I uninstalled it three times using native android and titanium backup, still pops up its annoying menu for no reason. Doesnt show as installed anywhere. Cm6 latest rc.

Do you have root explorer? If not I highly recommend it....you can navigate to the apps in /system/app and /data/app and remove it permanently....just tap RW so it has permission to read-write
Sent from my rooted evo using the xda app....if I helped you, please click Thanks!
Just let it open and then hit the menu button. Inside the settings there is a check box to disable automatically starting the program. I had to do the same thing with Caulkin's latest rom.

Opening the Market installed from update.zip here on the foum, it just force-closes immediately.
Running CM 6.1.1 + Pershoot's 1.5ghz kernel.
Might it be Pershoot? Or the .zip? Is .apk better?

It won't let me change the permissions on /system (rest works).
Probably because I don't have the latest due to not having the market lol...
Can someone upload a newer Root Explorer?
"SU File Manager and Terminal". Best file manager you can buy, and it allows /system and /data to mount as rw in file explorer mode.
Sent from a Western Union telegram.
From adb shell or a term session on the phone, makes no difference:
Code:
su
mount -o rw,remount /system
If you still need the latest one let me know and I'll upload it to dropbox.

Alright, I removed it, but update.zip for the Market, once installed, still force-closes...
Does someone have a DEFINITE link to a working Market for 6.1.1?
I know there are at least 5 uploaded on this forum, and I'll start to try each one one by one since I can delete them now.
OK it failed again, but I installed the modded Gapps (was hoping to avoid having to install all Gapps, they waste resources) and the Market works.
Now to remove all the other crap...
edit: nevermind lol.....
Spoke too soon. It was working fine for a few minutes, then started force-closing constantly. Won't start now.

Question...can I open a rar file on my phone? I tried renaming it to a zip but when I extracted it there was nothing in the file
You should be able to with most file manager apps like astro or androzip.
Astro has the option but rarely works for me... maybe it's just my phone XD
That happened to me once. But on my nexus and I was playing around with ninja morph. Anywho I was running cm so I just reflashed it without wiping or anything with the same rom I was using and it put the browser back for me and didn't messing with the settings or apps. Maybe you could give that a try if worst comes to worse. Just if you have a theme you will prolly have to reflash the theme also. Hope you get it working though!

If I long press on the files I get an option for permissions. I can then select read-write options and then ok. But when I go back into permissions, they have reverted to their original state.
EDIT: Ok, I finally saw what you meant and installed the files, but no app in app drawer. I have rebooted just to be sure.
Go to were the browser Is downloaded to and longpress then select copy. Then navigate to /system and at the top of the screen toggle the button that says R/O to R/W, then select app dir and hit menu then paste.

I know this probably sounds crazy, but my EVO is rooted (has been for months) and I used to have r/w access on system, app, etc. Now I can not get r/w access (tried mount r/w from market, mount command in term emulator). I've tried multiple roms (Myn's, Ava, CM 6.1.1, CM 7 RC1, Sprint lover's) and can not get it to work. I used Unrevoked to root and unrevoked forever...Any ideas? (and yes, i've searched)
I know you said you've already used term emulator but you can try ES file manager, it's free in the market. There's an "experimental" feature where you can mount it r/w and I just used it to paste a widget.txt file in the system folder to change my power widgets in MikFroyo and it worked like a charm... Worth a try
you might want to check in the bootloader screen just to make sure that S-OFF.... maybe unrevoked forever didnt take for some reason..??.
Just throwing out ideas, good luck
Yup...i've tried that as well...and I am S-Off...let me clarify something though...I am able to write to /System, but not /System/App or anything else under system. Is that not inherent? or maybe i'm just totally not thinking straight and i need to go back to Android 101 lol
Try using root explorer this works great. Just press R/W button at top off screen.

^This.
I had the same issue. Root explorer works well.
Long story short, I like Sense but I ultimately prefer the default Android gallery, camera and sms apps. I was able to find a copy of Gallery, now I just need the Messaging app and Camera. Anyone have a link for those things? I searched but the results were a mess, and not what I was looking for.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
With the mms app, you can push it to the /system/app folder using ADB or a system level file manager like Root Explorer. The camera app goes to the same folder, however, there is more to it than that. Other items are involved and I don't know all that is needed to make it work. Anyway, you can download both from the links below:
AOSP MMS: http://db.tt/RNZoMm4
AOSP Camera: http://db.tt/J39Az2x

I put it in system/apps but it wouldn't load. Now my htc messaging app is gone. Ruh roh.

You need to set the permissions for it. Also, get in the habit of going into recovery and making a nandroid backup before making changes to your device. You can always extract the HTC SMS apk file from the rom zip file and push to the /system/app folder to restore it if you didn't create a backup prior to making the changes.

Yeah, you're right, I should do backups more often. How do I set the permissions for it?
Also, thanks a lot for the help, I really appreciate it.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
With a system level file manager like Root Explorer, maneuver to the /system/app folder, enable "mount r/w at the top of the screen, scroll down and locate mms.apk and then longpress on it. You will see several options with one of them being "permissions". Select permissions and set it accordingly:
Owner - Read Write
Group - Read
Others - Read
Afterwards, select okay and then select "mount r/o" at the top of the screen. You should be set.

That's not working for me.
Im using Warm 2.2 on an EVO. I downloaded the mms.apk and put it as is into system/apps. I rebooted and it didn't work, I deleted it and redownloaded it. Then, I changed the permissions after you recommended that, made sure root explorer set the directory back to r/o once I was done, and still no luck. I rebooted, and still nothing. Any idea what im doing wrong?

Are you familiar with ADB? Try pushing the file using the ADB commands. adb push mms.apk /system/app/
Or
adb shell
adb remount
adb push mms.apk /system/app/
Although I am currently using SalvageMod as my daily driver, I do have a nandroid backup of both RLS-5 and a rooted stock rom with the vanilla messaging app working in place of the HTC messaging app.

Oh ok I see, im just moving the mms.apk into the apps folder, I didn't realize 'pushing' meant something different

All you really need to do is delete the corresponding *.apk file in /system/app. I'm not 100% sure what the current android install process is, there might be some sort of registry system or framework installation that takes place elsewhere among the system; but deleting the .apk file has always worked fine for me.
-----
To do this you first have to have root access, which I assume you have. You then need to remount /system as r+w (read and write access, by default the /system mount is read only). You can do this with many an app from the Android Marketplace, just search for "remount".
This will then allow you to use your favorite root-enabled file browser, be it a terminal on your phone or something entirely different, to browse to /system/app and remove said *.apk file.
Let me know how you get on.
you must be rooted...and you can download any file explore to delete them
Edit: tolate he has better explanation

Titanium Backup is the best choice. Make a backup of it first, then delete it. That way it'll save you a headache when you delete phone.apk by mistake.
Titanium backup is bull**** when removing system apps... It just freezes.... Try root uninstaller (free from market).. It takes seconds to uninstall system apps...

bull****? have you tried the uninstall option and actually looked through /system/app? I'm pretty sure the .apk you just uninstalled has disappeared.
but anyway, there are a number of ways to do this as the others above have helpfully explained
