[Q] Installing Gingerbread - issues - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

All,
Following this tutorial http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AqvnLs6FOis I tried to install gingerbread on my Desire. Here are the steps I've taken.
- copied gingerbread rom onto root of sd card (renamed gingerbread.zip)
- rooted my Desire using visionary+
- installed rom manager and flashed with clockworkmod recovery
- rebooted into Recovery (comes up as Android Recovery System <3e>)
- select "apply sdcard:update.zip" - when I do this I get "failed to verify whole-file signature"
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

The apply update.zip is for a special name update. Try the one below it that says aplly update from sd card or something like that ( the other one that looks similar). You will go to another screen and choose gingerbread.zip

First of all as you apparently haven't idea what you are doing to your phone.. dont!
If you want to continue the reason you get this error is, that your phone is not rooted at all. Visionary is for desire hd and desire z. On desire you must use unrevoked from your computer. This will install clockwork mod recovery, so you can run custom roms.

Pretty much, the process is:
1.) Download and run UnrEVOked 3 (check out the desire index in my sig for the link). This will root and install a custom recovery.
2.) Copy the gingerbread ZIP to your SD Card somewhere, i advise against renaming it to update.zip for multiple reasons (so as to avoid confusion mainly).
3.) Select "Choose ZIP file from SDCard to flash" (it is similarly to this, i cannot remember exactly the name off the top of my head).
Do not choose to "Apply update.zip", this is a different function.
Don't listen to people who tell you not to fiddle with your gear, this is the only way to learn - by experimenting. And fortunately for those of us who are willing to experiment, we have access to a large pool of experience and knowledge here at XDA.
If you have any other questions, I recommend checking out 42Turkey's Ultimate guide to root (the link is in the desire index as well).
Josh.

unrevoked solved the issue (eventually after installing HTC sync).

[Q] A fully n00b question on rooting (unrEVOked 3.32)

Hi all,
technically, this is a question concerning unrEVOked version to use. In Turkeys' ULTIMATE Guide to Rooting v42.1.1 everything is nicely described. However;
My concern is, there, entire procedure is described with unrEVOked 3.21 (provided in links inside post). Can I use unrEVOked 3.32 from HERE? Or should I use explicitly 3.21 version?
Thanks in advance,
jukyO
Depends on your phone. For some people 3.21 does the job, and have issues with the latest one. If you have PVT4, then you should go with the latest, if 1/3 Then go with 3.21.
Also if you have PVT4, then AmonRA is recommended over CWM.

Thanks for answering quickly.
My phone is PVT4 with erasesize 20000.
If I understood correctly, unrEVOked comes with CWM recovery built-in, or? How to "load" AmonRa, if CWM is inside unrEVOked?
Download this:
http://files.androidspin.com/downloads.php?dir=amon_ra/RECOVERY/&file=recovery-RA-desire-v2.0.0.img
Start unrEVOked but before connecting your phone go to File and choose 'Custom Recovery' and select the file you just downloaded. Then continue as normal and it'll use AmonRA instead of CWM (which yes, comes with unrEVOked)

If I understood correctly:
0. put "recovery-RA-desire-v2.0.0.img" to root of SD card
1. reflash and root with unrEVOked
2. boot the phone with vol - --> Choose "Custom Recovery"-->select "recovery-RA-desire-v2.0.0.img"
3. after step 2., it is possible to backup and restore with AmonRa, correct?
Is it OK like that or did I missed some step(s)?
Thanks for helping,
-jukyO
No...
1. Start unrEVOked
2. Choose custom Recovery and select the AmonRA file
3. Connect phone and let it run
That's it. Nothing on the SD card

Great! So this one covers my question. Thanks everyone for helping out!
However, one more thing to clarify concerning this image:
in Root Guide - Pt. 3 - Flashing Your First ROM it says:
3) Use the TRACKBALL to scroll down to where it says Backup or Nandroid or Backup / Restore. Then select Backup and wait for it to finish.
Now we need to wipe your phone. Whenever you flash a different ROM you should Always do this, when you are updating the ROM you should check on the release thread for information.
4) If you are not on the Main Menu in recovery, hit back a couple of times to get there. Then, use the TRACKBALL to navigate down to 'Wipe Data / Factory Reset' and accept the scary warning to wipe your phone.
Now we can flash the ROM! Ensure you have downloaded a ROM and it is on the root (Not in any folders) of your SD card. The flashing process may take a few minutes.
5) From the Main Menu, scroll down to and select Install zip from SD Card and then select Choose zip from SD Card then select where you put your ROM and wait for it to complete. Then, select Reboot System Now to reboot into your shiny new ROM!

Since this is written for original unrEVOked with CWM inside, is the procedure same (or similar) for phones having AmonRa recovery instead CWM? Any instructions available?
EDIT: got it. Its pretty plain simple from AmonRa Recovery.
Thanks,

[Q] OTA updates and Fonic

I have had an unbranded Desire HD for about a month now, and I have a Fonic (Germany) sim card installed. However, I do not recieve over the air updates. Is there a way to get the updates some other way? Preferably without rooting and all of that. I'm a noob in that area. Thanks in advance.
What is your current Android software version?
My software version is 1.32.405.6
I've tried to check for updates manual, and the phone says up to date. Since it doesn't appear that I get OTA, what's the next best way to get the phone update? Preferably the most user friendly noob way.
Your software is upto date. The update HTC released was removed as it caused a lot of problems for a lot of users.
The most user friendly way would be to simply wait.
If your sure you want to get the update you will need to root your DHD, remove the security (S-OFF), flash a custom recovery and finally flash either a custom ROM that has the updates, or the bugged HTC ROM.
It may sound like a lot of work but if you read through all the relevant guides in the Dev section, you will soon be up to speed. Plus should you need it, you can ALWAYS ask for help.
you got it all there on Leedroid topic (v 2.0 in this case)
Q: How do I flash this ROM?
Requirements
* You will first need to ROOT your DHD.
* Apply Radio S-OFF/, S-OFF
* Install Clockwork Recovery: The easiest way is to root your phone as above and download Rom Manager from the Market, which has an option to install C'Work Recovery.
Once you have done as above
1. Drop LeeDrOiD_HD_V1.Xx.zip on you SD card
2. Check the MD5# matches the one in post 1#
3. Ensure you have more than 40% Charge & Unplug your DHD.
4. Boot into recovery (either via rom manager or by powering up with the vol- button held)
5. Select "backup&restore" then backup your existing ROM. (usually referred to as a "Nandroid" backup)
6. If you want a clean install, scroll to "wipe data/factory reset" (this step is recommended but not always required)
7. Select flash zip from SD card
8. Select the LeeDrOiD_HD_V1.Xx.zip
9. Wait for the flashing process to complete and reboot
FYI. It is recommended that you flash radio 26.04.02.17_M2 to work the LeeDroid base 1.72 Roms effectively, failure to do this may result in poor battery, Wifi & mobile connectivity perfom
so...you ownload the rom...from this link
https://www.dropbox.com/s/wof7dbw87cfven0
(if that doesn't work...try this link to a database for HTC DESIRE HD...you got all you need there
http://zantekk.de/~desire_hd/ )
you put the rom on your sd card, reboot on recovery, choose from the menu to install specific ZIP file... reboot
after that
download the radio, put it on the tools folder off your Android SDK directory, open a command prompt and flash it...you got a tutorial on develeopment section about that

Thanks everyone for the help!

[Q] problem with S-Off 2.2.1 PC49IMG.zip

Hi, I have a S-Off'd Wildfire (done with XTC-Clip) in version 2.2.1 and I asked a user from this forum how could I root. He answered me with this message:
Code:
hi poinu glad you managed S-off now you can put on any rom you want.
first you must get a custom recovery on your machine I use ClockworkMod 3.0.0.6
this should be fine to flash cyanogenmod7.
here is the file to it (http ://www . mediafire . com /?i09yp4r7odhlzws)
put this PC49IMG.zip on the root of your sd card. (not in a folder)
put the cyanogenmod update zip also on your sd card.
Reboot your phone into Hboot Mode by pressing Volume Down and Power.
It will now ask if you want to update the firmware select Volume Up for Yes.
wenn its done remove thePC49IMG.zip from your sd card.
Reboot your phone into Hboot Mode again.
it will look for the PC49IMG.zip again let that finish and ignore.
Then go with volume down to recovery and push power button, clockwordmod will start.
Do a wipe cache partition, wipe data/factory reset and under advanced wipe Dalvik cache.
go to install zip from sdcard / choose zip from sd card and choose your cyanogen mod update zip and install.
reboot wen finished don't worry if it takes some time first reboot always is slower.
hope i helped you enjoy your mod.
kind regards ab65
I've downloaded the PC49IMG.zip file and copied at the root next to the cm7.zip file (picture: http : //i55 . tinypic . com/ egai5s. png) but when I enter the HBOOT and looks for the PC49IMG.zip file, it finds nothing (and yes, the file is PC49IMG.zip not PC49IMG.zip.zip, I've already checked this )
I don`t know what I have done wrong (I have done nearly anything!) any ideas?
Thank you very much for having a look on the threat
here is what i suggest simply,
***** Ur memory card must be formatted with fat32 partition before doing this.......
go to this link and download the attached file at the bottom PC49IMG.ZIP
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12188132&postcount=15
Since security flag is turned of (by xtc clip) , the recovery partition is no longer protected. U can install custom recovery without any exploits. That downloaded PC49IMG.ZIP file is nothing but "ClockworkMod Custom Recovery". Put it in the root of the memory card (fat32). Then go to hboot menu. It definately finds the file and prompts u to install. Go with it. At the end u will have custom recovery.
then u can install custom roms. Custom roms will be packed in zip files and can be installed from recovery menu. Its not needed to put the custom rom zip file only in the root of memory card. And the most important thing is, remember to clear data/factory reset and clear cache (both done frm recovery menu) before installing a custom rom. Thats all
Oh god, i didn`t know that.... succesfully done
but now... there's another problem, I installed the CyanogenMod7 and there are some things that I pretty dislike and I would like to install another ROM I have (it's a 2.2.1 rooted ROM) and I tried to do what I did to install the CM7 but when I installed it from the recovery this error message appeared:
"Installing update...
Amend scripting (update-script) is no longer supported.
Amend scripting was deprecated by Google in Android 1.5. It was necessary to remove it when upgrading to the ClockworkMod 3.0 Gingerbread based recovery.
Please switch to Edify scripting (updater-script and update-binary) to create working update zip packages.
Installation aborted."
Is it really possible to root this ROM or do I have to stay in the CM7? :S
Any suggestion? Thank you very much for the support

CLockworkmod 3 is a must for the gingerbread CM7 roms.
And clockworkmod3 recovery will not support "amend - scripting"
What u need to do is, to install the CM7 custom rom. Then install "Rom Manager" from market. Then use a different version of clockworkmod (downgrade to 2.5 version or try different versions). Then reboot to recovery from Rom manager itself. Then try to install the 2.2.1 rooted rom. It should work. If u have any issues with installing custom roms, then try different version of clockworkmod recovery (from Rom Manager). That's all.

it surely worked, thank you very much

[Q] Failed installing a new rom

Hi,
There are a lot of similar problems on this forum, but after trying a lot i still can't get my DHD fixed... I feel stupid atm..
It happened when trying to install the Sensation v2.1 rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131063)
I followed the guide from this page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=964996
I started with making the phone Radio S-OFF and ENG S-OFF. This was succesfull.
BELOW are the steps from the flashing guide, the BOLD marked part shows the part it went wrong..
- Tell any people that might call you during the next 10-15 minutes to not worry
- Connect your phone using "Disk drive" to the computer.
- Copy both your full-wipe-1-3.zip and your rom zip file to your SD Card
- Make sure you copied them correctly
- Check again because once you full wipe, you won't have a rom.
- Disconnect your phone from your computer
- Install and open Rom Manager from the market
- Tap on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery
- Wait for it to download (yes, you need a wi-fi or data connection)
- After it is done press "Reboot into recovery"
- If you get an icon with a phone and an exclamation mark in a triangle, remove the battery from your phone, reboot and then flash the clockworkmod recovery again
- Once you are in the clockwork mod recovery, you may use the volume keys as directional keys (up and down) and the power button may be used as Enter.
- I recommend you do a nandroid back-up. You must have at least 1 gb of free space.
- Select "Install Zip from sdcard"
- Select "Choose zip from sdcard"
- Select full-wipe-1-3.zip (It's right under those folders)
- Confirm by selecting the Yes option in between those "NO"s
- Wait for it to finish
- DO NOT REBOOT!!! In case you were not aware, you now have no rom installed
- Once again select "Install Zip from sdcard"
- Select "Choose zip from sdcard"
- Select your rom zip file
- Confirm your selection (just like with the wipe)
- Wait for it to finish
- Please reboot from the recovery menu and flash nothing else before you have rebooted
- Pop a champagne bottle, because it's done.
I was not able to select a file from the SDcard.. It kept saying "SDCARD NOT MOUNTED"
After that ive done some more:
- Format the card with SDFormatter and i've also tried in Clockworkmod itself but also there it said the SDcard wasn't mounted..
I've also read about a USB brick or something.. But to fix the usb brick u needed to put a file, update.zip, on your SDcard... which i couldnt load ofcourse.
At the moment i'm really frustrated because my DHD just wont start!!
It has no ROM.. At the moment it also stopped starting the Clockworkmod.. It shows a phone with a red exclamation mark when i press RECOVERY from Bootloader screen...
I hope someone can help me fix this DHD..!
Regards, Thijs
Actually, at the moment i dont care if the ROM i mentioned gets installed.
I'd be SO HAPPY to have the stock Android 2.3.3 with Sense 2.x back!!!!!
Oke it now for some reason found the SDcard and i succesfully wiped the device again with Full wipe 1.5 EXT4 and succesfully installed the Sensation rom.
At this moment the systems just won't boot.
It freezes at the first screen u see when you boot the DHD..
Anyone knows what this could mean??
I'm sure you have done this but I'm going to ask anyway.
Do you have a nandroid backup somewhere in your computer? If you do try mounting the SDcard with a cardreader...some laptops have a built reader. copy the nandroid folder to where clockwork backs everything up and try restoring from phone recovery.
Since you are hung on boot...see if you can do a factory reset and data wipe...a wipe sometimes clears a rom not booting. then again...I'm speaking with experience from other phones not the Desire HD or any HTC for that matter.

[Q] Stuck at one step after rooting

I rooted my wildfire HBoots 1.01.0001 using AlpharevX from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1029318. After that to install a custom rom, i followed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824396 Pt 3- flashin your first rom..but couldnt go beyond the first step because after clicking on the problem button there was no option to download busybox.
Also, after starting the titanium backup, it showed that root access has failed. what am i supposed to do now? please help..
You have to flash Superuser. Sorry, I missed listing it in my tutorial thread.
- Download this file and place on your SD Card: http://bit.ly/su2361ef
- Then, reboot into Clockworkmod Recovery (Point 2 in the "Flashing your first ROM Post")
- Flash the file you just placed on your SD Card from within Clockworkmod Recovery (Point 5 in the "Flashing your first ROM post")
Then, reboot your system, check whether your app drawer has a "Superuser" Icon in it or not. If it does, the root process is complete, and you can now use Titanium backup without problems, and start following the ROM flashing process again.
