unable to alrer htclockscreen.apk in the systems folder. - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am completely unable to edit or even change the htclocksctern apk in the systems folder. I've tried just about everything from renaming it with root explorer to violently force uninstalling it with titanium. Nothing works. I've even tried this on fifteenth roms and they still seem to fail. Can someone please lend.me assistance. I can't flash any sops lockscreens because if this and I cant stand it plaza help!

Did you set root explorer to read/write permissions?

Yes. And after it changes to a bak file like how I want it to. But then I leave the app, do a reset, or even delete it completely and its back! As an apk file as if I never touched it? WTF

What are u trying to do with it. Get apktool if u want to decompile an apk

why is this here ?

wrong section, but anyways there is a zip floating around here that you flash thru recovery and it install the aosp lockscreen for you if no other methods are working. Ill see if i can find it and point you to it

Sounds like you don't have s-off in hboot. Without security being off editing the system is troublesome.

How to I get it off? That sounds like the issue because I can change other system apk files but not the lockscreen. I havent tried anything else like it though so I dont know.

go into recovery and see if it says S-ON or S-OFF at the top. If it says S-ON then your not fully rooted, and you need to find what software version you have and find the appropriate rooting instruction thread. Thats one thing that can definately be holding you up

Personally I would just redo all the steps to root your phone. If your having an issue removing an apk then the rooting of the phone somehow along the way went wonkers. If you can open a terminal app type "su" and superuser.apk asks to accept it and you have S-OFF. Something is a muck and I would re-root the thing. if you have 2.02/2.10 then unrevoked won't work for you.

Dude I got the whole thing taken care of in like 5 minutes no joke. I checked the HBoot and it said S-On so I googled how to turn it off in the evo. Google took me back to the unrevoked website and I read up on the unrevoked forever page and it literally answered all of my questions and solved them with a simple zip flash. I checked the HBoot just now and it said S-Off. I just tried to change the name of the Htclockscreen apk file to a bak file and see if it changes back. Still a bak file after the hot restart and I got the Aops lockscreen now.
I gotta hand it to not just the Unrevoked team but the entire android community as well. These guys are the best ive seen when it comes to supporting the end user and making sure that everyone has a good time. Their the best community ive ever come across online.
And thanks man, for the help.

I second unrevoked forever. Just a simple flash turns s-off.
Edit: didn't notice op said he got it all worked out. Thought It was a suggestion.

You really can't brick this phone as you can't do anything to the bootloader. Nothing short of pulling the battery while flashing the radio from the engineering image or something is going to brick it.
There have been no reports of anyone killing their phone yet.
Edit: will there be another method? You will have to go to a psychic forum to get the answer to that one.
actually there is a process but i really dont wanan tell anyone how to brick their mytouch slide.. just sees evil, ya know/

what a wonderful ally! Try googling for a video on rooting this phone. You'll find it there...or check out the ROM BIBLE for links...
Well, even though you should have looked first, here is the link to kingofyo's well done video of Eugene's method. After you have root, you HAVE TO flash the ENG ROM to DOWNGRADE your rom and radio. The link's in the ROM BIBLE, also. But make sure that once you're done with ENG and you flashed your chosen rom, make SURE flash the newest slide radio, also found in the "Bible". Good luck, Chuck...

i thought i read somewhere that the NEWEST mt3gs has been patched in our root method.

And just when I was beginning to lose hope, everything worked.
I was using my program with the "stop after one 'offline'" setting. I'll upload a copy so that others can use it. It's a C#.NET program so you'll need windows and the .NET framework. It should be placed in the SDK tools folder. When your phone is on or starting, click "Run" and it'll take you through a full cycle telling you if it's successful or not (except if you tell it to stop after one "offline", then you should run adb devices to check if it worked or not). If it doesn't work, restart the phone and click Run again once it's far enough through the startup. It's by no means magic and if your phone is like mine, expect to do it many many times for it to work. However it does make it simpler since you only need to press 3 buttons every time you cycle.
"Adaptive timing" makes the program start the loop a second and a half before it detected offline mode last time. I'm not sure if that's any good, but others said that it works better when you loop for as little as possible.

This worked for me on the first try when other methods didn't come through. I'm not guaranteeing it will work for you too, but maybe.... just maybe...
Just unzip the file to your root SDK folder with adb.exe then make sure you have installed .NET framework then run the Autorun.exe. Good luck.

Yup. I had a new one and the easiest way to go about doing it is by keeping the battery cover off, keep loop running and keep going into recovery then battery-pulling if it doesn't work.
It's not exactly elegant, but it lets you get a ton of tries done in a fraction of the time - I was basically fully rooted within 10 minutes of starting after I started using this method.

You can just dl the recovery then it flashes it for you, used it to root my g1 multiple times. Too bad it probably wont work on the MTS....Unless a dev could modify it for us...Would save a lot of trouble with dealing with loop or offline in rec.

I'm gonna give the autoroot a try, if it fails like the others did for me then i'm gonna wait for a new method.

Just got a new EVO, how do I root?

Yea Yea, I know the most common question, yet I don't see anything for the newest version (3.26.651.6)
I am not looking for any special Rom, just a standard Root.. A one click would be great, but whatever you guys recommend would be awesome!
THANKS!!

First, 3.26 is not the newest version. The current OTA is 3.29.
Second, Look at unrEVOked to root both 3.26 and 3.29.
Edit: I just searched. http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=787304
Just followed all that exactly, I have NO idea if it worked or not.. It went to the boot screen twice on mine and only once on the video and the video also showed it going into a dos type of screen "loading" things (on the phone)
MINE DIDNT DO ANY OF THAT..
This is nuts! How am I to tell if it is installed or not? The instructions dont tell you at all how to check!!

Restart the phone into boot loader. (Volume down + power.)
Does it say S-Off in the first line?
Yes? Then you should load into Clockwork by selecting recovery.
Also is super user app installed?
If yes to both, you should be rooted.
The dos screen was probably adb, just to show it was rooted.
If you open the tools folder with adb in it and type "adb shell" it should show a $ if its rooted and a # if it is not.
If you type "su" your phone should then show a superuser request, which also means you're rooted with super user access.
(I clicked though the videos but didn't see any dos screens. :-/)

learn how to use the search feature on this site, and read the instructions 3times before trying to do something you are not familiar with on your new phone. Rushing into things will only cause you problems...
if you show S-off in the bootloader menu then you have done the root correctly.
Goodluck.

i just rooted my evo yesterday using the instructions in his post. it's the easiest and quickest method i've found. hope this helps.
Yea I rushed a little for sure..
But Im coming from a CE phone and very familiar with it..
Here is the problem... and I notice with many many other people to.
I wound up doing the 1 click rooting, but it took some digging and searching to figure out I needed an additional program, (SU)
It doesn't mention on almost every tutorial that you need to get a file managing program and the SU program.
Sure it teaches you how to root properly, but to actually benefit from the root you need the other files.
Well, in anycase, Im happy got what I wanted and what I wanted to work, works flawlessly
Thanks guys!
Unrevoked installed SU for me.
You can also get a flashable zip from the forums here.
And super user is also on the market.
Oh, btw...
Congrats!

[Q] UnRoot successful... Except for Market

Good morning all. I unRooted my phone by running the RUU file on my computer with HTC Sync running, and it worked just fine. The only problem that I have now is that my Market does not work. I will try to download an app, new or previously purchased, and it will not download them. It says "Starting Download" and a few seconds later it will pop up in my Notification Bar that the download was unsuccessful.
I used the RUU posted in *OFFICIAL* RUU_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.29.651.5_Radio_2.15. 00.09.01_NV_1.77_CNV_rel by Whosdaman.
Am I missing something? Should I try it again with an older RUU file?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. If I posted in the wrong forum, please let me know. I figured it was relevant here, as it has to do with unRooting and such. LOL
settings - applications - market
then clear cache
I tried that trick already. Also, when I unRooted, I had the 1.8ish version of the Market. I tried all the tricks to get the updater to automatically update the Market, but it never did. I resorted to finding a vending.apk and doing it myself. I'm not sure what this does, but I also did the dialing of ##786#.
Sorry for leaving that out of the OP, it's been a long night at work and I'm ready for sleepy time. I try my hardest to figure things out beforehand, because I don't want to bother y'all with piddly little questions. I just couldn't find the answer for myself this time.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a noob. How do you do ##data#? Do I dial ##3282#?

That's not strange, it sucks! LOL! Well, I'm glad to hear that it worked out for you brother. Hopefully we can get mine fixed, as I have to take it into the Sprint Store on Monday. I can't post a link as its proprietary.

Then clear the cache again if that don't work.
If that don't work, then your out of options.

Hello IAmTheTrueUI, I have a question for you. What method did you use to root your EVO and using this RUU did you get s-on in your hboot screen? I rooted using unrevoked 3.2.1 and it gave me the permanent s-off. I also used the RUU to unroot(just want to be able to in case I need to take it into Sprint) and everything was stock except I still had s-off. I've been reading about the s-on tool from unrevoked, but it says you may lose root forever and I don't want to try it if I won't be able to root again.
This is for anyone that would like to answer: If I use the son tool from unrevoked can I get root back? Has anyone tried it and been successful in rerooting their phone? Thanks all and much appreciated.

yes i have mutiple times after you flash the son tool you can just run unrevoked again and gain root once again
EDIT: this is what it says verbatim on the unrevoked wiki "Once your phone is S-ON, you may lose root permanently if you install an official update "

No, no I did not. I didn't think I had to unless I used the unrEVOked Forever method. Am I still able to do this if need be?
I just unrooted yesterday using the s-on tool and PC36IMG to bring to stock and it worked great with no issues. I just decided to go stock for a while until the new update rolls out. As matter of fact that was my second time using that method because I wanted to be sure it would work if I ever had to bring my phone in to Sprint. Good luck getting it fixed!
I truly hate to ask, but could you explain that method to me? I'm about ready to Root my phone again and just flash a ROM that just looks like a stock ROM.

Don't worry about the market. They're not going to use it for anything in the store and you can always reroot and get it back into working order.
It's actually good that you leave it look not personalized. Just last week I walked in with my phone overheating and rebooting. After their guy spent an hour looking at my phone, he said he could hold onto it even longer and "probably fix it" by doing a factory data reset. You'll be able to sidestep this by just telling them that you already did and that's why it looks like it does now. In fact, you could actually try that now to see if it makes your market problem go away.

I used the method in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780141
There is a method there if you did not use Unrevoked but what I did was just download both of the files listed there to the root of my SD card>booted into recovery and flashed the s-on zip>used the power off option then booted into hboot and saw it said s-on>allowed it to load the 2.2 PC36IMG and it was done. I ran the lasted update after it was completed. I'm no expert so I hope this was helpful for you.

[Q] easiest way to unroot G2 to return

I own a T-mobile G2 and it has recently had a problem with the touch screen. I would not like to return it and get a new one because I am still under the warranty but i must unroot it first. I have tried to follow a few other posts about how to do this but none of them have worked. Now because of that i am still in cyanogen mod 7 but i have S-on. Could anyone lead me in the right direction
If you would, please post your hboot info so we can see where you are at and advise accordingly.

theunlockr.com/2010/12/01/how-to-unroot-the-t-mobile-g2-htc-vision
You only need to do Step III. Ignore the hex editing part because if you do step II, you'll notice that Cyanogenmod has edited it already so you can easily just drop the zip file onto your sdcard and run it from your Pwr + Volume Down menu. Very very simple if you're running CM7.
Ask if you have any questions, but it really shouldn't matter...it was a joke (after I spent nearly three days researching how to install ADB for a G2 -- It's very, very complicated and unnecessary)

nik.the could you please tell me the button combination I need to press once I put the stock rom on the SD root and turned the phone on (I know i got to hold vol down and power but that's it :S)
On another not it was such a painful process to root this Desire Z and with my past 3 HTC's needing repair I think I'll look at another brand after the life of this repaired phone ends.. this forum and dev support is the best thing HTC has going for it at the moment.
I went through that process (had to go through step II as well even though I was on CM), but it failed:
Upgrade process completed - stock rom got installed, bootscreen changed, etc, but i still have S-Off.
I really need to send the phone off for repairs today, any advice would be greatly appreciated...

The link works for me.
I used this method for the first time I had to return a G2 to T-mo. Worked for me.

I went through that process (had to go through step II as well even though I was on CM), but it failed:
Upgrade process completed - stock rom got installed, bootscreen changed, etc, but i still have S-Off.
I really need to send the phone off for repairs today, any advice would be greatly appreciated...
(also not sure if i used gfree or visionary, but inclined to say i used this guide (says it uses visionary/gfree):

I also still have S-off. I would also like an answer to this problem because I'll have to send this back within the week. I think I used Visionary first to perm root it then I used Gfree to unlock everything else.
From what i've read, T-Mobile doesn't seem to care that you have S-off, either that or they don't check. Many people have mentioned that they sent back unrooted phones still showing S-off and did not get charged for returning a rooted device.
I hope that's true. It gets a little tiring doing things like this and they never work out like I think they will. This phone is unrooted as far as I'm concerned. I can't do anything on it but I don't know if that is because it is basically unrooted or if it is because my power button is effed. When I'm in the bootloader can I not scroll down to recovery when the phone is unrooted?

i returned my wifes g2 to tmo last month. it was rooted, and the speaker quit working. just factory wiped and returned it. no big deal.
Well that's good news. I feel a little better but I'll still be stressing about that for a few weeks. lol
ok so for any1 on here need to get s-off back to s-on here is the stock part7back up
well sry can upload a .bin so if anyone know a way for me to getr it to you plz let me kniow
I think i still have the partition 7 backup. Do I just use gfree to get that back in there?
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Download the stock pc10img.zip and do it that way the use visionary to temp then use the part7back up to get s-on back and BAM back to stock s-on
And next time, it may behoove you to search. It would save you some time and avoid waiting for answers.
All of these ppl have asked this same question. I am sure you can find an answer if you have no already.

I'll give that a shot thanks. And of course I searched but found a lot of conflicting information and old information. Best thing to do on a forum if you are unsure of something is to ask. Multiple "how too guides" doesn't always cut it.

You can use gfree to s-off. There are detailed instructions in the wiki. Will need to be done on froyo so you can use the temp shell root.

Got your back buddy. I just did this today WITH A BLACK SCREEN. I couldn't see anything going on, but it's THAT easy.

So i followed the guide and i got pretty far but once i got to step 19 i got stuck the unlock bootloader screen never showed up. In the video it says that once i type fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin the unlock bootloader screen should instantly show up but it doesnt, if it doesnt show up instantly is something wrong or should i simply wait? and another question step 21 says to take the battery out while its booting and put it back in doesnt sound to safe to me should i disregard that? and just boot into the bootloader

Make sure you copy the unlock token file that you received via email to your ADB tools folder, then try the command again.

Well i was able to fully root my phone with s-off and i wanna know how can i delete the apps that came with the phone like the blockbuster app and sprint tv app i dont need the extra bloatware how do i remove it?
Use a file manager like ES File Explorer. Set and allow it for root access and have fun..... BUT FIRST: MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP. You don't want to delete something important..... Always make a nandroid. Make sure you get the Wimax partition when you nandroid too.

It's not hard. It's an option that should be built in to your custom recovery.
The consensus is to us amon-ra smelkusMod recovery, or just plain amon-ra.
CWM and TWRP are okay, but amon-ra style recoveries are the best and more thorough.
Just use the search tool for smelkusmod
Well that was easy i honestly thought that was gonna be a lot harder to do now to start deleting bloatware and hopefully learn how to download some roms. if i load a rom does it delete everything on my phone like contacts text messages etc?

Yep. I think you can backup your texts with Handcent SMS. As far as your contacts go, you should have them synced to your Google account.

So i got my phone rooted now and now comes the big question, how to pick a rom ive been looking at roms for the past couple hours and i dont think i have the time to go through all those roms just to test them to see if i like them anyone got any suggestions?
I won't suggest a ROM, but if you want a stock feel, grab any Sense ROM. You can find the best Sense 1.0-3.x ROMs in the world in the Evo Dev threads. AOSP is a different story.... But you may wanna get your feet wet with a 2.3.5 or 2.3.7 ROM like Cm7 or Decks. They give you full functionality as well as customization. I personally feel ICS left a sour taste in most peoples mouths as well as some of the early staged Jellybean ports and builds, but a handful of them were VERY good. That's just my opinion though. I personally run newer Jellybean ROMs for the simple fact that I prefer the updated look/feel/effect even without the use of things like 4g, camcorder and HDMI plus a few other small things. I think I laid it out pretty well for you so with that said, welcome and post up if you need help. The development has mostly ceased around here, but the Devs and users alike are always around to help out.
So i just got a notification asking me if i wanted to update my phone to android 2.3.5 but since i just rooted my phone idk if i should update but another thing i looked up my android version and im already on 2.3.5 is there any reason why it would ask me to update
