My name is Andy. I have had the EVO for about a month, and think it is time to start messing around with it a little more, so being I have never done anything like this, I had a few questions so I fully understand whats going on so I can fix it if I mess something up haha....sorry if they are noob questions haha I'm just trying to learn...
Ok, so I have been doing much research on rooting and rom'ing my eVo. I already have it rooted, with unrevoked3. I read somewhere that unrevoked3 isn't a complete root...is this true? and if so how to I do a complete root so I can use the ROM that is mentioned below...?
Now the NooB question of "What ROM is best?"
***I know it is more a personal opinion, and what features you want bla bla, but what ROM has proven to work the best with the EVO (aka removing programs that aren't needed/battery life/speed/UI runs smooth and also looks good...ect.)?
I was looking on a post about the BakedSnack 1.7 ROM. Does anybody have any input on this ROM...Likes or Dislikes? I Like a lot of the things this ROM sais it has/does, so thats why im trying that one but am I getting the BETA 9.7? And does it have many bugs?
And, in this thread, it talks about all the different Kernals you can get. I was wondering, will the processor in the eVo support the 1.267GHz overclock?
Different opinion
Ok, once again, it is all personal preference, but i like Ava froyo v8. It is extremely fast, a day and a half of battery, and on the modified Rosie, app drawer is where the phone used to be. Once again, preference.
About unrevoked, 3.2.1 gives you full root but doesn't give you engineering boot. Anything earlier than 3.2.1 only gives you half root. You if you only have half root, use unrevoked forever or just use 3.2.1. Ask me if you have any more questions as i would be glad to help you.
Thanks for the input.
Couple things I noticed...
This ROM comes with 3 different types of keyboards, but how do you use them? I've checked them, but cant seem to figure out how to use them in a text or what not. Any help?
There is a box to check to change the notitification bar, but it doesn't seem to change anything around when I reboot. Also when I check or uncheck, it askes me if I would like to reboot and if I click yes, it doesn't actually do anything.
I have noticed that when I check the box that is to "Show compass in Maps", it wont stay selected....??
Any help would be awesome!!
Thanks
Hello..
I need to know. what is the best technology in accordance with best performance (no lags), best memory (RAM) free, best sd card access speed, from
App2SD+
Data2SD
Data2Ext version 1
Data2Ext version 2
Data2Ext version 3
Data2Ext version 4
?
At the moment I think it's A2SD+, but in a few time, when developers modify and make a better DATA2EXT, I think it will be the best of all.
I agree with Neo. Data2ext isnt finished yet... need some more work For now i use A2SD+.
Agreed. I still use A2SD+.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
what i'm experience using data2ext. first boot takes too long. all performance seems many lags. when i'm restoring all of my sms & contact from mybackup app, it's very very slow..and it eats much RAM, until it hangs..i think data2ext version 1-4 is not suitable to be installed on our device for the moment. using app2sd+, app cannot 100% moved to sd card. installing hundreds of app can make internal memory full..
Im using DATA2SD and no problem
I recomend u to not use that chinese craps like data2ext

I Think that was his Point, aimed at Dur09.....
Can anyone explain me differences between data2sd and data2ext? Both are symlinking whole /data partition to sd?
And could someone explain d2we?
I am also interested on the differences between data2ext, data2sd and data2we.
Noone knows?
i tried appsd+, data2w and data2ext...and i'm quietly sure that data2ext gets best performance scores between all, and it works great. i'm not a developer and honesly i don't understand technical details so much, i'm just a flasher but you can try data2ext.
by the way, i don't know how it was before
As far as I understand it, a2sd is Froyo's way of migrating apps to SD card, but then that feature is dependent on whether an app is coded to be movable. a2sd+ moves more apps to the SD card than a2sd, but still leaves plenty of "immovable" apps in the phone. Data2SD would be the one that moves just about everything to the SD card's EXT partition, while the rest of the data would be put in the FAT32 partition.
Hey, im sorry if I used the wrong term (hack) but I am not knowledgable in this field. I was wondering though what benefits there are to using "custom roms" (I think thats right).
The main complaint with my Desire is the extreme lack of internal memory and slow software updates from telus (froyo and honeycomb for example in case I used the wrong term again). If either of these issues could be fixed from hacking my Desire (primarily the memory one) I would more then likely go through with it. (I have 15 mb of free memory and its a Huge annoyance)
You see, I hacked my psp back in the day because I could play games for free , get cutom themes and all that cool stuff. I was wondering what special things you can do with a "custom OS".
Im sorry if I said anything wrong, blatantly obvious or if this topic has been made before. I just want my phone to be all it can be, thanks a million and all the best.
i do have desire too, have rooted recently , have tried, various roms , like , leedroid, starburst, coolz etc, now using gingervillian ,
i felt like you before but rooting will give you choice of OS to install and you dont have to wait OTA update to use gingerbread or latest OS.
if you need more space then starburst might be your choice.
I never regret rooting my phone, it is awesome! Really do recommend it!
Of course
It's better,faster,smoother,more space for apps
Yes, you should've.
Take a look on Leedroid ROM, its fairly easy to start with. Ofcourse you need to Root your phone first. (lots of guides on forum just search)

Yeah, you can "fix" your main complaints rooting your phone and installing a Custom ROM. The lack of internal memory can be fixed using App2SD+ or a clean AOSP ROM (like Oxygen, my current ROM) and a custom HBOOT partition (giving less space to the /system partition and a lot more space to /data). Of course, in this case you lost HTC Sense, but if you really like Sense just search for App2SD+. And Custom ROMs are updated a lot more than oficial, you can already have Gingerbread on your Desire and even Honeycomb (early and broke port, but it's getting better).
And a rooted phone is way more fun IMHO. You can use some great apps that will never work without root (like Titanium Backup, Root Explorer, ROM Manager, ShootMe, SetCPU etc) and you can do almost anything to the system. It's great.

There isn't a single Desire running an official version of Honeycomb so you're not missing out there. 2.2 is out on Telus now so really don't know what you're on about!!
Anyway, yes a custom ROM is good but it's not the be all and end all. I've got over my ROM-flashing days and now only change when something is worth switching for. Otherwise I use my own ROM. That way I can add/remove what I want and not what someone else thinks I should be using
Read up a lot, ask questions (if you can't find answers) and don't let others dictate what you do. Root it because YOU want to, not because everyone says to
I unrooted my Desire recently, i realised that i dont need root anymore.
Froyo A2SD is good enough for me and i prefer Sense. Currently im waiting for the GingerSense update that ships in June. The leaked Saga ROM looks very promising - it even has a build in notification power widget.
You could use a GoldCard do debrand if you dont want to wait for Telus to push OTA updates.
The simple answer, in my humble opinion, is root your phone! I agree with the comment before mine and you should only mod your phone if your want to and are happy to tinker with it. Like the old days playing with PSP's and the like all mods carry risks of bricking but most answers I needed were in this forum somewhere. I have never regretted rooted my Desire and have helped several friends do theirs. Along the way I've tried different roms and made a few mistakes but I now enjoy my phone more than when I first got it. For rooting I would recommend searching out unRevoked it's one click rooting is brilliant although make sure you have the right adb drivers for your computer before starting! I first started with LeeDroid as the Apps to SD Card is already implemented for you so very little fiddling to do, you will need to be able to partition your SD card to use this function tho but you sound like you have some base knowledge so that shouldn't be too tricky. I'm now using GingerVillain 1.6 and love it, its quick smooth and meets all MY needs it might not be the one for you tho. Biggest tip? Read research and ask before starting anything there's normally someone out there that has done or about to do whatever you're thinking of so find out first before pressing enter and swearing for several hours!
I think i've posted this in the right section, but if not, my apologies in advance...
One thing that has confused me a bit, is all the added applications (which i never use) that come with the standard stock roms..
i.e: Footprints, Peep, Teeter, Stocks. (as examples).
I have to say i'm a fan of the HTC Sense experience. I've tried a few other custom ROM's, which were great but eventually went back to stock (just because i liked the sense features).
From all the ROM's ive seen and read about, none seem to be a full Sense interface, with minimal apps pre-loaded. Unless i'm having trouble with my reading !
I like the sound of the GB upgrade, but it sounds a bit incomplete. And i'm unsure weather to wait a while to see what's developed from it, or load it.
***** my question is this... *****
Is it possible, or are there plans within the XDA dev community to develop the HTC Desire GB ROM just released, into something polished and more mainstream for general users (like myself). with the minimum required pre-loaded apps for functionality. Then each individual could install apps from market that are important and useful to them. With full HTC sense feature.
Would this also save memory, reducing the number of pre-loaded apps?
Only apps removed, but included in the zip as apk are flashlight and teeter. The rest can be downloaded from the market. I'm not sure I understand completely why do you think this is not a 'complete' Sense experience?

im just guessing at the "not complete sense experience" as its a developer release.
How stable is it, and is it suitable for general consumers to update to?

I flashed it as it came out and for me it is completely stable.
You may a well not bother with the update. A lot of people think that its not worth losing root and not able to get it back. Devs will use it though so expect some cool things to come out soon. NeoPhyte has already released the update into his rom that isn't a hybrid. If you give it a little time you will be able to try the update out without losing root.

Hi dsbnz,
I agree with every word you said.
I also like sense and the being-stock feeling.
Since I did not find anything that suits my needs I created my own Rom. I actually rooted the last official gb Rom with dsixda, removed some bloatware introduced by HTC (eg peep, stock, live wallpapers, some widget I never used, etc) and all applications that can be downloaded from the market (eg maps, gmail, voice search, etc).
I ended up with a very nice, stable and light Rom that fits into the data++ hboot.
You can try to do something similar. It's really not that hard.
In alternative I might share what I've done. If there is some interest I have no problem in posting it here in xda.

I'm quite liking the sound of what youve done with your rom. I'm somewhat minimalistic, and like the bare minimum apps included in an OS.
i'd really like some of the new capabilities of the new GB rom (i.e "reboot" added to power menu, Wifi-N etc). If that rom could be fine tuned to pretty much as youve done with your's i'd install it. Actually until then if you're is stock (2.29?) without the fat. i'd be even happier having that while i wait

Mine is not based on 2.29 but on 3.14 (the last GB release of few days ago), so it already includes the capabilities you are talking about.
I'll find a way to upload it here (any suggestion?).
I just didn't think it could catch some interest, since all other roms here are full of additional stuff/features/mods while I kept mine very simple and as close as possible to a bloatware-free stock.
I love Sense. Trouble is with the new official GingerBread its got old Sense. That's why I came here and got a ROM with Sense 2.1. I'm going to remove some of the stuff I don't want with ADB and then, happy days a ROM to my liking

First line - this is for experienced users. Or they have massively misunderstood the term 'developer'. This is THE update. Stable and official. No beta as they seem to sprout all over this place. Lol beta

Fantastic thanks!. before i get flashing is there any specific procedure to upgrading with this rom you've provided? Also, from what i've read (if ive read it correctly), upgrading to the new rom from HTC removes any chance of downgrading to 2.29/rooting etc. same case with your rom?
Cheers, and thanks to everyone who's commented all great feedback.
Glad that it helped...
If you have questions about the ROM can you please post them in the Rom thread? So that I don't have to keep track of both threads.
In this way also people reading the ROM thread can benefit.

cool thanks again, will redirect to the rom thread with questions
I've just made a fresh install of android 2.3.3 but the phone keeps saying I have low memory (<20MB) on it. I've used app2sd to place ALL of the apps on the SD but no help still. I've tried some forums allready but I still have no idea how to fix this. Sometimes it can't even open my sms as it says the problem again is memory low.
If anyone can redirect me to some page or forum where this is resolved, or help me solve the problem.
Really sorry for taking your time if the solution is easier to find on google than I thought but I had no luck finding it.
Thanks in advance.
Other info: s-off-ed, android installed from http://htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads , for any other info just ask.
Also SD is 4gb.
With app2sd you will be able to move apps to SD (FAT32-partition) if the developer of the app included this feature. So I recommend to partiton your SD card with a FAT32 and an EXT4-partition with at least 1 GB (partition either with GParted or your recovery, if it supports it) and flash an A2SD+ or a DATA2SD-script via recovery.

I agree Sebs Runny Mede 4.0.2.SE - super fast and stable but only if you use have CM7/R2 with A2SDSX. I have my ext 4 partition set to 1.5 GB and after install show 1 GB of internal memory for APPS. - WOW !
Thanks but I'm really keen on keeping this version of android on. I was actually wondering what could be causing this problem of low memory space as there is almost no apps on the device (I've moved everything to SD).
Could my problem be that I haven't formatted the device while I was reinstalling android or something????
So how can I solve the problem within this OS?
I can't believe that the internal disk is full when I have nothing on it. Could sms and e-mail really take that much space as I see only those two could be making the problem.
My phone says that there is 137mb used and 11free since I've installed the new OS. I thought the internal drive should be larger than that.
Really if there is no other way of solving this I might be willing to install the supernova but I'm really hoping there's some easier way.

Yep, there is an easier way: Seb's Runnymede AIO 4.0.3
Ok, seriously: Rooting and flashing is not that hard and worth the effort - but I would highly recommend Seb's Runnymede over Supernova, too, as it's way more smooth than Supernova, which was extremely laggy - at least on my Desire.
Greets, Magpie
P.S.: Your SD card should be at least Class 6 (and max. 16 GB).

But you could at least try - or tell my Desire about these wonderful threads, which will make it run faster. And these threads, which will void my own experiences, the ones, I've seen with my non enlightened eyes ... at least they are mine.
Greets, Magpie - just own experiences count
P.S.: You may have heard already that there are a couple of different hardware combinations out there. And perhaps my Desire is on the slow side and probably my combination of phone and card may not be the fastest around, but, nevertheless, a phone/card, being on the laggy side, is an even better meter for the performance of a ROM than a phone/card which is fast anyway and will run at lightspeed with even a croppy ROM.
