[Q] need help rooting htc evo - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

need help rooting evo with software number 3.29.651.5, I have seen many videos and read alot but found none for this build. Please help.....

use unrevoked

i need help as well...but I have 3.30.651.3. Just bought it 20 mins ago

+1 easiest method for 3.29 and 3.30 is use unrevoked 3.21 also change recovery at the time of root to RA.
Follow below steps, but also download last anon_ra recovery( put on desktop or a location you will remember). So when you get to the reflash step, go to file select customer recovery and chose anon_ra rather than clockworks.

This is good to know, my buddy has been waiting for me to root his but I was waiting on unrevoked. I had no idea it worked with 3.30 evos.

So I can do the unrevoked on mine. Awesome will try in the morning. Is it easier on a 3.30 or a 3.70 Rom. Cause I can update if need be.
Sent from my Evo using XDA App

Hey well I am rooted by using zikronix method he posted HERE. The unrevoked apparantly doesn't like when you have a hardware of 004 like I have so I didn't try that one....reading a lot helps lol. All those steps reminded me when I rooted my Hero a yr ago!!

I was pretty sure unrvoked didn't work for 3.30 because it had the new hboot? Report back if it works. Doubt it though. I would define tally use zikronix method. Had plenty of successful roots there. Very good.

on 3.30 if you update you will need to use z4root, not unrevoked. Keep it on 3.30

not just z4root. that is part of the method, but then you need to flash the misc with the engineering build before flashing into a rooted rom in order to turn s-off with unrevoked-forever then flashing up to a alternate recovery. so yeah stay with 3.30

Nope. I'm sure it will be announced when the newest OTA is rooted. Just hold tight.
WOW... really? this last OTA closed the hole that was most recently exposed?
So a new root method is going to be needed again for new handsets?
I really hope not... we are gonna have to re-open the whiner threads again.
Are you kidding me? Damn.
I was just about to root my phone from Unrevoked!
I just I gotta wait again.
Anyone help?

If you have turned S-OFF use this guide or if you have not updated unrevoke forever to turn S-OFF then use the guide.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=790394
If you have not turned S-OFF and have already updated then wait for unrevoked to say if it is working or not.
EDIT
Unrevoked tweeted this
Confirmed: This OTA will undo your root, but unrEVOked 3.21 will be able to restore it.
Source
http://twitter.com/unrevoked
quick question what does s on and off mean??
ok so its confirmed that unrevoked 3.21 will root new OTA Update. But will root bring down the new PRI 1.77
I was rooted with unrevoked before the update. I updated and am still rooted. The only problem I had was updating OTA. I had to flash the new update from recovery. I think doing this then remove clockwork and SU. So I reinstalled both after flashing the update. I read how to do this in a different post (also had links to clockwork and SU).

Hi
Can you please explain how did you flash the new update from recovery?
Or i would appreciate if you could point to the thread that describes where can i get the official update to flash? (and steps involved)?
thank you

How do I root Evo running 2.2?

If this is in the wrong section, I do apologize. I have a friend who wants me to root his phone for him, but he has done all the OTA updates. Here is the info
Android2.2
Software# 3.29.651.5
Pri version 1.77_003
Prl version 60670
Browser version webkit 3.1
Baseband version 2.15.00.09.01
What is the best method for rooting? I used the Simple Root program to root mine, but I don't think that works on 2.2
Look in the Android Development section for rooting 2.2. It's not nearly as easy as simple root but the instructions are pretty clear and straightforward.

Unrevoked 3, the newest version, does unlock NAND. I use that method and it worked well and required only few clicks. I also rooted using the old method, Unrevoked 3 worked just as well and I am Nand unlocked.

Apparently not. I used Unrevoked 3 last night to root my Evo and when I tried to install BusyBox it gave me a failed message saying something along the lines of "....or you are not NAND unlocked" If I'm missing something please let me know. Im ready to flash Fresh3.3 but I dont want to make any moves until I'm absolutely sure I've done everything right
Flash unrevoked 3. 21, reboot, check everything then flash unrevoked forever. But before this flash the latest version of ARMON RA, 1. 8 I think. Afterwards do a android backup FIRST. Then root. Be sure to click the "more " link at the unrevoked site, go through ALL the docs first.
Sent from my Sprint EVO
That would be nandroid backup. Do ARMON ra first, then backup, then root.

It does unlock nand, but the first ota overwrites it that's why you also flash unrevoked forever, get it... forever.

Just so we have this straight. I've already flashed Unrevoked. I have S-Off and Super User and all of that.
You're saying to reflash, Reboot, check and make sure everything is cool.
Then run Unrevoked Forever BEFORE or AFTER runnin AmonRa? In the unrevoked menu I can choose my own recovery shouldn't I just do it there?
After then root again?
Ok brother, 1)Run Unrevoked 3.21 using AmonRa when that is done 2)Make a Nandroid 3)You need to put Unrevoked Forever on your SD card and flash that, its that simple, now you are rooted, S-off, nand unlocked etc....
Have fun man, always remember NANDROID, NANDROID, NANDROID!!!!!!
It has saved my ass multiple times, it doesn't matter how advanced a user you think you are EVERYONE makes mistakes.
There is no need to flash unrevoked forever if you root with unrevoked 3.21. It is already included. And if you want confirmation look at the faq for ur3.21.

This. I was about to say the same thing. UnrEVOked 3.21 does 3 things: Root, NAND unlock and S-OFF all in a nice little executable. Once you get that wonderful "Done" on unrevoked's application you are done and can flash away any custom ROM.
I used the old 2 part root method and MY evo has been rooted since June. Now my friend wants his rooted. He has also done all the ota updates. If I do unrevoked 3.21, will I be able to unroot if he ever needs to take his phone back to Sprint ??? I've read a bunch of mixed results.

All,
I've seen lots of info saying that a EVO 4G that came with 2.2 can't be rooted but based on what I'm seeing here that looks to be outdate info? Are you guys saying that unrevoked 3.21 is meant to be used on a EVO that comes with 2.2 or one that was already rooted?? Might be a dumb question but nothing out there clearly states this...
Thanks,

[Q] NEW ROOT FROM 2.2 to the Amon Ra recovery?

I had to have my old evo replaced that came with the 2.1 software and the new one i have has come with the 2.2 on it. however I try to run it through the Unrevoked root and it errors out. Which HBOOT version are you running? Also just FYI Unrevoked 2.1 is NOT the latest version -.- This could be why you are having issues.

root for the newest ota?

Does unrevoked work with the newest ota that was just pushed?

Ok, new to the forum, new(er) to rooting....
I understand the ota GB cant be rooted.... but... and Ive searched everywhere on numerous forums for about the entire day w/o finding an answer..... is there anyway to roll back the update to 2.2?
shipped-roms and the ruu seem to be out of biz, rsdlite was suggested by a friend... seems to only work with moto...
if it helps at all, I do have a dinc 2.2 rooted... problem is my fiance's phone, she accepted the ota before finding out it couldnt be rooted. Is there anyway to utilize anything from my phone to reflash hers?
Any help would be much appreciated... GB update is killing her phone
Thanks

You should be able to use Unrevoked:
http://unrevoked.com/recovery/
make sure you have the droid incredible driver installed on your PC as well.
--
This process should root your phone, you'll then be able to flash other ROM's that may prove to be quicker, drain less battery, more stylish.

See my post a couple up.
And for your info unrevoked gave the to new firmware error because you must be on the stock froyo radio for it to work, you are on the latest gingerbread radio. And there is also a newer version of gingerbread out, the official one 4.06.605.3 ruu you can get it in the dev section but if you do go from .2 to .3, do it before rooting as it will also un-root you.

You take the PB31IMG.zip and the su.zip and place them on your sd card in no folders. Boot into hboot and wait a couple secs. It will find the PB31IMG.zip and prompt you to hit volume up to flash it. Once thats done then select recovery from hboot and select install zip from sd and select the su.zip. Answer yes when prompted to install. After it has finished reboot your phone and install thr superuser app from the market. Thats it then your fully rooted.
Thanks for your help again.
I hit volume up to flash and within about a second it shows update complete and asks to reboot device. I've tried both ways Yes and No, with No continuing on and doing the su.zip as instructed. It doesn't seem to do anything either way. How long should the PB31IMG take to flash?

I apologize for any redundancy but I am letting you know of this because i went through this whole process about a month ago and I want make sure you don't have to go through the headache that I did. Keep in mind that you must use Unrevoked 3.22 It Will Not work if you try to use 3.32 or any other later version. Also note that this must be done after downgrading your device to android version 2.2 (froyo) because 2.3.4 patches the exploits that unrevoked uses to flash CWM. Good luck and happy rooting!
