it pans out.

That's great for you guys in Europe but the OP is using Bell Mobility, which is in Canada. We received a grand total of TWO updates, 2.2 (not 2.2.x, and not counting the first failed version of 2.2) and 2.3.3. The first update was timely, but created no end of problems for users in the form of fried internal SD cards and corrupted external SD. It was several months before a new build of 2.2 was offered (still not 2.2.x). Gingerbread was offered last August, a stable but still buggy 2.3.3.
Our Galaxy S more closely resembled the "World" phone with some minor changes, designated GT-I9000M. To obtain a true "World" phone for use in Canada would cause numerous hassles, in buying the phone, warranty, and configuring the Modem to work in Canada.
Some users rooted their 9000M phones to use international builds of Android to keep up with Google's updates but again, most had a lot of frustration. Anyone who roots their phone and installs the latest build of something in effect becomes a beta tester. That's fine for some users but some of us wish to remain stock.
It's interesting how each of Samsung's corporate HQ's made different decisions on when to roll out updates, and even withold them entirely. E.g. Scandinavian countries seemed to get updates months ahead of North America, who sometimes didn't get updates at all
I just picked up a Galaxy S Glide (Roger's version of the Captivate Glide) today, and the Sales Rep. insisted that the phone was going to get ICS. I'm just wondering if anyone knows if anything 'official' has been said on the subject?
Or, worst case, I've rooted it already (and installed the 1.2ghz oc'd kernel), so is anyone working on a custom ICS ROM?
Thanks!

Samsung, like Moto and a few ithers, has already broken their Google Alliance agreement to keep recent phones updated, and the Glide was conspicuously absent from their list of phones confirmed to be getting updates. Engadget updates a list of phones getting ICS. Check it out here: http://www.engadget.com/updates/which-devices-will-get-ice-cream-sandwich/
The sales Rep, like most phone sales reps (in my experience) completely lied to your face. That doesn't mean it's not coming, but it means Samsung is being non-committal and the outcome is likely going to depend on how successful the Glide is.
As for homebrew, it bears mentioning that, unlike going from Eclair to Froyo, or Froyo to Gingerbread, ICS represents a major change in the Android framework, such that it breaks compatibility with old drivers, and it requires a lot more low-level work to update. This is why you see manufacturers being comparatively stingy with updates this time. While a homebrew ROM is not an impossibility, it's going to be more difficult than usual, and there's a much greater chance that certain things won't work because of the lack of available drivers.
I'll be honest, I really wanted a Glide. I love hard keyboards and it seemed like the best slider on the market. But I got a Galaxy S II Skyrocket instead, specifically because of the Ice Cream Sandwich issue. It's really kind of a bad time to be buying an Android phone because so many are going to get left behind, and it's such a massive, important upgrade.

Right, which means it's likely going to depend on a few factors that are yet unclear, like how well the phone sells and whether or not carriers want to pay for the update. (AT&T is the WORST when it comes to updates though, so I'm hoping Rogers pulls their weight here).
It's a big question mark right now. The hardware is more than up to the task, and it really should get it, but Samsung and AT&T are both pretty bummy in this department and I wouldn't take anything for granted.
Like I said, if I thought it was a lock, I'd be a Glide owner right now. I really miss that keyboard, it's a great little phone.

I was using AnTuTu benchmarking.. and found this entry..
Looks like someone is working with Android 4.0.3 with an OC'd Glide

I don't necessarily believe he lied, at least deliberately.
When my wife and I went to look at it in a local store, they didn't carry it there. However one of the sales reps actually owned it, and let us look at his. I explicitly asked him if it was upgradeable to ICS, and he said yes.
I see no reason for him to lie, knowing ahead of time he's not getting a sale from us on that phone.
EDIT: However that doesn't mean Samsung won't just say no anyway. However since this is a brand new device, I'd say no news is good news. Especially since they never explicitly said it wasn't going to be released.

Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch ICS update leaked
26 April 2012 by Michael Crider ]
Ah, there hasn’t been enough news lately about the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch lately – my fingers were just starting to recover. An enterprising XDA user named “sfhub” has posted what seems to be an official Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Now Network phone, compatible only with the specific version of the device. The leak comes after various international versions of the Galaxy S II have been updated, not to mention leaks for AT&T’s Galaxy S II and Galaxy S II Skyrocket.
The update comes in the form of a one-click Odin desktop install, so you’ll need a PC in order to apply it. The XDA poster has kindle pre-modded the software to grant root (which pretty much anyone who installs a leak will want anyway) and offers it in a “clean” version that wipes your current ROM or an upgrade version that keeps your user data intact. The latter may cause problems with some apps, so for a worry free experience I’d recommend a clean flash.
Early user reports are positive; the software seems nearly complete. No major issues with the core Android and TouchWiz experience have been noted by flashers, though the update process is confusing if you’ve never used Odin before. If you’ve already rooted, remember to make a Nandroid backup. There’s still no word on when the OTA update will arrive.

Samsung is not innocent. Blame them also. Samsung can easily say no to the major carriers and push the update to us through kies. We will not get the update until 30-60 days after the next flagship device from att. All of the iphone update come directly from apple. The carriers have no say.

Ditto. Another post that was moved to the Q&A section mentioned that there are already three AT&T leaks in existence. AT&T is probably too busy ensuring that their bloatware is compatible with the ROMs, I mean, testing them.
I honestly don't understand how Samsung, the biggest mobile phone producer in the world, allows carriers to call the shots. As you've mentioned, Apple doesn't allow the carriers to have any input in OS updates. Samsung has just as much clout - what's stopping them from doing the same?

All Samsung cares about is profit margins. Where as Apple is also really strict with what goes into their phones. Flame away, but that's the truth.

And I suppose Apple doesn't care about profit margins?
In all honesty, I can't say I disagree. Apple pretty much gave the carriers the finger by strictly controlling what's included in the updates and their release timeline. My biggest frustration with Android is the complete lack of uniformity when it comes to keeping it up to date. With that being said, I would sooner switch to Windows than iOS.
With regards to custom ROMs....not really my thing anymore. There is always something that doesn't function properly, which is why I'd rather have the official release. I used to be a flashaholic when I had the Vibrant and the MT4G, even the Sensation (to some extent). Nowadays, I tend to favor the official releases, even if it's a leak.

Wut? Samsung has slimmer margins than Apple does. By a LONG shot.
Also, Apple doesn't let carriers control updates, but the carriers do significantly control what is going in to each update (primarily in terms of what features are enabled for use when). They still don't have a gold paved road.
That being said, I do wish Samsung would force the carriers to a better update schedule. I wouldn't care if it was consistently a month after the international version. That would be better than what we have now.

I kinda agree as I did the same with my S1 i9000 : flashed ROMs and kernels onto it on a weekly basis for nearly 1½ year.
Now that I have my S3, I just don't feel like that anymore as I :
- Appreciate the quality and stability of Samsung's releases
- Enjoy using the best camera app there is
- Know that the phone will eventually be updated to an even better release
However, the day I'll be told by Samsung that my S3 will no longer be elligible to upgrades, just watch me go back to my custom ROMs flashing habits! héhéhé
As for the bloatware ... root and any decent file explorer can help you get rid of it!
I thought most people knew by now that only Official Google devices get (somewhat) prompt updates. I didn't buy my SIII based on what it was going to get, I bought it based on what it already had. IMO as long as they update the phone in a relatively timely manner (within 6 months I'd say) then I am content - even then I wouldn't be too upset. I would just flash something myself.
I do the same. Take official firmware and basically make my own custom rom.
That way I have control about what is and isnt done.
I root it..
remove bloatware myself with root explorer (after copying everything I am about to remove to my external sd for safe keeping)
keep copies of the build.prop, framework-res systemui etc.
I modify the systemui for my own icons etc.
Install other modes etc.
As for leaks the only leak I know off on AT&T based is LH1 which I am running.
I am not running the latest lh9 as lh1 has everything that lh9 has but doesnt have nfc screwed up so wallet still works with it.
I am running the lh9 modem.
By the time the S3 will become ineligible for updates, I will have moved on to my next phone. Back in 2011, Google set up an Android update alliance, where many manufacturers and U.S.-based carriers promised that new Android phones would receive timely OS updates for 18 months after launch. The only timely thing about this promise was the death of this alliance. After Jellybean, I give the S3 one more update before Samsung declares it non-upgradeable. It's unfortunate, but that's just the nature of the beast.
I'm well aware that only official Google devices (Nexus) get timely updates. This is the only reason why I held on to my Galaxy Nexus after buying the S3. I was well aware that it'll be a loooooooooong time before the S3 sees an update, so I kept the Nexus to satisfy my cravings for latest Android versions.

Good find! When the initial Samsung statement regarding the U.S. S3 variants being updated to Jellybean "in the coming months" was issued, it specifically mentioned "all carriers except for Sprint". Although the arrival of the Sprint update may signal that ours are just around the corner, I'm not holding my breath.
I just want to point out that Apple doesn't play by the same ruleset as Android OEM's do when it comes to releasing updates. Part of the original contract with AT&T was to prevent AT&T from having any say in Apple's updates and it kind of just kept going with the other carriers since they wanted the phone to sell so dearly.
Android OEM's have no such stipulation, Nexus devices not counting of course.
Saw on another site that AT&T wont see an update till January.
Of course that is just word of mouth, so take it for what you will.

Samsung Galaxy U.S. devices currently scheduled to receive the KitKat update include select carrier variants of the Galaxy Note® 3, Galaxy Note® II, Galaxy S® 4, Galaxy S® 4 mini™, Galaxy S® 4 Active™, Galaxy S® 4 zoom™, Galaxy S® III, Galaxy S® III mini™, Galaxy Mega®, Galaxy Light, Galaxy Note® 8.0, Galaxy Tab® 3, Galaxy Note® 10.1, Galaxy Note® 10.1 2014 Edition.
Availability varies by carrier and product, with updates beginning today and continuing throughout the coming months.
If you have one of the Galaxy devices mentioned in the announcement, be sure to let us know when/if the update lands. T-Mobile isn’t always speedy when it comes to giving the green light to software updates on Android. Let’s hope these start to land pretty snappish.
Nice. going to have to Odin back to stock then.
Still months away

Don't update, the bootloader might be locked. It best to wait for a dev to get a hold of the firmware and make it into a flashable rom that doesn't include the bootloader.

I am used to waiting to take updates being on VZW and what they did with breaking root with the Bionic and then the S4 fiasco. But why would Tmobile launch a phone with an unlocked bootloader only to lock it after an OTA update? It's one thing to patch an exploit, but to lock an unlocked bootloader when it was meant to launch unlocked I think would be stange. Again, I'm waiting anyway, but I think the phone will stay unlocked.
Not sure how excited I am for 4.4.2
No app ops. I can't believe google would intentionally remove a vital security feature. I guess we'll just have to add it back in

I agree! In fact, that's the first thing I thought about when I heard about the news.
We do, however, still have xPrivacy, though. I've donated to the developer and hopefully we'll see continued development including, I hope, a more user-friendly system closer to the way App Ops works. (For the record, I'm not knocking xProvacy; rather I'm pointing out that it could be easier to manage for laymen like myself.)

i'm guessing you are right. But you have to remember, it's not TMO that's doing it. It's all part of Sammy Knox initiative to make the phones more secure. If you have an unlocked bootloader, there's no way to say that your product is secure. We've picked apart the last 3 builds /na6/na7/nb3 of kitkat from germany, and there's alot of pointless crap built into these roms that will have to be pulled out to , along with the regular developmental crap that sammy puts in there for "Future Updates" Like fingerprints scanner perms and instructions, radios that will never be used, and something pointing to a backup antennae even though the phone does not have one (that's for the note 10.1)
I think they are being lazy, , making one huge TW Rom and then modifying it for individual devices. If you look at the S4 release and the Note 3 release, they are identical builds minus screen size settings and the addition of spen support.
Any idea when the TMobile update will be available? Sprint customers are getting theirs from today.
Some people from g+ are claiming to get the Sprint updates yesterday. Wonder if someone from TMO got updated too.
There is a complete silence regarding Tmobile update. Even the dog slow at&t has a leaked version out.
Apparently us cellular is getting their update as well.
Here's the link if any one is curious.

I hope we're next

I've have been with tmo from the beginning of this computer like smart phone generation, and I will say we are almost always the last to get an update. .. Our wifi calling and wifi alone had a bug for 6 months now no update when other carriers got the fix. .. Just saying. ...
Evertime there's an update these discussions happen. ... When when when. .. sit back relax and flash someone else's rom. ... lol

I'm on a KK custom ROM on my Note 3 so I'm not getting it. Maybe I need to flash back to stock. I'm in TX too btw.

Apparently using Mobile Odin you can flash the update with rootkeeper and you keep Knox at 0x0 and get a rooted 4.4.2 (make sure you set it to reboot into download to flash the bootloader)
Details are in this thread:

I wish T-Mobile would herry the heck up!!!!

Yeah i can see where you're coming from. but I still don't think Sammy will lock it down, but we'll see.
TMO is busy now with their "marketing campaign" to attract new customers.. They have no time to do software updates for existing customers
Come on peeps cut them some slack

This is what I was afraid of when switching to TMO. Yeah I save money but at the cost of crappy CS service and very very slow to non-existant updates.
