I am trying to find a relatively simple and cheap method to build what could be considered a night stand for my phone, and I am fairly confident that I am not the only one. Is anybody out there looking for ways to build such a device (even in passing)?
A member of the t-mobile forum recently ordered a stand from www.ezestand.com, which they are going to test out. The website mentions that the stand is not compatible with the droid incredible in horizontal mode, though. That seems like an issue that could plague the mytouch as well.
Another option I have been looking at a bit would be to use a business card stand. Something along the lines of the following stand could work...
http://www.amazon.com/Rolodex-Disti...MH/ref=sr_1_13?ie=UTF8&qid=1294169822&sr=8-13
Because the ends are open, the width of the phone would not be an issue. There is also a small base under the stand, and depending on what it is made out of, one could conceivably run a wire under the stand and cut a hole for the micro usb plug. It would be best to use a right angle micro USB, though.
Simple, cheap, and compatible with any phone.

LOL brilliant
While that is very neat, I don't like the idea of having something permanently on my bedside table that looks like garbage.
For what it's worth, I stopped by office max and they had that exact business card holder that I linked to in stock. It was cheaper there (about 6 bucks), and the bottom is made of a solid piece of some kind of particle board (as opposed to hollow plastic). That makes it a bit trickier, but I can imagine how a right angle micro usb plug could be worked in through the back piece of metal and a little shelf could be put in the bottom to hold the bottom of the phone up.
so i have been thinking of doing a car dock for the mytouch 4g, since I successfully modded the oem desk dock to use the three pins on the side..
well, I have a alpine blackbird navigation I bought awhile back and it had the car dock for it and I was thinking may be I can do something with this since I hardly use or I lost/broke the blackbird...
but I here are pics I took:

I was thinking of switching or joining the mytouch to the alpine dock:?
let me know what you all think?
Interesting idea. From the video I have seen of the official dock (primarily yours), it seems like it is quite a snug fit. I am not sure how you will be able to recreate that, but I bet that dock would work fantastically.
App Launching On Power
Im not sure if the official dock launches apps, but if you want app launching Check Out "powerwifi" from the android market, or you can go here http://sites.google.com/site/scadaguru/power-wifi

I have been thinking of doing something like this myself as well... I even drew up some quick ideas and made a cardboard prototype...I tried to design it where the angle may be adjusted....idk..
hmmmm
i had a thought about this also. what if we found a case that fit the phone and cut it down to spec, mounted it, then wired it up. i was even thinking about using the case to mold some others so i could make multiple ones that i might like

That's awesome man !!!
I'll never buy stand, now that I know I can make my own
+rep
nice stand but i'm more interested in the clock you have on the screen. is that an app?
I believe he is using Kaloer Clock (Search it in Market). Is that correct?
Yeah, it's kaloer clock....i have it set to turn on automatically whenever i charge the phone. It switches orientation too and allows you to set the brightness level. Makes for a great bedside clock.
Nice stand. Huh, I may follow the directions to construct one.
As for Kaloer clock, I found that it made the SE screen lock disappear, no matter which setting I used with the clock. I can only get the screen lock back only after I go to settings - applications - and force close Kaloer clock.
Did that happen to you and if so, have you found a solution.
I made one from Lego.. even managed to build in a little android!!.

gr00vy0ne, can you tell me where you got the seethrough protection case for your x10? maybe give me a link on ebay? tnx
btw. cool stand, i'll definitely make one
For people curious about the case that I have in the photos it's this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Soft-Plastic-Ba...ewItem&pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item45f27d59a9
I bought it from this seller as well.
I wonder if anybody here could make a DIY car mount for x10?hehe
men,its cool,i like it
Here's a stand made from only ONE business card:
The best part of this is that you can unfold the business card, put it in your wallet and use it when you need to!
And yes, I do work for Fido (Canada Wireless Company owned by Rogers) but removed my name from the card
Thanks for sharing Tri3Dent! It looked pretty decent!
Even more stable than the stand that came along with my set. Gonna make one!
beautiful stand!
heres my wall mount stand i needed. i use mine as a clock/alarm, so i wanted it someplace where i wouldnt lose it. hope the pics work.
took me about 45mins with my mitre saw and dremel, threw some old left over car paint and clear coat onto it lol.
does the job though super sturdy too.
tell me what you think!
Ptesmoke
EDIT: lol just looked at the last pic (taken by htc diamond) its not off level!! theres some weird shadows cast there somehow, anyways yea its level just like the shelf above it i promise hahaa!! I should maybe grab a side pic of it to show how i have it angled back at about 15 degrees....

Very nice. I would stongly recommend a plastic type of card as paper might not be strong enough (at least mine)
Dunno if this helps anyone but u cud always steal a stand off someone with one of those nokia comes with music phones (5800?). They fold out and fit our x10s perfectly.

I got this off ebay...

The photo show it as a vent mount but it's actually a windscreen mounted suction cup style one..
It's spot on...

I doubt they would have anything for the Galaxy Phones since the Jack and USB connection in that case is normally on the TOP of the phone (like the Captivate)
You'd have better luck modding and building your own. Considering the phone doesn't do upside down portrait at all oddly. I doubt it would be nearly anything like the iPod style docks since Apple did have the brilliance (the few times I do give them a compliment) of putting their major connector on the bottom of their mobile and portable products.
Although should such a product exist, I would be interested in seeing such thing maybe even purchasing one.

Mine does upside-down portrait just fine. (Though I think I'm quoting the wrong post, since I don't see the upside-down statement in your post.) (Nevermind, I see it now. Good, I am quoting the right person.) You have to go in display settings and enable 180-degree rotation or something like that. Some roms don't have that option, though so YMMV.
Samsung has done some good horizontal desk docks for it (once you register your captivate with samsung, it shows you a crapload of nice accessories) so it probably wouldn't be too hard to make one.
Easiest design would be to buy one of the horizontal desk docks, a small 3.5mm speaker set from Radio Shack, and drill a small hole in the dock to plug them in, then attach the speakers to the dock.
Could be done for under $50 if you use the Samsung official dock, way less if you use one from ebay or amazon.
Get the kind that is just an empty drawer and a headphone cord. Phone's right side up and you've got speakers.
Something like this:

So I'm looking for a car dock. I want something that can mount to my windshield and rest at just below the dash level..excuse my crude photoshop, but I think showing you all what I mean would probably result in a better set of suggestions.

So that position, while it looks pretty low is only about 8-10 inches from the windshield. Id rather avoid a cluttered dash mount/pad. I'm also not crazy about the idea of the air vent mounts as that doesnt seem like a very long-term or stable platform. As for the audio out, are there any docks with an audio out...basically giving the user the ability to run both audio and power to one side of the device?
well why not one of these?
buy a longer windshield mount once you see if it is the center pin style or the 4 pin model?
that is what im planning on doing

I had a windshield mount but when making sharp curves or adjusting it, it would slide off. (Sliding off would weaken the suction but pulling on it was okay...
if you want an easy and low key to mount, your EVO, I would invest in an extra battery cover that has been modified with magnets, then place some magnets on your dashboard (if placed properly they might look like part of the dashboard). Just switch at the beginning and end of your trips.
This is the nicest one I have found yet with the most features and a great price.

that is a great price.. but i dont see power/audio... which OP was asking...
A dock with audio is impossible unless it has Bluetooth built-in. The only audio output pins on the Evo are in the headphone port.
No it don't it just leaves the port open so you can hook up to it but its nice it has the length and a nice feature I like is it keeps the camera open while still docked

So, I'm still waiting for the official Samsung dock with the functional 3-pins. Until then, this is my temporary solution...
Velcro Brand Removable Picture Hangers have a unidirectional hook which makes removing the phone really easy as you just slide it upwards.
The product comes with the hook side and the loop side. The loop is supposed to go on your wall (car) and the hook is supposed to go on the object you're hanging (picture frame) or in this case, the phone. If you put the hook on the phone though, it's going to catch on your pocket, your jacket, your sweater, etc., so I reversed it and put the loop in my car and the loop on the phone.
The hook can go anywhere. I just put it over my CD player because I never use it.

If you're going to put the hook in the car, make sure you reverse the directions so Velcro is now written upside down and the arrows point down also.
Loop patch on the back of the phone.
Hang it.
Voila
To remove, just slide it straight up. Comes right off.
I've actually been using this solution for about 2 years starting with my Droid X (instead of the official car dock) and later Droid Charge. My brother has it in his WRX, my wife has it in her Outback and I've had it in a Tacoma and most currently, a 328xi.
crap...these images are way too big...
Edit: Fixed
Looks good. However with my car there will be no place for it. I'll keep looking for solutions.

Thanks. Out of curiosity, what kind of car do you have? All you need is a few inches of flat real estate somewhere on the dash within your arms reach.
So does this leave sticky residue on the back of my phone? So everytime I take my phone off and want to make a call everyone will see a huge sticky pad?
Nope, removable silicone adhesive. Won't damage painted drywall either.
not bad at all... I need to figure out something, I'm really shocked that they were able to build such a beautiful phone but can't release a decent dock for either desk or vehicle that easily allows us to charge our phone and plug in a audio cable... They need to get it together and provide some accessories so i can give them more of my money!
I'm a long time lurker on XDA and appreciate all the work the developers have done on all the great ROMs. I recently dropped my SGS II and decided to replace it with a GSM Galaxy Nexus and must say I love it.
My son decided to use the damaged SGS II and no longer needed his Nexus S. I noticed the desktop dock he had looked close to the curvature of the GNex. The micro USB connector was about an 1/8" low and needed to move back about the same. I went to work on dis-assembling the dock to make the modifications. Below I have a few pics but I didn't document the actual mod process, if there are any questions let me know.
The back cover of the dock will pull off with work and there are a few screws holding everything together. Once these are removed the dock will pop apart at the seam on the front of the dock. Modding the micro USB is actually pretty easy. A larger opening will be needed to move the connection towards the back and top of the dock.
The GNex will fit in the dock without any other modifications but there will be a small gap between the dock and the phone on the connector side. I wanted a more factory look and decided to thin the plastic a little so the GNex would fit snuggly next to the dock with no gaps. I did this with a fin grit sand paper and a buffing wheel on a dremel tool.
These docks can be found as cheap as $5.00 on Amazon. I purchased this dock at Best Buy for $20.
Hope these help explain what I did.

Shot of how nicely the GNex fits in the dock.
You can see that the phone is charging in the dock.
Modded the opening for the micro USB connector.
A little more sanding and the dock would look factory.
These were taken with the phone while working on the dock.
The bracket at the top holds the micro USB connector in place. A few mods were needed to make it fit the GNex.
Nice!
i just ordered one of these docks from amazon for 7 bucks used. hopefully i can mod it successfully so i can dock my galaxy nexus like u did. very good job though modding it.
Edit: I screwed up my dock bad so it no longer works lol. Oh well. Now I know why I don't do stuff myself lol. Plus I didn't have the drill thing u had.
