Guys - what is the easiest way to convert DVDs to watch on Desire? Is there any good free tools out there and what format/settings should be used for best pic?
I got the AnyVideoConverter, but as far as I can see it only does in 640x480 format... please advice a newbie! Thanks!
HTC Touch HD Video Convertor v1.2 allows you to covert output res of 800x480, i haven't tried it yet but I already read someone tried it and work great for HTC desire.
Is conversion necessary? Can the Desire play .vob files right out of the box or with some app? That is, unless space is a major concern...
(I don't actually know the answers to those questions, mind. Just wondering.)
I was wondering the same thing. Any links to the best software for converting?
MP4 For HD works perfect and it's really fast. You can find it here:

Anyone know if it has a DiVX compatible player? It'd be a total pain to convert all my vids...
You could always try the Videora Android Converter. I use the Videora iPod Classic Converter for my.. well, for my iPod Classic. And it works like a charm!

Doesn't appear too, was rumoured the phone would be updated to support it though.
Personally i use badaboom, GPU encoding is much better then CPU. Doesnt do 800x480 but 720x480 is good enough.

I´ve tried this (a guide posted) and this (Mplayer smartphone port).
Unfortunately, none of them worked. So.. is it really possible to watch RMVB files? If someone says so and points me to the right direction, I´ll keep Dexter and Supernatural updated!

Not sure about playing RMVB but you could always convert on computer to MP4 as Dexter is worth the conversion time
Will look into RMVB player but think above will be option.

To be honest never converted an RMVB as back in the day there was no way except silly long ways, i stick to AVI as have an hardware Divx player, will have a look into Xilisoft as then that would be one less thing to think about
"The smiley shouldn't be formated" lol

Yes... Xilisoft is the one... However, let me say that playback experience is by far much better in Coreplayer than Mediaplayer. I haven´t tried TCPMP, so, I don´t know if it works on it. (I just thought that this is one less soft to install)
Anyway.. about my initial issue, NO! Excalibur can´t play RMVB. But it can play Mp4 (I should know it...but... anyway).
Once it can play Mp4, use Xilisoft video converter and Coreplayer to watch it! Or... if you own one... use iPod to watch videos on the go!
Regards!

Yep CorePlayer should be defacto video player for everyone have not found anything come close as TCPMP was the early version of CorePlayer "Freeware" the codecs are old and not as refined as CorePlayer, WMP just sux @ doing anything, thanks for the info regards Xillisoft what's it like for AVI to MP4 quality wise?
8GB micro SD cards are very cheap in Hong Kong - so I don't bother coverting files to mp4 or whatever that's compatible with HD. Instead, I just copy the whole seasons of TV series into HD and use it as PMP (my Archos 605 just died)
Getting Divx Mobile was easy enough (just have to register & download). But I noticed that it takes a while (lag) to skip. Also, when in full screen, it was grainy (pixexls) - not sure this is due to poor quality of original file (downloaded bt)...
Any other suggestions? I don't mind paying - but want the best video quality possible.
p.s. don't worry about battery life either: US$20 for a spare battery and I'm never far from a outlet (HK is just so tiny)
try coreplayer..
Try Coreplayer. its the best video player ive found so far. much faster then divxplayer
coreplayer is best. And htc's graphics are excellent

Like all the above posts....Coreplayer, the only app you need to view those common video formats.
I have found coreplayer to be very laggy myself....Media Player plays my HD files with no issues at all......I never could understand all the fuss
Coreplayer does not support grafic accelerator of HD. Native video player is better with suitable video properties.

I agree...!!!
actually I am a bit confused (very confused I think...)
I downloaded that Encoder - but it seemed like a tool for converting the formats (not a software installed on HTC to play movies) Correct me if I am wrong. So how does that help in anyway?? I am using core now (found a cab version with flash support - so it seemed convenient so far)
I'd like to try Encoder - I have seen many knowledgeable ppl talking about it so I must be missing something here... Why does converting help?? What does "native player is better" mean?? And how does Encoder make use of HTC hardware accelerators if it isnt even installed on HTC????
pls help...

Latest HTC devices have good video capabilities but 3rd party video players do not support this hardware (yet).
Album or Windows Media Player are meaned by native video player. But they have also some limitations naturally. You should have compatible frame rate and bitrate to get maximum performance.
So, the best way to see good video on Touch HD is to convert any video file with proper settings and watch it by album or Windows Media Player.
now i get it... tried it last night on SD setting. My 350MB file converted into 200MB file and played beautifully on Album.
thx guys for helping me see the light
I am trying to find a good player for .avi, .mpeg4, etc. for my TP2. I used to use TCPMP but when I installed it on my TP2 it errors out at launch. Any ideas? Is there a newer version of TCPMP that is compatible?
Thanks!
The WMP supports avi and mp4. And it works!
Hmm, it does not work for me. That is strange.

Once installed you need to go into Options/Settings... and choose the DirectDraw page, then tick the box that says "Use blitting instead of overlay".
Try Core Player. It is amazing... it is also running via network (wifi)

The impression I get from reading these fora is that CorePlayer may be the best but that it's still not actually particularly good, as it is unable to benefit from any of the hardware acceleration provided by the Qualcomm chipset - this being HTC's fault for providing dodgy or non-existent drivers. It seems like this is a major weakness of the TP2.
Actually, from what I remember, it's not HTC's fault per se, so it's not really fair to blame HTC. The thing is that Qualcomm sold their chipsets but different price ranges for the same chip. The difference being that if one paid more then they'd get the drivers necessary to take advantage of other features. Basically one has to pay for the drivers. So HTC's player includes hardware acceleration, but just because it seems they have gotten the drivers for that feature doesn't mean that they can pass the drivers on to software makers (just like you can't legally pass your copy of a game on to a friend). But neither can we say it's Qualcomm's fault as it was their pricing plan. I think somewhere it was stated that it was a misunderstanding at some point. But yeah, that's the gist, and why if Coreplayer is to work they have to reverse engineer the drivers or deal with Qualcomm directly.
What's wrong with the built-in free WMP? It plays 640x480 MP4 (H.264) videos smoothly.

Let me get this straight... Your saying it's not HTC's fault because you think they didn't know they were buying chipsets without drivers from Qualcomm. To me it sounds like they cheaped out and screwed consumers.
I highly doubt its a misunderstanding and I'm not afraid to place blame because I'm more than certain HTC knew what they were doing otherwise they wouldn't keep ordering more of the same chipset to produce new phones.
If this were really the case I would assume we would see slightly different hardware or drivers included with CDMA versions since they would have had time to figure this out since everyone else already has.
Gave up Core Player for the Touch phones. It doesn't play movies at all well. Just use the built-in WMP or the HTC album player.
Download the Encoder GUI and just re-encode your movies. Let it run during your bedtime. Easy!

Re-encode it using the Encoder GUI. Why fight it?
Don't think there any mobile phones that can play xvid videos at 800x480 smoothly. Even the latest i8000 only supports video playback at up to 720x480.
Even if you get an iPhone, you will still need to convert it to in order for you to watch it.
My solution, either re-encode it, or play a lower resolution xvid (i think i tried it once at 622x288, can't remember and it played ok in core player).
I'd go with Coreplayer too as it has the widest range of codecs available BUT if the bitrate of your clip is too high your phone won't like it whatever player you use (but you probably knew that anyway...)
Hi Everyone I have found that GOM Encoder does an outstanding job of converting any movie to a playable format for the Rhodium

Hey, good find! Will give it a try for sure! Cheers!
Core player has some nice features, but benchmarking h264 playback it was somewhat lacking compaired to windows media player mobile....
95% of the time u will want to/have to re-encode to make it smaller or lower the bitrate to something it can play, so codec support shoudnt be a choosing factor...
I get WMPM playing smooth with H264(1300~ bitrate) and ACC audio(stereo at 128 varieable bitrate) at 800x416. which is dame nice quality on the small screen
I'll start a thread on encoding with MeGUI to get you all started
But I can't get full screen on WMP

Do you know what I'm doing wrong? After not being able to use WMP on my Universal (WM5) because it could not do full screen - I load a movie into WMP on my shiny new Touch Pro 2 and 'full screen' isn't - it has a dirty great big border round it! The video is smaller then the screen but WMP is set to stretch to screen. What gives??

wow that done the trick for me, awesome playback imo
I tried the Touch HD encoder and used the advised settings in the thread.
Playback is smooth in HTC Album, but the quality seemed fuzzier than my normal method.
So back I go to:
Coreplayer
Videos encoded using PocketDivXEncoder with the following settings:
HDTV preset
Video quality: 70
Audio quality: maximum
Resize the video so that the video width is 400 pixels, maintaining the aspect ratio.
Anybody know any good video converters for the desire?

Can any one recommend software for ripping DVD's for use on my Desire?

There are a MANY free coverters out there.
I use PGC.net to dump a DVD and either MEGUI or StaxRip to convert.
MEGUI is a bit difficult for beginners, Staxrip less so.
If you are new to video encoding try RipBot or Vidcoder.
In fact, you know what? Just get Vidcoder and use the preset for iPhone
I quite like DVD Catalyst - used it since I was ripping DVDs to watch on my HTC Touch HD - as it really struggled to play normal avi's - the desire doesn't have that problem when playing through rockPlayer - but DVD Catalyst is still nice for the Desire
check www.giveawayoftheday.com as they often do dvd converters for free I use winx ultimate video converter absolutely brilliant

Handbrake works great, but if you're on Windows, try Vidcoder like I mentioned b4. It uses the handbrake library but with better GUI and options.
ThankYou all for your input.
So what settings resolution codec and player on the desire should we use?
