So, for the past month and a half, I've been having some serious overheating issues with my E4GT, whether I have it rooted and a custom ROM flashed, or running stock. It has now gotten to the point where the phone smells..funky, near the camera on the back. Now, Sprint labels the battery as the culprit...twice now, they just give me a new battery saying the old was swollen, and that it is what was causing it to overheat. Completely ignoring that I state it smells like fried parts. Now, the batteries were all normal in appearance, mind you, not a bit swollen. No water damage either. It gets almost too hot to touch the screen at times, not dangerously, but uncomfortable. I only use the USB cable and wall adapter it came with, as well. ..Yet, battery life actually isn't terrible, go figure. This overheating happens whether I am using the crap out of my phone, or just leaving it sit idle.
Any ideas what to do from here? It makes it almost too hot to touch the screen at times, not dangerously, but uncomfortable, especially if it happens when I make a call. I only use the USB cable and wall adapter it came with, as well. I've made a habit of unplugging it when it says it's at a 100% charge, too.

So, if there are any ideas as to how I can get them to just replace the damn thing without spending 100 through insurance..lay it on me. I've searched the forums for a solution to this particular issue, no avail. Hell, if it takes purposely bricking for them to pay attention, then I'll do it, but that's on the back burner. Far far back.

Go to a different sprint store....they're being dicks, never had that issue at any sprint store in my area. You have a fault phone and it needs to be replaced.

I had the same problem and so did my woman. Do yourself a favor and download Calkulins battery saver E4GT ROM. I don't know how but it keeps the phone cooler. Seriously. Haven't had any over heating issues since. EL29 stock kernel always causes mine to heat up. Hope this helps

Do you have insurance? You could always just brick it to the point where all ya get is the blue led of death and bring it in and tell them the thing just suddenly went off on ya and when you tried to turn it on this is what happened.
Do NOT try to damage it using water because they have these stickers inside the phone and on the battery that change colors when they come in contact with water so sprint will know, and laugh in your face.
my phone also gets very hot like in 120 range
You could send it to Samsung under warranty, and when u go to sprint make sure its a corporate service center and not a 3rd party "authorized service center". When you go in don't mention overheating at first start off with "my phone smells funny, like burning plastic and when I pick it up I notice the screen is very warm/hot to the touch and sometimes has issues with the touch responsiveness" this should get their attention away from the battery and more towards the internal issues, more than likely its the SOC that is overheating if it's hottest near the camera area of the phone

My GSM Galaxy Nexus has been experiencing random shut-downs, especially when it is in my pocket. I haven't noticed any problem with overheating and I tried rooting it and installing the latest version of ICS 4.0.4 directly from Google's source.
I also have Lightflow installed, but I doubt that it causes shut-downs, since I've only heard of reboot problems.
I suspect it could be a problem with the battery because, whenever this happens, the charge level goes down by at least 5% or more.
So, does anybody know how to remedy this? Or will I have to exchange the phone?
This has happened to me a couple times. I never know how long it's been off. I'll take it out of my pocket, and it's just totally off. I hold the power button and it starts up. Very frustrating bug though... as rare as it may be.
I'm still stock, unrooted 4.0.2 using the extended battery on VZW. Holding out for the first update, then we'll see...
Just so you know next time that happens grab a log and post it. Also, if you battery is down, try wiping stats, that usually brings it back.

Sorry for being such an ignorant and a noob but by log you mean a crash log right? Which is the best way to obtain them?
This happens to me about once a day. I'll come back to the phone and it will just be off. I aslo have root and lightflow installed. What's the best log to get?
It was the battery for me...
This was happening to me too, almost every time I took my phone out of my pocket, it was turned off.
After a couple weeks of troubleshooting and googling, I figured out what it was. It was the phone getting "twisted" in my pocket from sitting and standing. If you twist your phone like your're trying to wring water out of it (not too hard), the battery loosens just enough to cause the phone to lose power. I fixed this by taping a thin piece of foam to the inside of the battery cover to keep the battery in place. Makes the back of phone feel firmer too.

I've leave the debug mode on for the day, so last time it happens to me i've save a "abd bugreport" to a file.
Is there any clue that can be found in this file to know why the phone shutdown ?

EDIT : I have YAKJU 4.1 stock ROM, no root, no unlock.
I noticed a while ago before seeing the videos that if I banged my GN against the table a certain way against its bottom left corner that it would shut down. I solved that like the poster above by putting an extra something in between the battery and the cover (paper). That solved lots of the problems I had with my phone shutting down when I put it down on hard surfaces. There is though, I believe, a second software caused issue for some of the shutdowns. I still pick it up once every couple days to find that it's off. I've banged it, tapped it, twisted it, and I can't get it to shut down physically like that anymore.
I'd like to know more about how to pull the logs and find out what's going on.
I've had my Nexus for three days now, and I've had several shutdowns. Two of them were during a phone call, and the other two were during a workout using micoach app. The twisting/pocket option doesn't apply to me, because during the calls I was holding it in my hand, and during the workout it was strapped to my arm. I also have lightflow, and will uninstall to see if there is any difference. Running totally stock unrooted 4.1.1. This is making the phone totally unreliable, and I will return it if I can't get this fixed soon.
Every would have had that problem due to how poorly Samsung constructed the battery slot for the battery to fit it. What I did to fix that problem was take out the battery. Even from time to time rage quit and rip the battery out while the phone was on. And put it in, and push it a bit up toward the camera. That fixed my battery issues. Others have put a foam thing (sorry I don't know the name) where the battery slot golden things were so the battery wouldn't move. You can also try that.

I uninstalled Lightflow after posting my previous message, and since then have not had any random shutdowns. All calls are performed flawlessly, and I've used micoach several times again (this was when the problem was most obvious) without any problem. I haven't changed anything else, so I'm pointing my finger at Lightflow. I'm installing it again to make sure it was the cause, will report back.
Regarding the battery problem, I've been looking at it and can't see how it can become loose. It is really tight, and there is no spare room to add any kind foam. Maybe thye have tweaked the design on later batches? My GN was built March 2012.
I had the same issue and it was caused by an app. The app "Boid", a twitter client still in beta, was causing the reboots. The reboots occurred once or twice a week, they happened on 100% stock ICS, 100% stock JB, custom roms also.
Like the above poster, I uninstalled LightFlow and am no longer having any issues. I'll try and get in touch with the developer and see if there are any logs I can get to help.

Hello all!
I have noticed that recently, my phone has been doing a very odd thing while charging. When it has been plugged in for a little while, and the screen is on and in use, sometimes the phone will crash. When it crashes in this manner, the backlight on the screen is turned on on full brightness, the screen gets a yellowish hue, and horizontal black bars start appearing on the screen. More black bars keep appearing until I reset the phone (hold the power button), and then there is no evidence of any screen problems. I also generally have to unplug it for a while, as if this happens once, it generally happens multiple times until I unplug the phone and wait. These problems seem to be occurring at odd times (a lot at night, before I am going to sleep), and have just started happening (I also recently made the upgrade from the latest version of GB to 4.0.4). I have had this device for about a year now (the second device, the first one had a physical design flaw and was replaced), and I am out of warranty right now, so any help would be appreciated!

That was happening to me (for a weird reason, my devicewas new, its seems that problem is more common in the rogers version dont know why) but, if your problem is the same problem that i had, then, just install stock ICS with oneclick (dont remember the name very well)

Superoneclick? That's the closest I found, and it doesn't say that it supports the Glide. And, I am running a fully stock version of 4.0.4, unrooted and everything. I might need a little more help here, haha.

Isn't that a different version though? The build number on that is UCLG9, not UCKJ3 (which is what I have right now).
I am not sure, but, if with that your problem persist, maybe is hardware, but I only do that. When I did it, that was the latest version, now there is another version but not sure what is it

I put it down to hardware fault, and was successful in getting it replaced under warranty. The new one has been totally fine.
Hopefully yours isn't a hardware issue - but from how it sounds it very well could be

I really was hoping it was a OS issue, as it hadn't ever done this on GB. If I flash a new rom then, it would be fixed?
Also, I too noticed that my phone is abnormally warm when it does this. I do have a cover on my phone, but I noticed that it seems to be centered about on the horizontal center of the phone, about a half-inch below the camera. If this is related, what do you think it is?
My phone did this as well. Luckily it happened just before I rooted. The att guys said it was a hardware fault and that fault also killed my battery. I'm assuming it was a short. It started as something infrequent, but it eventually escalated to the point the second I turned it on my screen turned completely green and got really hot.

Didn't have to be charging to do it. Could have been on the street holding it. (I was on GB as well)

Your issue sounds similar, but slightly different. Mine only happens while I am charging it, and it has only done it since a while after I made the upgrade to 4.0.4. Although, they sound similar, and my phone also gets concerningly warm, so I have no idea if it is the same thing or not...
If it's out of warranty, then you have nothing to lose by doing a backup and a clean ROM installation, which is what I would do. I guess if you do it when fully charged and while the phone is cold you should be fairly safe, especially if you use a small ROM. I've found the latest M3 10.1 ROM installs fairly quickly, so that might be worth a shot even just to see if it fixes the problem.
The only risk you're taking is that the phone might die and get bricked in the process if it's a hardware fault, so I guess it's really your call.
EDIT: On that thought, perhaps experiment with seeing if you can charge after leaving it in the fridge for about 15 minutes? It's a trick we used to use to recover data from failing hard drives, if you get them cold enough they can work for long enough to get away with things

I like that idea, as it should fix the overheating issue. However, the times that it actually has this malady aren't regular - it seems to happen more at night, but not every night. I could try putting it in the freezer when it does it though, and see if it works. If it is overheating, could it be a hardware issue then? I also noticed that my battery that I have in my phone does appear to have a slight dent near the bottom, and it is only happening when it is charging, so I am wondering if it could be a problem with the battery? When I pull the battery out after it has done this, the battery itself isn't that warm, but the phone is, so I'm thinking it isn't the battery, but does anyone else have any ideas?
No one ever seems to respond much about hardware issues on the note 2 forum but I'm going to give it another go. Started out a few weeks ago with major battery issues resulting from what I think caused it, was an overheating issue. (fell asleep laying on it charging and screen lit for about 6 hours) The phone started by shutting off when the levels were anywhere from 20-50%. Since then I've tried 3 new OEM batteries and swapped to a different working charge port flex. I jumped from cymod to the skynote rom before swapping out hardware parts and it seemed to make a difference at first but didn't last long. Since going to skynote, I've tried running with greenify, juice defender and no power saving at all. Tried normal performance and tweaked performance. The other night I had my phone off and charging and it reached 100% on the power down indicator, when booting the phone up, the status bar battery indicator said 81%. The next night my phone actually stayed on, or atleast displayed what I felt was the proper percentage, down to 1%. When the indicator went from 2% to 1% I received a notification to unplug my charger, that my battery was full...the charger was not plugged in when receiving this and as soon as I finished reading the notification, the phone shut off again. I am at a loss because I have no idea what's causing this. I own an electronic repair shop and have no problems soldering new charge ports on if needed but I'm starting to think there is another controller on the daughter board which may control the communication between battery and phone. Any ideas?? Anyone....hello

First off yes it's VERY BAD to smother any device (6 hours ouch) that's constantly running. Especially with a battey power, being if the device isn't breathing it's gonna over heat. It's kinda like blocking the radiator on your car while your racing down the highway. What do you think it going to HAPPEN problems!!
You mentioned a few battery monitoring apps! [emoji107][emoji107][emoji107]
Get away from those apps cuz most of the time they're wrong or reading the battery level wrong! I'd recommend BBS go here»»» http://goo.gl/0TeXcR
But from your post seems something in the phone, might be something minor got over heated to much which is causing your problems.

You need to recalibrate your battery. You can figure out how thats done. And you probably cooked your silicon.

The only one that ever offered anything that wasn't a typical response to someone who knows nothing about gadgets, was steele. As many times as the posts were viewed and only getting one response, which most of the time was an unrelated answer, is pretty sad. When noobs have questions about flashing a rom, there are always 30 people there ready to tell them or berate them, when there are countless forums out there to find their own answer. And no, only two posts had answered my hardware questions and the replies were not any kind of a valid response. I apologize for assuming anyone here had experience with internal components. How about instead of responding like a troll, you change my mind and actually teach me something if you're so qualified to give tech support.

Thanks for your input, but I'm looking for the contoller that would have been damaged. Do you know of a motherboard breakdown link, where I could find out which ics controls charging/battery/phone communication or shutoff. I've soldered new contollers in iphones before and I'm assuming there has to be a similar part which controls current shutoff in the galaxy line. Thanks again.

Thanks. I've done the calibration a couple times with new batteries and flashed quite a few roms on and off. I'm pretty sure something is cooked, but most of the time, if the ics can be identified it can be replaced with a new one. I'm looking for a motherboard breakdown of all soldered parts and a legend to go with it. ifixit is where I usually go, but can't seem to find the exact breakdown of what part controls current flow and shutoff.
Xda is mostly about tweaking the phone software and very seldom about the hardware, and rarely about the ic components. Sorry that your question is several paygrades above my skillset.
I have replaced the mainboard for about $80. But of course you already thought about that.
I think that sort of info would be proprietary info, that Samsung would not publish out to just anyone. Unless that specific piece was patented.
I can see them not giving a damn about older models of phones whose technology they would not reuse. But Galaxy stuff in production, I would imagine they would go after someone's scalp that had it.
For info like that I usually grab whatever numbers I see on the board, throw them in every search engine I can think and hope something pops up.

You probably hit the nail on the head with that. It's just so frustrating when I know it can be fixed if I could just figure out which part got fried. Usually soldering a new charge port fixes a lot of hardware glitches when it comes to connectivity or charging/decharging, but of course on this phone it's not happening. Thanks steele

They have a little Contact Us applet that pops up on the bottom of the screen. Hopefully you get lucky and they reply back to your question.
It's a long shot since it's their business to do the work for you.
I haven't used them but they recently just saved an xda member with a torched IMEI. Remotely.... That's killing me, I have to know how they did that..

My phone was driving me nuts, ( I have a hard time dealing with not being able to troubleshoot electronics), and I thought that might be a way to get someone to help me out when I was in dire need.

I dropped by tablet battery down once and now every so often the screen flickers with vertical lines and this is followed by loss of network and the thing reboots.
I've read this to be a battery problem.
Warranty is still active but I've rooted it and my Knox counter has gone up.
What do you think XDA? Just get a replacement battery?

If you have the ability, since it was dropped, I would open it and make sure connection is tight to battery and screen. Then if it still acts up, get a battery. Several people had battery issues out of the box. All it turned out to be for a few was a loose connection.
i was thinking about that but i'm afraid of voiding warranty. do i even still have warranty? due to the knox?

Well ive opened it up and tightened everything i can see and it seems to work ok for a while, when the charge gets to around 20-30%, the tablet flickers, all mobile connections are lost and 75% of the time, reboots.
So i went ahead and got a new battery. Now this was worse kinda. At random moments, like unlocking the screen, or replying to a message, or maybe just a high cpu load event, the tablet just turns off and is unable to be powered back on without first connecting it to a power supply like a wall charger or a power bank.
The time and date will be reset once its back on and ill have to wait a few minutes before the auto network time setting kicks in before i can use something like whatsapp.
Anyone got any clue what might be causing this problem? Thanks in advance, helpful xdarians.

I'm not by any means an expert or repairman of any kind, just so you know. I'm thinking maybe a loose connection at the terminals on the board the battery connects to or if they use a separate board for the battery to connect to and then to the main board it may be somewhere along in there. Maybe a loose wire going into the tab that connects to the prongs. It sure sounds like something isn't making a good connection. Sounds like a load gets put on it and it and that bad connection can't handle the load.
Might just be you're going to have to send it off...
You may be right. Sounds like a particular connection which does higher load or something. Once i put the tablet in power save mode, the symptoms never reappeared. I dont notice a drastic slowdown in the tablet either. Probably am prolonging the inevitable.

I am facing exactly same issue what you have described and am in same situation, have tripped Knox on my Tab S 8.4.
I can see that you have been able to suppress the behavior by putting it to Power Saving mode. Have you experienced flicker and reboot since then? I am planning to take it to Samsung store not sure if they will honor warranty, did you tried that?

nope, ever since the Power Saving mode solution, it hasnt flickered and rebooted yet. and my warranty was expired by that point so i didnt bring it to the shop. no noticable reduction in performance so far

I have seen this problems on 2 tablets 10.5 and 8.4 the connector where battery is connected on motherboard gets loose which causes reboots and flicker
Solution in my case was resoldering that connector again
i had the same problem, opened up my tablet, just disconnected the battery, cleaned the contacts, pushed it back, made sure its nice and snug, put it all back together and now battery doesn't drain as fast, no more flickers and reboots!
hmm. i'll have to give it a try. you think this may be something to do with condensation?
Sorry for the bump, but I'm having this issue as well on my S 8.4. Custom ROM. The thing with me is that it's not consistent. One day, it will do it a few times; others, no issues whatsoever. I'll try the suggested if it gets progressively worse.

Unfortunately our home's tablet (Tab s 8.4 Wifi) has the same problem.
It never did weird whatshowever, but when I flashed a custom rom (which went perfectly smooth actually) the screen flashes and the tablet reboots sometimes.
Now it weird that this never happened before and only when I flashed a custom rom it began showing this behaviour.
I am affraid of opening this tablet, and I guess because of the custom rom there is no warranty left anymore (or can this be bypassed by some terminal trick?)
Also I question myself if this is not a software issue, and that it can be fixed with software or so?

I might have some surprising news to tell about this "issue".
I saw some unboxing video's and saw at what place the battery connector was placed. It was some sort of a 'push to click' system.
So what I did was the following:
I pushed the tablet at the place of the battery connector. I tried this at various places until I heard a *click*.
Now I don't have this issue anymore. Jay!

I started to have the same issue on a Tab Pro 12.2, presumably after the battery has lost considerable amount of its energy. Normally I remember this tablet to have a dazzling 10+ hours of usage time. Just after some serious usage time of more than 2 years this issue started, along with increasing temperature and finally reboot. From time to time Android gave a warning message about overheating. From time to time charge values drop big values at a time. From 45 to 20 or 80 to 50. Seems arbitrary. This was happening even when I was on stock, then I switched to some Android 6 stock port from some other tablet. Still the same.
I believe the battery needs replacement. (That's obvious after 18 months, I just mean blinking is related to this) Hope I can find a high quality one cause there are several garbage batteries.
