I am the proud new owner of a DHD having just migrated from an iPhone 3G, this phone is just awesome but will take a heck of a lot of getting used to, its not a smart phone its a god dam technical revelation!!!
Anyway, I set up email (BT Yahoo), Facebook, Twirtter, Skype and created a Google Mail Account (Had to do download apps) but its not setup in mail yet.
After setting the above up I noticed that 3G was constantly on, is this normal?
Anyway my question is how do prevent Facebook et al from constantly syncing? On my iPhone they would only sync when I opened the application.
Also once an application has been opened how do I know / make sure that it is off, does simply switching to another screen switch it off or is it still running in the background using up batter charge?

Go to Settings / Accounts & syncs
Under there there is Auto-sync check box, you can check and select what to sync over there.
My question is How can I set Gmail check status on a random basis, once I check out Google it's immediatly push mail but I want it to check it i.e. every 4 hours.
How can I do that?

There's the option in the mail app I think. You can set two modes, for example 1h intervals during tha day and 4h at night etc.

Yes but I am using Gmail app and it's directly Push mail but I want it to check mails every 4 hours.

Have some question
In order to use the market i had to define google email account.
I don't want to work in the push mode with the google email, so i disabled the google sync through "Accounts & sync", but i want to receive google emails every 4 hours.
So i defined the google email account under Mail and defined to receive email every 4 hours.
Problem:
The problem is that because the Google sync is disabled i can not get the google emails every 4 hours.
Question:
Is there any solutions to disable the push google mode and work with 4 hours
email check.

Not too sure, but I would think receiving email every 4 hours would still require it to be running in push mode? Which would explain why you need sync to be turned on.
Not 100% sure, and would be interested to hear other opinions or solutions to your problem.
In addition i put attention on additional issue,
When my Google sync is ON i receiving emails in push mode to the gmail application , and the strange issue that these emails are not updated on the "MAIL" screen (where i configured the gmail account).
Hope the issue is clear ....
have you defined the gmail app in the mail app as POP, IMAP or Exchange?
DOn;t use POP.
But the sync in Gmail and the mail app should not be related to each other whatsoever. Mine works fine when i set it up to IMAP.
of course, make sure you have always on mobile turned on and have the internet enabled, otherwise all should be gravy....

I actually get notifications of emails much faster in the Gmail app than I do in the default Mail app. Gmail would instantaneously notify me of any new mail as soon as one is sent. For the default Mail app, it takes at least 5-10 mins before it does that.
I'm not sure if it's because for the default Mail app, the shortest interval you can select for receiving data is 5mins, but for the Gmail app, it's either turned on or off, which might make it instantaneous.

Of course the mobile connection is turned ON. (common )
The gmail accoun in the mail app is configured as IMAP.

This is the issue that i don't want to use the push ( which is the fastest way to receive email), i just want simple gmail configuration which will connect to the mail server every 4 hours and download the messages.
BTW the push requires much battery use (not sure).

I think for the Gmail app, it has to be push. Is there any reason you wouldn't want to use the default Mail app, sync to your gmail account, and set the retrieve interval to be 4 hours? That would solve your issue, would it?
Did the same. Just create an Exchange Acc - Sync every X mins/hours (or Push if you want to).

I dont think this is true, due to push email, makes the server from google to basically push email, if there is no email, it doesnt use internet every 4 hours to connect to google server to look for new mail therefore saves battery, while downloading 1 by 1 when they come is equivalent to getting a lot of email at once, for example 1 email every hour = 4 email at once every 4 hours.

I am not sure it's correct if you gets everyhour 1 email and you need to download it every hour, then i think it's better to connect once and download all the emails (once in 4 hours). But it's not important, i just want to be able to configure the mobile phone according to mine requirements.

The main reason to disable the push mail, is to disable the night emails.

I just updated to CM7 RC4 and everything is working great. I simply thought I didn't get any g-mails recently. I found out they aren't being pushed. Is this a common problem or is this something that I can fix?
May not be a CM thing per se, my gmail hasn't been pushed as frequently either. Verified by using pc browser and sending myself gmail from another account, it was at least a couple minutes before it got to device, was in pc browser in seconds.

I've been using the CM7 nightlies as my "daily driver" for months now. Never had a problem receiving Gmail. Sometimes the phone will let me know there's a new email a few seconds before I see it come into the web interface on my laptop.
The only suggestion I can offer is to make sure that your sync settings are still setup properly. From your home screen: Menu > Settings > Accounts & Sync. Make sure Background Data and Auto-Sync are both checked. Then make sure that your Google account shows up below, click on it, and make sure that "Sync Gmail" is checked
Mine can take up to 30 minutes to push mail, used to be a lot faster. I thought there was a setting for how often GMail checked email but I can't find any. So not sure if it ever existed or if Google removed that option. Also not sure if this is only a CM7 thing or happens with Sense based ROMs too.
edit: this only happens on my linked accounts (hotmail, ISP email, work email). mail sent directly to my gmail account comes in almost as soon as its sent. there is no setting in gmail (web based) that i can find that changes the frequency that it checks the other mail accounts, looks like the default is every 30 minutes.

Interval sync settings are generally removed from apps once they achieve true push functionality, since at that point they are moot.
It's odd that we are experiencing such drastically different things. I don't have any idea why mine come in instantaneously while yours take up to 30 minutes. Very strange indeed.

This only recently started happening as all my mail used to be pushed to my phone a a lot faster. The change happened within the last two months so I think Google changed its policies as to how often they querry the other services for mail.
happens from time to time. go into settings, applications, gmail and clear data / cache. this will fix it.
Note : you will have to go into gmail settings after your inbox syncs and set your settings up again (ringtone, vibrate, etc)

No worries, I noticed the same thing when I installed CM7 for the first time the other day. Took me a while to realize why. It also took me a while to figure out how to turn the vibrate back on when I type a message!

I got the ONE X last night, and I am having a problem in automatically receiving my Emails.
I have set An Exchange Email, Gmail, and Yahoo mail using the device's mail app.
the "Auto-Sync" is Deactivated to save battery and avoid syncing other accounts.
in the mail settings of the Exchange Account, I set the "Peak time Sync" to (Push mail) which means (I guess!!) I would get the Email as soon as it reaches the account.
in the Gmail and Ymail, the Least time available on the "Peak time sync" is 5 minutes.
in either case, I am unable to receive the Emails unless I start the app and manually refresh!!!
the Email reaches Ymail or Gmail on the Laptop, I wait for more than 20 minutes with no notification on the device!
I didn't have this problem when I had the Galaxy SII, and sometimes the Exchange Email reached the device before the Laptop!!
this is very annoying and any suggestion is welcome!
I do not wanna go for the Ymail app from the Market or any other Exchange support app!
NOTE: the Gmail application in the Device behaves the same way,, does not sync until I manually refresh from the app itself

When I had the SGSII I never turned the Auto-Sync On, and I used to get the Emails all the time very quickly!
Both are Android I do now know what is the problem!
Does any one have an idea about this issue??

possibly. but you can either turn it on and have push email or leave it off and have to manually check.
afaik auto-sync is a system wide switch for all updating. if you manually turn it off for everything other than mail only mail will be polling for updates. and there was some stuff a couple of years ago (with the iphone) that seemed to conclude that push is actually pretty battery efficient.
I am doing what I can to conserve battery. I just got my S3 last night. I installed K9 because that is what I used on my previous Droids. I checked my battery info this morning and K9 is like 19%. I have it checking every 10 mins for new mail. Any of you know if the native app is push and does it draw off the battery as much?

Why every ten minutes, particularly when you (apparently) have the option of push?
I've never seen K9, properly configured (I normally use push), take more than 2-3% of battery use, even in e-mail-intense scenarios.
cause the option is there that says frequency with a time limit. I have to select something. Push isn't there.
I suppose it's possible that your mail provider doesn't support push (who is your mail provider?), but the frequency check isn't where the push setting is supposed to be. Look under Advanced in account settings for push settings; if that's set up properly (you will be able to see a "Push" next to the last time a mail folder was checked if so), you can disable normal polling altogether.

Hmmm, so I just switched it to never and sent myself a test email to see if it comes in. That would be great if it works that way.
whats wrong with Google Gmail apps? its works great and wonderfully.
I have used k9 fit about a year and a half, generally have it at 30 minute poll interval but usually manually check for new mail about every 10. I get between 50 and 200 emails a day and k9 is never even close to showing up in the top 10 of my battery stats. Occasionally it will bug out and drain (about one a month or so) but a test cures this.
I would try to uninstall and reinstall if you are having regular issues with it. I have nothing but good things to say about this client, far better than any other i have tried.

I use K-9 with 2 imap accounts + gmail app and I can easily make 2 days on one charge.
I get the emails as soon as the server received them.
Are you using a pop account ?

How to you get it to work wonderfully with non-Gmail accounts? I have a non-Gmail IMAP account for work. As far as I can tell, the only way to use Gmail for this account is set up POP acesss to the account in Gmail. Using that approach, I get unacceptably long and and unpredictable delays in getting mail (typically a half hour to an hour). That doesn't work for me, which is unfornate because the stock emai app is utter crap.

Gmail app is only meant to receive mail from gmail. What people are talking about here only applies if you are using gmail. Afaik push is kind of supported on IMAP. Use the stock email app or k-9 to set it up that way.
Yes. I was trying to answer liquid's question about what us wrong with Gmail. The stock Samsung email does not support push (imap idle). I use Kaiten, which works pretty well.

Kaiten is on my list.. I definitely want to check it out, but just havent spent the $5 yet.
I'm on aokp jb. GPS on, Bluetooth always on. Always in 4g not lte. With Google including gmail etc to sync whenever gmail and calendar and that stuff does. Plus aokp lock screen weather and fancy widgets weather. I see a drain of about .75% an hour. The only time my battery drains is the moment I turn on the screen. I've noticed this with all android devices and too many people care about push and stuff. It doesn't make a difference IMO. Been on android since the g1 came out.

I use k-9 with 2 POP accounts, one every 10 min and the other every 6 hours. After running the whole day it doesn't even show up in my battery list. The lowest one is media server at 1m 20s of CPU time and 2% of battery usage.
Low email volume today on those accounts so that's part of it, but I've never thought it was much of a drain. Once in a while I'll see it in the battery list, but I see the Gmail app in there more often.
About a month to a month and a half ago, I developed this problem on my Email(not Gmail) app set up for my Exchange account: mail would occasionally not be pushed automatically and I would have to open the email app to fetch all the emails. There is no pattern that I am able to figure out when this automatic push does not work. Sometimes mail gets pushed and everything works great but at other times i would have gotten 6-7 emails and none would have gotten pushed. Rebooting the phone temporarily fixes this. First I thought this was a server side problem so I downloaded Touchdown(trial version) and had it run on the same account alongside. Touchdown is able to show all emails as they are pushed whereas sometimes the native email app fails to do so. Gmail is also able to push emails to my Gmail app at all times without any problems. Touchdown interface is ok but I actually like the stock email interface a whole lot better. Anything I can do to fix this?

This behaviour is new for JB. The stock email app requires sync to be on to actually poll, or even push like it should. Having never been a "syncer", I was fearful of awful battery at first, but this isn't the case. With two email accts on push, and the Gmail app syncing, it doesn't drain battery like you'd think. Just uncheck the elements for each account that you don't want synced.
There are quite a few reports of this on Google Code; the recommendation is to enable sync 9 times out of 10, assuming all the server settings are correct, etc... I turn off sync from 22:00 to 06:00, but other than that, it's on.

Thanks but battery life has been surprisingly very good on my GNexus and all accounts are set to push at all times. How do I enable sync just 9 out of 10 times. Can you give me a link to this on Google code? Thanks again!

I was saying that the answer 9/10 times is enabling sync.
Settings > Data Usage > menu button > Auto-sync data.
Don't have the links handy any longer.

Thanks. I checked and it looks like autosync has been enabled on my phone. Hoping there is something else I can do to have my exchange emails pushed.... Wonder what they changed in JB that did this. Is there a way to delete the email.apk for JB and install the email.apk from ICS?
