Obviously, I think the use of the word "Series" tells me that Microsoft isn't done with the many "options" they will offer with WP7S. I think a nice enterprise/business UI is on the way as well, if not coming a bit after the holiday 2010 release.
Any predictions? I'm looking forward to this update in the Series just because my life really doesn't revolve around what my friends ate for breakfast and what movie they just went to see.
Personally, I need to make sure that I have a professional messaging/mail layout, Office, file management, VNC capabilities, and the ability to customize the UI based on limitations necessary per business needs.
1. Office Communicator Mobile with PUSH capabilities
2. Remote Device Management
3. Remote Desktop
Well, I guess Microsoft already put a lot for Business users in there: multiple Mail-Push-Systems, Sharepoint Integration and so on.
One could perhaps integrate Status messages on corporate progress from time management systems to the people screeen (and i'm pretty sure this already integrates with MS Exchange).
It comes down to what information u need and u are able to have that on the Start Screen via Live Tiles. What will be interesting is how company's will be able to deploy their custom software to the devices - as Marketplace is not the way to deploy these.
All the Social Networking Systems are just a means of adding additional information - u don't need it, u don't use it. Guess there'll be a RDP Client in there (although i hope it's more usable now, than the version in WinMo 6.5).
Remote Management - well, do you really think MS would release a phone that supports all the features of MS Exchange Active Sync but omit the manageability (disable storage card, disable camera, wipe device are not that hard to implement).
I would like to know if there's gonna be an application HUB in the new Windows Phone 7 Series??
Would be nice to have a hub where you can add your favorite 3rd party applications like:
- Location/Navigation software (Google Maps, TomTom, iGO, CoPilot etc.)
- Browser software (Opera, Skyfire etc.)
- Games
- Multimedia software (CorePlayer, TCPMP etc.)
Sorted by example on Category or Most used.
Would be nice, usefull and marketable.
I don't get why Microsoft would introduce an "Application Hub" when the point of Hubs was to get rid of the "applications".
Games would be in the games hub, multimedia would be in the multimedia hub. There's an applications list in alphabetical order on the start page if the right arrow is pressed...
according to http://www.modaco.com/ there's a marketplace hub. does this mean this is the only entry point to install applications? Makes me get panic attacks!
I guess that there'd be another way to install applications, unless they want to have corporate users stay with WinMo 6.5.* for the future, as when a company wants to have a mobile app tied to there custom company software for in house use, they for sure wouldn't want it to take the way over the Marketplace.
As for having the most used applications easily available: you could just pin them to the Startscreen a.k.a. Live-Tiles. You can pin single contacts, single albums, single songs there and I believe somebody already said, that u could pin programs from the App-List to the right too. Depends on the application how it then uses the Live Tile (to display highscore, in-game scenes or what not).

That is a good point. I hope you are right. Not being able to run whatever program I want to is a big deal breaker for me. If this were the case I would go Android unless WP7 gets jailbroken (I feel so sad using this term for WM/WP; it is so open right now. Why restrict it in such ways?).
the reason that they are restricting the apps, is to make the system more stable. They want the experience to be amazing on every phone, eg making the hardware requirements so strict. They want to be able to evaluate what an app does to the system before it is released. They are making the submission parameters easier to comply with, so it will be easy to put your work on marketplace. They new marketplace specs for 6.5 will give developers the ability to make links straight to the app on the marketplace.
Initially I was starting to kinda freak out, but I think this is for the best. It will force people to use the marketplace, and since it won't support old apps, it will move all the applications for windows mobile to one spot, it is just one more way they are trying to compete with apple.
And on a side note, I'm not actually sure that winpho7 has a file explorer... Nothing in the demo gave me reason to think that one would be there. I think they are trying to replace explorer with the hubs.
If you swipe left on the start page, you get a list of all your applications.
I don't think there's a seperate, categorised hub.
I believe you can also add shortcut tiles on the start page, but that's all I know.
(And yeah, I too would like to find out whether WP7 has a file explorer...)

I don't mean to be rude but this doesn't make any sense.
Add your favorite applications to your Start Screen. All the rest are in a list when you swipe to the right.
Apps that fit a certain category would go in that category's hub. Why would you have Games in an Application hub and then have a Games hub? Remember under the Music&Video hub there was Pandora (right now they have it under a list of apps under the hub).. that's your Multimedia software.
I do agree that additional hubs would make sense.. we don't only care about people and pictures etc. but also things like RSS news updates, or like you said, location and navigation. An Internet hub would be a good place for Favorites/Bookmarks, History (shared across every installed browser), RSS, IE8 Web Slices, website notifications (not every update on Twitter and Facebook is by an actual person/contact), etc. If you give the same treatment to Location/Mapping, then suddenly you don't have the standalone apps of IE and Bing sticking out in the hub-centric experience.
but a bunch of shortcuts to different programs doesn't make sense as a hub, just pin them to Start.

The problem is that you have to pay $100 for your spot at the marketplace table. Even if your app is free. Simply not fair. No more xda members coding up their own programs and releasing free.
And hubs is not a file explorer. I dont want a device that thinks it knows what I want to do with my files. If I want something that restricts where I get apps and what files I am allowed to store on my device I will get an iphone.
The only thing wp7 might have over iphone os (besides interface; I do think wp7 has a very cool and original ui; that is a matter of opinion though) is multitasking. While details are slim and it sounds like multitasking capability will be very restricted, it sounds like background processing will be available to third party apps at least in some form. Thats more than iphones can say.
Unfortunately I think its android time for me. But I'm not sad about it. Ive started really looking into it and it seems pretty cool. It has full multitasking now and the latest phones are sporting some awesome hardware. I will probably get my first android phone over the summer and i'm excited.
I'm not waiting nearly another year to get hands on an actual wp7 device. Maybe when more details come out it won't be so bad but I doubt it and I'm not waiting to find out. The direction of Microsoft is back in time toward more restriction and control of the product. It's time I jump ship to an open source OS. Sad because I love MS desktop products. My computing world is a constant battle between google and MS. I use windows 7, outlook, exchange, windows mobile office ect. But I choose google over ie, google over bing, and soon android over wm. Will be interesting to see how well this combination will play together.
I don't think installing Cab files will change all too much..I believe it will be much like it is today except we aren't putting the cart before the horse this time. I mean Marketplace just launched months ago even though WinMo has been around for over a decade...its hard to have an effective marketplace when people who want apps know the better places to find them. This time around the app store will launch with the OS so i think it puts more emphasis on the App store (to the average consumer) as well as being better integrated into the phone...but who's/what's stopping us from just downloading Apps the same as usual? Microsoft has mentioned that Activesync will still work with WP7 (Zune will be just for music, pictures, movies) so why is it all of a sudden impossible just to do what we've been doing for years?
It seems odd the exodus that seems to be happening lately. Its like you guys were perfectly happy with with Windows the way it is now?!?! If you are then stay with it the way it is now..lol. I personally can't wait to the what the guys here are gonna come up with for HUB's...hell I can't wait for HTC to put their special touch on WP7..I can imagine the HUB put together in a TF3D fashion...with their own additions of Weather (with that gorgeous UI) stocks...etc. I'm not gonna lie...the possibilities are as endless in the future as they are with the current OS. I think it will be fun to see in about a year, how many of you guys who are riding the fence or doubting the upcoming release will change your minds.
I once had to drag my best friend on a double date....he didn't want to go, he complained the whole way there...saw the girl, and did everything he could to make an excuse to get out of there (she wasn't his type)...now they're married, crazy things happen when you give something a chance. I've waited 2+ years for this and won't back out now just because I see something I don't know the answer to...once I get the OS in hand I will make my decision. I think thats the most logical way

I think you have misunderstood the announcements. Activesync (as in sync with PC) will NOT be available. It also seems that there is no way to access the file system on the device. The only way to install apps is through the marketplace. They are removing the ability to just install a cab as we have always done. That is the problem. I am not saying I won't give it a chance. These points may turn out to be wrong. All I am saying is that current info suggests that this is the case and if so WP7 is not for me. Of course I am not going to pass final judgement until it is released. But since all indicators point to the negative I am not going to wait to find out for sure when there are tempting alternatives. And no I am not satisfied with WM as it currently is. The problem is that WP7 fixed what was wrong with WM6 and at the same time trashed everything that was good about WM6 (once again, nothing is for certain but this is what evidence points to).
ok even if it's like that it's microsoft.
Even iphone has jailbreak. In our case we will not have to worry for warranty.
The so called no oem sw will return as bumerang on them.
This is the most hardcore forum on pda's and every one says bhaaaa on MS.
When they did their survey they mast asked only iphone and simple phone users, sertainly not wm users. )

Communication manager
You can initiate connection from both PC and device (tap PC Synchronization in TouchXperience to etablish connection from device). You can connect via USB or Wi-Fi, but the first time you have to connect via USB so WP Device Manager can deploy TouchXperience and your device can get your PC IP address.
In the current version you can't manually set the PC or phone IP address to connect, or change default ports.
Make sure port 8007 is not blocked by firewall on PC and port 8107 is reachable on device.
When WP Device Manager initiate a connection and can't connect to the phone, in case you are connected via USB it will launch TouchXperience, in other cases it will send a push notification to your phone asking you to manually launch TouchXperience
Some tasks requires your phone screen to be unlocked
It is not necessary to have Zune runing in order to use WP Device Manager.
If WP Device Manager does not start at all, make sure you installed all the requirements and try to reinstall full .NET Framework 4.0 and developer tools.
If you are not able to connect or if some features are not properly working, go to Settings in WP Device Manager, click Restore default settings and eventually restart your PC.
If Windows Phone Device Manager is not able to communicate with TouchXperience, go to Settings in WP Device Manager, click Restore default settings and restart your PC. Try to temporarly disable your anti-virus or firewall programs to see if that's the problem. You can also try the registry fix in attachment
If you have connection problems, try the following may help: unplug/replug your phone, close or start Zune, restart WP Device Manager, make sure your device is detected by Zune, in worst case restart your PC.
WP Device Manager or some components of it may be considered as potential threat by anti-virus or firewall programs, this is a false alarm, you may need to add exceptions to your anti-virus or firewall may prevent WP Device Manager from working correctly.
WP Device Manger is automatically disconnected when you quit TouchXperience (for example when you launch an app or return to Start screen). This is not a bug, this is because TouchXperience is stopped due to the lack of native multitasking in WP7. To workaround you can enable multitasking in TouchXperience settings.
Tap on a menu title in TouchXperience and the main menu will show up
If you want to take screenshots of an other application on the phone you need to enable multitasking in TouchXperience settings
Some features needing high privileges on the phone (f.e. file system access) may not be available, this depends on the unlock level of your phone.
Applications installed with other tools than WP Device Manager are not recognized (they are identified by their id) on non-HTC device. To solve the problem you can simply browse your original XAP files, application info will be automatically cached and diplayed in the app manager.
If only sideloaded applications are displayed it's because your phone does not have full file system access.
Some application versions are incorrect. This is due to the fact that some developers does not update their application manifest with correct version number when they release new versions. To fix the problem you can check for app updates and click on Dismiss All assuming all your applicatons have been updated to their latest version.
You can't copy most of DLL and EXE in \Windows directory, this is simply because these are not files but modules.
You can check TouchXperience version in Settings or in WP Device Manager application list.
You should have a folder with device name in My Documents on your PC, place here the files you want to sync with the phone.
You can send toast notifications from any program on your PC using command line C:\Windows\WPDeviceManager\WPDeviceManager.exe /SendToast "message".
In order to use WP Device Manager from Windows Device Stage, you must have Windows 7 and driver signature verification disabled, unfortunately this is because Windows 7 recognize only digitally signed drivers.
Be carefull when using device restoration, incorrect usage or unexpected bugs may cause loss of data.
Don't use full backup/restore feature on custom ROMS!
If you get a message "Unable to launch TouchXperience" on custom ROMS it's because the ROM has some missing components, so you have to launch it manually.
Please uninstall any previously installed version of WP Device Manager and TouchXperience on your phone.
This beta is private for testing purpose, you are not allowed to redistribute it.

Ok I understand that sometimes Shaps shouldn't ad us too early and make us wait long to finally release tools who are not complet, at the risk to disappoint us.
But remember DFT make us wait 4 month before they release magldr.
WP7 is a new OS,there is still lot of work to do. Everyone here have a life, maybe a work, a wife and some kids behind the screen.
People like shaps are doing the best they can, and just for this don't blame it.
If you don't like his work, log off this topic.

The goal of xda developers is to post information regarding development. That includes development in alpha, beta, closed or open. How in the heck is this different than any of the launchers in android that haven't been released, the programs users are developing for wp7, or any sort of development not released?
xda is information and a place where users and develop interact to find solutions to common problems, where users can become developers, and inform users of development for their xda/samsung/wp/android device.
So why does this thread exist? it's x - d - fricking a! That's why! So if you have a problem with imfloflo (moderator) posting this topic, take it up to PM and don't clutter the topic of what you feel doesn't need to be here.
And yes that's what's WRONG with xda
@OP
If you are planning to release a free/lite version please let me know when it´s available for public, I may write about it
Guys please keep this thread on topic. Anymore arguments and such after this post will result in infractions, anymore after that, I will have to talk to the senior mods about handing out temporary bans. Please stop pestering the OP about when, and how the app release will be executed. It will be released when its ready. You don't take bread out of the oven 10 min before it is ready just because you are hungry, you take it out when its ready. Same goes for software development. So please be patient!

@OP Just get me on gtalk when you have problems, you know where to get my id.
@orb3000 i'm not the developers of this, you can find more information on the http://www.facebook.com/touchxperience page or on the official forum http://forum.touchxperience.com/
I think this apps will be free when final version comes.
Been following Schap's devving for some time now and gotta say its looking good
I fail to see what is wrong with this thread and i would suggest for all those people who are flaming/trolling/moaning that they consider what XDA-DEVS is actually all about; that being a developer forum
Now hopefully i dont need to explain myself any further and therefore i would respectfully request that you please review our rules for avoidance of doubt. If the whinging continues infractions will be issued.
Many thanks for your understanding, if any of you wish to discuss this any further then please feel free to PM me and NOT clutter this thread.
Regards and enjoy your weekend,
Tim.

no at the moment doesn't work with Nodo, infact shaps said "don't upgrade to Nodo"
A bit off topic, but what would you consider a fair donation? I'm not a rich man in fact i'm very poor but would like to contribute and test this app without offending with a too small donation.

I gave him 5€ and add a little message to explain my reasons and i was added to beta test program few days after.
Erm sorry but can someone explain to me what's chevronwp7 in simple words? I know it's like a jail break or something and it can sideload apps or something. can someone explain to me these few things:
1) what's sideloading?
2) are there any risks involved using it?
3) does it allow me to download any apps from the marketplace or something? if not, what can I do with it?
sorry I'm kind of a noob about wp7. just asking this coz I was thinking of getting a new phone, either android or wp7. Thanks in advance!
This really belongs more in the Q&A forum, but...
Sideloading is the process of installing an application onto your phone directly from a PC, instead of using the marketplace. Apps for sideloading are packaged in ZIP files with the extension changed to XAP. They work almost exactly like marketplace apps (there are a few small differences).
In order to sideload applications, your phone needs to be developer-unlocked. There are multiple ways to do this. ChevronWP7 Unlocker, which only works on the first two versions on WP7 (not on any build 7389 or higher), is an unofficial technique, which some have referred to as jailbreaking. There are other techniques, such as registering for a marketplace developer account (or getting help from somebody who has registered), or using the forthcoming ChevronWP7 Labs (same guys, different project), or using the registry editor built into LG phones. That's all that dev-unlock is, incidentally - a registry edit. It is a perfectly normal change, nothing close to the level of lackery of jailbreaking in iPhone.
Technically, there are no risks to dev-unlocking your phone, although I suppose using some of the unofficial methods do carry risks if done incorrectly. However, there are definitely risks to sideloading applications. Sideloaded apps can make changes to your phone - in some cases, big changes, potentially including malware or making your phone not work - and they haven't gone through the verification process that Microsoft uses to keep harmful software out of the marketplace. In general, the apps published through XDA-Developers are reputable, but there is no guarantee. Even an app that is not intended to be harmful could mess something up by accident. I and some other developers post the source code to our apps, partially as a way of allowing people to check and ensure that our apps do only what they say they do.
Developer-unlocking does not allow you to install marketplace apps without paying for them. That's not at all what this forum is about, and asking about it is not a good idea - at best, you'll probably just get the thread locked. Please go elsewhere if you want to talk piracy.
What sideloading is useful for is installing apps that, for whatever reason, Microsoft doesn't allow in the marketplace. These apps range from small tweaks to the phone (adding a custom theme color or changing notification sounds, for example), to adding features that aren't officially available (things like Internet tethering for a PC), to opening up the phone's security completely and allowing you to do nearly whatever you want with it.
I hope that answers your questions. As to WP7 vs. Android, that really depends on what you want out of the phone. In either case, it's not a good topic of discussion for the development and hacking forum.
so in a way, chevronwp7 enables the phone be able to download third-party apps from the net? like how android can download .apk files?
Right now, ChevronWP7 Unlocker typically doesn't enable anything - it hasn't worked since the first versions of WP7, nearly a year ago. If you have a really old phone or flash a really old ROM, I guess you could still use it.
However, you're correct that developer-unlocking a phone (which is what ChevronWP7 Unlocker did) allows you to download third-party apps off the Internet (or develop them on your own PC) and install them to the phone using USB. Unless you're using a custom ROM, you can't install them straight to the phone; instead you use one of the many XAP deployment tools.
WP7 application packages are files with the .XAP extension (I believe it originally stood for "XNA Application Package). I believe they are similar to Android's .APK files, though I haven't actually cracked one of those open to look.
Hi,
Please resolve my basic queries in regards of Windows Phone:
Like Rooting in android and Jailbreak in iOS, is there anything in Windows Phone as well?
Android apps are .apk. Like this, what about Windows phone apps?
In case of android, some of users install apk from different sources (apart from Play Store). Can it be done in Windows phone as well?
In comparison to android phone, how Windows phones are secure?
Can we install .exe file in Windows Phone? and
In comparison of Android, why should we consider windows phone?
Regards
GNS
Google search engine is your only friend.
1. There are a handful of devices that can be rooted at this time. Some of them have custom ROMs available to them as well.
2. Windows Phone apps are .xap (old filetype), .appx (current filetype), and .appxbundle (package of .appx and other required files).
3. Yes, apps can be sideloaded from the computer, installed via Device Portal over the internet, and some are directly installable by executing them.
4. Windows Phone is currently the most secure mobile OS.
5. Maybe?
6. It's a personal choice if you use it or not. Each OS has it's pros and it's cons. You can get one pretty cheap, around $30-50. If your intrigued, buy one and play with it.
1- Developer unlocking (allows amateur apps, very easy to do) and interop unlocking (allows breaking the sandbox -hence "interoperation"-, mostly unrestricted editing of system files, comparable to root, is done via an exploit in the OS)
2- .xap, .appx, .appxbundle
3- Some applications can be installed by simply opening their file on the device, some (mainly WP8 .xap) are installed with an application deployment tool (requiring a PC). But generally speaking the practice of manually distributing apps is not very popular.
4- Both OSes have exploits, and both are updated. Windows Phone/Mobile has an advantage in practice, but only because most devices are 1st party and Nokia/Microsoft have great lifetime cycles on their products.
5- No, at least not computer programs (apps still contain a .exe binary, but most power users never touch or even see them directly)
6- It's all a personal opinion I like the fact 99% of apps support external storage out of the box, the clean UI, and the app gap isn't a big deal as everything I need to do is covered!
I'm a relative beginner too so some of the above may not be exact...
I'm going to assume you're asking primarily about Windows 10 Mobile (W10M), not the legacy Windows Phone (WP7.x and WP8.x) OS family. Although the underlying OS is very similar between WP8.x and W10M, the answers to some of your questions change.
Yes, all W10M devices can now be jailbroken/rooted (we don't have a single term for it right now; if you say "rooted" people will know what you mean). On W10M, there are two critical elements to rooting a phone: the ability to run unsigned (or at least non-MS-signed) code outside an app sandbox, and a way to launch an application with high privileges. We can now do that for all W10M devices, including WP8.x devices upgraded to W10M.
As others have said, the extensions are .xap (Silverlight / XNA apps, used for WP7.x and some WP8.x apps, still supported on W10M), .appx (WinRT, used for W10M and some WP8.1. Used for "Universal" Windows [Phone] 8.1 and Windows 10 [Mobile] apps, such as W10's "Universal Windows Platform"), and .appxbundle (just a collection of .appx files and their various resources / requirements). As with .APK files, they are just ZIP archives and can be opened by 7-Zip or anything else that knows the format (unless they are DRM-encrypted, which ones from the Store often are).
Yes, W10M supports sideloading. It's actually easier to enable on W10M than it is on Android (it's an easily-found option in Settings). By default you're limited to 20 sideloaded apps at once, but there are ways to bypass that.
Against external attacks, W10M is extremely secure. There have been no easily-exploited vulnerabilities (like Stagefright for Android), so far as I know. The app store is also better curated that the Play Store, and you can fully control the privacy settings of individual apps. Also, unlike with Android, Windows phones continue getting updates long after release, especially if you use the free preview / Insider programs to get your updates before your OEM or mobile operator bother to approve them (which sometimes never happens, both on Android and Windows, but on Android the only way around that is to go with a custom ROM; on W10M Microsoft makes it possible to still get updates).
Very much depends what you mean. In one sense, yes, of course; all W10M executables (both system and app) are EXE files (.XAP files may contain only a DLL that is loaded by a system EXE; newer apps include their own EXE). EXEs intended for desktop PCs generally won't run, though, because they use the x86 or x64 instruction sets, and the phone uses the ARM (actually THUMB2) instruction set. These are completely different "languages", and ARM CPUs cannot understand x86 machine code without an extremely slow interpreter in the middle. Additionally, the phone does not support the "Windows desktop" user interface at all, so you can't run any graphical programs (except "immersive"/"Metro-style"/WinRT/whatever-they-re-calling-it-this-week) ones. Command-line interface programs can be run (if they're compiled for ARM processors, and the phone is jailbroken) but there's not (yet) any translation layer for running x86 apps, even command-line ones, on the phone.
A more consistent UI across phones. Better control over when apps run and what they do (which often gives better battery life). Much better update support, even for "unsupported" phones. Pretty good performance even on really low-end phones; a cheap Windows phone will run much better than a cheap Android phone. Better security. Higher-end Lumias have some of the best cameras ever put in phones. Continuum for Phones (connect to a real monitor, and optionally USB keyboard and/or mouse, and run apps on a bigger screen). Easy access to pre-release builds, if you like trying out the bleeding edge features and such. Integration with all the Microsoft services (Exchange and Office365, Skype, OneDrive, etc.), although you can still use Google mail/calendar/etc. Tap-to-pay with high-end Lumias. Many apps can be used on both PC and mobile Win10 but you only need to pay once. Easy to re-flash your phone if something goes catastrophically wrong (commonly called "soft bricked", i.e. you can't even factory reset anymore), although they don't get into that state any more often than Android phones. Specs-for-specs, Windows phones are often cheaper than Android ones. Doesn't send a bunch of personal info to Google (of course, maybe you don't trust Microsoft any better, but at least their primary business isn't advertising).
... there are lots of reasons, just as there are lots of reasons to prefer iOS, or to prefer Android. Without more info about what you find important in a phone, it's hard to guess what stuff you'd care about.
