[Q] make image on external drive available for wallpaper? - Bada Software and Hacking General

Hi my friends!! Great section!!!
So.. i see that if wanna use a picture that is on my sdhc card (external memory) how desktop wallpaper, system auto make a copy of it in the memory phone.. so.. do you think that we can set system to use directly the picture on sd?
thanks a lot

Unfortunately you cant as far as i know
It makes sence that you cant if you think about it
Upon restart the phone starts up and only after Bada was completely started up it initializes the SD card.
Also if it has to read from the SD card the whole time to see your background i think it will impact your battery life aswell as internal memmory should be faster than the sd card aswell
Just my thoughts on it

yes, maybe it's true.. but you know that many of the picture that we can use how wallpaper, are photos or image in high resolution.. and they are heavy!!
A solution will be an automatic resize and a little crop of them, and then, a copy over phone memory!!
Another problem is that theese image, are copied in the root of the phone memory.. this isn't a problem until these images aren't too much.. but when they grow up.. we have a root folder that it's almost full!!!

Ye true
I just delete the images im not using as background
You could browse to your phone memory and just create a folder move it in there and then when you browse to it select the one on the phone so that its not in the root folder
Having 300mb of pics as backgrounds is kinda pointless tbh but thats just my opinion. Thats why you have a 8gb SD card

its fairly possible via usb master-slave...but u need to hack bada and then assign it master and any external drive as slave.... but u have to provide power to external usb...so that it can work... just like Nokia N8.... thats what they do.... but this is a dream on bada

hello frnds
themes are also there on sd card anly
compared to a wallpaper theme is of more size ,, and also the theme has to be applied to the entire UI
so, if theme is not copied to sd card , then y to copy wallpaper or ringtone or sms tune

Ideal solution (in my opinion) would be that Bada would keep only last 5 images in Internal Memory and delete older ones.

[Q]How can I extend the System storage (memory) ?

Hi,
as everybody have noticed Samsung has integrated into their firmwares 3 storage locations:
System storage (1GB)
USB storage (or internal SD card) (1.7GB)
SD card (or external SD card) (up to 32GB)
A way how to swap USB storage and SD card is already given.
Like most of you gamers have already noticed, the memory of the internal SD card is often too small to download big games (like NFL 2012, Real Football 2012, etc.)
I know there are ways how to swap or use apps to swap temporarily the directions.
But I want a permanent solution with full capability of storage usage.
So here is what I would like to do:
Change the storage to:
System storage (2,7GB)
SD card (up to 32GB)
So basically extend the system storage and delete the USB storage. Than swap the internal SD and external SD card.
Advantages:
Media Server will only have to search one direction(physical SD card)
Only 2 main directions
SD card direction IS a physical SD card.
SD card, if class 10, is quicker than the internal storage(for apps).
Hope someone can help.

Sounds like a good plan.....I never can understand the Samsung memory/storage layout..... even for app devs deciding on /sdcard as default data store.....Samsung just breaks defaults.
Has your plan been tried on any other Samsung model.....or other Androids with the same Internal/External layout??

I have been searching for quite some time. I have seen someone writing about a data.ex4 file which was 4GB big. But not sure what it was used for.
I'll dig a bit deeper into that :-D

Yes thats the plan :-D. But I have no clue about the internal restrictions of Android and the Samsung firmware.
I think if the extension of the system storage would work, than all we have to do is swap internal and external sd card. And keep the small internal(former internal sd card) partition unmounted.
BTW: My system storage has almost full. 850MB/1.07GB

I hve no idea too bro...can't help..
Many new devices around here use this three layer storage...
But,what I thought ,when we succes do this..there's no need to swap I think..

So I have searched and searched ...
Didn't come veeery far, but atleast found a thread with a similiar concern:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1398797
This is for the Galaxy Mini.
I asked the developer or thread starter, whether he can help us out.
Let's wait and see, hopefully he comes around.
EDIT: Doc_cheilvenerdi.org has replied, and is working on a solution. Hope it is going to work .

Only Problem is, if the game is bigger than the internal sd space, you won't be able to download to sdcard. Because the procedure is like this:
Download game to internal SD -> move downloaded files to external SD
So you SD card has to be always free, unless you want to use the swap temporarily.

Update
I am in contact with Doc_cheilvenerdi.org, so I just want to give you a small update of the more or less current status. It might inspire some other devs.
So this was the second to last message (obviously with the kind permission of Doc_cheilvenerdi.org):

I'm here!
From a full firmware I just figured out that we don't need Kernel source because the ext4 kernel modules are already inside the Stock kernels (really good news)...
Now I'm dealing with the AOSP mkbootimg tool, used to repack the boot image after tweaking it...
It seems that they use a slightly modified one (? it should not occurr)...
I find two main differences... the first one is Solved... I can patch the mkbootimg code myself to use it...
The second one is related to 2 hex pages (4096 * 2 byte) of code at the end of the boot image that I cannot handle...
...anyway I don't know how to handle it...
Actually I cannot test modded images myself (I don't own a I8150) and could be dangerous to ask somebody else to do it for me...
Two questions to you:
1) Your Galaxy does have a fixed partition table, right? just to exclude that those codes are sizes and addresses of system parts... (this could be easy for us)
2) can you post me the output of the command (from adb shell or terminal emulator)
# busybox ls -l /dev/block/
while you have the sdcard slotted in?
After that I can prepare a boot image smaller (and NOT tweaked yet) just to not overwrite the code "I don't know what it is"...
but it's up to you to test for it...
...maybe it could not work...
...I will couple the repacked boot image with the original one, anyway, just to revert easy to it in case of troubleshootings...
but I repeat... it's up to you...

Hey guys any news on this? I think another good reason for this is that it will hopefully increase the amount of ram available, at this minute I have 87 mb free And hardly any apps open. So any news on this as it would be really helpful?

As far as I understood this solution would let you better use your memory card and system/app space, but I don't think it would increase at all the amount of RAM available, unfortunately...
Anyway, yeah, keep us posted thanks!
hey THE-E
is thr any news abt this post cuz i really wanna extend my app size without having to swap memories or installing apps to external memory (all i wanna do is get 2.7 GB on 1 partition for app installation )

Unfortunately not. Not sure what the reason was, but there was a misunderstanding and after that there was no further reaction from the developer. I guess it was not possible.

how to transfer SD to new one?

With some programs installing partially to external SD card, how do I transfer them when I upgrade it to bigger size, when system files are invisible? My data files are easy, I just copy them to my laptop and then back to the new card, but invisible system files?
Better yet, how do I make them visible on Win7 laptop, as this is really, really annoying me beyond belief. I could be thinking the card is empty and format it, when it could have whole bunch system crap on it. I really don't feel like reinstalling 100 or so programs again, some of them paid.
You can use adb to pull all files/folders from old sdcard to laptop and push them back to the new one.

There are no programs/apps which use the external sdcard by default for installation purposes.
Now if you are talking about Apps2SD that's a different story, but that's something which
YOU have initiated, the actual programs/apps by default install themselves entirely in the
internal memory of the phone.
Good luck!

That is absolutely not true. Just downloaded game ARC Redux, App info says 37 MB internal, 521 MB ext SD card, right after install and I have not changed any installation settings nor move to SD (is there a setting where programs should install? I know developer can allow program to install on SD or not, is there such option for user?). Worst comes to worse I'll instal ADB, but there must be easier way. I remember I had some program that would show all invisible files in windows, can't remember what was it, maybe it would work. I can't believe I'm the only one having this dilemma.

Partition Sizes

Curious if anyone has modified the partition table on the device? With the System taking up 4 some gigs... seems silly not to shrink it down a bit for more app usage. Any thoughts on this one or am I just thinking silly on it?
I think the same but i found nothing. I flashed a debloated rom for the 10.1 and now have 1.2GB free on system parts. I used titanium backup to transfer some app from data to system but it's boring. But it's nothing compared to my MicroSD card memory

I did transfer some apps over as well, or in reality can remove them because they sit on the SD partition because of updates (really wish it would just update to system by default). I know moving some updates over just screws it up, let alone just moving screws up the icons on the desktop portion.
I don't have a de-bloated rom right now. The way I see it, its being used or wasted at this point. Apps don't seem to be slowing it down, though im sure a few are running in the background, but nothing that has hampered battery life like my previous Nexus 7 (2013). This seems to do much better at not wasting power. Guess im not being as picky as I use to with random apps chewing up space.
I would of jumped all over a 32GB edition from the get go. Paired with a 64GB SD card, its win win. Even now it is, just can't install everything I want to in 1 go since most apps still are stored locally on the main internal SD Partition and can't be transferred over. I can live with it, and im sure someone will figure it out. I know I use to do it with an old phone that had, next to no internal memory (a loong time ago). PITA to update, but well worth being able to use the phone.
You can use FolderMount [ROOT] to create a symbolic link between internal SD card and external to move your application.
For example if you want your google offline music on sdcard you can mount /sdcard/android/data/com.google.android.music on external sdcard.
It is possible to do it for every folder so it solves the problem :highfive:

Yeah just read into that. Thanks for the link so it reminds me.
Course, internal storage is always faster But for music/movies obviously SD Card just works fine with that.

[Q]Can DHD work without SDcard?

Hi, Recently i bought a new phone and my old one DHD is still working, i dont want to waste my DHD and leave it there.
So i decided to use them both together.
But my problem is i only got 1 SDcard. i would like my new phone to have the sdcard.
As a result my DHD dont have any sdcard, it can boot, but some app doesn't work(directly Force close).
I know that DHD has a little difference on the path of sdcard comparing to the new android devices.
My knowledge is
New android devices:
external sd < Which is the sdcard physically i have, named under storage\sdcard1
internal sd < which is partitioned from the internal storage of the phone, named under storage\sdcard0
DHD
just one folder named under storage\sdcard0
i consider it as the dhd devices think the external sd as an internal sd to work.
Hmmm. sorry for poor english.
Thanks
Yes. It will work. I suggest though that after flashing a ROM,to not download too many apps as this will take up your internal memory and bog down your phone.

THX for yr quick reply, but
what can i do with those app that are forced close without sdcard?
they are original broswer, camera (i tried another camera app called camera zoom which can define a user path for the saving photos, but i fail on defining a folder on the root directory)
I would uninstall and reinstall them. They are "fragmented"
Or clean flash a ROM and don't download any apps.

Zenfone 2 Storage problem - what to do ? :(

Hello,
Im experiencing really weird problem that never happened to me and now Im trying to find a solution but I cant find anything and I dont really want to format my phone because it would solve this problem only for some time.
The problem Im experiencing is regarding to my storage / sd card.. when I install any app it will make folder on my phone storage and not on SD Card even tho I selected to install apps on my SD Card. Another problem is that when I try to move that file that is placed in my phone storage to my SD Card then it wont clear any space from phone storage but the file is gone - and then when I run the app it says that I need to download additional datas and when I press download data it just say that my storage is full and I got 45gb free SD card and almost full phone memory even when I moved 1,5GB file to sd card .. I really dont know what to do..
Im also adding screenshot of my used space where you can clearly see that my apps on phone memory got 4GB and other files got around few hundred mbs but my free space is ONLY 500 MB and graph showing I should have around 6GB of free space..
Thanks for any help
EDIT: Im not rooted and running latest stock ROM
What app are you trying to delete the files in? Doesn't it have trash or something?
It doesnt matter what application Im trying to move (Im not uninstalling them or deleting) its happening to every app.
Anyone please?
i got this concern too. i want to install large games with obb files, but even if i transfer manually the obb files to ext sd/android/obb folder the game always says "download additional files" . in short the game can't find or locate the obb file due to some limitation on ext card permissions to read and write. im not sure on other devices. but i do believe thats how default android system is. :crying:
Correct me if im wrong but i guess the only solution here is to root our zf2 and install folder mount . forgive me for my first post. newbie here
Asus Zenfone 2 ZE551ML

well.. first of all u must know this fact that there are only few apps are present which can install on sd cards.. 90% of apps are developed to install on internal storage, if u will move them to sd card, they will not run.. and copying appdata files directly frm file explorer never solves this problem.. it will eat ur double space only.. there is specific way of doing this.. but only for those which supports installlation on sd card.
now ur problem of space, just clean ur junkfiles.. use xplore file explorer, enable 'show hidden files' and check one by one that which folder and file is eating ur storage.
if it doesnt work.. only last option is hard reset from stock recovery.
What is the main difference between internal storage and sd card? I dont get it why it shouldnt also work from the sd card.. and I was told by others that if I root my phone and download specific app / change settings I will be able to install to my sd card too. I was also normally installing my stuff on sd card when I had previous phone with 4.2 Android. With all these things I really shouldnt buy 128gb card that cost me 40€ because there is 95% of free space and I cant move anything (applications) to it.

yeah.. during 4.4 time.. apps were sd card freindly, but nowdays its rare.. bcoz every app developer is in race of superiority.. internal sd gives better r/w speed, and its not removable so that app can run 24/7 on your device.. dats y they make apps to install on sd.
dont get dissappointed.. your problem is solved in andoid 6.0 marshmellow, it gives u option of using external sd card as phone's internal storage. as soon as u insert the sd card.. it will ask you that how to use it.. as a portable storage or as a internal storage..
So plz go get buy 128 gb ssd.

your phone may be full of junks.. plz make backup of your important data.. hard reset it.. hard reset is required evry 3-4 months. just do it.. it wil solve ur problem.. other wise if u are rooted then get the root explorer and delete the un necessary files from root.
Oh thats great that Android 6 will make my sd card work again. But now there is that issue that Asus is working so slowly on Android 6 :<
is there a "trash" folder? every time i delete things, they disappear, but the space doesnt free up. i also have the same problem as the original poster: my apps and all files only take up about 6.5 Gb, but my free space is only 800Mb out of 11.5Gb...i downloaded "diskusage" and it shows 4.9Gb of "system files" but i cant find them using my file manager or storage screen (this is in addition to the 4.6 Gb of "system reserved" space)
I tried to show hidden files and found a ".trash" folder, but there isnt anything in it
use ES file explorer , it has a feature to find all junk. Also ZF2 is not deleting files from gallery , it stores them in .trash. Check that too.
