apps take too long to open, come back to, switch task - Windows Phone 7 General

I love my htc hd7 love wp7 am a big supporter, I want this os to succeed, I just can't wait for multitasking and apps running in the background. Sometimes it is so aggravating how long it takes to reload web pages, facebook, foursquare, ANYTHING that im doing when i leave the app to do something else and come back to it, its like the first time i ever open the app and i sit there and watch it reload the web page, restart facebook, it just gets old after awhile, on winmo 6.5 i would bounce everywhere between apps, texts, web it was great
anyone else feel this way

There's plenty of discussion about multitasking already on these forums. I don't see why we need another thread about it. Clearly it bothers a lot of people.

SMS/MMS Texting lag

I don't know either its my phone that lags or the rom, but recently after installing Energy rom, going into sms mode to send a text to someone takes at least 10 seconds. Is there a fix for this? Or is it my phone's problem
I've read that it's got something to do with WinMo 6.5. I don't have in depth knowledge of the topic myself. All I can tell you from my personal experience is that I've seen the same lag ever since I got off of the stock Sprint 6.1 ROM. (Been using variations of MightyRom ever since). It aggravates the hell out of me.
I bought this phone because, at the time, it was the best Windows Mobile phone on the market. If this was the best, I'd hate to see the worst. It doesn't even do simple BS like SMS as well as my old throw-away LG dumbphone did. Don't even get me started on the lagginess, freeze-ups and other pains of the 'advanced' functions...
Yeah with my TP2 whenever I open a text convo, do my thing, then exit.. it takes atleast 10-15 seconds to un-freeze into the All Messages window.. tried clearing the ram, but still nothing..
This is horrible! I recently started having this problem, if you have a really long text message conversation, the phone becomes completely un******* usable. I threw mine out the window of my truck today I was so aggravated. Mine has gotten to the point that you have to pull the battery out, or wait 5-10 minutes after you close out the text messaging thread. I'm getting an Evo - I really want to stay on TP2 but if I cant even text message, this phone/winmo 6.5 is totally junk. I'm hoping someone has a fix or tweak for this.
The only solution is to purge your messages, Arcsoft likes to load up all the messages before allowing you to do anything, sucking up alot of RAM and CPU, so less messages = less work, you could also try the classic text messaging (non threaded), the new overclock app kinda helps with this stuff. And the HTC messaging client as a last resort. the structure of the app is different and it doesnt take quite as long to load the messages, and it unloads itself much quicker than arcsoft in my experience.
I try to not to keep any SMS older than 2 weeks. I'm not one of these SMS crack-junkies that likes to keep 20k messages on their phone. I only regularly text maybe 4-5 people, so I never have more than a couple hundred messages on my phone at any given time.
I'd actually delete them sooner, but there's no decent app to purge based on message age. SMSPurger is a slow, buggy piece of junk, and nobody else seems to have written an alternative.
That brings me back to my old LG phone. It had a function where it would auto delete the oldest message once the combined sent/received list hit 300(?) messages. New message comes in, oldest one gets deleted. Why is it my WinMo superphone can't do something this simple?
If the issue is that you want an auto delete program, then the reasoning is that No one like to develop for WinMo, and the SMS has kind of always been an issue on the Professional Version, I had no problems with the SMS on my first WinMo device, the Moto Q9h (kinda miss it). I have had SMS issues on all 4 of my PPCs LG CT810 (incite) hTC Raphael (Touch Pro), Rhodium 210 (Touch Pro 2) and Rhodium 300 (Tilt 2). Best solution I have had, purchase Sms-chat if you really like your texting, It was lag free, and worked 100%, the only thing that I didnt like was the cheesy iPhone rip off. The main reason I still get WinMo is because I HATE apple. - but anyway, your issue is suffered by many, and it might take a while to solve.
hi
Just install the fix from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=664915
I did it and it solved problems with sms in manila 2.5- no need to purge or delete long conversations.

Problem with issues/features of android

Well I got my hands on the most advanced operating system
It is nice but a bit annoying unfortunately. I have some questions about it guys and hope you will be able to help me.
For starters the Gmail app is crashing all the time 'stopped unexpectedly', maybe because I told it not to sync, but come on I can't even open it. I use the exchange and if I tell gmail to sync I just get my emails twice which is annoying.
For some reason the thing decided that I want my facebook contacts in my dialer. Unfortunately I don't. When I linked them to some real people it named them however it wanted without giving me the option to rename my own contacts. And I don't want facebook contacts in all people. So I factory reset it and told it not to sync them, but then I can't associate my actual contacts with facebook. I mean the fracking thing wants to do what it wants and I want it to do what I want .
Can I have more screens on sense - like in winmo sense?
Then I don't have a simple file browser, why , the BT file transfer is not working, or just not available, no mp3 for ringtone or I missed something, my 6 and a half year old crap symbian nokia has both bt and mp3?
I can't seem to make it auto attach to the HSDPA network, don't know why, no such setting
Why does all the software makes folders wherever it wants, all over the sd card, without even bothering to ask my opinion
I installed 3-4 apps including the missing file browser and bt transfer, plus some more basic stuff sat nav and now I'm running out of space, why
Don't get me wrong, android is alright, I didn't wrote here to bash it or something, just to share another thing below
Ever since the dream came out I read what a great os android is, now I get it 3 years later and I find it lacks some basic functionality I had many years ago on my crap symbian. I was with winmo the past 4 years, it has flaws, but it's mail client hasn't crashed once, and I can't even open Gmail app on Google OS. I can't even imagine what was the expirience for the dream owners. The other thing, I am not a programmer, but I have used linux before, and calling this thing linux is like if I call my house a skyscraper.
Anyway if someone has a solution for my problems I will be really grateful guys
Ok I'll kick this off:
Gmail app crashes - Well mine doesn't and never has if you have factory reset and its still doing it then maybe try looking to see if it a problem with using exchange at the same time.
More Screens - The desire has 7 home screens 2 to the left and 2 to the right which can be viewed by swiping left and right, pinching the screen as in a zoom out method or pressing the home button.
No File browser - yeah your right install Astro
No Auto HSDDPA - Not sure about this as mine just does any more info?
Random FOlders - Yeah this is very annoying maybe version 3 will address this
Lack of Space - the phone has limited internal storage and all appds install to it. Version 2.2 is now being rolled out which allows installation to the SD card which will give more room. The Sat nav stuff is huge and will be why you are running out so quick. That along with the carp the network operator has shoved on there so debrand asap.
Its not linux - you're right its based on it though. A full blown linux install would frighten most ppl though so they have installed a nice UI to cover up the complex stuff.
Thanks
The gmail app crashed less (1 of 3 times) if I actually synced mail with it and every time if I sync only contacts
I know about the 7 screens, just wished for more -10 for instance, I've been using smartphones for quite a while
Hsdpa can be on or off, it can't be off and then connect by itself if something needs it.
Its weird but 3 mobile didn't put any crap inside, or at least it is not in the apps part. Actually I had to download the crap by myself as it was skype, which I wanted to have anyway
I am still unsure about rooting it, as it looks like I won't be able to achieve much, alright I'll have a terminal, but I need to use it for something
The device says it has 147MB for software, sat nav 2x11-12MB + crap on sd card, some other minor stuff - file explorer, bt transfer, taskmanager, dictionary with database on sd, goggles haven't tried it yet, flashlight, skype, win messenger, google earth and it's at 75%
hope this helps and thanks again for the advice
Hi Again I am stuck on the gmail issue and unfortunately there are only 7 home screens.
You may try Data On Demand app that may do something like what you need for the data.
I wouldn't bother with rooting as like you say its not really necessary and has few advantages other than backup.
I know Google earth is huge but it does appear like you should only of used around 60 to 70 Meg or 50% from the stuff you list Mind you I think a lot of the system apps like weather etc may use some of that memory but cant be uninstalled but I could be wrong on this.
If you're going to get the best out of this phone you have to give in to google.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Yeah, thanks, in programs there is the data consumption of all apps, surprisingly, the browser has used 7,84MB of max allowed 6MB cache, now I know what's wrong with the space
Do you have any idea about the contacts+facebook issue? For example a .conf I can edit or something else
Btw I knew about these issues in 1.5 (bt,storage, file explorer), but I tought they were fixed over 3 years. I haven't read much about them, except how great android was and now i feel like a kid without icecream
@Mark One - What do you mean by this, if I wanted a device which did what it wanted, I would have bought an istick. Linux has always been doing what I told it even if it lead it to crash. It's just a phone if I don't get along with it I'll just get another one.
Err the facebook issue I dont have cos i dont use it but I do know that if you press phone and press the option on the bottom left to show all people then you can press the menu key which allows the selection of the "View" option where you can set "only show contacts with phone numbers" maybe this will help?
Froyo or version 2.2 of android has just been released which addresses the storage problem but not the others
I found this, it ditches most of the FB contacts, but leaves the ones which have phone numbers entered in their profiles, that is in the dialer only. I'll keep digging on this one.
Alright, I rooted the thing with unrevoked and the hboot 0.83 recovery image, installed froyo open desire sense + 5.xx radio. Unfortunately everything is the same, only skype is not working now. I formated the sdcard but the thing only lets me move a couple of small apps on it. Sat nav doesn't want to be on the sd, is this only me?
My mobile network is blocking sites with xxx content, unfortunately it is blocking some which don't have. I tried to change the user agent of the browser, it didn't work. If anyone has any idea about this
Now I debranded and rooted what do I do next

Crazy lag in long text conversations

Hey everyone, I`ve noticed a terrible flaw in WP7 and maybe I`ve overlooked a way to overcome it.
The problem is that sms conversations that have become really long, create a huge lag in terms of scrolling, typing and pressing the send button. In Android and iPhone, they have that option where you can 'click to view previous messages' but in WP7, it seems to display all the messages no matter what which is probably what creates the huge lag.
Anyway to fix this?

How many messages do you mean by saying "really long"?
The conversation with my girlfriend has a few hundred messages since I bought the Omnia7 but I cannot see any kind of lag.

Hmm..I'd say somewhere around 2000 texts? It's really bothering me... I feel like I'm texting on my iphone 3g lol.
Ill probably record a video to show what I'm experiencing in a few days after my exams.

ive noticed the same thing! they should do like they did on windows mobile when you scroll up you gotta press a button to load the next few cause theres no point loading every single text cause it can cause majorr lag
I had the same problem too. The only way to fix it is to delete the conversation.

Strange, i just came on here to see if others had the same problem. It happens here too. A "see more" button would be great.

Wish they add it in next update.

My wp7 lags on messaging too after 1000 messages so slow
Darn, I was hoping it was just me and that i could fix it.
I really don't want to delete the conversation... guess I'll just have to live with it. I'm surprised they didn't implement the show more button like android/iPhone does it.
You should be deleting conversations that start to creep up into the 1k range.. I remember on android if i reached 1k in a thread; I wasn't able to delete it, it was so large that the os would choke..
So moral of the story, dont keep long threads..
Really??? You need that many texts???

Any phone would do that. Blackberries do it, Androids do it, and iPhones do it as well. It's time to set a reasonable threshold for cached texts. It lags for the same reason the XDA Forum list lags a lot of browsers...
Microsoft really needs to add Text Backup to the Devices Site, like MyPhone had...
Dunno why you'd want 2k text cached, though (everyone says in case they need to look up information from an earlier text, lol...).

I have several 1600-2200 message conversations. I haven't delete an sms since december of last year. there is no need in deleting them. fix the problem, move on.
smsbackup is great.

This.
Sure, some of those texts may well include important information but, and be honest, would you ever be able to find that one message out of 2000 when you actually needed it?
I'll admit, I don't text much these days as most everyone I used to text now owns a smartphone - I tend to email or IM. If I email all messages are stored in the cloud (Exchange, Hotmail, GMail etc etc) and easily searchable (I do wish WP7's email client would include server-search though) and if I get a piece of very important information thru IM I'll copy it into OneNote - which, again, lives in the cloud and is fully searchable.
Honestly, if there is any vital information within a text you need to "look back upon to read" then you're seriously handling your information in a horrible, horrible manner. I would think most people would use e-mail for this type of thing, or store it better. Once texts in any OS reach a certain point, it takes a disgustingly long amount of time to look back at any level due to he sheer amount of texts... I delete messages once a month.
This is honestly a no win situation for Microsoft... If they put a load more button, then people complain the way they did back in the Sense days where they wanted it loaded entirely. I like the load feature, it allows to uninterrupted view for a reasonable amount of texts...
If you're a psychopath who decides to store 5 billion texts, you can't blame anybody but yourself, and you honestly aren't normal.
Yes me too. I didnt erase my sms since i bought this Mozart and i dont see lag at all up to now.

then it should load like 100-200 texts and when you scroll back when you reach the end it should automatically load 100 more before you get to the end

I promise somebody would find a problem with this... Like I said, I honestly don't mind because I don't keep thousands of texts, and I send a healthy amount a month... But I don't let them collect for a year like some users...
As far as the lag, I haven't seen it, I'm guessing because I keep it at a reasonable amount...

Its not vital to me, but sometimes you want to keep the texts from someone special, or someone who isn't around anymore. I would delete them, but I do not like deleting anything knowing that I'll NEVER get it back if I wanted. With the iPhone, I backed up the SMS database file iTunes backed up and then deleted the texts from the phone. That's all I needed.

The Judgement day never came, but Mango event will indeed come!

Really, superreally, i mean megabyte x 10^60 really, the mango event will be held on May 24th! Anyone excited to see?
The one thing i would love to see is to have facebook intergrated to be useful, like getting notifications if someone replied it back to my fb posts by using people's hub. Cause when i use fb for commenting & stuff, i have to manually search them to see if i ever got replies and even if someone replied it back, and i go to actual facbook.com, it won't give me notifications that the person replied me back. (that is when i used fb through people hub.)
What do you want to see in the next big update?
I want option to save camera setting.. way to freeze my phone from changing into landscape mode when i dont want it..
I just want multi tasking, and more APIs. I am sick and tired of havting to re-load apps just because my phone whent to sleep, or I checked an e-mail.
Turn by Turn Navigation, it's the only reason I haven't left Android yet. (And i mean Bing Maps TbTN, not some random third party app that gets removes from the marketplace)
Exchange sync'ed Tasks. I love the phone, but not having Tasks and the inability to dial directly from within a Task is a daily major pain for me.

Try Tasks Anywhere or My Tasks. They both let you dial and launch url's from within the app. No exchange sync yet though. And I believe there is a few or at least one that has the feature of exchange sync. But, they may not have the linking feature.

OFF TOPIC - DESKTOP Chrome is acting strange

Ok, I know this has nothing to do with the Epic Touch but I value all of your opinions about technology stuff.
I recently switched my primary email to be my Gmail account and since I did that I was going to try using pretty much all of Google's products since it makes things very streamlined.
In doing so, I switched from Firefox to Chrome on my computers. It's a great browser: love the themes, controls, add-ons; pretty much everything (especially once chrome on android gets ironed out and bookmarks, tabs, etc. are fluid between desktop and devices).
Unfortunately, there's a major kink in the armor I've found since starting to use Chrome. Google's own websites are acting wonky! Not all of them, but Google search & Google maps (two I use constantly for work) are acting erratically. See screenshot attached as far as the search problem. Maps is just really, really unreliable and slow. It will take 10-20 tries to get it to find an address, if it ever does. I'll open Firefox and it will find it the very first time, very quickly...same with the google search. It never shows the page I screenshot and is very quick and reliable on FF.
I'm confused and just looking for some insight from ya'll smart mofos.
Is it just those two sites, or are other Google sites affected as well?
Make sure you're using the Stable release of Chrome. (Settings -> About Google Chrome and make sure dev or beta is not after the version number.)
Have you tried swapping out your DNS servers? I tend to use Google's DNS servers. http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/ (Let me know if you can;t get to that, lol.)
Something might be messed up in your registry.
I had to change to Google Chrome from Firefox about 6 months ago because the Reg was all messed up and causing Firefox not to play any video, and a few other things. Yet when I started Chrome everything worked. Instead of trying to figure it out I just kept using Chrome. Haven't had any problems since. Although you may be using a Beta version also and don't even know it.
It took me awhile to find a decent program for checking the reg, so I would do a search on www.download.com for registry or registry checker.
ps I hate it when cheerios goes down the wrong side of your throat. cough cough cough
Thanks guys, I appreciate the input. I downloaded CCleaner and that got rid of a bunch of stuff, helped with google search a lot. Maps is still sucky though, but I am considering trying out the DNS suggestion at home first as a guinea pig then here at my office pc. I'll let you know what comes of it.
I'm having a problem getting to cyanogen mod Nightlies as well. Those pages just won't load! IE9 would find. Also AVG keeps blocking those sites and wont let me unblock them!
I use chrome as well, and sometimes when i go to fb, chrome wont load the feed. then i reload and it works. this happened on every fb page i would go to. go to firefox or IE and it al worked fine so i knew it was on Chromes side, maybe the way the script was wrote. anyways, this did this for about 2 months. i kinda got used to it. but then it updated and it doesnt do it anymore. BUT, since i installed linux and chrome for linux, now the chrome on linux does it again. was wondering if anyone else had this problem. i know this is about google services not working right, thought i would throw that out there. dont know if it will help or not (leaning towards the not). just my 2 cents.
