What's with the weird SD card slot design? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone know why HTC decided to go with that really weird design for the SD card? It's such a pain in the Ass =( why not just a normal slot.

I imagine that to help make the phone thinner they brought it to the inside. I also imagine they figure that with 32gb cards getting cheaper, more and more people will just "set it and forget it." All this is purely speculation though.

I really wish the SD card was more accessible. If it was a spring loaded slot feed on the side of the phone, for example.
It would be nice to swap cards and have one card for "ipod mode", one with some movies or tv shows and one for general use, for example.
Even having to pop the battery cover would be OK, but having to remove the battery is a showstopper.

Maybe the required removal of the battery thing is to make sure that you don't eject the SDCard while writing to it/reading from it or anything like that.
I dunno.
I'd love a more accessible design too.

I thought of that too... ideally, we could have the device sense when the battery cover is off and umount the sdcard at that point.
The question remains what to do if the sdcard is busy at the time. I guess the same problem exists when attaching the usb cord in "drive" mode, and that seems to work OK, so do whatever it does
Oh well, nice to speculate but we're stuck with the current (crap) design.
Hmm or are we? Flex ribbon cable to make the sdcard external anyone? I can't think of an elegant way to do this, unfortunately, there's no room between the battery and battery cover, that's for sure.

okay...very stupid question i guess where the hell is the slot for the microsd? is there a slot? really confuzed haha
lolz
Its ok dude, turn the phone over where your facing the battery, on the right side there is a very small slot where the mini sd goes, its very small so you need to pay attention well. Its before the metal that is cased on the phone. There is even an icon that shows the sd card and points the arrow from right to left. Make sure when you put the mini sd in your putting it with the label facing you.
Important addition: before following jxs714's directions, take off the battery cover (not the battery, just the cover).
and you dont need to turn off the phone
yeah yeah lol, dont know how i missed that lol

Question of the MicroSD slot and location..

Hi Folks,
I have heard that the location of this is a little awkward and that one need to remove the back cover to use it ie for SD memory card etc. However I was wondering how usable it would be for something more plug and play like the Elan MobiAdaptor, see: http://phonearea.net/video-elan-smartphone-microsd-to-usb-mobidapter/ where one is plugging/unplugging USB memory sticks. If one has to remove back covers then this may not be possible????

Thanks,
Sam

You will definitely have to do it with the back cover off
But it is doable.... ??? and batteries etc do not accidentally fall out. It is a bit of a shame that it is like this, although there must be a reason.
Thanks tomo,
Sam
yes its doable.
battry is firm in plave ande the slot is easy raechable.
Thanks....

I've been thinking. How about modding the cover to make the slot reachable?
The back cover is plastic, so it could be done. Don't know if the slot is to far away to get a card in there though (through a hole).

[Q] DInc2 uSD card removal

How do I remove the card from the phone to replace it? Seems like the text "microSD" is getting in the way of the card sliding out from the slot. Is there some trick that I should know? (First phone that I've not been able to switch cards with).
Thanks in advance for not laughing at me. I realize this should be easy, but the card doesn't have a push-remove feature and extracting it by gently pulling at the "lip" isn't working either.
That's strange, if I push mine in, it will pop right out. Don't know what to tell you. Maybe something else has gotten lodged in to the slot with the sd card?
I know the first time I tried to pull my SD card out, I had a really difficult time getting it out, after pushing it in.

Is it the 16gb that came with the DIncII?
One of my smaller (2gb) cards has a "label" that covers some contacts near the griping area of the card.
No idea why that isn't just a thin layer of some form of epoxy like other cards.
I just use it in an adapter with my Cannon camera.
When you finally get it out of there, if it's not the one that came with the phone then look for a label to remove and put a VERY thin coat of nail polish (clear) over anything that might need it.
Careful not to get any on the data contacts.
And be sure to let it dry for a long time before you put it back in.
Better yet, unless it's the only card you will ever own, get a new one.
Most of these cards have a lifetime warranty.
If it's the one that came with your phone, get on with VZW and have them send a new one.
If the card you are using has no catch tab, then you should NOT put it in this type of device.
It was made for a camera or something that uses an adapter that does NOT have a catch mechanism.
Like the old pushbutton radios that you could pull the button to preset the station, but if you push more than one button at one time you could snap the string.
The catch lock may have locked against the area of the card where the tab should be.
And as stated check the slot for things in there that should NOT be in there.
Like the broken off tab from a card that was pulled out.
Or an eyelash would even mess things up.
Anytime I remove my card I allays "puff n spit" (suck like taking a toke and spit AWAY from the device) before and after removal.
No telling what might have crawled around the slot.
The worst thing to do is to blow things INTO the slot.
Hope that helps..

[Q] How would you improve the HTC One?

This is honestly the first phone I've ever had that I felt was essentially perfect for me. While the camera could be a bit better, I frankly can't find fault with anything else. It's smooth as silk, the battery is as good as can be expected of a phone of this size and depth, and the screen is flawless. The build quality is superb.
While I really sweated losing unlimited upon upgrading from this phone, I can honestly say that I will be able to use this for 3+ years. Unlocked, I feel like I have a Nexus phone with Apple level build quality. Best of both worlds.
Thoughts? Am I alone in thinking this?
I guess I will say what everyone will say sd card slot.
I would like to see like apple has it. Being able to play all audio through usb. That's the only thing I miss from my iPod touch.

Only thing I wish it had is an external SDCard. If it had that it would be PERFECT in my opinion.
Laser turrets
But seriously, the phone does what I need it to do and fast. An external SD card would be nice but I don't really miss having one. I hardly keep anything on the phone anymore, everything is in the cloud.

I go through a lot of phones. Since the original Motorola Droid came out a few years ago it has been 13 different phones (all different styles). Actually if you go back to my Blackberry days it is quite a bit more. This is by far my favorite phone. When I shipped it off to get s-off I used an Galaxy S4 and hated it. Funny cause I had the S3 and Note 2 before and was ok with them. Guess I am just spoiled by this one...
If I had to choose anything it would probably be sd card slot and maybe just a bump in image size from the camera. I am not complaining about the picture quality at all and do not want some 16MP + image...just a tad more.
Power button on side like htc one maxx
The only thing I really wish it had were the headphone jack on the bottom.
It never was an issue until I went from the iPhone 4S to the iPhone 5, which Apple moved the headphone jack to the bottom on the 5.
Now I wish every phone had the headphone jack on the bottom. I find it to be a much better location.

power button relocation, extSD slot, larger battery, make the HTC area an actual button
Move USB jack to the side.
Briing back\ the FM radio app/
Standard 3 hardware keys (or better yet, hardware keys and extend the screen down), volume buttons on other side, power button on the side, and external sd card. Other than that, I don't care. Even then, the sd card is the only one I legitimately have a hard time with, and that's still not enough to turn me away from this beauty.

Actually, it is an actual button.

Note to devs out there, being able to map this thing to a custom app would be godly.

You could probably map it to anywhere you wanted. However, it requires a custom kernel to which we do not have source. Also its not an actual button, but rather where the digitizer of the screen comes down too far and is accessible from the top of the logo (almost on the screen, often accidentally interacting with the screen instead of assigned action).

Less bezel would have been nice...
Less bezel and more screen with the traditional 3 on screen buttons. A camera better than what's on the iPhone 5s. Larger battery. Micro sd slot but keep unibody design.

Well, as much as I like the phone there's a few things I'd change about it.
First things first, I'd want to have a RED one on verizon... The unibody is nice, but not being able to simply swap the plastics, like is doable on many samsungs, is a bit saddening for me. I did get a blue one, but the red one is drop dead secksay.
Removable battery... While the battery is great, most people haven't ever put the stress to the batteries like I have. I had an HTC HD7s where the stock battery was dead in less than a year from the many charge cycles I went through. It was to the point where an hour of standby would kill it. I'm hoping this battery doesn't kick it that quick, but I'm sure it will eventually and is the reason I pay for the insurance.
3.5mm on the bottom would be very nice. Makes listening to audio while using the phone in portrait mode much easier without fighting the cord.
Last but not least, a method to tear it down. I have taken every phone I've owned apart for cleanings once a month. My OCD is absolutely raging right now as I should have cleaned this thing inside and out a week ago.
But the other changes I'd like have been stated... SD slot, software buttons with a bigger screen, etc...
All around though, it's the best "stock" phone I've had. Every phone has it's issues to each person. This one just has less of a list for me. Just irritates me that I can't clean it inside... bleh

There must be some way to tear it down, right? What happens when you need the battery replaced? There has to be a way to get into the phone...

It's a unibody construction. There's really no way to get into it. If you need a new battery they will most likely just give you a new phone like Apple does.

I'm not sure that Apple hands out new phones instead of replacing batteries, the iPhone is not too difficult to get into, I've taken apart several.

Hmmm then how do they check the water damage stickers inside for a warranty return? I know they do...
I guess they could intentionally smash it, but not sure that would be their best approach
They have a tool. It's not available to the public though.

SIM card slot spring won't hold SIM

As the title says, my S3 will no longer hold the SIM card. The spring just keeps popping the SIM card back out.
Does anyone know how I could play a bit of operation to just disable the spring?
I just want to get a few more weeks out of my s3 until the new nexus 5

I had a phone where the microSD slot stopped working right. A piece of business card trimmed to the right size to slip into the tray along with the SD card added just enough tension to hold the SD card in place without becoming hopelessly wedged. Something similar might work for this if you can find the right thickness card. Good luck.

I wound up electrical taping it into place.
Hopefully that holds for a while...
Nope. That worked for about five minutes. Back to the drawing board.
I folded up a piece of tape and used it with more tape, to jam everything in tight together. Seams to have lasted ten minutes now.
I had the same problem and did this.

For anyone that comes across this in the future (or if you still need a solution):
At the bottom of the SD card slot (while holding the phone upright) there is a small spring which is responsible for pushing the card out. You can pull the spring out with a small phillips screw driver, knife or other thin point.
At the bottom right of the SD card slot there is a small tab like feature. Bend this up, and put your screw driver downwards into this small hole. Now pry the spring out. It will take a few attempts, and it will definitely help if you use a flashlight and look to see whats going on in there.
