[Q] Broken glass, lcd dead. - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
so for the last few days my Incredible ceased to be so Incredible. I dropped the phone (trying to save a damn dog mind you), cracked the screen, bought a replacement, killed the lcd... yada yada yada. Lots of tension headaches and wasted money, i'm getting a new one... well for free.
My question is, based on the things i have read, will the rooting process and rom installation etc. be any different on the new phone. I assume the lcd will be the one HTC switched to after the shortage.
Thanks peeps.

From what I understand if you tell them you want another AMOLED that's what they'll give you, let us know how it works out.

At this point i'm just glad i can actually get a new phone for free. I didn't even think about asking for an AMOLED lcd when the representative told me the good news. He placed the order in front me and i was happily on my way. This is huge for me that they did this so i can't really ask for much.
So my question remains, will there be anything different in the rooting process etc.?
Thanks.

The recovery is different I do believe that's it

I received a phone with hardware version 0002. AMOLED i luvs yous
I need to go back and thank the Verizon peeps.

Unreal2k, would you mind telling me if you asked for the phone from VZW or HTC? I'm thinking of buying an inc and would prefer amoled. thanks

I never thought to ask for AMOLED when I got my Incredible. I had a hell of a time rooting it with the LCD. Luckily i know someone who was able to fix it.

I went directly to VZW. If you are buying a new phone your situation will probably be different. I don't even think they sell AMOLEDs any more.
Mine came like that because it was a re certified. Hope this helps.

I didn't really ask. My guess is that there are way more re certified AMOLEDs than SLCDs at this point. But who knows, some other person in the forums suggested if you had an AMOLED that's what they will exchange.

Yeah that was me. When we order the replacements the system knows if your original purchase was an AMOLED or SLCD and populates the replacement code accordingly. There is a minor difference in the SKU in our inventory.

[Q] Help needed: Ordering new LCD screen, and not sure which to order, please help.

Thanks in advance for reading guys.
Anyways, I have a dead pixel that just annoys the holy hell out of me, so I've decided to order a new screen.
I've got a pretty decent deal on ebay for a front housing+LCD. However, his listing says he has some that say 002 and some that say 003, and to specify which I want....
I'm not sure which to order. I have a Novatech panel, and would like another, but is that related to the 002 or 003 thing? Also, if it isn't related, is there anywhere on the LCD that he can check to see if it's a Novatech panel, so that I can include that in my message to him?
I believe all novas are 003 but not all 003s are novas. Without running a log I dont think there's any way to be sure which screen type it is. Hope this helps.
You can't just get your EVO replaced for light leakage or something?
@Dglowe -
Thank you for the fast and awesome response... I guess I'll just have to try my luck with it, lol. I guess I'll just go for the 003 and see what happens. Ugh... I hate not knowing though.
@TheBiles -
I guess I **COULD**, but honestly, don't want to go through the whole re-rooting and all that ****.

UnrEVOked Forever is one-click NAND unlock. Plus, you keep your warranty.
I keep my warranty either way.
I guess my big thing is that I don't want refurbished stuff. I read a lot on here about people ending up getting 3 and 4 phones because of the refurbs coming in crooked. It's jsut not really **** I want to deal with if that makes sense.

All 002 are Nova
003 - Nova and Epson
Epson oversaturate colors; Nova has purple hued black. Nova is brighter.
Just go with 003. It is arguable whether Nova or Epson is better.
@ Jerry
Are you pretty sure about that? Not saying you aren't, but just wanting to know u are before I go ahead and order.
@ theBiles
Yea, most likely. PS3, computer, and Xbox modding it what I do for kicks outside of graphic design.

I stopped updating after a while. And now days, 003 Epson and Nova screens are still being produced. HTC didn't choose one to use as far as I know. This screen thing is probably similar to the touch digitizer situation (3 vs 5 points, just different suppliers)
Ok, so it seems like my best bet is just getting the 002 and being fine. I liek my Novatch.
Either way you will be fine. I had the 002 Nova and when I had my replacement they gave me a brand new 003 Epson. At first I wasn't sure I liked the Epson better or not since I was really used to the Nova. I have the DROID X as well and its more in line with the Epson screen.
After a couple of days with the Epson I like the Epson better. Not as bright but I do not feel the screen is oversaturated and the Multi-touch is more responsive to me. I have done many dotty tests and others. Also the Epson has 5 point which is of no use to me or many of us but I thought I would throw that out there. I have tested 4 EVO's with Nova's and non of them have 5pt MT. My friend just got his EVO 4G and its Epson and it has 5pt MT.
I understand your concern about having to get a refurb but to be honest most of are new that are being replaced at this moment. The Sprint Tech's when i took mine in could not open it because they were told to replace the phones only. They were not allowed to open them. Take what they said as you will. I did get a new phone replacement.
Good luck. Let us know who the removal goes. Take lots of pictures and perhaps one of us will put together a guide on it for you.
Yea. I feel better about potentially getitng an Epson panel now, but, I want to get an 002 just to have something I'm used to looking at.
I'll take tons of pictures, of course, and post them on the board. It looks pretty simple though. Looking at the pictures, it honestly looks like two ribbons to plug into the motherboard, and it's pretty set. Of course, we'll see though.
Asurion just sent me a brand new evo to replace the one my friends dog took a piss on.
How's you know it was brand new dude?
TJ - most of them are new. They aren't fixing them at this moment. I even called HTC on that. They are asking them to replace them with new ones and not refurbs since the issue isn't just replacing the screen. The lightleaks were a manufacturing design error and is not fixable.
You might get a replacement for other problems not sure. Most of the ones I have heard about have been new. There was a code that you can do. I forgot.
I got mine in a new unopened box. Refurbs don't get that from what I have seen. Usually they ask that you keep the battery, backcover, SD card, etc. In my case they asked for the whole thing back and my friends that had theirs replaced as well. They did let me keep my SD card. probably for security reasons.
I did replaced the LCD on my HTC HD and it was rather painless. The ribbon slides in easy with a steady hand or tweezers. I used a paperclip medium sized to place my glue correctly/evenly and it was great. $25.00 compared to $350 from HTC.
Man, if I coudl get garunteed a ****ign novatech, I'd just do an asurion claim tomorrow.

because it was in a new unopened box with all accessories when they send a refurb it does not include the battery, ect. Plus not that all companies do it but it has to be marked as a refurb if it in fact is.

Not quite sure what you've been reading, but these are two completely different physical devices. You're not gonna be sticking a 4 inch SLCD into an Incredible anytime soon, nor swapping out SoC's.
If you mean swapping the ROM for something running Sense 2.1, that's easy. Just find any Sense 2.1 ROM and you'll basically be having the same experience, albeit slower, as a dInc2.

I think he means how people are getting their Inc replaced by Asurion for an Inc 2. For that, your Inc would have to have a hardware failure or something and you'd have to be lucky enough for Asurion to be out of Inc 1's in your area. Then you'll probably pay a premium of like $100 or so to get an Inc 2.

Most likely, Verizon will just give you a refurbished Inc 1. Also, he was being sarcastic about putting a 4 inch screen in the Inc. Lol

Unless you bought the phone from Verizon, they have no obligation to honor the warranty that would usually cover hardware issues like a blown speaker, etc.

By all means, see what they say. I just know what I've been told by Verizon, although they can choose to make an "exception" and help you out. Happened to me when I got a D2 from a friend with a faulty camera. They did end up replacing it, but made sure to let me know that since I didn't actually get the phone from them, they didn't "have" to help me.
It never hurts to try. Sometimes they'll throw you a bone and help you out, and other times they won't. It's all in the luck of the draw.

I'd love for them to be like oh yeah you don't need this or that but we will, any ways...
Good luck. Verizon is a bunch of bastards. I went through 4 Droid Eris' and they never did anything but send me another refurb, over and over. We got lucky tho, had one early upgrade and there was a Buy 1 get 1 on the Dinc. Then again I had heard of people breaking their Eris intentionally and Verizon swapped it for a Dinc on their first go....
So it all depends. If your phone is in good working condition, do you want to risk breaking it and possibly getting a phone in worse condition than your current one? Or do you just want to wait the 2 years for your contract to be up and get the latest hot phone?
A year from now the Inc 2 will be old like the Inc is now. Then you'll have the saaammeee dilemma my friend.

I've read somewhere about people getting their Incs replaced with Inc2s if they received the OTA GB update and had issues. That's a different case though.

[Q] Really thinking of buying one, but still a few fears...

Hi, long time lurker, first time poster :3 Iv done a LOT of research on this phone (borderline overkill) but I still have a few questions about it:
1) I read about a problem with the screen where a hairline crack under the top-layer glass would just randomly appear...how normal is this
2) For retailers, how good is Negri, Expansys and L2D2 in terms of warranty? like in the case of said hairline crack? -I live in the US in case that would affect how they would do warranty
I really really want this stunning looking phone xD I already know about the issues with the color tint and radios but they seem like they could possibly be fixed on the software side so I'm not too worried there. I have no experience with the 3 listed companies and I don't want to plop 500-700 for a phone and be left out in the water y'know?
any and all help/input/opinions will be greatly appreciated.
Okay first, I've never gotten this line once I'm thinking it varies from device to device. And also, what carrier are you on?
the all mighty...AT&T
I tried to get a warranty replacement for the vibrator through Negri Electronics and never got a reply.
No hairline crack. I love this phone and learned to live with the weird vibration. I bought from Negri no problem. Besides the warranty thing... I think I wasn't persistent enough with asking them for a replacement. Either way, it shouldn't take more than once to get their attention, and I'm still a little bummed out about it all.

you have a point. Thing is, you go to any forum for any new device and you'll see reports of manufacturing defects. You shouldn't be spending your last penny on an unlocked phone for any situation. There will always be a chance you'll buy it and it'll be broken and you won't get a replacement. Just keep it in mind.
If you decide its worth it, then get it!

[Q] Faulty LTE Radio? (VZW) Which Part to Swap Out?

I received a CLNR replacement from VZW this weekend due to massive banding on my original device. Take it out inspect it for scratches, fire up the phone, check out the screen for banding etc. No scratches, screen has no banding/dead pixels and I assume all is well! Much to my dismay when I try to DL apps, surf the net or stream Netflix , make calls etc. the phone cannot keep a signal to save it's life. It has full 4G signal and after I access data or make a call, the bars are gone and there's a x in the signal bars. When this occurs, I cannot makes calls or access data etc etc. When I switch from LTE/CDMA to CDMA only I have a stable data connection, and calls can be made etc. Would I need to switch out the entire main motherboard or would I just need to swap out the antenna? I've been searching around for an answer and cannot seem to find one. Checked out a few tear downs and it seems simple enough to remove. I do have experience tearing apart and rebuilding so I do not see any issues. Thank you for any input!
If you got a CLNR and its faulty, get another replacement. Why would you try to open it and fix it, potentially breaking and voiding warranty, when you can just get it replaced for free?

Well I'm tired of playing the warranty exchange game and getting a crappier one. The screen on the one w/ the faulty radio is PERFECT. No banding, no discoloration etc. Besides I like to rip crap apart, if I break it I'll just buy another one . Plus I don't see any void warranty stickers in plain view ;o.

If you have ever gotten a Verizon CLNR you would know. I've received THREE Nexus' with scratched screens out of the box. I'm tired of the asshattery of their CLNR program. Well if you're so loaded, I'm surprised you dealt with CLNR in the first place... why not just buy a new phone every time you get a scratch on the screen there moneybags?
I dealt with it at Sprint and after 4 replacements I left my contract with them. I know it sucks, but seriously choosing to rip your phone apart and replace an antenna (which may or may not fix the problem) when you can have them replace the phone free makes absolutely no sense to me. CLNR sucks, but you're bound to get an acceptable one eventually, or you should be able to complain after so many replacements and get an actually new device.

Well it's kinda hard to tell through words cause of lack of tone. If it was just a joke I apologize. Really wasn't trying to brag either. Just making a point if I derp I can recover.

T-a mobile gives me a hard time....

The first time I had the LG G3 I went to return it for an exchange at the last day (my 14th) day. As a result I got into an argument with the sales representative about the display. I told her that the digitizer is visible on mine and it bugs the crap out of me, and so I wanted to excersize my right for an exchange for another G3. Then she started spewing nonsense and saying things like "Well you can't really see it, so it's not a big deal", etc. Well it is a pretty big deal if you buy a $600 product.
We ended up exchanging the phone 2 times straight that day. The second G3 I got had an extremely visible digitizer and the screen had a bad yellow tint. The third G3 was the last they will give me and they made it very clear to me that no matter what it is they won't exchange it. Guess what? It still has a more visible digitizer than my original one and the color temperature was still allot warmer. My whites look...yellowish.
I'm sorry for the rant, but why would those employees give me such a hard time trying to exchange a product? Its rediculus. Now I'm stuck with one worse than the original when it comes to the screen...
Funny never ever ever had a problem returning a phone with in the 14 days
also they will do that if you returned it a time or 2 already it cost the store money each time you do and exchange
also if your a PITA customer lol they will give you a hard time just for the fun of it
It cost the store money end of the day its business
Yeah and I believe their personal statistics (or the store's) are marred due to returns and exchanges.

I've seen you post about this type of thing in a couple of different places. I think you're being too picky. I think it's very unlikely 3 G3s in a row had problems.

The first one had a minimal visible digitizer with a nice toned display. But it had backlight bleeds on the edge. The second one was just completely washed out with an extremely visible digitizer that it was just exchanged on the spot. The third one I had no choice but to keep, but the digitizer was not as visible and the display still had a yellow tint compared to the original.
If you ask me for $600 I have all the right to exchange the phones all the way until I final have a good one without any physical flaws.
Didn't you return your G3 for dust too? How many have you tried? Gosh you really are trying to break the record of some guy on G+ returning like 10 different G3's at T-Mobile and AT&T. Then he gets mad at T-Mobile for them having to mail him a check even though he paid cash. I think he did that twice. lmao Don't tell that's you? lol
This is more lg's problem. Perhaps you should take it up with them instead of the middle man I bet you would actually get somewhere.

That was the first one. The second one was exchanged again on the spot for an obvious faulty display.

What are my chances of actually getting a good phone with LG vs T-mobile?
I hate the fact that all the gray colors on my G3 have a yellow tint to them now. Man this kinda blows. Even with I use trickster mod.

I can consider myself very lucky for owning a flawless unit then.
I know if you came in to my store and tried that you would have gotten turned way and told to take it up with LG since we would have allowed you 1 exchange NOT 2 or 3

Think you have to send your phone to LG so you would need another phone. I don't think it's a quick process and I doubt they look over the phone with a magnifying glass to see the slightest thing wrong if it's even wrong. I guess worth a shot. If it was me I would've just returned it and got a different phone or wait a month and try again.

Yeah it will take a week at the minimum to get the new phone more likely 2 - 3. I would have done the same thing as you and got the m8 or s5. Luckily I got a great phone and didn't need to.

Do you have the G+ link for that?

This thread reminds me about being on MacRumors and people talking about how they had returned like seven iPads until they got one that didn't have one of the several ridiculously impossible to notice defects.
This is why I'm glad I don't work retail any more. It made me wish there was a policy to be allowed to slap customers for being absurd.

I know if you tried to do that with me I would be sure to put you in a very very tough position when it comes to your job. If you sell me something, it better be as damn good as it was advertised. If you exchange a faulty product, it better be better and not WORSE than the one I just had.

Yes but the problem is that with LG I have to send in the phone. That's something I cannot afford to do since I have no spare phones. Can they not just send me a unit and then I ship mine back?

If you can not see the flaw, you must be blind. Sorry. But the display models and the first G3 I had where all cooler than the one I currently have...by a good margin. So no, its a very VISIBLE flaw. Well I wouldn't call it a flaw, but out of the ordinary characteristic.

Indecision on the definition of flaw? I think you need a new hobby...this phone thing doesn't seem to be working out for you.
