2.3 for defy on the way - Defy General

http://bbs.goapk.com/thread-599316-1-1.html
the op has posted several pics preview for his own 2.3 defy rom, but he's still working on it.
i think it's probably true, since he has already released several gingerbread rom for other devices...
google translate:
"Posts by Chun editor at 2011-1-10 18:08
Come defy the 2.3 ROM surrounding it. See 2.3 above defy it, the effect is good. Speed quickly. Just look. Also need further processing. 2.3 do not need to question the true and false. Kernel can be compiled, let alone version. I can change 2.8. There is no need to take the skin of 2.1 to 2.3 screenshot heart. You do not want to retain my own. No comments so genuine version. "

I cant read a thing, and I see no pics

login needed to see the attached pics there. i posted the links here, which should be accessible...

Maybe he is using the 2.2 kernel? I don't know

I can't believe it. But if it is true Defy has a great future.

Hi,
That sounds really nice !
I hope to see some progress on that
Regards

Wohoaaaa. . . way to go. No wonder chinese are leading in software and reverse engineering products.

I cant see the images.

i hope it's true and we can get further information. gingerbread and rooted without blur would make a dreamphone of the defy.

looks like defy is very popular in china, because on those forum thread they have posted alreade more than 700 messages about something in 7 hours

There must be some english speaking chinese people in here that could 'summarize' what the thread says for us here at XDA

how do we know the pictures are snapshot from Defy?
but nevertheless, i wish this device will get 2.2 or 2.3 rom soon.. doesnt matter if it's official or unoffical.

Come defy the 2.3 ROM surrounding it. See 2.3 above defy it, the effect is good. Speed quickly. Just look. Also need further processing. 2.3 do not need to question the true and false. "[/QUOTE]
The google translate is pretty close.
This is what I can translate, my English by all means is not good so I hope it is good enough.
Come round and have a look at the defy 2.3 rom. Have a look at 2.3 rom running on defy, the effect/outcome isn't bad. Speed is quite fast. This is just for you guys to have a look. There is still a lot of work to be done. There is no need to doubt whether this is genuine or not, even Kernel(not sure whether it is the right term) can already be compiled, therefore 2.3 version will be easy. I can even change the version to 2.8, therefore there is no need for me to use the source of 2.1 and the skin of 2.3 to photoshop. If you guys do not wish to use it I will keep it for myself so there is no need to argue about whether this is genuine or not.
Hope this is clearer.

Thx for the translation, great news for our defy.

thanks Jiangchen..
it's a really great news indeed.

I have serious doubts regarding the validity of the provided information. If it is valid, I really wonder how the poster worked around the "signed bootloader/kernel"-problem.

Cant believe!
How will they do it?
Or the bootloader is still open!!

Maybe it is a little bit strange but every second post is:"Oh look so powerfull" (Google Translate). Are there any news or was it a hoax?

This is how smooth the Hero SHOULD be!

http://android.modaco.com/content/h...291737/this-is-how-smooth-the-hero-should-be/
That looks super smooth! It greatly improves the overall experience and will probably lure me back to Rosie in favor of the default home screen
I cant see any difference between that and my hero. I get no lag and switching between screens is just as smooth and fast.

yeah, i agree with you. my hero Runs just as fast with no lag And i have the Flipping Clock!
Wait a minute! Now, How do we know thats an actual update coming up?? The video was made by modaco and posted at his website... You can clearly see it contains the superuser app and the market enabler app on the phone. An OFFICIAL VIDEO with the update would never have such apps installed!
Like i said before my hero runs just as fast and i could make a video to prove it.... But this is NO UPDATE PREVIEW OF WHATS COMING UP!
and now im thinking, everytime modaco makes a post in these forums, he links to his website where the actual posts are made... this is not the first time...

Hah, it is a video of the upcoming update!
I do say on the video that i've installed a few apps, and it is rooted (I said that on the first video take (that I corrupted by pulling the SD from the camera!)), not sure about the one I posted.
There are definitely considerable performance improvements in the new ROM, particularly when i've got all my usual stuff installed and running - Rosie remains smooth as butter (which it didn't before!)
Of course I link to my forum where the posts are made, i'm posting here for information!

I have a pink Hero at the moment, maybe i'll boot them with the same setup and do a comparison vid.

Hopefully it comes out soon, however i have made very little to no modifications to my hero to get it running as fast as i have, so im guessing that once i do my own modifications with the newer build ill be able to have things running better and faster than ever!

Froyo + Sense ROM?

Is there a stable Froyo with Sense out there, one based on the Evo's ROM cause I did flash a rom by avalaunch. But it was based on the desire. I didn't like that and it didn't seem as fluid. So my question is... Is there a Froyo with Sense ROM out there thats stable and based on the Evo? and if there is what features are not working (if any) thank you
So far, all the FroYo roms are missing ( at the very least ) the back camera & 4G. However DamageControl & Cyanogen should have working ROM's within the next few days. Cyanogen will be AOSP, but i think DC might be Sense UI.
I initially thought I'd want an AOSP rom but after trying them I much prefer Sense, mainly for the widgets. Lets hope DC has sense! Wouldnt that be a slap in the face to HTC devs who need until December to complete it.. and DC does it with 2 devs in their spare time?

Htc devs are in no rush and it's not due to be released in December but BY December meaning any time until then
Is there any time frame for when DC development will come out with froyo with sense ROM. I currently am running DC 3.2.3. If they release it will it be listed in DCupdater?
From what I understand Google will not let anyone release 2.2 until N1 has it for a while. HTC has no control over it. It is google's way of keeping the N1 atop of the phone ladder. The same will happen with the next version. Its google's game, we have to play by their rules.

I don't think that's true... The source code is released so anyone can compile it whenever. That's the whole point of it being open.

I've been stalking the DC thread for the past few days & it looks like they're starting to wrap things up. They didn't give an exact ETA, but based off the few comments they have made, i'd guess within the next few days ( i would love it for this weekend ), but i guess we'll just have to wait & see .

Well, not entirely. When Google is finished testing on their "standard" hardware (in this case, the Nexus One) they will designate a final version. Then, HTC needs to get hold of this final version and add support for any unique hardware or software that their devices have. Think of it like release candidates and RTM versions of Windows. PC manufacturers get hold of the release candidates and test versions so that they can develop drivers and make sure their devices all work with the new OS. Then they get the final version, tweak what needs to be tweaked, run it through bug testing, and then pass it along.
In this case, HTC has to get the final version, make sure all of their apps and drivers work, make sure it works on their phones, and then pass it to Sprint for *more* testing to make sure it plays nice with the network and performs well.

I am aware that for many ROMs the camera doesn't work. Will it be working DC's ROM? And will it have sense? Is there any speculations of certain features not working? sorry these questions but since you have been "stalking" their thread you would know this stuff more than other (atleast I guess).

Also the ROM will include Sense w/ the option to disable if desired.

[REQUEST]Request to port this ROM[REQUEST]

Hello beloved ROM Developers ,
I have actually never created a Request thread on XDA, so this is a first. It's a simple request for a ROM port, however, being completely oblivious to ROM development, I am not sure how simple it would actually be to implement it. I have reached out to the original Dev of this ROM, but did not hear anything back, so I thought I'd try my luck here. I am basically an EVO convert, now on VZW, with a DInc. I have been trying various ROMs for the DInc, but for some reason I keep missing the ROM I had on my EVO.
So, here goes nothing. Can someone please be kind enough to try and port this ROM to DInc?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808656
I understand that there is a similar ROM for DInc, I believe it's called Carbon Fusion or something like that, but in my trial of it, it lacked stability, speed, and the depth of customization that this EVO ROM has in it.
It's a humble request guys, please don't flame me, thanks for reading !
Have you tried GB?

I'm sure you know this already, but just in case, I think Incredible Re-engineered by Chingy and Redemptive Revolution are EVO ROM's. There are also a few others, but cant recall them right now.
But if you want something with new features, and some cool widgets, I suggest you check out The Desire Z ROM's. I wont use anything but Z ROM's now. They are very smooth.

For the lag, try switching kernels, I was having a little lag also. cant remember what kernel I switched to, but it cleared up the problem.

synisterwolf, I like this ROM for it's perfect blend of looks, performance, stability, and content. I too would not be opposed to a theme, but I thought it might be easier to ask someone to just look at the ROM to see exactly what's in there, and if it could all be cooked into one single ROM for the DInc. Again, I hope someone can do it... I remember hearing that EVO and DInc frameworks and development is very similar. So I wonder if it's only a matter of replacing the base with the latest Verizon, instead of Sprint, and then taking everything that's in the EVO ROM, while changing things that might matter, like the keyboard or the camera app, perhaps?
I haven't tried the Z ROMs at all, but this is because everyone one of them have bugs listed out on the main page, with camera issues, and even lag, as you mentioned... Perhaps the Thunderbolt dump and other things might be able to assist with these gaps?
Thanks again for the interest here, guys. If you would also like to see this ROM ported, please be sure to mention it in this thread, I am sure some generous developer will take a look at it ?

If nothing pans out with getting this ported, try a Z rom. They appear to be very similar. Dont be scared off by the Issues they talk about. Dev's seem to do this for the Z, but they are very nice ROM's. The only issue that remains is basically the 720 recording, which I dont use. I have never experienced the 3G drops, and most dont.

alright here's the deal. I mashed this between chingy51o's incredibly re-engineered and xxbabboixx228's rom. I take absolutely no credit for the work and it is not identical to babiboi's rom.
Also you still see some remnants of chingy's rom in it that someone else if they want can clean up if they want to make a release from it.
I have not pm'd either of them to ask if I can make a release of it, as I do not intend to support it or make a public release thread etc. etc.
I will post it on dropbox and like I said, I'm not claiming any of the work or this rom, anyone can ask for permission from them to start a release thread for it and I only made this for the OP and my personal use.
edit: going another route, I'll report in a few. I really don't want to release anything, no matter what my intentions are, with parts from their rom without permission. Going to go for a direct port rather than mash together, don't really see the point in a frankenstien mess

I was not sure if you were open to taking requests to make changes to your ROM, based on User requests, so I didn't want to bother you. The EVO ROM was almost exactly how I wanted it, so it was just easy to explain, that is, just request a straight port.

Do you think there will be a Android2.3 Rom for Defy?

ROM 2.2 works well, but do you think there will be a Android2.3 Rom for Defy? I like flashing new roms
with bootloader locked?
Simply and definitly NO...
With a unlocked bootloader, maybe
If you're talking about an official update it is hard to say...
As you can see, although there are already a few 2.3 phones around, Motorola still delays Defy 2.2 for most of the world.
So... Personally I don't think they're doing this because they wanna jump to 2.3 directly, but because they're concentrating on other things (like Atrix).
So I would rather expect an unofficial 2.3.
Cheers!

Yeah very stupid for moto to tight things up. Just let advanced users playing around, and novice users bricking their phones. They won't get bad rep and would most likely get some extra sales.
Well we could use Froyo Kernel for Gingerbread, Gingbread to Froyo ist not that difference!

Hey you are chinese, then why dont you follow that thread on porting 2.3 on defy at goapk forum and let us know what is happening at the development?
a true one? probably not unless moto unlocks the bootloader, or it releases one itself (maybe, maybe not, moto ahs a bad reputation on tihs).
the current 2.2 roms are rocking 2.6.32 kernels and official 2.3 should be rocking 2.6.35 kernels.
that being said, one can run a hackish 2.3 rom with 2.6.32 kernels, i *think* it can be done but then it won't be truly 2.3
I don't think they will release official 2.3ROM because they didn't released a final 2.2. I hope, that Moto will officially unlocks the Bootloader to give us more possibilities...
I really hope that there will be a Gingerbread ROM some time in the future, preferably with the bootloader unlocked rather than the hacks for which I cannot prise the authors enough.
However, the Defy is still a great phone, also with 'just' 2.2 and that is what counts most to me. Who knows what kind of phone € 300 buys you in a year from now

Not yet
2.2 upgrade was allways announced for Q2 2011, so they're in the planning.
After that, who knows. They may offer 2.3 after 6 month or more (when 2.4 is release on they high-end phone) But I really don't expect for that today.
For me the Defy will stay on 2.2 for Motorola. The only hope it an unlocked bootlooader (officially or not)
Same here, Defy is a 2.2 device, period. A bootloader unlock would let us use 2.3 or higher but I doubt Motorola will spend more money on a new official update. Let's hope they will actually release a 2.2 ROM in a few months (the South American market should get its froYo within a month according to their schedule).
Well after the editorial of chris ziegler of engadget about motoblur they better off kill motoblur.
Defy will have Gingerbread when Nexus one gets Android 2.5

Lazy journalism, pointing out the obvious.
The fact he once thought Blur was good says it all IMO.
Anyway, if Motorola haven't listened to feedback from their customers, why would one blogger's opinion sway them?

tru dat. One review or a few posts won't sway M, however, a flood of consistant calls from customers might. To the phones
On the other hand, I did speak with tmous yesterday and they said the 2.2 which is supposed to be release 'real soon' is going to be a higher end 2.2 version...whatever that means, not even the rep had a clue what that meant but I suppose that is what they are told to say.

Sounds like a large pile of BS to me.
Froyo is Froyo, Motorola aren't going to roll out some superior version of it - in fact, with Blur, if anything it's an inferior version...
i really do believe that 2.2 froyo update will come .. but 2.3 gingerbread ? nah i dont think so ... motorola is not really known for it's updates ..but if it comes my defy will be very happy to grab it ...
Motorola has already announced a Froyo update soon and I cant wait for that. Moto's history with updates and the locked bootloader doesn't give us much to hope for, but let's keep our fingers crossed! It would be amazing though!

HTC Salsa a testimony for Defy to have Gingerbread

HTC Salsa internally is very similar to Defy. 800 MHz CPU (Some sites reported as being 600 Mhz), 512MB RAM, 1520 mAh Battery, and all the sensors Salsa supports are already built-in to Defy too.
HTC Salsa is released with Gingerbread a testimony Defy is a well qualified handset to have it.
the wildfire s is only 600Mhz and that runs gingerbread
err im not trying to be sarcastic or anything but cm7 is ginger bread right and it runs fine on the defy... so why the redundant post?

Posting in this forum won't do that. Posting at the official Motorola channels and/or directly emailing them might. Though, the ones with the biggest voice probably are the carriers. And they are counter to what we want, they prefer to have the phones as locked down as possible.

Agree here too. XDA mainly for us looking for quick answer like updates, custom updates, adding features or removing features or even solving problems.. Motorola would just close one eye reading here(if they even read here) as it's not their official site to follow any kind of action.
Check out my signature below... I'm running Gingerbread too and it run awesomely smooth and fast!

I have different opinion on that. Motorola can ignore anything on their own forums but less on other public domains such as XDA. If they were listening they wouldn't need to conduct a survey in the UK to figure things out.
I don't think blaming carriers are going to help me to get my updates sooner. The situation with India release and pulling it off is an evident the whole fiasco of late updates is Motorola's fault.
Probably UK has the largest Defy owners out side of USA, then again Motorola hasn't released Froyo to UK yet, as of 09 June 2011, but other european countries have been getting their updates already. Motorola couldn't release all the updates for all the regions at same time because they don't have the means and management to do it. Not a good thing for a global company that is trying to make a come back to Mobile market at the cost of getting me frustrated to the point wanting to buy another handset from another manufacturer just to disassociate with them.
As I have previously mentioned this on another thread, I use my smartphone as a tool, hence custom roms are not reliable for me at all. I can't afford to reset my phone everytime there is a new version of the custom rom. So software as well as hardware is important to me, not just the hardware.
I know UK is going to get Froyo next week but I'm way too frustrated with Motorola now. Defy mostly likely is going to be my last experience with Motorola.

I'm sorry, but this makes absolutely no sense. If they really are ignoring forums that they themselves provide and manage, what incentive would they have to pay attention to forums they don't?

That's not really what I was going for. My point was that carriers too are our "enemy". So contacting them with your concerns, in addition to contacting Motorola, is something worth doing.

I don't see the connection. What about a custom rom would prevent you from using your phone as a tool? Considering custom roms could very well be more stable than what Motorola provides.

Err, just because a new version, doesn't mean you have to install it the second it becomes available.
@CSharpHeaven,
You have so much time to write but doesn't have time to resetting your phone over a new updated custom rom. Beside you could always use backup app like TitaniumBackup to restore your apps and google account to restore your contacts. you don't have to be a scientist to do all these and restoring to default stock rom is just a few clicks away. You keep on frustrating over late official froyo when you could already run gingerbread here is not making any sense. Why frustrate?? you could always return back to where your stock rom were if the official update really roll out in your place.
Your persistent isn't going anywhere as you are logging in XDA where people mainly looking for custom rom, leaked rom, customised sbf and so on. There's nothing you can get here if you're still waiting over OFFICIAL roll out Froyo unless you willing to break your own scared world and start flashing and see how deep is the rabbit hole.. I'm using Defy running Gingerbread 2.3.3 replying here and it's awesomely smooth, fast and beautiful, I have yet encounter any glitch on this super Gingerbread. Froyo is history for me. My tool is more powerful than yours even if you got your Froyo next week, is that making sense?
Perhaps you really need to change your phone and stop waiting..

Example: HTC were forced to back down on bootloader locking because of the public's outcry in public domains i.e. Engadget, XDA, Facebook, Twitter and so on. Do you think they would have listened if people were just posting their opinions on HTC's forums?

That is true, however, I own a retail version of the handset hence I'm not tied to any carrier but Motorola forces me to wait all the tests by carriers are carried out before I get my updates. I'm guessing the tests are due to customisation only (i.e., carrier logo and apps) which my handset doesn't have.

Firstly Reliability. Custom ROMs for Defy are not as stable as the official ROMs. Secondly, the developers do not provide warranty for the work. In business, companies would not allow using such custom ROMs in their handsets for security and reliability issues.

I just replied to Gusar321's post that also applies to some of the points you made. I would appreciated if you read it.
I know how to make a backup and I previously rooted my Defy to use TitaniumBackup to freeze unwanted apps and services that dramatically improved the performance of Defy. About a month ago I backed up everything, unrooted the phone, and reset the handset when the first batch of updates from Motorola started rolling. I haven't been able to use my handset software features ever since because I don't have the time to setup everything when I know after the ROM update I have to redo everything again.
The best practice after installing a ROM is to master reset the phone. This is how Android is. You might not need to do it but others may have to. That is why it called best practice meaning you are better off doing something.
I had to root my handset to enable backing up my data as the standard backup method offered by Motorola portal tool does not support many features you may find in other tools (i.e. the apps, wifi settings). As we speak I cannot restore my data (i.e. my notes that I need) because my phone is unrooted. I constantly worry to brick my phone during rooting and unrooting process. I haven't found a way to root Android 2.2 on defy yet. Is latest SuperOneClick release the way to go?
I really don't have the time, every time I make a post in here I have to stay up longer to finish my work for the day.
