There are a MANY free coverters out there.
I use PGC.net to dump a DVD and either MEGUI or StaxRip to convert.
MEGUI is a bit difficult for beginners, Staxrip less so.
If you are new to video encoding try RipBot or Vidcoder.
In fact, you know what? Just get Vidcoder and use the preset for iPhone

I quite like DVD Catalyst - used it since I was ripping DVDs to watch on my HTC Touch HD - as it really struggled to play normal avi's - the desire doesn't have that problem when playing through rockPlayer - but DVD Catalyst is still nice for the Desire

check www.giveawayoftheday.com as they often do dvd converters for free I use winx ultimate video converter absolutely brilliant

I use Handbreak - it's easy to use and it rips DVD's perfectly

Handbrake works great, but if you're on Windows, try Vidcoder like I mentioned b4. It uses the handbrake library but with better GUI and options.

ThankYou all for your input.

So what settings resolution codec and player on the desire should we use?

Best dvd compression software to watch movie on Dash?

I haven't tried it before. Is Dash fast enough to watch full screen dvd? Which software do you guys use to compress dvd?

DVD to .mp4
I use SUPER http://www.erightsoft.net/SUPER.html it does not Rip from DVD, but once ripped its the best converter around and its FREE. A full length movie of 2 hours converts to a file of about 200MB @ 320x240 and flawless playback.
Thanks both. I used DVD Encypter before to rip DVD. It will be awesome to watch on Dash on a long trip.
I also use DVD Fab Platinum (w/mobile option) it's one of the better ones. It's not free but there is a trial version ( i think) to see how well it performs 4 you. http://www.dvdfab.com/
I also tried Spb Mobile DVD. It compressed DVD to 320*208 25fps xVid, which played flawlessly by CorePlayer. It's not a freeware, but seems easier to use.

Bupah what settings do you use in Super when encoding to get such a small file size with flawless playback?
Videora
I use Videora. It is for Ipods, but it does a QVGA resolution .MP4 that you can play in TCMP. You have to rip the DVD to your hard disc a special way using DVD Decrypter. There is a very easy to follow guide that links from inside the program for the method top do this. Oh, its free also.
Convert to Divx mobile with PocketDivxEncoder, and play the files with CorePlayer
DVD Wizard

Watch video on Desire

Guys - what is the easiest way to convert DVDs to watch on Desire? Is there any good free tools out there and what format/settings should be used for best pic?
I got the AnyVideoConverter, but as far as I can see it only does in 640x480 format... please advice a newbie! Thanks!
HTC Touch HD Video Convertor v1.2 allows you to covert output res of 800x480, i haven't tried it yet but I already read someone tried it and work great for HTC desire.
Is conversion necessary? Can the Desire play .vob files right out of the box or with some app? That is, unless space is a major concern...
(I don't actually know the answers to those questions, mind. Just wondering.)
I was wondering the same thing. Any links to the best software for converting?
MP4 For HD works perfect and it's really fast. You can find it here:

Anyone know if it has a DiVX compatible player? It'd be a total pain to convert all my vids...
You could always try the Videora Android Converter. I use the Videora iPod Classic Converter for my.. well, for my iPod Classic. And it works like a charm!

Doesn't appear too, was rumoured the phone would be updated to support it though.
Personally i use badaboom, GPU encoding is much better then CPU. Doesnt do 800x480 but 720x480 is good enough.

Hi! I use it and output is great (quality, sync, etc) for Desire
Regards, folgui.
I use doubletwist for converting avi files over onto the phone when syncing.
I use handbrake for my video converting, works very good. The settings I used are somewhere on an other topic about video converting.

playing avi

is there any way to play avi fles on the desire ???
try aplayer or mplayer. Android is super-dog**** for video playback apps, even winmo tcpmp ***** slaps Android and that was 3 years back

You'll get a better result by converting to MP4 first from what I understand. My Desire should be delivered today so haven't tried it yet but have some videos converted to MP4 using the HD (Blackstone) video converter, you'll find on here somewhere, waiting to be tested.
i also convert mine to MP4. Redkawa is the only converter i've found that keeps the audio in sync when played on the desire though. (g1 settings, single pass MP4)
yxflash plays avi/divx videos. i think it's a trial though - limited to a certain number of minutes playback before you have to register.

A good .avi to .mp4 converter?

I'm looking for a good converter which converts .avi to .mp4. I was using this one for my Touch Diamond 2 but I think the bitrate and stuff could be higher now when I got a Desire with better specs.
I used this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=467112
I use Format Factory, it does a pretty good job and is free.

Look at Xilisoft software. Not free but good for pretty much any video/audio convrrsion.

I have compared different converters and I recommend Convert-tune to download and convert video and audio easily.
It converts music and movies, and also burn files on CDs. The converter is
easy to install and use.
when using Xilisoft program i had many audio/video , synchronization problems ...

Stick with that converter. It's awesome and there is no point in increasing the bitrate because the screen resolution and dimensions are the same. Increasing the bitrate will not show higher quality pictures.
AVS Video converter 6 is hands down the best converter i have used. Its not free, but its a good investment because it pretty much converts anything you throw at it. Even .mkv.
I use Handbrake on the Mac, think there is a PC version as well, works great.
+1 for Handbrake
You can pretty much just use the iPhone preset. You might need a laptop with some horsepower but it's worth using the h264 codec to reduce file size

You could just use RockPlayerBase to play the AVI instead of waiting for it to encode?
Tried using handbrake but neither Rock or the native player will recognise the m4v or mp4 file - any suggestions?

Why would you wanna use RockPlayer to watch .mp4? Just don't encode the videos.. leave them .avi or whatever, RockPlayer will play it. If you have .mp4 from beginning just use the inbuilt player.
Because I'm trying to save space and cram as many in to the memory card as I can - it's for a 6 week holiday so I want to take as much as I can. 700MB / file is un-necessarily large for a phone?
Well, I got a 32GB SD card right now and that's alooooot of movies.. I don't know what you got but converting to mp4 isn't saving so much space.
I thought a 700MB filecould be halved quite easily without any noticeable loss in quality, perhaps not? I want to take about 30 files with us, so a 16GB card or two won't be enough. We'd need 20 - 25GB of micro SD storage! With that much to carry around for an extended holiday, any saving of space would be substantial. The native player does seem to play the .avi files the files are currently stored in, however it seems a waste to keep them in their current size for such a small screen?

Impossible unless of course the "video" happens to be a plain black image

I know you want to get 10 posts, but try posting in newer threads, instead of resurrecting 3 year old ones.
Get mx player and play a avi movie and it starts laggings so I change the codec at top right corner to sw and the video was playing perfectly no lag.
