[Q] Best, most detailed, complete guide for Root & customROM? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Getting my first Android phone tomorrow (DHD) and I'm on 0% knowledge when it comes to rooting and customROM - I need a guide/page-with-alot-of-text that covers every little detail about the two subjects (how it benefits, what exactly it does etc.), so I can get into it and hopefully learn how to do it myself.
I realise I can simply google for solutions, but im thinking maybe theres one specific that tops all the others that all of you in here started out with.

FAQs or Guide

I have been running around on these forums for at least 5 hours before registering and I have to say these forums are a great source for these intresting and fun devices. I currently don't have one but will in about a week from this post and wanted to learn as much as possible before having it in my hands. There is a lot of great info here but finding it isn't the easiest of things to do.
A FAQs section or Guide section would help newbies like myself.
I say this because finding out things like is the T-mobile pocket pc phone edition the same as a XDA took me about an hour. Finding the software talked about in posts is very hard and good clear discriptions is even harder. I read about all these different ROMs and cookin em etc ( I downloaded the xda SE 1.2 cause it has most of the stuff I want) and find em or clearly understanding what programs will install em under windows I just can't figure out yet. Making Custom ROMs or adding or removing stuff from ROMs people made avail is something I want to learn about but finding the info all in one place doesn't seem like its going to happen.
I run a small web site and will be creating pages with some FAQs and Guides and maybe even hosting some files (of the free kind) this will take some time as right now I am using my cell phone as my computer modem, with a 115kbps connection it will be a slow process and I will post some place when its avail. Granted this guide will be geared towards the tmo PPCPE that I will be getting at the end of Jan.
We've always realised the lack of structured information is a problem here. The main reason is that we're mostly into discovering and developing new things, and that we'd rather spend time figuring out stuff (remove SIMlock, make internal chipdisk writable, understand the GSM part better, etc.) than writing FAQs and HOWTOs. We will, however get to some of this in the not so distant future.
Have you seen the encyclopedia ?
I have seen how the little popups things but have not spent the time in that section yet. If you need any help with the forums I will donate my time to help out.

overwhelmed

hi,
i recently got a xda trion and it's my 1st ppc. since i'm quite experienced with PCs i thought it would take me probably two days to get my device in a state that makes me happy. well,.... far from it ; )
i am completely overwhelmed at the moment and the worst thing is.... everywhere i go i notice that i lack the basic knowledge to join the conversation. since i get personally quite easy annoyed by rtfm-newbie questions i am in a starnge situation right now. i know that if i'd bite the bullet and read and work through everything related i will pretty soon master most of the required skills. i just really don't have that kind of sparetime at the moment. so maybe someone can give me a little shortcut and point me to the right places.
1st, i basically need a good foundation. until yesterday i havent heard anything about kitchens, romcooking and all that. is there a place where the basics are explained for dummies?
and now my actual problem. my device came with a german WM5 by O2. and it's causing already some problems. (paths not found by skinning application etc.) since my PC OS is also english I'd like to change it on my PPC. So I want to make a exact backup of my devices OS in case of some warranty issue and then install a english OS. one thing i dont know at all... does O2 usually try to prevent such action. for example by including some essential files which do not come with a clena install, but are required to use the phone with O2 as a carrier. I hope that was not too confusiong.
so... i would be very happy if someone could point me into the right directions, so that my waste of time by looking in the wrong places stays to a minimum.... and maybe letting me know about any problems that i might naturally run into when trying the above mentioned : )
thanks alot for your time
EDIT:
ummmm... one more thing. i spent hours yesterday to find some information on how to record phoneconversations. i cannot believe that there is really no way to do that with such a device. anyhow... the info i found was quite scattered and some of it seemed dated. what is the current status on this?
EDIT2:
aaargh... : ) why didn't i see this earlier. I guess most of my questions will be answered in the WIKI !!! Well, I was only checking out the FAQ which was kinda thin that's why I asked here : )thnanks
thanks

Need help with rooting (for android noob!)

Okay first of all hi this is my first time here so I apologize if this has already been posted (most likely has..).
I'm not a very patient person when It comes through reading forum threads hours after I've woken up.
Anyways~ on to my question.
I am looking into purchasing my very first Android (yay!) so of course I've done very extensive (sorta) research on the different OS versions and phones. I've come to decide that I am mostly interested in the new-ish ICS version of Android OS, however I am on a very tight budget for phone buying (I'm talkin' non-smartphone prices here...). I have decided to go the roundabout way and get an older (cheaper) phone off of ebay and root it to get the OS I want.
Now here's where I need some help, I am mostly interested in the Huawei U8652 (aka at&t's Fusion) and HTC Mytouch 4G Slide (PB65100). I would like the ICS ROM for either (preferably both :good and the Stock file in case I mess this all up.
Any pointers, links, and/or guides would be of great help! and I will definitely credit you if it works without a hitch :good:
Please note that I will not even attempt anything until I have located the stock files so I dont end up with a dead phone.
Thank you so much for reading, and in advance for your help. :victory:
Side note: I am also open to advice on better phones that are not as new that would be better than the two I am looking at. My basic needs in a phone are a good camera, decent speed concerning apps, and wifi (of course). I am not a very patient person so laggy/glitchy/buggy phones are not welcome, thanks! :good:
me too..same question

[Q] A general advice query from a Noob. (Sorry!)

Ok, for starters i'll apologise for A - Being a noob (We've all got to start somewhere I suppose!) & B - Possibly having put this question in the wrong category. (Hope not,but mistakes do happen!)
OK, i'm running a rooted Wildfire S with Wildchild as a custom ROM, but frankly i'm fed up of the (Even after rooting) lack of memory. Not wanting to commit to a 24 month contract upgrade (& have warranties,etc... to consider), i've found a nicely priced Desire HD i'm toying with buying.
I'm wondering how hard they are to root (A lot of threads here seem to be titled "HELP, PHONE STUCK," & the like & just wanted to gather a few opinions from those more experienced (Everyone on here,by all accounts ) about whether the handset is a good option &/or possible alternatives, before I commit to part with my hard earned in exchange for a possible problem child!!
Cheers & apologies for my noobness.
If you understand this, then you are good to go: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=38543349

Thanks for your reply.
I understand most of it. (I tend not to go gung-ho at things, when I rooted & custom ROM'd my Wildfire I took my time & read & re-read guides & suggestions before starting. Most of it is easily remembered!)
Not 100% sure about making a Goldcard, but that's what these forums & Google are for, aren't they?) As such, i'll figure it out & if I can't/don't/get stuck, i'll be back with my SOS flags out shouting "Help" at the top of my voice!!
Cheers for the response. Like I said, i'm a bit of a noob at this. Phones' take me out of my comfort zone, I'm a PC hardware man by & large, but I learn fast. Lol, perhaps one day, i'll be giving the advice, not asking the questions.
Thou art a Gentleman & a scholar. Thank you.

Somewhere around the last so many pages is a script for the GC.
Take it easy.
P.S. Scholar due to my sig? That was mostly team effort. They deserve the credit.

I shall indeed take it easy, step by step & do much reading everything twice or perhaps three times before I attempt anything.
"Gentleman & a Scholar" is a phrase I use in lieu of words like "You're very kind". I find it a more interesting phrase. That said, I doff my cap & raise a glass in salute of you & your team for your scripts. I had a click on your signature; It gave me some food for thought.
Thanks once again.

[Q] Tips and Recommendations?

Hey, so as you can tell this is my first post here. Well, not only that, but I just rooted my first device. I'm excited and nervous and have absolutely no idea what I'm doing.
That is why I came to you guys. I have never done this before and no one in my town knows anything about rooting devices, so all of this is a bit daunting. Anyways, I wanted to ask for a few tips and tricks, maybe a few apps, roms, or whatever to download. What to uninstall and not uninstall. But my main thing is, the whole reason I rooted was because someone said I could boost my RAM. And the reason I would want to do that is because, let's face it, I'm a huge nerd and I'm trying to play a Pokemon Colosseum rom. But my ram has gone from about 50% usage to now being in the 70-80% usage. Not only that, but my Internal storage went from being 45% full to about 80%.
Anyways, I'm probably not explaining myself in the best of ways. I just wanted to make this thread because after reading some of the others, I was still confused. Maybe here I can have someone explain it to me, because, as you've guessed, I'm worse than a newb. I'm like newb squared. Anyways, if you're confused on what I'm trying to ask of you, please respond down below and maybe I can explain some more of my problems.
Thanks.
P.S. By the way, you guys helped me out so much so far. Even though I didn't understand the majority of it from most other sites, you guys helped a lot more. You now take up over 50% of my bookmarks on my school computer. So much that they had to sit down all the seniors and tell us we can't root or jailbreak on the high school computers.
Oh, I also have no idea what roms and kernels and the likes of that are, despite my numerous hours of research during my 4 A.M. red bull fueled craze.
I also forgot to ask if there was a way I could add the facial recognition lock that is suppose to come with 4.3.
Which rom are you using?
Rooting allows you to do some very cool things. In a nutshell. Android is open source so people that are clued up with modding can change the entire operating system. They do All kinds of sorcery to the stock Roms eg. Zipaligning, deodexing, debloating etc. Debloating is where some of your ram gets freed up as they remove lots of the bloatware (unnecessary apps) that comes from manufacturer.
Also certain roms allow your device to render fully on the gpu.
Apps that you need to get:
Titanium backup
Greenify
Android Firewall
xposed installer

Best tip I ever read on XDA: "before rooting read, read and read again. And then when you're ready to root read it all again."
Be ready for every eventuality before you do anything!
Sent from my SM-P600 still running Jellybean Samsung!
And don't forget that rooting voids the warrenty on our units
