[Q] HTC video out - which ROMs work? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This would be my first post on XDA, so please excuse me if I am doing anything wrong (ie. wrong sections, etc).
I recently purchased the HTC video out cable which, by the way, I was extremely excited about.
Currently I've been flashing the cm7 nightlies- by far my favorite rom to date. Unfortunately to my despair, the video out cable didn't work with cm7. I only recenly read that the video out is not supported on any AOSP roms.
I assumed that maybe it would only work with sense-based roms and tried Uber Z with 2.2.....still no luck.
So far, the only ROM (out of three that i tried) that worked was Skyraider 3.5. Though this is a nice and stable rom, it is missing some of the features that some of the Evo and Gingerbread ports have.
So to my question.... Does the TV out only work on Incredible ports, or is there a way to get it working on an Evo or Gingerbread port (maybe through some tweaking).
Thanks in advance

I got the same problem as you. As far as I know it only works on incredible framework. Its not a "major" hardware function so nobody will really ever take the time to fix it for aosp, desire z etc.... Although the dlna function on z roms is a possible solution

I have the video out on my deck in my Mustang for streaming Pandora while I drive. Wish it'd work on CM7.

[Q] Why No Love Anymore for Froyo?

I've said it before numerous times here, that I haven't had a very pleasurable experience with Gingerbread ROMs (i.e. those built off CM7 source). Every GB ROM I've tried has had their good and bad points, but many of those bad points span across them all since they're built off CM7. Not being able to play videos in portrait mode, Gmail not handling text properly in its margins, etc etc keeps me going back to ROMs built off Froyo. Specifically, I'm thoroughly enjoying Virtuous 1.0.1 (built on HTC Sense), as everything works perfectly in it.
Sadly, no one is making ROMs built off Froyo anymore. If you look back at any of the threads starting with [ROM], you'll notice there aren't many that don't have either "gingerbread" or "CM7" in their titles. ROMs that were built using Froyo have dead links or aren't supported by the developers anymore, so if you have questions or want to report an issue you can't. I wish I had the skills to develop my own ROMs for G2 owners, but I'm just not smart enough nor do I have free time to try learning how to do that. Are there any devs here who would consider building some Froyo ROMs? I know there are still some out there that we could use (Villision by TeamVillain, CM 6.1.1, etc), but they haven't been updated in quite some time.
Who here would prefer using Froyo over Gingerbread? I can't be the only one here who isn't totally sold on Gingerbread. Maybe once the source code is released so devs can build ROMs off it without using CM7 as a base, then I will really start to enjoy it.

You just might be the only one here looking for this, lol. Jk. Its the curse of moving forward with this tech. Noone wants to linger on old, they wanna be pushing into the future. Ive abandoned my froyo builds awhile ago. Deleted backups and everything. So sad.

PyroMod is pretty stable AND it supports actual A2SD. GO Launcher is also better than ADW and the stock Launcher.
If you like Virtuous you might want to give the Desire S ROM a try, it's the best ROM I've used on this phone so far.

I think you're missing the point of this thread. I don't want Gingerbread ROMs built off CM7 source (with PyroMod it's built off CM7-Nightly-31). I'm looking for more ROMs or more development of ROMs built on Froyo. Granted, that could be a really good ROM, but it's still going to have the underlying issues I explained in my OP since this isn't built off pure Gingerbread code. Thanks for the suggestion, though.
There are a few us that still prefer froyo to gingerbread... with CM6.1.1 is there any room for improvement though? I doubt it... when CM goes stable (very soon) and with the release of an official GB for the G2/Desire Z... it won't be long before all of us switch to GB for good.

I also prefer froyo too.. and I think to make cm6 perfect is get that unknown number issue fixed. Why can't they add the same work around they did with cm7 for it? I wish I knew how to make roms, that'll be my first.. and I don't think the number issue is a sim card issue because why would they have made that workaround??

That's so true... I forgot about that one. It's a pain to put the number in everytime you want to use the walkie talkie app or for looks on sms. I saw the name of the guy who supplied the fix for CM7 but am unsure of his user name on xda... if we could find that out, pm him, and add the fix ourselves to CM6.
Double post.

The unknown phone number is the only bug in CM 6.1.1. Sure it's fine after you enter it, but you have to do that every time you reboot the phone. I would love to find a fix for that.

I just want a stock gingerbread rom without the Cyanogen stuff.
A Nexus S out of the box!
Because it's old and Gingerbread has everything Froyo has and more? I'm not sure why this is even a question.

You might want to consider the "Stock Gingerbread".
I totally agree with you. Froyo Roms are more stable, has less problems and everything is working. I too enjoy the Virtuous Sense Rom. Everything works, I tried switching over to GB Sense, not so great with the bugs and other faults that I can't easily customize. its pretty saddening that Froyo Roms aren't being supported and updated. Virtuous Sense was one of the greatest Roms I used during my experience with the G2 and when I try some other Rom I always come back to it. Just really wish I knew how to make my own Rom. But as of now, when I just try to compile a APK with XML edits, I can't compile it into binary . If only a the Villian Rom Devs would reopen their Froyo Roms.....

What I hate is all these roms with sense in them. I hate sense and al the sense roms i've tried have issues and never work completely. GingerV1.5 is the most stable rom I have experienced.

GingerVillain is a good GB ROM as it was built off an earlier version of CM7 (before CM7-RC2 was released). Are you having issues with Sense based on Froyo, Gingerbread or both? There are issues with the GB versions of Sense, but the Froyo ones (i.e. Virtuous) all work wonderfully with almost zero issues. I personally haven't experienced any problems with my phone running Virtuous, just the once-in-a-blue-moon unable to wake the phone with the trackpad.
I completely agree with the first paragraph of the OP. I swear, I could have written it myself.
The nerd in all of us wants the "latest and greatest", and that is fully understandable. But the fact of the matter is that GB has not been officially released yet for this hardware. All the custom GB ROMs are ports, and therefore buggy. I tried various CM7 builds for a while, at first I liked CM7. But eventually the minor bugs all got to me, and I'm on to Virtuous (but using ADW EX instead of the Sense launcher).
Aside from the bugs you mentioned, the camera button on CM7 is really laggy compared to Virtuous (or even the stock Desire Z ROM). And the GPS issue is a constant worry to me. I was able to fix it on RC1, RC2 was fine as-is. But the fact that some people have issues, others don't, and it seems to be radio related, has me thinking its a locational problem. And since I travel frequently for work, it has me less than confidant that I will have a working GPS when I really need it.
Also, there is really not a whole lot different in GB aside from some more consistent theming and a better keyboard. Sense already polishes a lot of the ugly theming in Froyo, and I use Swype anyway, so those GB benefits pretty much are moot for me. I'm sure there are performance enhancements and other small fixes in GB as well, but the performance difference seems to be negligible to me.
This is obviously a matter of personal taste. But I don't think the OP is anywhere near alone, judging from the still decent traffic on the Virtuous thread.

I'm sure that eventually there will be an official 2.3 release from HTC/TMO, once that's been made root-friendly that should be more like what you want. I actually wouldn't be surprised if it were already ready to go but is being held back until HTC gets their Sense 2.3 updates ready.

[Q] HDMwIn and Sense 2.1 + GB

Hey all -
Quick question.. has anyone gotten either of the HDMI mirroring apps to work successfully with any of the Sense 2.1 + GB ports (i.e. MikG, Synergy, etc..) I know you can flash the custom kernel, but seeing how those were not built for Sense 2.1 it does weird things to my phone..
Thanks in advance..
How it works with EVO 4G ? I try but it shows me phone is not connected any one help

Don't think its possible since the functionality doesn't exist. it's a kernal from the Evo Shift, which lacks an HDMI out.
take a look at this

the guys who are working on HDMwIn have some great stuff coming out soon.

[Q] Good ROM for the Wife's EVO 4G (in which Video conferencing works - gtalk, etc)

I keep up with the forums for equipment I own and use (unfortunately, NOT so much on my wifes), but although I've read through many topics on this EVO 4G - my wife's phone, I'm still not completely sure which ROM to go with.
What would be a good ROM for my wife's Sprint EVO 4G? I have custom ROM's on all of my personal devices (phones and tablets) but I haven't done anything at all to hers and just realized that video doesn't work on her gtalk (among other things). Is there a good custom ROM (close to stock, that is rooted and has gtalk video working)?
Thanks in advance for the help, I'll keep reading through the forum in the meantime (I still haven't even rooted her EVO yet - although I've got her on CM7 for her B&N Nook Color and she loves it)!!
Cm7 works really well with evo4g and has 4g working. Looks like she might be used to it from nook so give it a try. If she wants she can also experiment with MikG which is a sense rom. IMO those have been greatness. Also Decks 1.3 is good, like Cm7 but he gets rid of the bloatware.
Don't forget to hit thanks

CM7 is very good though I did have some issues with stability for some reason. I now use the The EVO Classic Sense Redefined by tommytomatoe but use the version without Sense since I was never a big fan of the overlay.
Good luck
Doc
I never got skype working with CM7. I don't know about gtalk.
I am using Ice Cream Sense rom as a daily. 4G. skype works. better battery life than running CM7, in my experience. And of course GPS works too, which is borked half the time with CM7. If your wife uses google maps for anything (or everything), you probably want to be careful about breaking GPS.

Yes, she definitely uses google maps, so Thanks for the heads up! I may look into the ICS rom then. Do you know of anything that's 'not' working in ICS? Video works fine with Skype?
I installed MikG on my wife's EVO month's ago, and it's working well for her.

wifi craps out when using hdmi mirroring?

I finally got an hdmi cable so I could use my old Evo as a Netflix and gaming device. I flashed CM7 and the SavageZen kernel and I'm having a problem where once I start mirroring over hdmi the WiFi goes to hell and can't maintain a connection which makes Netflix totally unusable. Anyone else have trouble like this?
Now I'm trying Decks 1.3 with the kernel it comes with and it does the same thing. Does this happen to everyone or do I have some sort of hardware problem? Arrrgh
Mason kernels work beautifully for me. Also set the cpu to max in the HDMwin app settings. It will only be set to max while you have it running in the back ground.
same problems even with the mason kernel. This is a total bummer.
Could be your TV or port. Try flashing a sense ROM with a mirroring kernel to see if it will work at all.
Way ahead of you. Just put a rooted copy of the latest OTA on the phone. The normal hdmi capabilities are working fine. I'm watching YouTube on the tv over WiFi now. I guess I'm just having software trouble with AOSP roms and kernels and my phone is really picky. Too bad I can't use Bluetooth gamepads with Sense roms....
Guess I just need to keep searching for a combo that works for me.

Use a Wiimote if you have one. There are a few apps for Wiimote bluetooth connectivity and you can have different saved setups for the buttons. Works well with sense roms as long as you're rooted.

I've never seen a wiimote work in Sense. That's the only reason I'm putting aosp on the Evo anyway. Do you have a wiimote and have made it work with Sense?
All the Wii emote apps say they don't work with the htc sense ui. That's because of htc's crippled Bluetooth stack. I'm not exactly new at this, I've been frustrated by it for years.
Unless you know something I don't know then I need to be on AOSP.
However, it is my understanding that the latest devices like the One X with sense 4.0 no longer have this problem, so lucky them!
Phew! I think I got it sorted finally. I went back to the official CM 7.1 rom and coupled with the mason kernel my WiFi isn't dropping out any more. Looks like rom choice was playing a huge role here.
For sense try bluezime but Rwiimote works for non sense.

Oh I know how to use a wiimote on non sense roms. I just use the "Wii controller" app.
I could swear I've tried bluezime on sense before and it didn't work. I'll give it another whirl on my evo 3d for kicks.

So out of curiosity I tried bluez IME again with the latest rooted stock rom. It still doesn't work even with the HID enabler. Just as I remembered.
However, much to my surprise it DOES work on my Evo V 4G running Sense. I think HTC finally unborked the bluetooth somewhat in the ICS Sense builds.

I'm having the same issue. Just rooted for the first time, but loving it so far. I'm running MikG 3.11 and Anthrax 2.6.38.6 #4 on my Evo 4G. HDMI mirroring works great, but not internet connection to use it with. Any idea if I should I change my kernel, or my rom? I'm new to this, but enjoying the learning process. Much thanks!

Try an AOSP rom with Mason kernel. Don't use the A-word kernel. Check all your settings and make sure everything will stay awake and keep screen set to always on. I use HDMI mirroring on a daily basis and have never ran into a wifi issue.

|Q| ICS/JB Roms, and HDMI out (kernel)

I have been flashing roms day in and out. Love them all but recently I have found that I really like the MIUI roms. Very Smooth, like the look and people get rather confused when they see it
I have a problem though, and its with all the ICS/JB roms that are coming out. Not a single one of them have a functional HDMI out.
I use this feature of my EVO 4g on a daily basis (or at least I did until I started using the ICS/JB roms)
I have already flashed every kernel I could get my hands on (Mason, Tiamat, Evervolve(sp?), stock(bad idea))
Does anyone have a kernel that I can use with a ICS/JB rom that will allow the HDMI out to work?
Unfortunately HDMI is currently not an option for ANY ICS or JB ROM due to there isn't any kernel that has that available!
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk 2
Or working 4G. Or working FFC or camcorder or even back camera. But most ICS/JB ROMs are still works I progress.
