Nandroid Backup Location

I'm looking to delete some of my old nandroid backups that I won't use, however I can't seem to locate them on my SD card, anyone know where I can find these backups at for purging? Thanks!
Edit: clockwork puts backups in /sdcard/clockwork/backup/<date> other recovery imgs put it in the nandroid folder on sdcard root.
Should have searched first. However I do have a follow up question,
what does the last set of numbers after the date mean,
2010-08-05.01.42.54
01.42.54? I'm not following the reasoning, thanks!

Yup. Here's my question. How do you APPLY one of your nand backups, since it's not a zip file that recovery will find. Thanks in advance.

Instead of installing from zip card, go into nandroid>restore and that should give you the choce of backups to restore to.

Eeeeek, those numbers represent the time that you made the backup.
Scott, in Rom Manager you can choose restore and find the folder you want to revert to

Rename?
If the backup files are renamed can this cause any problems with the restore process?
I use AmonRA Recovery

If you rename them don't add spaces: so mikg-311-03-29-12 is OK but mik g 3.11 03-29-12 will result in md5 sum mismatch

Rename Nandroid Backup File

Can i rename a nandroid backup file and then restore from? I know it names it with the date and time but i would like to name it something else.

If you have clockwork, you can easily re-name them in rom mananger, just click manage backups, pick the selected, then rename.

I'm using Amon RA 2.2.1. I think i can do it using Root Explorer.

Every time I've tried CM it says md5 sum error. Tried to rename from astro, and computer everything does md sum error

no spaces! stay away from special characters too. 2-3-12 is fine though.
Don't rename tho folder that they are in though.

[Q] renaming nandroid backups

I have read around on the forums. I use Amon-ra and would like to rename some of my nand backups. I think the general advice is it will be fine as long as there is not any spaces in the name. If there is anything im missing before I do this.

As far as I know, spaces get converted to _ , so you should be fine either way.

your all set, here is what i name all my NAND's and everyone has showed up in Amon's
YYYY.MM.DD.ROMNAME.VERSION.THEME(if installed).Version(if different versions of themes/captured)
2011.02.14.WARM.RLS5.MB
today's date Warm RLS5 with matte blues theme

Not sure about amon, but i have clockwork, and I renamed my backups with the rom name after the date/time. When I went to restore them, I got a md5 mismatch error. I had to rename them back to what clockwork created to restore the backup. So just make sure you keep the date/time so if you need to, you can revert back to that.

Did you use an incorrect character, because I completely change mine, and no errors. A typical backup name for me might look like: CM7 build# xFeb

Only rename the folder, don't rename the files inside the folder.

Dude, just add a couple letters after the file. For example: if its a Fresh Rom you can just add xxxxxxFR at the end.

The last time I renamed my backups using Amon-ra, I was unable to restore in recovery. So, I just use a note app(ColorNote) to label my backups using the last 4 digits from the backup number. That way I know I won't have any issues.

I rename mine to what ever the date is and the ROM. Thats it. I use the dash symbol instead of the underscore cause for some reason it wouldnt recognize the underscores when I tried to restore. I also tried using dots instead of underscores and they wouldnt work for me either. I have found the only one that would work for me was the dash and Im on Amon Ra...

I rename my nands they look like this--> cm6wimaxalpha3 <-- or like -->cm7wimaxstockkernel <--
Without the arrows or dashes.

[Q] CWM Backup/Restore Question

Is there a safe way to rename the backups we make in CWM ? It currently labels them as "2011-05-22.17.55.36" depending on date/time .... I wanna be able to rename it so I know what is actually on that particular backup ; such as "SRF-1.1.1" "UrbanFury" , etc. When I renamed them before and then tried to restore , it wouldn't work. Anyone find a solution to this ?

use rom manager to rename, or just rename the directory in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/

That's what I have already done in the past , and when I tried to restore my back-up it wouldn't work ...was wondering if anyone else had actually renamed their backups and then successfully restored them. Maybe the way I was renaming them was wrong ? I need to leave spaces between words ? I need to include date/time format ?

I haven't done it before... but try changing to the 2 in 2011 to a letter. Sfr = s urban fury = u... see if it works.

Sounds Good = I hadn't tried that option yet.....now I gotta make another backup before I try renaming my last backup....LOL

the directory name doesnt matter at all... just dont leave any space, you may need to regenerate nandroid.md5 i dont know.. but if so its easy enough
in a shell goto your new backup directory

BTW i have a script to make and restore nandroid backups.. not using the builtin cwm functions, useful for installs and i guess maybe your situation of naming it whatever you want..

If you back it up in CWM and then boot up and open Rom Manager you can click manage, hold down the backup you want to edit and choose rename. It works just fine, this is how I keep track of my backups.

So - is it OK to just rename as "SRF " "UrbanFury" "Frankenstein" "SuperNova" etc ? Do I need to have date/time in there or anything else ?

Ok I'm currently made a nandroid backup with cwn 3.0.0.6 and I'm trying to edit the name of my nandroid backup...in Rom manager, it wants me to flash clockwork recovery again...should I flash it or is that an error...I'm on srf 1.1.1 rite now

It won't actually flash it, choose flash and epic, and choose 3.x

Yea, its meant to be run from recovery in install scripts, but could be run from a shell... it has to be in recovery to do the system partition.. suppose the backup can be run from a shell regardless though...

I don't believe there should be any spaces. Try underscores: __ .

can I rename like you are suggesting (Bonsai411.6.1.2011) by connecting to my PC or will this only work via ROM Manager ?

I use es file explore and I just rename it to what ever the rom name is. For example I backup bonsai 4.1.1 and I named it bonsai. I was able to restore it with no problem. I also backed up marcusant rom and just renamed it gingerbread and I was able to restore with no issues. Hope this helps

OK - I tried your suggestion to rename but I did it on the computer ( don't have much experience with ROM Manager since I've always been told it don't really work on our Epic phone ) .... IT WORKED !!! I just changed the 2011 to UrbanFury and SRF and did restore with No Problemas ( I musta left spaces the first times I tried renaming ) ... so the moral of the lesson is - NO SPACES

I have an additional CWM backup/restore question. Does this back up apps installed on the SD card too, as well as their data? I don't don't know whether or not it matters, but I have CWM 3.0.2.5 and the Swiss Cheese ROM.

No your SD card is seperate storage and can be backed up on a computer.

It doesn't back up the actuall apps, you would need another app for that
like File expert or titanium back up or any other of the multitude of apps out there that do that

Changing your nandroid backup name

I was wondering if you can change your nandriod back up name "IE" in es file explorer. my current back up file name is 1970-01-03.01.51.11, es file lets you change the file name, will that effect the nandroid in any way. it would be easyer to remember, stock, cm9, cm10, blue,ect.

I've had md5 issues changing babes. Use Rom manager to create your backup and it lets you name it. Or if your using twrp, twrp gives a rename function

Thanks, i wasnt to sure, this is my stock rom and dont want to loose it. i have erased them in the past because i read the numbers wrong.

I've had those issues too. But Rom Manager? Ugh. Looks like dude using TWRP. Use the name backup option before you make your backup

There a free version of Rom manager... and I just switched to twrp myself so until I'm comfortable using it I can't suggest it to anyone but it does have an option to have the backups and even a rename option

thanks, I have always used rom manager to install roms and updates but never to back up, i usually just go into CW. ill try it. I recently had to use RM to flash CM 5.8.4.9. the CW that was installed in my root did not give the option to back up and restore????

I never change the backup name, too many md5 issues in the past. I just put backups in a named folder

I quit changing the backup names after multiple issues with md5. I just put then in a named folder.

im on the latest TWRP v2.3.3.0 .. im on a stock rooted phone and was just wondering how to do a nandroid, is that just doing a backup in TWRP? .. was just wondering because the back up was like 2gb .. thats pretty big for a nandroid .. when i was on the og evo nands were mbs only but then again that was on custom roms .. is the jb stock rom that big? . was just wondering before i start flashing roms .. :laugh:

Yeah, nandroids are huge on S3 don't matter what recovery you have. That if you use TouchWiz roms. AOSP roms are like Evo nands.

I always check the use compression setting in twrp. It has always worked for me and my first backup was about 1.2gb. I didn't have to many apps installed yet at that point though. I'm not sure how much space it actually saves but it should help.

I have an odd problem,
I create a nandroid backup of my S3 on touchwiz. I want to restore it to check my LTE speeds on it but for some reason I cant seem to get that done.
When I place it in the folder /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/touchwiz (called the folder of the backup touchwiz)
doesnt show up in restore.
I just create a new restore to try and find where it reads it from and cant seem to find those when I go searching on phone in USB mode.
What am I doing wrong here?

I use underscores as a substitute for spaces. Ex: "Nandroid_Backup"

Exactly, and never any md5 issues here.(found this out after failing miserably time and time again with spaces.)
