[Q] How to port ROM from another device to DInc? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Sorry if this question is in the wrong section or has already been asked. Seeing as it has to do with development I thought this section would be appropriate, and I couldn't find anything else really helping on this subject.
What I am wondering is does anyone have or know where a good guide on how to port a ROM from one device to another is? I have done some AOSP work in the past, so I'm not COMPLETELY new to ROM building, but I have had no success yet with porting anything.

Theres a flash patch somewhere that might work depending on what rom u want to port

he's talking about the IncredibleDoes AOSP flashpatch. Replaces files in AOSP builds to Inc ones.

I think IncredibleDoes was working on some sort of thing that made porting easier. I did a quick search but didn't find it, but it is around. Either way, he was definitely our most active dev in terms of porting. Best way to find him is on twitter @IncredibleDoes.

Oh okay, I just did a quick search for "Flash Patch" and found the one you are talking about, plus another that was built off that one. Thank you.

If I was going to learn how to port, after learning how to use the kitchen, I would look at some roms that are already ported and see how they did it.
First and most recent one that comes to mind is preludedrew's gingerbread rom.
Might even want to pm him about it as he is pretty active.

To correct this, Evervolv is not a 'port'. It is specifically built for the Droid Incredible platform. Exactly like CyanogenMod, which without them/that mod, Evervolv wouldn't have been possible. Sorry just wanted to clear that up =P

Do we not have a working kitchen for EVO?

Do we have a kitchen that developers from xda uses to make custom roms or kernels for EVO? I'd like to try, pls. I'll even read up some android development books. :x

Need working video chat GTalk for CM7.1.0 RC1 please!

I'm running an Evo 4G and have found a few files that I have tried flashing from Recovery and the end result is I have incoming video & audio along with my PIP video as it should and the person I'm talking to has audio but no video. I'm running CM 7.1.0 RC1 (NOT the final release CM7.1 that is now out) and while I realize I can flash the official CM7.1 and have it I'm stuck not being able to flash another ROM for the time being and want to get the video working. Does anyone have a known working (as in video chat) GTalk for CM 7.1.0 that I can flash? I also found an app in the Market called 'Talk 1.3 Installer' which supposedly allows you to load different versions but the reviews aren't real good so I have my doubts.
Does anyone have a link to a working version I can download or does anyone have first hand experience with that app from the Market for rooted phones and can tell me if it worked or not and if so what option did you select?
Thanks for the help!
Wrong section but in the new cm7 stable thread I saw a gapps specifically for video chat. I can't tell of this is exactly what you're looking for because the thread is a little confusing. Let me know if that fixes the problem

I already saw your thread before starting this one and it doesn't have my answer. If you're talking about the newly released CM7.1 I would have to flash a new ROM to use that and, like I said, I'm not looking to flash a new ROM at this time. If I was I would just flash the newly released CM7.1 and be done because I already know it works first hand as I tested it on another Evo 4G. I thought I explained pretty clearly what I was looking for in the OP so I'm not sure how it's confusing.

I'm not even sure what thread you're talking about unless it's your thread because I didn't see a separate Talk file in there. If you're talking about another thread a link would have been helpful to know which thread you were talking about. I'm going to try XsMagical's link so no need now.

Like I said... I have NO idea where this thread you speak of is so a link would have been helpful. Never mind. If this doesn't work I'll look harder for it when I'm on a PC because it didn't come up in any of my searches. I appreciate you offering some help but when I help people I usually post links directly to what I'm talking about to save time.
Update: I installed the app I was talking about in the OP since I wasn't getting solid answers (prior to XsMagical's post) and ran it and was just able to test it and it worked fine for me. Seems others had problems so I'm not sure that will be the solution for everyone but for me it seemed to work as advertised. If that didn't work or if I have issues come up I will be sure to flash the file that XsMagical linked to a few posts back. If that happens I will also post back my findings with that but I'm not going to try it now since I appear to have a working solution at this time and don't feel like tempting fate. Just wanted to return to this thread in case someone else has the same issue and finds this in a search. So many of the threads I found in searches went unresolved so I like to post back findings when I have success in case it can help anyone else.
Thanks for those that offered help and the rest can go fornicate themselves.

The link he posted isn't to the thread he's talking about. It's to a different thread that he created that is attached to all of his posts. I already have the solution now so it's not important.

Like I said already several times: I'M NOT RUNNING THE FINAL CM7.1 ROM. I thought I made it pretty clear that I'm running 7.1.0 RC which isn't the same thing. I tried files already made for the CM7.1 you speak of and it didn't work. Hence my post here.
If you're not willing to read what people post and offer solutions the why post? I hate when people skim and then chastise when they assume the poster is asking the same old question. Real helpful.
You never said specifically what files you flashed.
And the cm7 thread is very easily found in the section that you wrongly posted in.
I just hate people like you.

The feeling is mutual. You're of ZERO help and are NOT an asset to this community. Congratulations for becoming the first person I've blocked on this forum. I reported your posts for personal attacks too. Maybe you're having a bad day or maybe this is just how you are to personally attack someone unprovoked but it's uncalled for.

How about porting this, Devs?

I'm sure some of you are aware of Galnet, I wonder how hard it would be to port a modded MIUI over to the Inc2? Which do you think would be the most feasibly compatible?
EDIT: Here's the link.

If INC-S has it like mentioned above, shouldn't be too bad to port..
I'd like to see how it runs myself. It sounds interesting. Although, I looked for a few minutes, and couldn't find a list of changes from the stock MIUI. What exactly did they change?

[ROM] TouchWiz/Sense/Motoblur WORK IN PROGRESS!!

Hey guys!
It's me again! I've offered, to help, with the ViciousWiz/Sense/Blur projects. And I'm here to say, it's all gonna work out fine! This thread will be used, to post changelogs, dl links, and for support!
So first; a few things, that DO work!:
ADB
logcat
WiFi should be working, now
It's not booting (yet) (It is in the bootanimation, that's why this is in the Working" part )
What's not working:
Phone, SMS/MMS
boot
dmesg (Even though logcat is working...? )
Everything else...
I have a request, aswell. I need someone, to make an app, with sweet tweaks!
I have a tester, who is willing tp create an app, for that. But two is better than one, right?!
So, I guess the first dl link will be posted in the next few hours
Addition: the changelogs will be posted in the original thread AND here. I have created this thread, in case I forget, to post it, on the other thread If you are unhappy with this, tuff ^^
Quick announcement: I'll be creating TWO ROMs. One, will be the original TWiz ROM, where I offered help. Secnond will be ALSO a TWiz ROm, but with a few customizations
SO, one stock version, and another version, which will be modded
PLEASE READ: My laptop broke a couple of days ago. I had the ROM, prted it over to my SIII, to see if it works. IT DOES! But, uhmm... I can't work, for the next couple of weeks. I need to get a mnew computer, before anything else, so... Sorry guys! I'll post the link, as soon as I've recovered it, from my HDD. I just hope it'll work on your devices, just as it did on my GSIII!
<Reserved>
This is great!, looking forward to a stable sense ROM.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but think you're talking about the Add on.. which is just "a theme + widgets" and not a full ROM.
I'm also hoping for a GS3 ROM.. the lock screen... hmm.. ^^

[PORT] - Sense 5

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2321867
so this is a LEGIT port of sense 5 to our galaxy devices (d2...)
and CNexus has started the port
if you can, go to that thread and help CNexus port
I already ported. I am waiting on a response from him to see if I can post it here.
Also, asking for a ROM to be ported, does not constitute development. Please read before making any threads, particularly in a dev forum.
Edit, looks like it got moved.
We really don't need a port, We just need to edit the build.prop so it show's as our t999 s3. But a nice shiny page with updates on our forum would be nice.

I was just going by what he said in his post. "Note 2 (haha, note 2): If you were linked here and have one of the carrier versions of the S3, then you CAN flash this without any risks or issues (without any additional risks or issues as if a Sprint user were flashing), as the partitions and specs are the same between the three carriers."
I know @charlieb620 will deliver.
Just flash the sprint build.

The more I think about it, I think it might be better to hold off on porting for now. (There really isn't anything to port yet anyway)
Wouldn't it make sense to get any devs interested in in working on it to just do so in the existing thread? This way needed info will be in one location rather than spread over multiple threads and forums. Just seems to me that it would be much more productive that way.
Then maybe port it over with separate threads once it becomes more of a beta release.

you are 100% right, it will be more productive that way. and i am going to donate some of my free time (when im not working) to help get more things working in the sense 5 port for the d2 devices.
Just so you guys know, it doesn't even need to be "ported" to your device. As it stands now, it can be flashed on any d2 (US SGS3) without issue because it uses the CM kernel (shared between the d2 devices).
Any port will only break it more than it is.
As has been said, I would prefer that we would collaborate to get one version working on the d2spr, and from there it will simply be a matter of swapping out files to get it up to same level on the other d2 devices.
At the moment, I am working on rebasing to the most recent stock HTC One rom, because at this point it is a port of a port and would be more stable if I ported straight from the source.
Would love for a Sense port, really do miss sense.

"The Thanks button is just to avoid "THANKS" posts in threads. Nothing more than that. Don't ask for it in your signature or post for it and defeat the purpose why it was introduced."
I do have a question... If Sense is successfully ported and is stable enough for daily use, might our phones handle it? I ask because a friend of mine had a Galaxy S and I remember there was an old Sense 2.1 port that worked pretty good and bricked his phone.

The only way a phone can be truly bricked is by overwriting the bootloader. I have flashed this myself (MANY times) and the partitions are defined correctly in the updater-script. I do not know what other issues that port may have had, but I am sure user error played a part somehow.
This ROM can no more brick your phone than any other rom for a d2 device can.

Ok guys, here goes.
I have made an official github repo for the various porting projects that I have going on. They will be updated with the initial files over the next couple days, and the booting 4.1.2 Sense 5 port is up (see the README inside sense5_for_d2 repo)
If you want to help, fork, make your changes, then submit a pull request.
@ziggy46 and everyone else, feel free to do the above and make ANY changes that are beneficial in any way, even if they are only aesthetics. Eventually visual changes will be done, so might as well have at it now
http://github.com/cnexus
^- At the moment, all the repo's on my github are related to porting Sense 4+5 in some way, so check them out and decide for yourself whether it's worth it to fork/clone.
Umm... I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned but this is piracy. It is no different from when HTC had a cow about XDA encouraging PPC-6800 to flash the 6900 / Touch firmware... I hate to be a Debbie downer but this is very illegal. At a minimum it is a violation of DMCA. At worst, it is an intellectual property issue. Either way, its not allowed on XDA.
If someone can point me to where HTC has opened Sense to non-HTC devices, I will drop it but as it stands and knowing HTC, Sense is their intellectual property.
