[Q] renaming nandroid backups - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have read around on the forums. I use Amon-ra and would like to rename some of my nand backups. I think the general advice is it will be fine as long as there is not any spaces in the name. If there is anything im missing before I do this.
Thanks.

go head sir!

As far as I know, spaces get converted to _ , so you should be fine either way.

your all set, here is what i name all my NAND's and everyone has showed up in Amon's
YYYY.MM.DD.ROMNAME.VERSION.THEME(if installed).Version(if different versions of themes/captured)
2011.02.14.WARM.RLS5.MB
today's date Warm RLS5 with matte blues theme

Not sure about amon, but i have clockwork, and I renamed my backups with the rom name after the date/time. When I went to restore them, I got a md5 mismatch error. I had to rename them back to what clockwork created to restore the backup. So just make sure you keep the date/time so if you need to, you can revert back to that.

Did you use an incorrect character, because I completely change mine, and no errors. A typical backup name for me might look like: CM7 build# xFeb

Only rename the folder, don't rename the files inside the folder.

Dude, just add a couple letters after the file. For example: if its a Fresh Rom you can just add xxxxxxFR at the end.

The last time I renamed my backups using Amon-ra, I was unable to restore in recovery. So, I just use a note app(ColorNote) to label my backups using the last 4 digits from the backup number. That way I know I won't have any issues.

I rename mine to what ever the date is and the ROM. Thats it. I use the dash symbol instead of the underscore cause for some reason it wouldnt recognize the underscores when I tried to restore. I also tried using dots instead of underscores and they wouldnt work for me either. I have found the only one that would work for me was the dash and Im on Amon Ra...

I rename my nands they look like this--> cm6wimaxalpha3 <-- or like -->cm7wimaxstockkernel <--
Without the arrows or dashes.

Nandroid Backup Location

I'm looking to delete some of my old nandroid backups that I won't use, however I can't seem to locate them on my SD card, anyone know where I can find these backups at for purging? Thanks!
Edit: clockwork puts backups in /sdcard/clockwork/backup/<date> other recovery imgs put it in the nandroid folder on sdcard root.
Should have searched first. However I do have a follow up question,
what does the last set of numbers after the date mean,
2010-08-05.01.42.54
01.42.54? I'm not following the reasoning, thanks!
Yup. Here's my question. How do you APPLY one of your nand backups, since it's not a zip file that recovery will find. Thanks in advance.

Instead of installing from zip card, go into nandroid>restore and that should give you the choce of backups to restore to.
Eeeeek, those numbers represent the time that you made the backup.
Scott, in Rom Manager you can choose restore and find the folder you want to revert to
Hairongreenfire, thanks. I'm guessing the same is possible thru amonRA recovery? (I trust that recovery more than clockwork)
Thanks.

Rename?
If the backup files are renamed can this cause any problems with the restore process?
I use AmonRA Recovery

If you rename them don't add spaces: so mikg-311-03-29-12 is OK but mik g 3.11 03-29-12 will result in md5 sum mismatch

Broken NAND backups

Does anyone know exactly what it is that breaks the backups. When I say "break" you try to restore and get the message to use ADB. I had backups that I know worked because I had used them, I flashed the beta of Warm 2.2 RLS 3, tried to restore and every single one was broken after that. Just trying to figure out what is causes this. Or I may be the only one, who knows.
I've had md5 mismatches which won't let me restore a nand backup. Don't know why.

Did you use rom manager to flash back clockwork at any point using amon ra?
i get errors when backing up and restoring when the battery or storage space on the sd card is low.
i've also seen nand restores fail when trying to restore using a different hboot than the one used to make the backup.
hope that helps.
Have you changed the filename? Also check storage space. I got an error only once and that was when I changed file names. I usually change the end of name to whichever rom it was but I accidentally put a space.

I had changed the file name, but I had used that backup many times before. Not really sure what the deal is.
Changing the file name most of the time hurts the nandroid backup because both folders together are in sync in the checksums. That's why it creates two folders. This is what I was told. That's why they are brokem

Changing hboot wont do anything.....well it well, but I went throught the same thing and I never changed hboot. If you tried to boot pc36.Img, then ya, it messed them up. But even changing the file names, messes the checksum up

What I meant was that if he made his backups, then changed his hboot for any reason (like to try cm), then he won't be able to restore those backups until he goes back to the hboot version he had when he made the backups.
Sent from my blah blah blah blah
Right right. These no doubt there that if he changes the version, it wont work. But if then, reverting back may not even solve it. But lets say he didn't downgrade or even upgrade hboot, then what's left?

You're right, but you and the other posters already seemed to be addressing the other options pretty well. Just wanted to throw it out there

I also had this issue where I was able to sucessfully backup and restore, however the restored rom was missing a lot of files and apps and didn't look right. I wasn't able to backup anything for quite a while, and then I updated the recovery image to the latest Amonra version. This seemed to correct it, as I just did a sucessful backup and restore. Hope it helps.

[Q] CWM Backup/Restore Question

Is there a safe way to rename the backups we make in CWM ? It currently labels them as "2011-05-22.17.55.36" depending on date/time .... I wanna be able to rename it so I know what is actually on that particular backup ; such as "SRF-1.1.1" "UrbanFury" , etc. When I renamed them before and then tried to restore , it wouldn't work. Anyone find a solution to this ?
use rom manager to rename, or just rename the directory in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/

That's what I have already done in the past , and when I tried to restore my back-up it wouldn't work ...was wondering if anyone else had actually renamed their backups and then successfully restored them. Maybe the way I was renaming them was wrong ? I need to leave spaces between words ? I need to include date/time format ?
I haven't done it before... but try changing to the 2 in 2011 to a letter. Sfr = s urban fury = u... see if it works.

Sounds Good = I hadn't tried that option yet.....now I gotta make another backup before I try renaming my last backup....LOL
the directory name doesnt matter at all... just dont leave any space, you may need to regenerate nandroid.md5 i dont know.. but if so its easy enough
in a shell goto your new backup directory
Code:
md5sum *img > nandroid.md5
BTW i have a script to make and restore nandroid backups.. not using the builtin cwm functions, useful for installs and i guess maybe your situation of naming it whatever you want..
If you back it up in CWM and then boot up and open Rom Manager you can click manage, hold down the backup you want to edit and choose rename. It works just fine, this is how I keep track of my backups.

So - is it OK to just rename as "SRF " "UrbanFury" "Frankenstein" "SuperNova" etc ? Do I need to have date/time in there or anything else ?

Yea, its meant to be run from recovery in install scripts, but could be run from a shell... it has to be in recovery to do the system partition.. suppose the backup can be run from a shell regardless though...

I use es file explore and I just rename it to what ever the rom name is. For example I backup bonsai 4.1.1 and I named it bonsai. I was able to restore it with no problem. I also backed up marcusant rom and just renamed it gingerbread and I was able to restore with no issues. Hope this helps

OK - I tried your suggestion to rename but I did it on the computer ( don't have much experience with ROM Manager since I've always been told it don't really work on our Epic phone ) .... IT WORKED !!! I just changed the 2011 to UrbanFury and SRF and did restore with No Problemas ( I musta left spaces the first times I tried renaming ) ... so the moral of the lesson is - NO SPACES
I have an additional CWM backup/restore question. Does this back up apps installed on the SD card too, as well as their data? I don't don't know whether or not it matters, but I have CWM 3.0.2.5 and the Swiss Cheese ROM.

like File expert or titanium back up or any other of the multitude of apps out there that do that

If you rename the folder, the md5's wont match, therefore it wont restore. I found this out the hard way before.
You can however just add text AFTER the folder name to indicate what rom backup it is. That way, when you want to restore it, just remove that text, leaving the original name. Just be sure the leave the original folder name intact.

well i found this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1131784 so i added -express to the end of the name and about to see if it tries to restore
I rename mine all the time and no issues. Just do not add spaces that seems to screw it up.
What I do evo I just change 20120204-2222 to a rom that i am running, like cm7 ill put CM720204-2222. Never had any issues.

you can rename it to "turdburgler" if you want
I leave the letters, they tell what's backed up, and replace the numbers with a description.
I rename them so I know which backup it is.And before I started using firerat and was partitioned I made sure I put Sdext at the end.

I leave the date portion so I know that it's the lastest backup I've done and just rename the number at the end for example nandroid backup BDESW-20120206-1274 I'll just rename it to let's say according to the Rom I'm using BDESW-20120206-MIUI

i didn't think that it would have any issues, since (at least with amon ra) the MD5 is inside the backup folder, with the *whatever*.img backup image

Nandroid Restore Question

First off, Sorry if this is in the wrong section, but i dont think that the Q&A section would be a better place to put this.
So i flashed a bunch of different roms and set them all up exactly the way i want them and did a nandroid backup. Then i went on to the sdcard and (stupid move, i know) changed the names of the folders from the default nandroid name to the name of the rom without backing up the file. Now when i try to do a restore, it says md5 mismatch. I went back into the sdcard to try and go throguh the nandroid md5 file to find what to change the name back to, but there is nothing there (Itried it with a restore that i did not change the name of so i would be able to match some numbers, but couldnt find any that matched) I know that the name is probably the date and time, but i cant remember the time that i did the restore.
Anyone know what to do (besides flash the rom again, restore all my apps, put widgets back into place, change settings, and etc, etc)????
I change the name of the file but I leave it in the same folder. Never had a problem with the md5 at restoring.

I had this issue too. The problem comes when you rename a file and include spaces in the name. Nandroid backups don't work if there are any spaces in the name, dashes or underscores only. The suggestion above should solve the issue but if you want to keep the labels so you know which backup is your juggernaut ROM and which backup is your darkside ROM, you can rename them, just no spaces and use dashes instead.
