I know the 2.3 SDK is out and some builds have popped up showcasing some basic gingerbread features. I am curious as to when we can expect to see stable builds of gingerbread appear that can be used as a daily ROM.
I wasnt in the root and ROM game when Froyo was released so i have no concept of what to expect. Does the release of the Nexus S bring us closer? Will we have to wait for Verizon devices to receive the update?
A few weeks after source is released.
I would say shortly after the source code is released; exactly how fast depends on how much has to be done for it to be made compatible. You will see stock OS and kernels first.. sense will follow much later.
do we know when the source code will be released?
I am pretty sure source the source was releases today for the N 1

Kernel sources are different from the android system that we need
Patience, OP, patience.
If you can't wait, get to work on it!
I am not a huge fan of vanilla android, but I will try out some gingerbread, but I would prefer gingerbread with sense!
I don't think its out of the question to see a daily driver after a system dump of the nexus one/s is pulled.

Is there any rom for the G2 that is nearly pure AOSP. CM is good but I want something as pure as possible.
Try stock, but flash CM's baconbits. Its just your stock rom, but with an overclocking kernel and trackpad wake. Not the entire rom intself. It can be found in rom manager under CM.

I'm more interested in Gingerbread. I guess I'll just root and uninstall the bloatware.
You can get adventurous and install the early early cmsrc gingerbread builds. Pretty much all stock from google src, be weary though, nothing comes bug free.

Is there any dev that is willing to build from AOSP with proper modifications for the G2? I like the pure android experience on the HD2, would love to see it on the G2. Willing to donate...
Can you just let this thread die?

You can use the build vision guide, just dont say cyanogen. Search for build froyo from source st0kes. It is the same for gb
I just recently installed AOSP on my brother's G1 (my old phone) and I have to say it's an excellent rom. Having something that bareboned on the G2 would be really nice.

I have been reading into it for a while, the thing is that I do not have the time at all to take on such a feat. I'm in my last semester in Electrical Engineering and have piled on 22 credit hours, plus research, plus ~30 hours a week at my robotics team. The only chance I'll get is this summer, was hoping something before that lol.
As you can see I'm not the only one.

Now it's only a matter of time till our awesome devs get it to run on our phones!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go Devs, Go Devs!
let the development start !!
REALLY exciting news!!! Hope the CM team picks up ICS in their nightlies quickly!
Cant wait to try the new interface/functions, some features should be similar to Sense roms.
Awesome!...now both the devs and the CM team can work on outing above perfect ROMs for our 'still very much alive; HD2!!!...its only a matter of time i guess. And with talk of a possible Siri port for Android, things are really looking up for the HD2...and dont forget that the full 576MB of RAM has not been unleasehd until now.If all the above is made possible, i think the HD2 will be relevant for at least one more year...
Woohooooo..!!!
Gonna get the ICS on the HD2 pretty soon now..!!!
Yessshhh!!! Cmon devss !! Ics before xmas!!! :d
Wrong section
woop woop !
So our HD2 is still fast enough for this ICS right?????????? Lol just want to make sure, don't want it to be like the current sense 3.0 roms

You cant compare stock Android to Sense. Sense is android with ****loads of bloat code added to it. Dont get me wrong I like Sense but im really looking forward to stock ICS.
Compared to Gingerbread, how long you think until we have a functional port to ICS, just asking since I want into Android when Gingerbread was released

It depends, GB and ICS are quite a bit different than froyo was to GB. If I remember correctly it took a couple of weeks to a month after GB came out when we had a stable enough build to be considered daily.
Proper drivers are gonna determine how fast we get ICS developed on the HD2.
I can't decide which I'm more excited about: ICS itself, or the included Honeycomb source!
Either way, there is no other phone I would want to have right now!

Well, as I remember it, Gingerbread was released around the same time last year. And just before Christmas there were many different available roms that ran smoothly without a lot of issues.
So lets, hope this will hold true with the ICS release as well.
waiting ICS HD2
Nice, cant wait till the ROM i use gets updated to 4.0
New interface/functions look epic
Will be getting a Nexus Galaxy next januari
free bump..

stock pics rs are out there, but since the base is unofficial and 'leaked', they are all tweaked a little.
Soon the official pics update will be released and you will be able to just get the ota update.
Also, if you look in the development forum you'll see that there is an alpha release that is there, but it is very raw and in early development.
Hope hat helps,
Sean

Yes we will get stable AOSP 4.0, it's in the works.
you have to remember that all the ICS roms out now are leaks and unoffical releases. Once an offical build hits its a tweak and customize frenzy. Thats when you get somethng stable. these roms are just "test" for a more stable rom. Ive seen android 2.1 go through hundreds of different leaks before a stable build hits
I just can't wait for stock ICS! it was great on my nexus s so I know it gonna be a best on this!
They are still in nightly mode. I would suspect a release candidate by the end of the month, with the ota coming in late April.

Hi,
Now I did search as much as possible on the interwebs, like tiamat's blog, xda, miui forums etc. So I guess I'll go ahead and ask this sorta noob question eek: oh no he didn't ).
Why are there no 3.0 kernels and what would be the advantage of them? On a tangent, I note that even the transformer prime has no 3.0 kernel...

Linux kernel version 3.x. As in we are currently using kernel version 2.6.35.x.. Galaxy nexus has 3.08 kernel or something.
Sent from my Incredible 2 using XDA
We're currently using modified gingerbread kernels (the 2.6 ones i think?) because we havent received kernel source from HTC yet
This phone is slated for an ICS update, once we get that and kernel source i'm pretty sure a 3.0 kernel will follow
It's because we don't have an official update yet. That's what all the ICS roms are pretty much waiting for - an offical ICS kernel from HTC.

Okay. So as I understand the kernel will have several proprietary modules and therefore we can't compile our own 3.0 kernel yet? As it may cause several incompatibilities, am I right?

No, we just can't compile one because we don't have source.

I am confused. The linux kernel is open source. So the Source code for the 3.0 kernel is available. So, what do you mean by "we don't have source"? Are you referring to any drivers whose modules we may not have as they are proprietary? Or something else?
Anyway, I just realized thanks to this article that the 3.0 kernel is no big deal and has no new, "awesome" features and is not a major jump like the GB to ICS, or gnome 2 to gnome 3, or the KDE 3 to KDE 4 jump... Just a new numbering scheme. So, may be the kernel we have now is more than enough to run ICS (except for the camera glitch though...)
Thanks for the responses guys!

The Linux kernel is, yes. However, a kernel is very device specific. So, without having one from an OTA or better yet, HTC releasing kernel source code for this device specifically, we can't make any. So far (as stated before), all our ics ROMs are using hacked up gingerbread kernels (which is an incredible feat in itself). We have basic kernel source code, sure, but what we're lacking is the proprietary drivers, libs, and other stuff that makes this device run.
Hope this all made sense.

Each kernel is device specific with the oem s specific changes....it is possible to build one without the.exact source...but you would need some similar source for reference like teamhacksung using the nexus s as a base for sgs phones

Yes, this helps me understand it better. Anyway, I'm not really waiting for the 3.0 kernel anymore as I learned it was just a renumbering scheme! I was expecting I could launch a space shuttle with it, like I can drive my car supersonic with ICS (hehehe..) But it apparently has just the usual dose of bug fixes compared to our current kernel.
Thanks y'all!
What's the point of a build that release every single day? Are changes made every single day? And I really mean this question.
I'm pretty new at the aosp type roms.
Do they eventually get to a rom that needs no more changes and then stop?
Thanks in advance.

Nightly builds are a common software development practice. The build is automated. It helps ensure that the software builds and also provides an easy way to determine when a bug was introduced (by checking the older builds to find the last one without the bug).
When the developers feel they have something worthy of an official release, they will make one. CM9 has not reached a release point yet for our device, so you have to run a nightly if you want to try it. If you can't wait for a release and you're willing to tolerate some bugs, try it. Otherwise wait for the official release.

They make daily changes that they need tested by the GenPop. And the easiest way to test is to crowd source.
Development on AOSP ROMs will never stop due to it being "perfect" they will continue to improve it until the next version of Android is deemed stable or officially released from the manufacturer. Then the old version will typically be abandoned.
However, at certain points, developers will release "Official" or "stable" builds they feel are acceptable for day-to-day use with minimal bugs.
