There are several key differences between the two devices, which makes me lean towards the Desire Z instead of the G2. One such difference is that the Desire have an FM radio tuner enabled while the g2 does not. Secondly, I read somewhere that the camera for the Desire Z features face recognition while the G2 does not.
The keyboard is also different. The G2 has 3 custom keys while the Desire Z has 2. Is that true? If so, then what is the third button on the Desire Z?
The screen type is also different on both device. Desire Z: Super LCD, G2: TFT LCD
Which screen type is better?
Does the Desire Z have a permanant root? I know the G2 does.
Flashing the G2 with a Desire Z sense rom might give it the fm radio, but does it also enable face recognition for the camera? And what would happen to the third custom key on the G2 where the Desire Z only has two to begin with?
Lastly, does the Desire Z work in the US, preferably T-Mobile?
btw, are there any difference, physical appearence wise?
Yes, there are many differences in software, but you can install a custom rom to erase the software differences.
Both devices have S-LCD screens as far as I know.
Both devices have permanant root, the same way, although the latest Desire Z firmware has yet to be rooted.
Flashing the G2 with the DesireZ rom will give you facial recognition, yes. As for the custom key, I don't know, I don't use em...
The only real difference between the two devices is the antenna - and here, if you're in the US, you might be better off with the G2, else risk getting stuck with EDGE speeds.
Thanks for replying. I think it be easier for me to get the G2 in the US anyways, haha. Still want to know what happens to the custom key if I flash the G2 though.
BTW, the mytouch 4g has a copy and paste feature similar to that of an iphone. does the Desire Z also have that feature? Is it a Sense UI thing or is just a myTouch thing?
Edit 2: If I flash the G2 with the latest Desire Z firmware would that unroot my G2? Or can I not flash it with lastest Desire Z firmware, or any Desire Z firmware for that matter, but instead a custom firmware?
Another question. The Desire Z offers additional features such as the when phone is ringing you can lift or flip it over to lower the volume or put it on silent, respectively. Does the G2 offer that? Or is it a HTC Sense thing? If it is a HTC sense thing, will the G2 have the feature if i flash it with Desire Z firmware?
If you get the g2 and download cm6 custom rom then you will get an fm radio tuner and all you need to make that work is a set of headphones.

Yeah, but does that enable the face recognition for the camera and other features such as the ones I mention above?
Not that I know of. It might work if there is a desire z rom out there. I swear I've seen one out there that you can load on the g2, but it could have been my imagination.

Virtuous?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=837042
The Virtuous ROM is basically from the Desire Z, just made to work on the G2 as a custom ROM. Everything works - WiFi Tether, BT, FM Radio, face recognition in the camera, the whole shebang. I've had it on my G2 since I got the phone and everything works.
As to the shortcut keys, those are planned to be fixed in a future update of Virtuous - it's a simple keymapping situation, nothing too crazy. Currently, I believe they lose their memory of whatever you mapped them to if you reboot. I don't really use them much, so it's not a big issue. All the other buttons on the keyboard works as if it was the Desire Z's keyboard.
The latest Virtuous is re-based off the latest Desire Z ROM (I believe, some Egyptian one) and works fine. The devs are super responsive and do an awesome job.

I just used my camera for the first time after loading CM6.1.1 and noticed a lot of upgrades to it. It might actually have face recog. Not sure though. Zoom gets bumped up from the stock 2x to 5x.

There are no numbers for zoom in the htc camera (The one the Z has) just a slider I think it's similar if not more than 2x zoom
So what are the advantages of Virtuous over the CM6, or vice versa? Does CM6 offer the features of Virtuous such as flipping the phone to make it silent?

Virtuous is straight-up HTC Sense. CM6 is straight-up stock Android, with a few tweaks here and there.
Honestly, dude, you can compare them on paper all day long, but until you try them, you won't know. It takes all of 15 minutes, 20 TOPS to flash a new ROM. Flash one, give it a week, then do a nandroid and flash the other one. If you hate the second, restore the nandroid and go about your day. If you love the second, keep it, and delete the nandroid. Done and done.
Will do. I'll test Virtuous first then CM6. Unless CM6 offers the Sense features I will most likely stay with Virtuous. Thank you.
EDIT:
"Connectivity:
Desire Z is offering 3G network with HSDPA at 14.4 Mbps and HSUPA 5.76 Mbps, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP, and microUSB v2.0. And, T-Mobile G2 has 3G network with HSDPA at 14.4 Mbps and HSUPA at 2 Mbps, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP and microUSB v2.0. It is obvious that both phones are shared for connectivity features, but Desire Z has a faster HSUPA network with 5.76 Mbps, while G2 only offers HSUPA at 2 Mbps."
Is this a hardware thing or software thing?

Wow! The camera is now working for the new sense.
The new official versions of those new sense roms will come out very soon (Robociks RCMixHD and Desire Z Port).
Now, I am confused :
To rotate or not to rotate?
Anyone can help me decide?
Personally I don't like the look of it in Landscape so I'll say HD
Not followed the camera progress for a while so if it's working I'll be rooting again soon
I was going to ask the same question!. I can live without 720p for the time being - seems a minor fix compared to actually getting the camera working in these ROM's.
I am currently running Teppics ROM and i do like it but i am very tempted to try another!
Can i just ask what is the rotating part you are talking about? - I have not kept up with the ports until the camera issue was resolved?

to be honest, the rotating kind of annoys me, so i'm a HD rom man.
the MT4G rom is also interesting and worth a look if you want to try something a bit different. really fast too.
Hmmm....it seems rotation is not to everyone liking..
720p is also a minor problem for me as long as I have the camera working because I need the camera for emergency use when I don't have my Panasonic FZ38 with me.
Is there a speed difference between Z and HD?
My Mistake, ignore this reply
*This*
Never use 720p as it's terrible on the Desire so it doesn't bother me - just a working camera will do the job!!
All flashed and working fine

I have tried Cynogen about two weeks ago, I like the speed but I got the impression that I was not holding an HTC Desire on my hand because the Sense was missing and Sense is a kind of a birth mark on every normal HTC Desire.
That is why I use Leedroid instead

Have you find any issues or bugs (the laggy 720p is already known)? Notification LED?
According to forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818392 : "Rom is cleaned of bloatware."

the bloatware was all the t-mobile junk and game demos/apps etc
DSP manager isn't working on this rom at the moment
(but the dev is very helpful and will probably try to fix it if you ask him nicely )
In my opinion the rom kernel isn't the best, I've tried quite a few over the weeks and coutts99 kernel remix is the best so far (now with audiomod to boost the sound)
there is a promised new release version later on tonight so if you're thinking of flashing this rom hang on for a few hours...!

I want the new sense badly
It doesn't have to be the same DSP manager as I use at the moment as long as I can adjust the audio quality as I please.
I have tried the HD Rom 3 weeks ago, but switched back to Leedroid because of the camera was not working.
Now the camera is working, I can live with the 720p problem.Although, I am still hoping that the 720p problem will also be fixed soon.
This would be my first post on XDA, so please excuse me if I am doing anything wrong (ie. wrong sections, etc).
I recently purchased the HTC video out cable which, by the way, I was extremely excited about.
Currently I've been flashing the cm7 nightlies- by far my favorite rom to date. Unfortunately to my despair, the video out cable didn't work with cm7. I only recenly read that the video out is not supported on any AOSP roms.
I assumed that maybe it would only work with sense-based roms and tried Uber Z with 2.2.....still no luck.
So far, the only ROM (out of three that i tried) that worked was Skyraider 3.5. Though this is a nice and stable rom, it is missing some of the features that some of the Evo and Gingerbread ports have.
So to my question.... Does the TV out only work on Incredible ports, or is there a way to get it working on an Evo or Gingerbread port (maybe through some tweaking).
Thanks in advance
I got the same problem as you. As far as I know it only works on incredible framework. Its not a "major" hardware function so nobody will really ever take the time to fix it for aosp, desire z etc.... Although the dlna function on z roms is a possible solution

- ROM takes up valuable internal space
- more RAM usage
- launcher is a joke (3 shortcuts, one of them is to put on shortcuts and widgets? yeah like i do that every 5 minutes)
When you see that the most presented features about newly announced HTC phones are "notification bar power control shortcuts" and "drawer that scrolls per sections", then you know they're just fiddling about. So Sense, please **** off.
I thought they said that they'll have gingerbread out for the desire around Q2 of this year?

Sense (in my opinion) is just bloatware. The widgets are a nice extra but the overall graphic make-over is unneeded in the Android revisions currently rolling out.
It may have been needed in 2.1 and 2.2 but 2.3 really doesn't need a new graphic layer.
The social network integration into the contact system is nice but nobody uses it the way HTC intended it to be used (I.e. someone calls you, you check the social network status and have a topic to talk about).
Facebook as a standalone app can also add pictures to your contacts.
I'm terrified about what HTC is going to do to Honeycomb! Imagine them throwing a Sense layer on top and adding that ridiculous pen input.
You don't have to use the pen with the tablet if you don't want (that's how I understand it anyway)
In some instances it would probably be good - i.e. drawing pics in paint or whatever - or for handwriting notes - I find it frustrating on notes on my desire at the moment, where on my Touch HD it was easy with the stylus!
It's nice to have the option anyway...
Would be nice to get the official update asap. I tried the gingervillian rom but it got stuck on the villianrom boot screen
Quit *****ing about Sense and buy an Nexus S! HTC has Sense and I love it! I'm really looking forward to get Gingerbread with Sense, but I really hope they skip the 2.3 and go straight to 2.4 Gingerbread
Agreed! , I have only had the desire for a week now and i love the sense ui. Just wanted to have a look at gingerbread
"Great news for HTC Desire family owners – it has been reported HTC will be releasing the Gingerbread (Android 2.3/2.4) update for the HTC Desire family after the new Desire S goes on sale.
Wow it hasn’t been officially announced by HTC, the information was apparently coerced out of an HTC rep at the Mobile World Congress this week. While it’s no confirmation, HTC has been proven to be pretty reliable with their Android updates and there should be no reason to why it won’t stay that way. The HTC Desire family includes the HTC Desire, HTC Desire HD and HTC Desire Z (hopefully this means the G2 as well).
With no other phones announced to have official Gingerbread updates and the Nexus S remains the only phone to have Gingerbread, it’s about time some phones started getting Android 2.3/2.4. At least Desire users aren’t still stuck on 2.1."
Not what Ubergizmo is saying. Keep the faith, people - HTC have been good to us.

I use Sense roms only. No one forces you to use sense launcher if you don't like it, every sense rom has default Android launcher too. I tried a few aosp roms until I found out that sense doesn't have to be used, but you still get the rest of the great stuff like name prediction when making a call, or a slight vibrate when call connected for example. Only thing that sucks is that we are stuck with 2.6.32 kernels at this moment.
About memory consumption they are equal or sense even more efficient, and the same goes for speed. You don't get aosp related bugs either.

Basically not 1 plus over AOSP (T9 dialing apps on market, vibrate when connected is in CM), EXCEPT you get more internal space with using a AOSP ROM. Now extra 200MB+ over a crappy interface ? Anytime.
Is there an ASOP rom that has face detection or touch to focus though? I am a heavy user of the camera and video and so far have been pretty disappointed at the lack of those in the 2.3 roms.
I would say that the email and text widgets are better thought out than the standard 2.3, or market ones.

Internal memory size is more than irrelevant with either of those. And the epickest are those who resort to changing partition tables to get moar internal space. Kudos.

I am coming from T-Mobile and the Vibrant so I am familiar with flashing/recoveries ect... I am however new to the procedures with CDMA and the Evo in general.
I have been reading for the past 3 days trying to educate myself but in the midst of all my education I noticed a lot of out dated information so I need some help.
I have rooted and installed the latest Amon Ra, backed up, read the stickies, glanced at the polls and different Roms. I just need a little help on deciding what a fitting Rom would be to begin with. Eventually like in the the Vibrant forums I intend to extend my education and experience to customizing themes and such. I had just recently customized the new Sony Launcher for my Vibrant. Also when I get comfortable I'll go into the experimental Roms.
Since I know it's random to just throw a Rom out let me give you what I am looking for.
-I definitely would like to keep functionality of 4g and gps. (main goal)
-I am not married to sense, miui, or AOSP I have used them all extensively. If I had a choice I would probably look at Sense or Miui before AOSP since I have been on that the most.
-I am not married to 2.2, 2.2.1, or 2.3
-I'm not a huge mono-color Themed Rom fan but if the Rom supports a nice theme that doesn't matter.
-I don't care about hdmi I don't use it.
-I don't care for the majority of the Sprint bloatware (maybe the flashlight lol)
Thanks for your time and any other noob friendly advice would definitely get a tap of the ol thanks button.
Well I say load up a CM7 nightly and enjoy. GPS, 4G, and now HDMI is working.

mikfroyo is a popular sense ROM.
I'm new to CM as they are JUST now getting into the Vibrant and SGS. I think I understand the nightlys as updated builds correct? Do these flash as updates or fresh installs? Would I have to reinstall everything every time?
thank you
The nightlies are basically stand alone roms. Eachy nightly just builds upons the last with updates, pactches, and new features. Ex: if you're on CM7 build 23 and want to go to 25, you backup 23, then flash build 25. Going from one nightly to another you don't have to flash. But for your first install of CM7, you'll need to flash the latest gapps.

You lost me here
First go here to get your nightly > http://mirror.teamdouche.net/?device=supersonic
On your phone, after you boot into recovery, do a clean install, wipe factory/data, cache, dalvik, the flash the rom you downloaded from ^
Then go here and download the latest gapps [gapps = google apps] You need to do so, or a couple apps will be missing/won't work, like the market for example. http://goo-inside.me/gapps/latest/7/universal/
After you download it, then place on your sdcard, wipe your cache and dalvik, then flash the gapps.
Download both files first then place on your sdcard before doing the steps.
Id say give myns warm 2.2 a try its so sick for sense, for aosp give cm7 a try. Of course with aosp, its still not PERFECT but pretty darn close. I switch between myns 2.2 and cm7, though i always end up going back to myn(sense 2.2) because i have yet to find an issue. Sense and Aosp users could argue all day but i never have to use/find fixes for sense but i do on aosp. 4G isnt perfect on cm7, and neither is GPS. If you want to be stable as can be with beautiful design i have shared the link below.

So far I am extremely happy with it as far as functionality. I do however have horrible battery drain. For example, currently I am at 87% and I pulled it off the charger 30 minutes ago. Basically surfed facebook and here.

I have been reading up on some other roms but I want to get my basics down 1st with the above issues. Vibrants were flash a Rom, optional different kernel, optional different modem and go. These Evo Roms and mechanics have a slightly more advanced learning curve.
Instead of starting a new thread I guess, unless i need to, what's the deal with the video processing? My Vibrant on the quad test was getting almost double the frame-rates stock and or Rom'ed.
To get your voice mail, either use google voice, or flash back to an older backup, verify it works, like have someone call you, leave a message, backup the app+data, then back to the current backup of your rom, then restore the app and data. And honestly don't be worried about quadrant scores; if your device is fast an d responsive, don't bother about it, they don't do anything.
Situation:Currently rooted (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912) and installed Virtuous Sense (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=837042). Although the Virtuous Sense DL link is dead on virtuousroms.com I scanned the end of the thread to find mirrors by other members.
Question:So now I run the 2.1 HTC Sense version the only problem is that on my G2 the "www./.com" button gets changed to a tab button (anyone have a fix for this specific button?), but I love it none the less. I've read (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=837002) which remaps the buttons but I only want to change the "www./.com" button not the soft keys.
Question:Now that I'm into the flashing rom scene I was wondering if there is a more recent and/or stable/bug-less HTC sense UI for my G2?
Question:Also can anyone explain the difference between Virtuous Affinity, G-Lite, Quattro, etc.(http://www.virtuousrom.com/p/roms.html)? Are they just codenames corresponding to each newer/updated HTC sense UI or are they completely based on other UI's compatible to the G2/Desire Z?
Question:Lastly can anyone confirm if this rom will work fully(including the function of the physical keyboard) with my G2? (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1432220)

that works on most roms and remaps a few things on the keyboard, though that sets the key to tab ...But to be honest im now Sure how to map it back to the default. maybe ask in there how to "undo" it? the developer is very nice and tried to help me figure out why it refused to map my keys. Maybe he can tell you what to do?
B)
they are just names for separate projects
G-light is the bare min OS, lightweight, nothing in it or on it. Non Sense, Gingerbread 2.3 with around 50-60MB of ram usage at boot. Speed and Battery are all its aimed to do (and be a phone of course).
Quattro is a full featured 4.0.3 rom
Affinity is sense 3 on Gingerbread 2.3 i think... (at least Version 2.5 is)
if you just click on the build pages they should have a nice description about the rom, its tweaks, its aim and its features
C) Not to that specific one.
and i know lots of people like the sense roms but... they just are too much Glitz and Glam for our phone IMO. IF you are going to run it, it will have lags, it will freeze on occasion etc (or at least every one i tried *sabsa, viper etc*, sabsa i even ran a 512MB swap... still lagged )
