Is the Desire actually any good?

I have been looking to replace my iPhone 32GB 3GS with a Desire but the more I read about the Desire on this and other forums the more it looks like a bad idea due to some very iffy limitations / flaws / bugs.
So has any one made this particular leap and if so how do you find the Desire compares to the iPhone and will I find I can be disappointed for a lot less than £400!

But really...what did you think you would read in a forum? Here's one for you, go check out the iPhone help and support forum and come let me know how many postal are morning but praise and support.
Which particular "limitations" are putting you off, and if you've invested money on apps and media, why don't you just wait in the 4th iPhone?

I have just come from the HTC HD2 (very popular/top of the range etc) to the HTC Desire and must say the Desire is 1000x better.
Not one flaw at all, I come to this website as a matter of habbit as I actually have no issues whatsoever, in fact is surprises me how many problems people here are experiencing.
10/10 from me, I can see why this has been voted the number one phone in the world.\
I agree though if you can wait, it is very likely that the new iPhone will be the No.1 phone on the market, again.

can't compare most forums with one as xda which is a tad more technical and nitpicking. Regarding limitations you surely have a lot less than the iPhone. at the moment I can't say I find any major flaws and very few minor ones

My wife is having Iphone and this is my first android phone. I had more than 10 different WM phones. Never wanted to have anything else. Now I have Desire, and to be honest this phone is 10 light years ahead of any wm phone.
Closest thing to it is Iphone, but number of apps available for Desire is amazing.
Biggest selling point is of course social network integration, similar to Palm's Pre phone.

The Desire is the best phone I've owned (comparing it to the Nokia E61, HTC TyTN, HTC Touch HD, Samsung Omnia i900, Samsung Omnia HD i8910, SE Satio and some others I've forgotten).
The fact that you see so many comments here complaining about this and that is evidence to the fact that this phone has experienced massive sales and there's a good mix of experienced and unexperienced smartphone (and Android) users. It also means that people are being honest about their experiences by not sticking their heads in the sand, and the critical approach will lead to improvements, both from HTC and from the user community.
Look at the pace of posts here, too. Compare it with the pace in the X10 section. The sheer activity here is in itself one of the huge advantages of the phone.
For me, the biggest upsides of the Desire are the speed and Sense. The only things I'm reserving judgement for is the quality of the photos (after all, I'm coming from the Samsung i8910 with an excellent camera) and the lack of call recording (which is an Android 2.1 issue not limited to the Desire, but also hopefully something that will be sorted either in future Android versions or beforehand). Otherwise, this thing is the closest I've ever seen to an all-around excellent smartphone.

I have owned tens of devices, a lot of htc, nokia, blackberry, motorola (including milestone), couldn't bear to be an iphone owner but the Desire is pretty awesome. Best phone i've had to date bar none.

This very informative reply has defiently made me have the desire next.
After watching all the comparason vids on YouTube, ie - HD2 vs htc desire, and others.
Reading all the tech specs on both devices, Reading all the topics on the subforums here and over on the HD2 threads.
I can now see the desire is a very cool piece of kit.
I look forward to owning one.

I have my desire for 3 days now and it is excellent however...... mine came on Orange contract and it was crippled with Orange junk from the start. After a complete weekend of fiddling about and altering settings I still couldn't get onto my wifi router. Google Talk was missing and other Orange imposed glitched. I have now installed a different unbranded rom (details elsewhere in this forum) and everything is working exeptionally well, smooth, fast, brilliant.
No stylus required and no more little X's to click.

I have also iPhone 3GS, and what I can say is generally Desire is better than iPhone 3GS, at least for me.
iPhone is still better for multimedia player, mostly due to the quality of the speaker. Also, in term of stability, iPhone is a little bit better than Desire with stock ROM. But for other things, I prefer Desire, and I'll be patiently waiting for the "better" ROM for this pretty thing.
btw... if you came from 3GS, you might be a little disappointed with Desire's speaker quality.

You have understand that most people come to the forum and post are usually the one that has the problem. The one that has no problem using the device doesn't even bother coming on.

I have been waying up which device I should keep as they are both great devices.
In terms of speed, I can't really see much difference between the 3GS and Desire. Maybe the Desire is slightly faster.
The screen on the Desire however, is way better than the 3GS. The black on the Desire is real black. If you compare the colours from Desire to 3GS the Desire will win every time.
The interface on the Desire wins hands down compared to the 3GS. Iphone interface is plain boring now.
It's the media player quality where I am stuck. On my iphone, every single song has album art (1400+ songs) yet on the Desire only around 60% of tracks have album art. I know how to fix it but it's a painstaking task which I don't really have the time to do..
I also wish the Desire would list the Alphabet in each list in the media player so you can just click on a letter rather than having to first scroll a little bit and then touch the slider.
The Desire sound quality is good providing you are using decent headphones. If it was louder, I'm sure it could complete with headphones to the iphone. However the loud speaker is crap. Not much more can said about that. That isn't a deal breaker for me.
Apps, face it apple has heaps and heaps (alot are crap). But for me, volume isn't the issue. It's quality. I'm sure though give it time and the apps on the android market will get better so this isn't a huge issue either.
I'm going to wait until I can re-jail break my iphone and until the Desire is 'rooted' so I can can get the best out of both devices and then make a decision.

For album art - try the '3' music player from the market.. its pretty neat and will cycle through your albums and download album art for them..
very handy feature.. i dont think it embeds the art in the ID3 tags.. but it displays the art fine..

Thinking about buying a HTC Desire..questions first though!

Hey guys, i'm looking to buy a phone in the near future, and have 3 options in my price range (a trade in for my Touch HD with a broken memory card slot..). I'm looking at the Nokia N900, HTC Desire or iPhone 3G (not 3GS).
I'm heavily swayed towards the desire - the screen looks amazing, the build quality looks good..and it runs Android which I've wanted for a while..
Now I don't actually have an internet bolt-on with my contract (I am an O2 UK Customer), so browsing isn't the most important feature, though I do regularly use available Wi-Fi connections. I'm guessing in that respect, the N900 is the one to go for?
Moving on...operating systems. Anyone had experience with Maemo? (N900 operating system). What is it like? Does it hang or crash much..i'm coming from Windows Mobile 6.1 so I know how annoying it can be having to constantly restart your mobile phone.
One of, if not THE most important things to me is the music player. My iPod got stolen, so i've been using my Touch HD for a while now, and while the quality is okay, the music player drains the battery something crazy..whats the HTC Desire like with say 3-4 hours music playing on average a day, and moderate telephony (mostly SMS, with a few phone calls)? Anyone had experience with the N900? From reviews i've read that the iPhone 3G does well here..but alot of people I know who own one, don't agree..but they've had their iPhones a long long time, and use alot of applications..their batteries could well just need replacing.
Anything else anyone wants to comment to help my decision? In looking at reviews HTC Desire seems to come up top..but how does it relate to the average user? I do occasionaly engage in some geeky activities with my mobile phone...but it's more important to me as just that - a Mobile Phone.
Any views are welcome, I look forward to hearing your replies!

Non biased you won't get a lot of love here for iPhone!
I've been using my desire very heavily since I got it a month ago (usually bored of things before 30 days but this thing is just amazing) and the battery is pretty good. I charge it every night anyway but thats mainly because I have it running white noise to help me sleep (really works). I would say if I used it the same as I used to use my touch hd then it would probably last me 2 to 3 days. Also dont forget that you can carry a spare battery with the desire and you can't with the iPhone. Spare batteries are pretty cheap, usually less than 20gbp.
I play a lot of music on it and think that the whole music experience is very good. Some people say that the volume is not loud enough but I find that with decent headphones its perfect for me on about 80 to 90%. Played through my car stereo it sounds fantastic. Not had a lot of experience with the iPhone music interface but the desire one does everything I want it to and if I need more there are plenty of aps that can replace the default player.
If you really are a geek then Android really is the only option. There are so many ways to waste your time on the desire its frightening. In the last month I have barely touched my desktop and that very rare for me.
As far as WiFi access goes the desire is permanently connected to my router. I do have mobile net too but only use that when out and about.
If your choice was between desire and iPhone 3gs I would still choose the desire. You are choosing between desire, iPhone 3gs (can't comment on the other one I have no experience with it) then I can't see any competition really.
Android gets better and better and is still very young.

2-3 days?! My Touch HD only goes for about a day...then again...i've abused the battery by leaving it on charge overnight...can't do the battery any good I suppose!
Volume isn't an issue, I own a portable amplifier (PA2V2..search it on eBay). On a side note, it's highly recommended to buy a portable amplifier.. I've not seen my music the same way since!
Thank you zzleezz..I think i'm pretty much decided already now! Apps and geeky goodness is what I look for in a phone haha..
I think now it's just between N900 and the Desire, though I already know I'm going to choose the Desire haha... I'm just one of those people who like to know for definite before they invest!
Also..as a newbie to Android, are there a lot of free apps? I am but a lowly student! The on-line Android App store won't let you check..you have to browse it from an Android Phone to see it properly..

I recently just got a HTC Desire and my girlfriend has a Nokia N900.
I have never seen my girlfriend's N900 crashing but there was a bit of slowdown when a few GBs of songs are transferred into the phone. It was alright after a reboot. For multimedia, I think I would say N900 is the best. It has got good speakers and camera.
The hardware keyboard is pretty nice as well.
However, I don't like the resistive touch screen. I find it really hard to use compared to capacitive touch screen.
Battery life on N900 is pretty good. Perhaps better than the Desire.
For operating system,
I see Maemo as something in between Symbian and Android. There are some similarity between them.
FOr the HTC Desire,
I've only had it for 1 day+ but I'm loving it.
Battery on Desire is definitely better than my previous HTC HD2.
Everything is smooth and fluid. Installing/uninstalling apps never take more than 5secs each, which you don't see in N900 or Windows mobile.
I never use my phone as a mp3 player as I have an Ipod classic. So I can't comment on that.
Never had an Iphone before. Can't comment on that as well.
In all,
unless you really really like a hardware keyboard, better speakers, slightly longer battery life, I would suggest you skip the N900.
unless you are really an Iphone fan, I suggest you skip iphone as well.
Do some research on HTC Desire's bugs, shortcomings, disadvantages.
If you can live with that, I would suggest you get the Desire.
Since it has got better specs than the other 2 phones as well.

What about the motorola milestone if you want a hardware keyboard and android?

what is this stuff with white noise to sleep?

Thats a constant noise which may remind you of Rain, its helpful ti block other noises if you want to take a nap...even if it's loud, YouTube wont find it disturbing, you'll rather find it peaceful and calming

If you want a multimedia phone and you are not willing to geek around it you should go for the iPhone. As an ex iphone user i would say that it's a perfect user-friendly, foolproof phone, which would hardly leave you on the road without multimedia (of course if you don't thinker it much, it's software is quite fragile). But that's just it - iPhone is only for multimedia (at least for me). Most of the apps are just plain copy of another app on the appstore and they sux. I've found just 1-2 which i liked much (one RISK clone and a Google analytics app).
But if you want a phone, with a bit more power, to be able to do stuff you are used on your pc (if you use pc), then go for the Desire. I had it for a week now and I could say that it blows away the iPhone for me. Wouldn't go back apple's way again ... (well if they don't release a free blowjob accessory for iPhone,pod,pad... ))
Also if you go with iphone, forget easy management of songs, but you already know that from your ipod (as the big difference here is that for managing songs on iPhone, you NEED itunes, it's not detectable as flash-drive).

Search for white noise on the market, there is a paid one and a free one. Free one does fine for me, rain sound on low and I sleep like a baby

I even disagree that the iPhone is good as a multimedia phone.
I think there's nothing easier than just copying music onto the device, the Desire will put it into your library within seconds (or less). That's soooo much easier than having to go through iTunes (which, IMO, is a virus and you can't avoid it if you use an iPhone).
There are great media players for Android that are much better than the iPod app on the iPhone (the stock one is okay also, but there are really good ones on the Market, like MixZing). Alternative players are forbidden on the iPhone anyway, whereas you have a choice of great players on Android.
And that brings me to my next point: On the iPhone, unless you jailbreak it (which brings new annoyances), you can't have alternative players, you can't play any other formats than Apple's (whereas on Android, you can play pretty much anything with the built in players or an app from the Market).
I think there's not much more to say. You've used Windows Mobile, that means you know about all the possibilities an open system gets you. It's the same with Android, you can do pretty much anything you like.
What's not the same is that unlike Windows Mobile, Android just works. It's smooth, it's stable, it doesn't annoy you like WinMo does.
That said, I think there can only be one answer: Get the Desire.
I also just recently switched over from WinMo and I'm amazed by this phone. I also had an iPhone some time ago, and it really can not compare to the Desire in any way.
Everything that the iPhone does, the Desire does as well - and better - and most importantly, it does sooo much more... I wouldn't say it does more than Windows Mobile, but at least it does not annoy you.
It's like the combination of Windows Mobile and the iPhone: It just works fast, smooth and stable like an iPhone, but it does much much more like Windows Mobile.

I've noted the problems on the software and syncing.
iPhone can play aac, mp3, wav which ... in my opinion are ... let's say most used formats. I can hardly see myself playing flac on the phone
As for the iPhone as media device - may be you have missed the part to feel the phone as a whole without jerking around with external players. I can say that iPhone's ipod is one of the best multimedia players (in means of organizing) music. As for the Desire it's right next to it. If I can represent it in numbers iPhone's iPod is 100% and desire's (stock) is 99.8%.
So once again - if you are an user who wants just to use the stuff, and not worry about some hidden "features" here and there, you should go for the iPhone, but you would loose all the customization that Android gives you.
If you want to have control to make your phone, really YOUR phone, then definitely go for Desire! It's THE phone I can barely leave it out of sight, just because i love to look at it soo much. *inlove* ^^

I've now had my Desire for at couple of weeks, and I think it is a fantastic smartphone
One of the great things about Android is, that it just works out of the box, while giving you a rich user experience as well as a very high level of customization. As a longtime WinMo user myself I was a bit sceptical in switching to Android, but have not regreted it once since. One of the things that really maid my day was the efficiency and easyness of the Facebook and Google Account synchronization I have never been able to achieve on WinMo. Android has a beautifully designed GUI, all the way throughout the system, which was one of the main selling aspects of the iPhone, and in my opinion was entirely missing on WinMo (different interface in all apps, the quick transition between modern cool graphics layer to Win 95 like sms interface and so on). One real advantage of Desire (and any almost any phone in my opinion ) over the iPhone is of course the freedom you get by not being limited to do everything through iTunes and having free access to the phone's memory.
As for the phone itself I can say that the battery life is satisfactory, you can't really expect more from such a feature packed phone, I have personally developed a pattern where I charge my phone every night, so it has never been a problem for me. There are however some things you can do if you want to get a longer battery life. These are things such as turning the background data off, installing an automated taskkiller which periodically kills the unnecessary apps running in the background, turning off the location service (the phones manages the GPS power state), turning off WiFi etc... Android runs fluently, on the 1 GHz Snaprdagon CPU, actually noticably faster if you compare it with the HTC Legend.
I have tried to use the phone as a media player for a day (I usually use my Sony Walkman) and I can say that the battery life is reasonable, while the built in music player is fast and intuitively simple (I still haven't found how to add a song a playlist in Windows Media Player ), however one thing the player lacks is an equalizer. The phone is great for watching youtube or other online video (Flash works smoothly), the sound from the built in speaker is however not of the best quality. iPhone's or any Sony Ericsson's W series speakers are better.
So my general verdict here is: go get the Desire, you will not regret it

Nonsense... The phone knows when to stop charging, in fact most modern phones charge to 100% then completely stop charging until it drops down to 95% then charges back to 100%, etc.

Ok here's my simple explanation:
If you don't want/can't spend that extra day to learn how your phone works and how powerful it is and you don't care about getting into a closed ecosystem and pay 20-30% more for the same (actually maybe less) features, do get an iphone.
also if you care mostly about stylish appearance do get an iphone.
Otherwise get any other smartphone.

I think you'd be foolish to get anything other than an iPhone. It just works. The sound quality on the desire is pretty bad in my opinion. Appears that listening to music is pretty high up on your agenda? Your speakers may make it louder but the quality just ain't there. Plus you wanna use it as a phone. Another reason for getting an iPhone. You don't want missed calls that go straight to answerphone right? The aerial stack on the desire is pretty poor in my opinion. Furthermore many people have trouble with the desire switching from 3g to H to E pretty much constantly even when the phone is not moving. And many people it appears have to reboot there phones to get Internet connected. These latter issues don't effect everyone but they do effect many. I love my desire for many reasons. But I don't think it will suit your needs by the sound of it.

Enggg???? I don't agree with these comments at all; i don't know about the loudspeaker 'cause i don't use it but sound quality through my own earphones is just as good as my i-pod so sound quality is NOT an issue. I often listen to music and the player apps are really good, just as good as i phones and the ability to just dump music onto sd card (even straight from internet or bluetooth or wirlessly from pc) is very comfortable and handy!!
No probs at all with internet here, not one single one and anyway, from what i heard you're sticking to wifi so 3g is no issue for you anyway!
I've had an iphone, it was amazing when it came out but the desire has caught up and overtaken.
And the N900, mmmm, never tried one but from the vids i've seen on internet, it looks quite cool!

I don't even think its fair to compare the iPhone with the Desire. The Desire is so much more versatile, powerful, and customizable.
I use the device to watch youtube clips and movies and listen to Mp3. I think the sound quality is excellent. As I understand it you cannot multi-task on an iPhone? So you cannot surf and listen to mp3s? Also no flash on Apple. I can watch flash on my Desire, and its also due flash 10.1 which will be even smoother. iPhone will never see flash.

Dunbad, seems the Apple brainwashing worked on you
I never have problems with switching between wifi/HSDPA/3g its seemless. Only time I have a problem with internet is in the middle of Thetford Forest where I also have problems making voice calls as there is no signal
Aerial stack on my Desire is better than my old touch HD and also better than my wifes Legend.
Music quality is great, had a friends ipod touch next to my desire the other night and we played the same track through the same set of headphones for a perfect comparrison. The ipod was a lot louder, going into the range of being able to damage your hearing, the desire could get to the stage where it was just on the loud stage but nowhere near as loud as the ipod. Not a problem imo, and historically HTC have limited output on the headphones of their phones. On my old touch HD I was able to adjust the limit in the registry, im sure it will be only a matter of time before some bright spark shows us how to change the setting in android
I wonder what network the "many" people quoted above are on, might be worth finding out. I am on vodamoan (perfect signal, great coverage, bad 500m FUP on data).

The sound quality on the Desire is just fine. I have no issues with it. Android is an amazing moble OS. I have messed around with iPhones a bit... and I really don't get why people like the iPhone OS so much. In my opinion pretty much anything running Android is better then an iPhone. As for the n900... it was a very nice idea, but Maemo never went anywhere. Maemo is pretty much a dead OS. There is a new OS being made by Nokia/Intel called Meago I think it is. It's rumored that the n900 will get this if it comes out. By the time it does though, the hardware on Tue n900 which is already aged will be so far behind it would be pointless to get one. Android has a lot of useful apps so far, and its improving rapidly. It already has things that no other mobile OS does. Android is the way to go right now... and the Desire is one of the top Android phones. Nothing else is really too superior to it currently.

Coming from legend to desire....

Ok so I got a legend, freakin cool phone. Had the opportunity to upgrade to desire for free so of course I took it. Now don't get me wrong, of course the desire is a 'better' phone, but I cannot help but notice that build is soooo much better on the legend. Now most of you will say of course, it is aluminum, but it's not just that.
1) Probably the most annoying, the screen on the legend destroys the desire. It shouldn't on paper, but believe me it does. The pentile matrix vs no pentile matrix is abundantly clear.
2) I am terrified of dust getting under the screen because i can see the gap between the screen and phone and am constantly making sure I clear dust from it. On the legend the screen is sealed to the side of the phone.
3) Well obviously the materials aren't as nice, but I knew that would be the case in making the change so that one does not really count.
That being said, the desire is a powerful beast and I am looking forward to Froyo.
These might be interesting points to someone tossing up between the two phones. The legend was also blazingly quick, and unless you want to play the latest 3d games, it is probably fast enough for you. Still not sure if I did the right thing upgrading!

yeah i know what you mean about the pentile thing, i'm not surprised the legend screen looks better tbh

yea unfortunately i did not know about the pentile thing prior to changing. i am sure i would not have really noticed it i i didn't have the legend first, but dayom! the screen on the legend was crisp!

Yes I agree, legends actually a very good phone except one and only one problem which is the CPU...... it pushes legend to an edge that everyone turn to desire.
But hero and legend has actually a much better size and style which I love them so much.
Although I am using desire, lol.

HTC were so close to making literally the be all and end all of kick ass smart phones, desire components in legend body. Damn that would been sweet

Not with android family at least.
You can see the touch series that htc made for windows mobile. Well, initially, only some touch models and now all their wm devices are under the name Touch.
Hopefully, there is something like that to happen to their android product line.
And I'm really looking for the gsm versions of evo 4g and incredible. N1/desire power, legend design quality without mis-register multitouch issue on popular gsm network. I don't live in the US btw.

argh! i need to figure out in the next 2 days whether i want to change back to legend. if i am not going to be playing crazy games or using google earth, do you think the desire is overkill? the main thing i would be worried about with the legend is that it will lack the support of the desire as it is not a flagship model

I have the Desire and i loved it... Never got the chance to test Legend since i compared the two and have gone to the powerfull one, but...
I really dislike the physical buttons on the Desire. It bothers me that a touch device have so many physical buttons (they can be physical, but more integrated to the design like the Legend).
Also the speaker is very poor when making calls on speakerphone (but i think this is HTC regular) and the battery cover lacks some quality...
My eyes are really stuck on Legend - it is simply fabulous! Really really beautiful and made of aluminum, but i also heard that it makes wireless power go down a bit when compared to other non aluminum.
I've bought the Desire instead of the Legend mainly because of the power vs price and the wireless thing...
My advice is that you go for the one you like the most, since they are mainly the same, but the Legend is so dawn cool and beautiful and the Desire is a powerful beast! Which serves you best?

All right, have decided to keep the desire. Although this is probably more down to laziness than an actual well thought out decision. But if I decide I really want the legend then I can always sell the desire. Might do that if legend actually gets 2.2

Ok little bit of an update, just managed to get my desire side by side with my friends legend.
The colors on the legend look so washed out next to the desire! Doesn't even seem AOMED. In my memory legend screen was so much better but next to desire it did not compare.
Also legend felt pretty slow after using the desire for 2 weeks.
So in my opinion, the legend only wins out on form factor now. Glad I kept my desire, enjoying all the custom roms that are coming out!

Sorry if the mods think this question has been covered elsewhere but I don't think it has.
I currently have a Desire which has given me 18 months of solid use. I mainly use it for listening to podcasts on the loud speaker, email, Newsrob and Twitter. My main issues with it are the relatively poor battery (although alot better under CM7.1), tinny loudspeaker and the lack of memory for installing apps.
I really wanted a Galaxy Nexus until I started reading all the issues. Given that I want better battery life and a better loudspeaker would you get a Nexus or wait for something better to come along? Given that I'll be on a 24 month contract I'd be willing to wait 3 months

Honestly? I would love to tell you to buy the Nexus, but with all the issues at the minute (the volume ghost obviously being the main culprit) I would have to tell you to hang on to your Desire. At least until we get some kind of response from Google / Samsung letting us know what the problem is.
I was due to sell my Desire tomorrow, but I'm holding on to it for the time being as the Nexus is borderline unusable in low signal areas

I replaced my original HTC Desire with Nexus S ... and now Nexus S with Galaxy Nexus.
I hate the Desire, slow and small storage space.
Love my Nexus S, but ... I want a new toy !

Exactly the same issue....I have a desire too. I am contemplating the GS2 or Razr also...

If what you want mainly is a better battery life, then I would suggest getting an external battery pack. Likewise with speaker; get a portable external speaker. I highly doubt there are many phones out there that provide a very good internal speaker and when they do they are usually "media phones" that are not very useful for much else.
If you really don't want to carry all the extra gadgets around then I would actually suggest getting cheaper phones that are not top of the line. The problem is that top of the line phones just keep getting more powerful and battery-hogging while battery technology is just barely catching up, and you can see that all these new phones are barely getting through a day with heavy use.

I was just going to send it off to one of those online recycling places, one offered my £105 for it.
I still have the box and everything, so when it comes round to it I may try my luck selling it elsewhere. I can't see getting much more for it though, tbh.

Not sure I can be bothered with ebay and Mazuma will give £90 for a working Desire.
I've already got a 5000mah external battery and a portable speaker but they are hardly ideal to carry around permanently.
I'm definitely going to wait until the volume issue is sorted as the Nexus seems pretty unuseable at the moment

Thing is that you will have the same questions in another 6 months time.
My last Android phone was a Desire and I loved it, but sold it 10 months ago because I just use my iPhone more.
But dropped for the Nexus last week and its a real step up. Can't say its better than a GS2, and it does have some downsides, the battery being one of them. But I think this will hold you well for another 18 months.

I'm in the same boat.. gonna wait until google/samsung respond.
I'm only going to get nexus devices now though, as Motorola have annoyed me with the xoom and the UK firmware debacle - lesson learnt is always try to get as clean a device as possible.

It's a shame really, because I absolutely love the device (and ICS) - it's a big step up from my Desire. Everything is just so much faster!
I just couldn't recommend buying one with such a big issue hanging over it. Hopefully we should get at least some kind of response from Google / Samsung today, which might clear things up

My biggest worry is the bloody size of the GN. Saw a mock up of it in P4U and it did seem big. LOL.
That's going to be the deciding factor. Size.

I also have a Desire and its been a great phone for me, but fingers crossed tomorrow the postie will bring me a Galaxy Nexus.
I've held both the S2 and and GN, width wise they're the same, the GN is slightly taller. But I actually preferred the GN in my hand, it felt more solid due to it's metal construction inside therefore also making it very slightly heavier. The tapered curves also helped as it felt more comfortable to hold in comparison to the S2 which is a bit square.
The led notification is a big plus for me too.

Im also thorn between the galaxy s2 and the galaxy nexus. I have faith in the software issues being sorted out, but when it comes down to camera quality and what not, I'm leaning more towards the S2 atm. Especially because its quite a bit cheaper, while having better hardware in some aspects as well. Hm...

Just traded up from a desire to the nexus. Go for it ! No regrets at all.
Battery bettery than desire.
Screen is fantastic.
Sound via headphones much better than desire.
Feels substantial (like my desire did).... more so than the gs2.
One thing i miss is the optical trackpad but not a dealbreaker.
I posted a thread about my thoughts moving upbfrom desire.

always found the loudspeaker on my desire quite quiet. nexus seems louder although not as loud as my wifes experia.
headphone quality blows the desire away ! especially with some (built in) equaliser tweaks !

wilbur-force - what equalizer? Built in? I don't see anything...?
On topic though, I've upgraded from the Desire which I've had for 18 months to the Galaxy Nexus and I love it! I've not had any probs with the sound fault being talked about, so I can only say from my perspective, it's not a fair reflection on the phone.
The screen however, looks gorgeous, so much clearer and detailed than the Desire. And the speed? Brilliant! I had apps on my Desire which I thought were running slow due to internet connections.. I realize now that it was the phone. Everything runs so quickly on the Nexus. I also love being able to download all the apps I want without having to juggle what little memory space I have left.
The sound is also great on the Nexus. Through headphones (I use Sennheiser CX680i with my phone), the music's loud, clear and sharp. The loud speaker, though nothing particularly special, does seems louder and clearer than the Desire which I always thought was a bit muffled.
The interface looks good, much smarter and modern than Android 2.3, in part because of the screen quality, but all the layouts have been updated and made to look nicer, and somewhat like the new style of the Google websites. Only problem I do have is sometimes when trying to press an app by pressing the bottom of the screen, I catch the home button instead. Minor problem and it's something I'll get used to, but I do miss my buttons, especially the search button!
Overall, well chuffed with it. It looks good, feels good, and it's great to use. I'd recommend upgrading

Just one more thought to bare in mind, I'm finding a few apps I had on my Desire aren't available off the Market for the Nexus.
I assume that this is just a temporary niggle till devs catch up, but something else to consider so early on in the phones life cycle

I can't get over the size of it.... might have to head to a shop and have another hold to convince myself.

i so love my GNEX i sold my 4S because its a lot better.. but when it comes to volume i cant accept the fact that its very weak and considering its a google flagship device, i dont know if google or samsung decided on this kind of speaker..im thinking of samsung put a crap speaker so it will not be competitive againts the next SGS3..in comparison with the 4s it its no where near, 4s is two time louder and has the best speaker in all mobile..thats the only short coming i have on this device, all in all its still the best smartphone around now..

It's a Samsung issue I've read quite a few posts similar to yours

it's true the speaker isn't as loud but it's not the worst either. If you've ever had an htc device you'd see that Sammy is the middle ground. at the end of the day, there are so many benefits to this phone that the few drawbacks aren't dealbreaksrs. just a matter of getting used to the fact that the speaker is satisfactory instead of unusually loud

I agree, the volume on this device sucks. The speaker is really weak. However don't lose hope, there are programs you can use to vastly improve it, for one... Volume+. It's in the market.
As for the 4s having "the best speaker in all mobile"... you may want to look into a little company called RIM. As the 4S is not even half as loud as any blackberry that I've come across. They are second to none in this department. This is a particular pet peeve of mine. Barring Rim, it seems like every smart phone manufacturer out there has totally forgotten that these things are "supposed" to be cell phones FIRST. They keep pushing the limits of screens, cameras, cpus, yet they all keep forgetting about basic things like call quality & battery life. Things that "should be important", for a mobile phone. And unfortunately, the vast majority of the public is to blame for this... With their stupid megapixel & benchmark penis envy. Very frustrating to me...

Does volume + actually increase the volume? Or is it just like the app someone up there mentioned?

I miss Nokia when they always put a pair of stereo speakers on their phones.
I like how my mom's optimus one had the loudspeaker and earpiece as one. When you play videos the sound is directed towards you instead of coming out from the back of the device.

Buy the volume+, not the free one (free goes up to volume 4).In settings of the volume+ select for speaker volume 6 or 7.You ll see the difference.You can also do it for headphones

oh yes RIM has good sound on their speaker too i used bb9900 before, iphone 4s is 2x louder than the ip4.. i think gnex has the same speaker as the SGS2, im thinking that this is only because of ICS..

Volume+ definitely increases the volume properly... I have mine at +8 and it's night and day compared to how it was at stock - I was seriously considering returning the phone as I simply couldn't hear the notifications and ringer unless it was in a quiet room.
And you can get the full version of Volume+, free from the author's site - http://androidaudiohacks.com/?page_id=2 so it's worth a try anyway!

Similar, but a bit off-topic, how would it affect my experience if I rooted the GN (for specific apps to work) but kept stock ICS? Would I still receive official google updates, and would there be any difference anywhere?
