[Q]Tester for best kernal? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This might be crazy but is it possible for an app to scan your evo (or whatever android phone you have) to see what kernal would work best for your phone like netarchy or ziggy or king?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

No, and keep in mind, if you want to try an "older" kernel than what ships with 3.70.xxx.x you could possibly run into wakelock issues, camera issues, etc. Too many reports of this happening to be experimenting unless that's your "thing". I need my phone to work 100%, all the time, every time.
If you're on 3.29.xxx.x or 3.30.xxx.x based roms, you can try most any kernels and see which perform best.
***UNLESS you have hardware v 004 and then supposedly if you will run into camera issues.
So, IF you're using a 3.70.xxx.x based rom, wait until the dev's get the source for the new kernel series and mod them up for you.

Thats a great idea for a app.

In my opinion I am using Damage Control 3.5 Final... but you have to fully rooted (have unlocked your NAND) for this ROM to install. So if you used toast's method to ROOT you should be fine. I have excellent battery life and havent had any problems witht this ROM. Wifi tether works (I used it yesterday to jailbreak an iPad at bestbuy).
I'm defiantly full nand unlocked.does that rom have sense installed? I use launcher pro. Also hows your ram on that one? On fresh typically have about 175-200 free.

Yes it does have Sense.. .and Internal Phone storeage is about 300MB before I installed all of my apps...
I use CyanogenMod, the nightly builds (it's gotten a lot faster than RC1 since a few days ago).
Personally there are some aspects of Sense I miss... Mostly the text select for copy/paste, since vanilla Android's implementation sucks, but overall I prefer CyanogenMod more, hands-down. Also, I trend to average around 180-200MB free RAM.
As far as I know, if you don't want any trace of Sense on your phone, CyanogenMod is your only real choice, since it is built from the ground up on Android's sourcecode.
But with any other ROM, Sense can be disabled.
The two I'd recommend would be CyanogenMod or Baked Snacks. I haven't tried Damaged Goods though... I'll have to try it out.
Oh, and just so you know, CyanogenMod currently doesn't have 4G, if that matters to you.

for DC 3.5 you can very easily Ban sense in DCONFIG if you dont want it. I ban all sprint apps, sense, and launcher in the config so that all i am left with is launcher pro.
This lets me have my 4g, hdmi, fm radio. Still lets me have 2.2 and gets rid of sense. plus DC is an amazing rom anyway.

CM7 sleep problem.

Checked my up time and it's identical to my total on time. Checked partial wake usage and no rogue apps that I see. What could he the cause of my problem?

Give us some more details, when did you flash? How did you flash? Have you installed any apps lately?
My fault. Sorry. I'm running that CM7 19 VERSION. I am using the red theme from the market. I can't use juice defender simply cause it doesn't support gingerbread yet. I'm using 60676 prl. Can't even find the pri but I'm assuming it's still 1.77 unless cm came with 1.9.
Flashed it 24 hours ago. Haven't switched kernals cause I have had horrible experience with anything other than stock with myn's. I reinstalled all my apps and kik messenger is on lockdown with autostarts. So therefore it doesn't eat up partial wake time and doesn't open unless I do it manually.

Give any new rom at least 2 days to fully "get settled".
What kernal do you recommend? I'm not too familiar with cm.

Stock, until you get those issues ironed out. "Stock" sounds lame, but CM7s kernel is far from stock
After that, I use savaged-zen with much success. Though everyone will tell you that kernels behave differently with different phones. Spend a week trying a few for like 2 days at a time and see which one you like the most Also, play with the governor settings (under settings/cyanogenmod settings/performance). I personally use the SZ kernel with the "interactive" governor and find it to be the best balance between speed and battery life.
Interactive all the way man!! DATS DA BEST!

You need to be more specific. Like I said, flash nightly 40, the most recent is generally better, for starters.
Idle what's the difference between them nightly # but ima do what u say, and an specific kernel to run with it?

Alright, personally, I use the 3.3.7 kernel; though you'd be fine with the built in kernel.
The difference between the nightly numbers is that the newer ones have more tweaks, and performances enhancers, ect over the old one. The nightly builds upon the old one, to make it better, and generally fix bugs.
So I can't use Netatchy's kernels with it? I'm just trying to get my camera working again

NO, do not do that.
netarchy = sense kernel
CM7 = AOSP rom
You should never mix the kernel and rom type. aosp rom needs an aosp kernel, and a sense rom needs a sense kernel.
Iight well ok ima try and find out a kernel or something that gets my camera working

The equipped kernel or Tiamat will be fine. I'm on nightly 40, on 3.3.7 as I stated, no issues.

40 worked fine for me personally. 41 gave me problems...xD Just high battery drainage. But yes, download between 39-41.
fyi, the nightly builds should be more for people who know more about programming, they are test builds where they are expected not to work correctly. the CM RC are mostly worked out with few glitches, and CM STABLE shouldnt have any problems, if you are new to development i would suggest to stay to RC or Stable....

I've been on Y for a few hours now, and GPS works fine for me. A few people have reported that GPS isn't working for them, but AOSP GPS always seems a bit flaky on some Evos. My own experience with it is that GPS works perfect though. Wireles Tether works fine on this ROM. I haven't been using the Wireless Tether app lately though, as the built in tethering feature works perfectly on 3g and 4g. find the native tethering under menu>settings>wireless & networks>tethering and portable hotspot. From there you can use wifi tether or USB tether, both work.
As far as known issues, I have 0 (so far, it's only been a few hours). The only bug that had been annoying was the phone going to the lock screen after hanging up a call, but that issue has been fixed in Y. Flash it and give it a shot.
Which would be the better deck rom to use? And what kernal? Im not sure how to do any of the gps fixes ive been hearing either, lol

I would use the latest build, which is 1.2y. Keep in mind that these are betas (although 99.9% stable and could be called stable, IMO) 1.2x and 1.2y both have the GPS fix incorporated into the build, so in theory GPS should work out of the box (it does for me). You *should'nt* need to do anything special to get GPS to work. As far as the kernel goes, every phone reacts a bit different with kernels, so it's kind of trial and error. I would suggest giving the CM kernel that comes with the ROM a try for a few days. It works extremely well on my phone. I also run Savaged Zen 2.2.1 CFS, and that performs well too. GodmodeV9 is a great 'no frills' kernel. It doesn't have sbc or havs, and is meant to be stable and have good performance, which it is and it does. Just give each kernel you try a few days to settle in before passing judgement on it. It takes a little bit of time to be able to tell how it's ultimately going to perform. Sometimes it makes a big difference by adjusting the governor settings too. Good luck
Hey keep this post in mind because ill come back here and post more questions... Thanks... Ive been flashing so many and im just tired. I know its basically a trial and error but that gets tiring. Thanks man...

Read up on and try each one and see what other people are saying till you find the one that your phone likes
I agree with penny. You have to try them out yourself.
I'd recommend sticking with the default MikG 3.1 kernel (which is the latest HTC kernel) for a couple weeks so you get used to it. Then jump to lionfish and see if you notice a difference in battery life and responsiveness. Personally I don't notice a difference in those areas, but others have been wowed by the latest HTC kernel. Some people say it takes a couple days for a ROM / kernel combo to "settle in." Your phone will have to rebuild the cache and dalvik, and it does that over time as you do different things on your phone.
Lionfish is not based on the latest HTC kernel since they haven't released the open source yet, but it has other features of course, like HDMI mirroring.
Thanks guy ill check them out
