[Q] A fully n00b question on rooting (unrEVOked 3.32) - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
technically, this is a question concerning unrEVOked version to use. In Turkeys' ULTIMATE Guide to Rooting v42.1.1 everything is nicely described. However;
My concern is, there, entire procedure is described with unrEVOked 3.21 (provided in links inside post). Can I use unrEVOked 3.32 from HERE? Or should I use explicitly 3.21 version?
Thanks in advance,
jukyO

Depends on your phone. For some people 3.21 does the job, and have issues with the latest one. If you have PVT4, then you should go with the latest, if 1/3 Then go with 3.21.
Also if you have PVT4, then AmonRA is recommended over CWM.

Thanks for answering quickly.
My phone is PVT4 with erasesize 20000.
If I understood correctly, unrEVOked comes with CWM recovery built-in, or? How to "load" AmonRa, if CWM is inside unrEVOked?

Download this:
http://files.androidspin.com/downloads.php?dir=amon_ra/RECOVERY/&file=recovery-RA-desire-v2.0.0.img
Start unrEVOked but before connecting your phone go to File and choose 'Custom Recovery' and select the file you just downloaded. Then continue as normal and it'll use AmonRA instead of CWM (which yes, comes with unrEVOked)

If I understood correctly:
0. put "recovery-RA-desire-v2.0.0.img" to root of SD card
1. reflash and root with unrEVOked
2. boot the phone with vol - --> Choose "Custom Recovery"-->select "recovery-RA-desire-v2.0.0.img"
3. after step 2., it is possible to backup and restore with AmonRa, correct?
Is it OK like that or did I missed some step(s)?
Thanks for helping,
-jukyO

No...
1. Start unrEVOked
2. Choose custom Recovery and select the AmonRA file
3. Connect phone and let it run
That's it. Nothing on the SD card

Great! So this one covers my question. Thanks everyone for helping out!

However, one more thing to clarify concerning this image:
in Root Guide - Pt. 3 - Flashing Your First ROM it says:
3) Use the TRACKBALL to scroll down to where it says Backup or Nandroid or Backup / Restore. Then select Backup and wait for it to finish.
Now we need to wipe your phone. Whenever you flash a different ROM you should Always do this, when you are updating the ROM you should check on the release thread for information.
4) If you are not on the Main Menu in recovery, hit back a couple of times to get there. Then, use the TRACKBALL to navigate down to 'Wipe Data / Factory Reset' and accept the scary warning to wipe your phone.
Now we can flash the ROM! Ensure you have downloaded a ROM and it is on the root (Not in any folders) of your SD card. The flashing process may take a few minutes.
5) From the Main Menu, scroll down to and select Install zip from SD Card and then select Choose zip from SD Card then select where you put your ROM and wait for it to complete. Then, select Reboot System Now to reboot into your shiny new ROM!

Since this is written for original unrEVOked with CWM inside, is the procedure same (or similar) for phones having AmonRa recovery instead CWM? Any instructions available?
EDIT: got it. Its pretty plain simple from AmonRa Recovery.
Thanks,

[Q] Please Help cant find reliable tutorial to installing cyanogenmod 6 on htc evo!

Hey guys, well IM afraid to say this but... I am noob to smartphone hacking and installing roms. I finally rooted my htc evo with the help of DjR3Z from the droid demos website and successfully installed Amon Ra recovery on it. Now Im ready for installing cyanogenmod 6. Heres the problem.. I have no idea what Im doing. I did go to cyanogen's website but his tutorial is very vague. Plus he does not give you actual links and steps on what zips or files to download. IM basically asking for a dummies guide to installing cyanogen. Kinda like the recent tutorial to root the htc evo when it got updated to stock android 2.2. IF Anyone can take the time and help me out I would really appreciate it.
dont you just download the rom zip and flash it?
Go into the evo development section and look for the cyanogen mod thread. On the first page there will be a link to the cm6 Rom and a link for Google apps. Download them both. When finished transfer both zips to your SD card. After your done with that boot into recovery and choose flash zip from SD.....(I'm not sure of the exact wording on amon ra bc I've always used clockwork.) Than choose the cm6 zip that you had transferred to your card. After that is done flashing do the same thing with the Google apps zip you had transferred to your card. When that's done flashing reboot and voila u will have cm6.

thanks alot man i just have a few quick questions the two zips i transfer to my sd card when i plug my phone into my pc do i mount it on as a disk and have usb debugging on? This most likely is obvious but i am really new rooting phones. ALso before i do anything on my phone should i do a format clean on my sdcard or leave as is? thx
Guide:
1. Plug phone into PC.
2. Select Mount as Disk Drive.
3. Download CM6 stable release.
4. Download Google Apps.
5. Drag and drop the .zip files to your SDcard (leave the files in .zip format as they are signed especially for flashing).
6. Power off phone.
7. Reboot phone holding Volume Down + Power button at the same time.
8. Select recovery.
9. In recovery, select "Backup/restore."
10. Select backup.
11. Confirm when prompted.
12. Back in recovery, select Wipe.
13. Select "Wipe data/factory reset"
14. Confirm choice when prompted.
15. When finished, select "Wipe Cache"
16. Confirm choice when prompted.
17. Select "Wipe Dalvik-cache"
18. Confirm choice when prompted.
19. Select "Return" (if using Amon Ra 1.8.0): if not on 1.8.0 press both volume
buttons at the same time to return the the previous menu.
20. Select "Flash zip from sdcard."
21. Choose CM6.
22. Confirm response when prompted.
23. When finished, select "Flash zip from sdcard."
24. Choose Google Apps.
25. Confirm response when prompted.
26. When finished select reboot.
27. ENJOY!
Thanks for that step by step guide.
I will assume these are the same steps needed for flashing a new kernel, radio, etc?
For new kernel and radios, just do steps 1-8, (for kernels do 12-15), then 16-24.
One thing you might want to do (and isn't mentioned) is perform a Nandroid backup of your phone (performed between steps 8 and 9) before flashing anything.
Thanks! That's exactly the type of info I was looking for!
thanks so much i really appreciate just a quick quesion those wo zips do i extract them and then put on the sdcard or just copy send to desktop and then transfer to sdcard? also when moutned as disk drive do i have usb debugging on? Thx!

I had a non-rooted 2.2. device and used DJREZ (?) youtube method to rollback to 2.1. Unrevoked 3 was used if I recall correctly.
So apparently one of my options in the HBOOT screen will be a NAND backup?
EDIT: This is what I went by: LINK
And thank you so much for helping us out in here. It's very much appreciated.

No problem.
One of your options in the recovery screen will be to backup.
I don't think unrevoked3 unlocks NAND...
Try following Toasts method and go from there.

im really not sure how do i find out if im nand-unlocked do i have to nand-locked because in amon ra recovery screen it allows me to do a nandroid backup. I also went by djr3z's youtube video of downgrading to android 2.1 stock, rooting 2.1, then finally rooting 2.2 with Amon Ra recovery. I think the problem when I power down and go to the skateboard android screen it asks me to update should i do that and say no to rebbot or say no to both updating and rebooting the device? thx!
It let's you do a Nandroid backup, but if it won't let you boot CM6 then that's a pretty good indicator that you probably don't aren't NAND unlocked.
Try loading up the Toast Part 2 link and seeing how it goes. If it complete's correctly then you definitely without a doubt have NAND unlocked.

[Q] lost root after last update

If you have Unrevoked 3 installed:
1. Download stock Evo Recovery image (Can't find it anywhere... EVO Stock Recovery? - xda-developers)
2. Place the file in root of SD card and reboot into HBOOT (volume down/power button)
3. Do the update that HBOOT asks (vol. up for YES)
4. Reboot
5. Once rebooted, download OTA and install (should work now)
6. Once install finishes successfully you can reinstall a custom recovery using the same method (a list of them are here: public:forever [RootWiki])
7. Once you have a custom recovery back, you will need to reinstall Superuser as an update.zip through recovery ([APP] Superuser 2.3.6.1 - Now on the Market [2010-09-05] - xda-developers)
8. Reboot and enjoy!
Well I followed the instructions and the update went through... HOWEVER I have now lost root.... Help please.
EDIT: S-OFF does appear when I boot into the bootloader...
If you have S-Off, than you have not lost root.
YOu probably just lost your recovery, and you need to reflash it.
This tutorial from tws101 worked for me (I can't post a link as a new user):
"This guide will allow you to install the new OTA 3.29.651.5 when you have clockwork installed and will guide you into re-rooting the phone afterwards. (This does NOT wipe your data)
I am sorry if someone already posted this.
Requirements
1. Froyo 2.2 version 3.26.651.6 (Stock)
2. Clockwork
3. S-OFF
Files to Download (If you have a file manager on your phone you can just direct download them with the EVOs browser)
1. OTA_Supersonic_3.29.651.5 This is the new OTA update
2. ClockworkMod recovery for EVO 4G Clockwork (I know you already have it. This is to reinstall it)
3. su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip Superuser (This is also to reinstall)
Step one
Place OTA_Supersonic_3.29.651.5 on your SD cards root folder. Power off and reboot holding Volume down. Once the bootloader is up goto recovery so clockwork loads up. Choose apply zip from sd card. Choose select zip on sd card. You will see the OTA file on the list flash it. Just wait for it to install it will reboot the phone show a progress bar reboot again they show a percentage etc it takes a few minutes.
Now you have the update installed, but the update removed clockwork and root.
Step two
Place ClockworkMod recovery for EVO 4G on your sd card root folder. Power off and reboot holding Volume down. The bootloader will scan the new will and ask you to press Volume up to install. Install it.
Now you have clockwork installed again. Please remove the clockwork file from the root of your SD card before going to step 3.
Step Three
Place su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip on the SD cards root folder. Power off and reboot holding Volume down. Once the bootloader is up goto recovery so clockwork loads up. Choose apply zip from sd card. Choose select zip on sd card. You will see the SU file on the list flash it.
Now you are updated and rerooted. (I have been told it is possible to just rerun unrevoked instead of doing step 2 and 3. I did not test that method. I am simply showing a different method.)
Update
I am now getting 53 FPS with FPS 2D"
Thanks tws101

You dont take updates once you are rooted, just flash a rooted ROM
First of all - Once you have rooted your phone - NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER do an OTA update from sprint............
Not sure what your software version is or your hBoot, but if you have 2.02 hboot and 3.30 software, then you can do it the way I did...
having said that - You have not lost root, S-Off = Root, you just lost your recovery... all you need to do is flash a new custom recovery. I use Amon_Ra, but clockwork will work as well... what ever your preferance is...
I cant find the amon_ra that I used, so here is the new CW (attachment 1) - download it - rename it to just (all CAPS except extention!!) "PC36IMG.zip" - Then save it to the root of your SD card. Also save attachment 2 to the root of your SD card.
Boot into hBoot, it will scan the SD card for the PC36IMG.zip - when it asks to do update - click yes... After update completes it will ask to reboot - click NO, then scroll down to flash the superuser app (2nd attachment), I forget what exactly it says but its some thing like "flash from SDcard" or some thing like that...
after you flash the SU.apk, then reboot and if all is good - download ROM manger and flash the Amon_Ra recovery (3rd attachment) and make a NAND backup with Amon_Ra first - cause I'll be honest - I used the CWmod first and I had a bunch of Force Close issues after I did a NAND backup with CW...
Good luck!

There was someone else reporting a similar issue. He finally managed to solve it by flashing stock RUU and then going through the whole rooting, s-off-ing and flashing ROM procedure.
I had the same problem.. I used a virtual machine instead of burning a CD!!
Easiest way to do it. Flash stock rooted froyo Rom with no a2sd and s-off.
Had same problem on some other Rom. Used usb, after flashing froyo everything went smooth.

I think we are talking about S-OFF with Alpharev?!
Read in a serious german forum this problem could be caused by gingerbread. It is recommended to install a FROYO-Rom for S-OFF with Alpharev.
Detailled instruction:
1.) COMPLETE NANDROID- backup
2.) Download a FROYO- ROM (i used DeFroST)
3.) Copy it on your sd-card
4.) Start your phone in Recovery
5.) Do a FULL Wipe
6.) Flash FROYO- ROM
7.) Reboot your phone completely (to the homescreen of the new ROM)
8.) Download the iso from Alpharev-Homepage, check MD5 if file is complete and burn the ISO on CD
9.) Start your PC with the created disk [eventually u have to change your boot order (disk-drive on first position)]
10.) Follow the instructions on the screen (i only had to connect my Desire with PC in USB-Debug-Mode. Then I waited til i got the message that S-OFF is complete)
11.) After S-OFF is complete, boot your phone into recovery
12.) Restore the constructed backup
13.) Have fun with your previously ROM and S-OFF
Followed these steps tomorrow and it worked properly without any problems.
With this TuT, it´s worked for me...
I was trying about 5 hours to S-Off it... Hours of read threads, google und the questions was here...
Thank you very much

Interesting. I had problems (device not recognised / supported at this time) trying s-off with rooted stock froyo sense, after making a goldcard.
Never got to the bottom of it but as soon as I flashed oxygen (gingerbread) it worked fine!

3) After installing the htc driver, run the revolutionary.exe
4) code is displayed on the screen. Put that code in http://revolutionary.io/ and it will give you the code for the revolutionary.exe.
Let it do it's thing... a few minutes.
If this part fails - try again. It worked the 2nd time I ran it.
5) when it's done it will ask you to you want to install clockwork recovery. From other post, don't. We will Install the AMON RA. When you're in hboot it will ask you if you want to update, YES. So it installs AMON RA.
6) if you goto recovery this is the AMON RA. Make a nandroid backup so you can recover any changes made after this point.
7) Install superuser by flashing the zip.
http://goo-inside.me/superuser/su-2....fgh-signed.zip
Also install busybox from marketplace - must launch it then install it again.
8) Then find a nice rom. Put the downloaded roms in the sd card and install from the Recovery. You should NANDRIOD backup then WIPE everything (before installing new rom).
My instructions maybe slightly off... i'm running it back through my head to remember!

[q]Stock rom

Can some one suggest me where download and how installa the stock rom for wildfire.
Now I use a cynogen 7 and i want go back to original froyo + sense
There are 3 primary ways to do that:
1) If you had taken a Nandroid Backup before installing CM7, Just restore that. (But I am assuming you didn't, hence you are asking this)
2) If you want to retain root and Clockworkmod Recovery, just flash this ROM. Its Stock Froyo + Sense:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877977
The process to install that is as follows:
- Download this attachment and place on your SDCard:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=662193&d=1311319218
- Flash in Clockworkmod 3.x or higher. This will give you temporary Clockworkmod 2.5 (Green Text)
- Then, perform a Data Wipe, and install the ROM Zip file as normal.
3) If you dont want to retain root and Clockworkmod
- Download the Froyo RUU from Shipped ROMs (Froyo WWE 2.22.405.1 EXE) from Shipped ROMs:
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Buzz
- Connect Wildfire to the PC, and simply run it.
Hi, I'm back
Just 2 questions
I downloaded both files
i copied both files on sd then i started rom manager and tapped on first field to
Flask clockwork mod recovery
Then? what i have to do to revert to Clockworkmod 2.5?

I can't understand what you mean by your first question at all. Clockworkmod Recovery flashed via ROM Manager is temporary. Your original Clockworkmod will remain untouched. So if you are using the option called Flash Clockworkmod Recovery in ROM Manager, then the next step is to select Reboot into Recovery from the ROM Manager App again, then flash the ROM File. In this case, you can discard the update1.zip file, as it has no significance.
As for your second question, mirrors of the EXE RUU can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1275680
My first question is simple
on my phone i have rom manager and there is a row named "Flask clockwork mod recovery"
but
i don't know how go back from cynogen to stock rom using clockwork mod recovery
can you help me step by step?
and the stock [with no root] rom for wildfire with froyo is this one?
RUU_Buzz_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.22.405.1_Radio_13.55.55.2 4H_3.35.20.10_release_160191_signed.exe (This RUU contains HBoot 1.01.0001)
i need only to connect the phone to pc and run the exe?
First, decide what you want to do - Flash the EXE RUU, or Flash the Safe Flash ZIP File. If you decide to flash the Safe ZIP file, you will keep Clockworkmod Recovery, which will allow you to flash stuff later. If you select the EXE RUU, Clockworkmod Recovery will be removed, so you will NOT be able to flash anything, like ROMs, Kernels etc.
Once you have decided, here are the steps:
1) If you decide to install the Safe Flash ZIP File
- Download the Safe Flash ZIP from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877977
Rooted / Unrooted, Its upto you which version you want. Rooted version has Superuser, so you can run apps like Titanium Backup etc. Unrooted doesnt have Superuser, so you cant run root apps.
- Place this file on your SDCard
- Now, open ROM Manager
- Select Flash Clockworkmod Recovery. Then make sure you select 2.5.0.7. NOT a version beginning with 3.x, 4.x or 5.x
- Once it is installed, in ROM Manager, the next option will be 'reboot into recovery'. Select that
- Once you select that, then you will be taken to Clockworkmod 2.5.0.7 (Which has all its options in Green coloured Text). Here, select "Wipe Data / Factory Reset". This step will erase all data on your phone (Not on your SDcard, Just your phone data. This step is essential when changing ROMs)
- Lastly, select "Install Zip from SDCard", and then, select the ZIP file you placed on your card at the beginning of this step. Let it install. Once installed, Select "Reboot System Now", and let the phone reboot. Done
2) If you decide to run the EXE RUU
- Its pretty much 1 step. Connect the phone to your PC and run the EXE File. It will automatically perform the install. If you get an Error 131 - Customer ID Error, you will need to create a Goldcard. There's a guide for that here:
http://theunlockr.com/2010/03/10/how-to-create-a-goldcard/

Flash this zip file in CWM3: (Install Zip from SDCard > Choose Zip from SDCard. (Don't select the "Apply update.zip option)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=662193&d=1311319218
It will give you temporary 2.5.0.7, then you can flash the ROM. (It is temporary, so, everytime you want CWM 2.5.0.7, you will have to flash this Zip file)
