I am running miui 12.11.1, stock kernel. My droid incredible as the AMOLED screen. My home button and the lower left part of the screen no longer respond to touch input. I have to rotate the screen to use parts of my screen now or I can't type in the "a" on the keyboards, or pull down the menu in landscape mode. I've wiped cache, and full wipe, but it has made no difference. I also cannot mount the internal sd card but that is a known issue with this rom I believe.
I've also tried going to a completely different rom CM 6.1 stable. but I have the same issue.
Ideas or assistance would be appreciated.
this sounds like a hardware issue and is most likely unrelated to ROM/kernel/recovery
Sounds like the digitizer screen. Same thing happened to me. Look on Ebay for a new one.
this happens with certian Dinc's. i bought a new screen to fix my home button issue because they are linked, i ended finding out it was a loose cable but according to HTC its a rare problem and was isolated to a few phones
eh. . that is ok. If it is a hardware issue than I'm just unluckly. I guess I just need to remember to rotate the screen left instead of right. Is there an easy way to map the home button to the search hard button?
I guess if it is really annoying I'll sell it to one of the devs here who could put it to good use.
Doubt its a hardware issue so test it before listening to anyone on here. I have miui as well and I have the same problem then I did a nand and flashed a new rom and it worked but I restored and the nand and the problem was back. I thought it was kernel but I flashed different ones but that isn't it...i flashed the zip for data throttling instead of editing it myself but I doubt that is the prob...so I have no cle right now I was just going to give up because now I don't even get any calls so make sure you test to rule out a hardware issue because I doubt it is bc I have the same issue and they keep getting worse until I flash a new rom. I'll try to figure it out. Ley me know on recent changes you made so that I can have some help trying to figure it out.
Well, Like I said, I wiped, factory, reset and flashed a completely different rom (went from MIUI to CM Stable) and one side of the screen was unresponsive. I turned off the phone to put in a battery and now I have all my buttons and everything seems to be working again.

I've heard of issues with extended batteries where the pressure distorts the screen so it doesn't work...
Could that've been the case?
I doubt it was the battery, I had the original battery in there when it was not working and I'm using the extended battery now and it is working, both batteries have identical physical dimensions. It may very well be a hardware issue, I noticed that when I was having problems, I could not mount my sdcard on my pc. The cable was plugged in, the phone asked if I wanted to sync with the PC but it never showed up in windows. I did it just now (running CM6) and it works. The usb cable/port is underneath the home button so maybe that port is just fragile and causing issues? I never liked the location of that port, it should be on top of the phone or underneath, away from screen as much as possible.

Recently I began to notice a problem with my phone. Whenever I have the keyboard slid out the touch screen is almost non-responsive. So over the past few days I've tried observing what the exact problem is and I think it could be the cable/ribbon that connects the touch screen to the keyboard. I'll have to tilt the screen back and forth before it will actually recognize me touching it. And I've noticed when I rub that ribbon it seems to work. There's also a crease in the ribbon where it folds on it when you close it. I believe this is the problem but I'm not sure and I want any advice/tips I can get. If it is the cable can you order a new one and replace it yourself?
Thanks in advance
Any ideas anyone? I cant get it to half work so I can text and stuff but I have to press it hard and it still wont work at times so something somewhere or another is wrong.

Flash the stock ROM and SPL, and do a warranty exchange. This isn't a device you want to open up unless you really know what you're doing and are certain of the issue. If you really want to give it a go, then just buy a non-functioning unit from eBay to use for parts. They can normally be had for less than $40.
Wow, I cant believe that I finally found someone with the same problem as I have.
At first I thought that it was a software issue and I reloaded the software on my device.
The screen responds to presses with the keyboard in, but extended it doesnt respond and only the external keyboard works.
So to type a nice long sms I would have to start it on my display, flick out the keyboard to carry on and then flick it back in before I could press send or anything.
How frustrating.
But I did a test now and flicking the keyboard out and then slowly slowly pushing it back in I can get to a stage where both the external keyboard and screen responds at the same time again.
Definitely a ribbon problem or something.
Only had this phone for a few months now and if it already doing this then I am not feeling too obtimistic about its future.
Well, time to take it in for a warranty repair. I wonder how much greaf I am in for now.
Time to pull out my awesome trusty Artemis out the cuboard.

I had a friend that had this problem with his TP2 which I've successfully repaired. First thing if you want to do it yourself, go to youtube and look for the Rhodium disassembly video (this will help you a lot). It is not difficult to change any parts in the phone provided that you proceed with caution and take the necessary precautions.
If you are afraid or have never opened up a phone to fix parts, then I would suggest to send it to HTC - this would be devastating if you managed to break up the motherboard by mistake or any other parts in the process of fixing the flex cable.

Did you ever find resolution to your problem? Recently my phone started having the same problem, which I originally thought was related to messing up the calibration file when I put loaded xdandroid GBX0A.
However, it sounds like my problem is pretty similar to yours -- touchscreen works fine when the keyboard is closed, but when it is open it only registers on the bottom of the screen -- which is actually useful in some sense because I can still hit the soft keys in the messaging app and such, but not so useful if you want to scroll using the touch screen. If I play around with the z-hinge a bit, sometimes it starts working -- which sounds like the same thing that you described.
Sorry, I just seen your post but I never fixed mine as I went ahead and bought another phone (Evo) but I did research the problem quite extensively and the problem I believe lies in the ribbon that connects the two halves of the phone. If I remember correctly the motherboard is in the side with the keyboard and that's why when it's slide out, the touch screen won't respond correctly. You can find the part online and replace it yourself. I've taken mine apart and it's not that hard but as said, you need the right tools and to be very careful.
Hi guys
I have tried all the above
Last resort is i got sprite backyup to work
BUT HOW THE HELL DO YOU HIT "NEXT" OR "OK" FROM THE KEYBOARD AS SCREEN DOESNT WORK????
So about a week ago or so I began, out of the blue, to have power button issues. The power button would turn my incredible on when it was off. It would wake it when it was asleep/screen off. After that it became hit and miss. When the screen was on it was highly unresponsive. Sometimes it took several presses to get it to turn off, sometimes I couldn't turn it off at all. Sometimes a tap would bring up the shut-down menu as if I had long-held it. Long holding it usually didn't work either. A few times I had to do a battery pull just to shut it off. I eventually downloaded quickboot and a screen lock widget just to get that functionality back. The last thing I remember downloading before this started happening was 'reddit is fun'. I uninstalled that after the problems, but to no avail.
Now lets go over what I was set up with. I have an amoled unit. I was at the time using CM7 Final and whatever kernel was included with it. Although I have used it a lot in the past, I didn't have setCPU installed or running this time. The only root-required thing I can remember running was autostarts. No changes were made to autostarts in the weeks leading up to the problem. I have used many roms; Frankenrom, Virtuous, Ruby, ShadowRom, IncDoes AOSP, The New Guy, Warm 2.2, Redemptive, SkyRaider, Evervolv, and several of the CM Nightlies. While using Redemptive my radio completely quit working across the board. Returning it to stock and then re-rooting fixed it. As far as I can remember I had only used SkyRaider, Evervolv, and the CM Nightlies up until I was using CM7 Final.
So after the problem started happening I decided easiest thing to do would be to try and flash a nightly over it. Tried that, didn't work. That was kind of a long shot, and I decided I might need a full wipe. Did the full wipe and installed the latest nightly. The problem persisted. I think I flashed the latest SkyRaider then, still had the problem. This was starting to seem kind of serious so I did another complete return to stock. I booted into the stock rom and used it for a bit, maybe a few hours, it seemed to work. Since things seemed back to normal I flashed the latest CM Nightly again. Seemed to work for a minute, then it was back to the same old problem.
Now around this point I, for reasons I can't remember, remove my 16 GB SD card and put the stock 2 GB one back in. I have SkyRaider on that and I flash it, it works perfectly. In fact it continues to work for a day or two. All this time my old 16 GB is sitting out on my desk. I eventually decide to clean it up, deleting a bunch of stuff I didn't need on there, and throwing it back in. After putting the 16 back in the problems creep back in. Here and there, then only working half of the time, then barely working at all.
About this time I come up with the idea that maybe something on the SD card, or the card itself, is causing this problem. Seems like a long shot, but I can't think of any other reason that would fit. I do not install apps to my SD card.
So I pull the SD card out. I was at work and I didn't have my old 2GB, so I just left the slot empty. It seemed to still be messed up, but over the course of the next hour or so it began to work correctly again.
Now I'm at home and I have deleted everything from my 16GB, and reformatted it completely. I'm about to flip it back in and see how things go.
The strange thing about this whole situation was that the problem didn't seem to just start and stop. It was as if it phased in and phased out over time, but always being caused by certain things. It seems organic if you know what I mean by that.
Feel free to tell me this is a really ridiculous idea. I think it might be. Is there something critical to the android system that could possibly be stored on the SD card?
Maybe its a hardware problem that's being affected by the weather in your area, because you can run android fine without an SD card. You would be surprised how the humidity affects electronics. This is just a crazy thought to a crazy problem lol
Wow, finally there is someone else out there with this problem.
Mine didnt have this problem till i flashed MIUI latest rom....but even after somehow making it into the recovery mode...i was able to restore my previous cm7 build...
BUT....the problem persists....
So I think I am going to pull out the 8gb sd card my friend gave me from his EVO 4g.
It annoying because sometimes i cant get into even hboot with power + volume down.
I know the volume buttons work because i can change volume on phone.
I can still see the power button still being pressed down, its not stuck or anything...it works 50/50
Can you give an update OP, please?
I also have an AMOLED Incredible..and dont want/can afford another phone...
have any of you opened up your phone to see if the button was still soldered to the board?
- i did and it is, same issue.
Last night I updated to the latest ics update so I'm on 4.0.4. I've noticed it shuts off by itself occasionally. Even now at work, phone is laying flat and it shut off once. Also this morning driving to work phone was on my dash and it shut off. Both times phone was in sleep mode and I didn't know it shut off completely until I tried to turn screen on with volume keys or power button. I would then of course have to hold down power button to start phone up again. I haven't rooted or anything , I'm stock. I've tried tapping the back by the battery to see if something was loose but nothing happened.
Maybe some of you guys have experienced the same. Will this go away when I start rooting and romming ,or do I have defective hardware?
So no-one? So far I looked online and someone mentioned putting paper under battery to hold it tighter against contacts? I'm trying that but not sure if it's making battery hotter. I'll see if that works.
Also called Google just in case I have to go through the returning process which I hope not to go through this is what they emailed me for my issue.
" Greetings and salutations,
Thank you for contacting Google. It was my pleasure assisting you today. Many issues can be resolved by performing a hard reset by removing the battery or by factory data resetting your device, but first I'd like you to try removing the battery, wiping it clean with lint free cloth, as well as the prongs that connect to the battery itself. Try this a few times, if it does not work this should. Be sure to backup any personal files you may have on the device.
To factory data reset your device, touch the Settings icon from your ‘Home’ or ‘All Apps’ screen, then select ‘Backup & reset’ under ‘Personal.’
If you're unable to get to your Settings menu, follow the steps below:
1. Power down your device 2. Press and hold both volume keys and the power button to enter Bootloader mode 3. Press the volume keys to cycle to the Recovery mode option 4. Press the power button to select Recovery mode 5. From the Recovery mode screen, press and hold the Power button then press the Volume up button. 6. Use the volume buttons to select wipe data/factory reset. 7. Select Yes -- delete all user data. 8. The factory data reset process will now start. Once its finished, select 'Reboot system now.

I better root and try a Rom asap huh?
I'd say get a replacement for it while you still can.
yeah getting a replacement could be the wisest thing to do
altho if when you received it in 4.0.1 it wasnt randomly shutting then something might've gone wrong with the update so you can unlock your bootloader and flash some ROMs to see how that goes
I definitely want to try some roms before I replace it as I have some time under Samsung's waranty. I also want to gently pull the contacts out a bit with small pliers to see if it holds the battery better. I'll even clean the contacts.
Man I'm hoping it's software ...

Gently pull the contacts out? Wouldn't that void your warranty? I'd be careful with the hardware if I were you.
Unless your battery contacts on the phone are smashed/deformed, it is unlikely that the battery connection is being physical broken at the contacts. The battery fits fairly snug in the compartment and the contacts stay touching even when the battery is partially removed. Probably no benefit to placing a piece of paper in there. Also keep in mind your NFC is in the battery.
I am also using a "Yakju" device from Google Play. No similar issue on 4.0.4 stock or CM9. At least not this nightly build : )
I actually got the GSM nexus yesterday and I had the exact same problem. The phone powered itself off twice. Once right after I turned it on and again about two hours later. Both times it occurred when I was moving around with the phone.
I pulled the battery and popped it back in a few times and it hasn't happened since.

You guys are probably right. The battery does already feel snug in there.
As I'm reading through forums for my issue, I can't believe how many sgn users are experiencing the same thing I am, some even reboots. Alot of them think it's apps. Good chance I'll exchange for the another device with same issue. I'm starting to wonder if this is why Google dropped the price.
Can't wait to get home and mess with this more. Hopefully I can make it go away.
I had this same problem when I first got mine with random reboots an powering off by itself, after about 2 weeks the problem went away, don't ask me how it seem to magically go away by itself maybe because battery needed time to settle in with the charging process.

I'm happy to report, knock on wood, that after I factory reset the phone the problem seems to have gone away. Last night I used the toolkit to unlock bootloader and root, and I flashed cm9 nightly and all is good so far. My only problem now is I dont know which rom to try next
I definitely want something with led customizations like cm9 has, thats just so old school reminds me of a blackberry .
Any suggestions, I guess I can also ask elsewhere.

I had light flow going when my phone would shut itself off. It doesnt include alot of the apps I use to customize so I'm not the biggest fan of it now. I think the cm9 led customizations is sufficient as it lets you add any of your apps regardless.
Aokp has more features and is most popular so you could try that. Then try paradigm rom. I done use light flow, I just have a few led colors from stock and its enough for me for now. Google voice green, handcent texts blue, and Gmail and calls white. All from the stock apps.
Black ice is good so far. So many different variations of aokp roms I guess, its hard to recommend the "best" one.
First off, im more than confident it is a hardware problem.
I was out climbing in the sun at the weekend using my phone for pics etc.
Went to sleep and when i woke up (by the alarm) the touchscreen wouldnt work so i pulled the battery to get alarm to stop.
Restarted multiple times - no effect
Flashed all stock ftf's - no effect
Flashed lots of different kernels and tried lots of roms - no effect
Hardware keys still work, i can change volume and get the power menu to appear and obviously wake the phone with the home button
My only idea of what has happened is the phone has seriously overheated and damaged the digitizer which i have read is quite delicate.
Any ideas before I take phone apart to replace?
Im 2 months away from upgrading!

if you did this and nothing happens, i think it is hw problem...
Yeah I figured as much.
Just taken the phone apart and re-assembled just to make sure I can do it and it works haha
Much easier than I thought!
Ill update when I fit the new one.
Touchscreen not functioning can also mean that you flashed the wrong kernel. Did you check before taking apart the phone?
Edit: Misread what was in front, problem could be hardware related.

How can it be kernel issue, if he took pictures and the next morning touch screen stopped working?
Update.
Replaced the entire screen/digitizer assembly today. Powered phone on, screen still displaying properly and hardware keys still work.
But touch STILL wont work.
Run out of ideas now, there's nothing else to replace apart from the main board or hardware keys board.
So I suppose its bye bye xperia arc
Why are all new phones so damn big haha
Hello!
Lately I've had this problem at three or four different, seemingly random times. The Vol Down button seems to activate all by itself and is being "kept" pressed down. I can raise the volume by pressing Vol Up but the moment I let it go it goes down to mute again very fast (I can see the volume slider when this happens). As a result I can't use the Power button and all I can do is either wait a bit and hope it goes away or use a program (say, xposed installer) to reboot the phone. The problem may persist after reboot, though if I manage to turn the phone off and then back on it seems to go away.
It has happened too few times to do conclusive testing, but that's all the data I have... My M8 (Int'l, rooted) is running Android Revolution. Do you guys think this might be a software or a hardware issue?
Thanks for listening...
You should try a different custom rom just in case if it is a software issue. If it happens again after that, it's a possible hardware issue. Do you have any cases on it?
No case - sometimes I use the included plastic one but this happened only when the phone was naked.
Worth saying the device is in perfect shape, has had a couple of very minor and soft (on my leg) drops but that's all.
I'll try a clean install and also another ROM - an ask in the ROM's thread if anyone else has had the symptom, though I did search before posting here and found nothing...
Thanks for your input!
Just an update; it must have been a hardware issue after all.
One day that the problem was very apparent, I knocked it lightly on its side on a piece of soft wood, and haven't had the problem ever since. Whether it was a piece of dust on the contact or the rocker itself was stuck or dislodged somehow, this seems to have fixed it and haven't had the issue again in several days now...
