Though there are very few CDMA phones in market... so you have very less possibilities....sorry for that..
But enjoy what you got..
how can I tell if the rom is lte or gsm? does it even matter?
Yes it matters.
There are 2 development sub-forums here on XDA for the Nexus. One is for GSM the other is for CDMA handsets. Simply read the description of both of them and you will clearly see which one is for which.

it matters. That's why there are different sections for GSM Nexus development and CDMA/LTE nexus development.
If you are on Verizon you want LTE roms. If you aren't you want GSM roms.

How can you tell the difference? If you flash a GSM from on an LTE device it'll implode and cause the apocalypse.

you won't be able to get "phone" service
Stable/battery/fastest
Which rom/kernel combo has the fastest and yet stable and better battery life than stock?
They aren't compatible but they're pretty much the same as far as features and stuff. Often you'll find the "same" rom in both forums.

AOKP + Franco Kernel
or Bigxie + Franco Kernel... either one can't go wrong, take a look at each and see which one has the most features you'd enjoy using.
As a ex owner of a sensation and galaxy S, this forum has only got a small handful of GSM Roms, the majority of roms are for CDMA which cant be flashed to our GSM phones, so, are there any roms coming soon? chefs?
also some for locked bootloaders, untill i can get mine unlocked please.

sorry if already asked, can you use rom from different variant for example use sprints's rom for original gnexus?
NO. You must use the ROM that is specifically designed for your device. Otherwise, you'll be running into issues. The ROMs are made for each model specifically because they have different radio interfaces and other device-specific parts.
so there are only 3 variants?? if its not sprint or verizon then you must be holding the orignal right? thanks for answering

Yes, only 3: Verizon, Sprint, and the GSM version.

GSM, Verizon, Sprint. The regular "Galaxy Nexus Android Development" section is for the GSM, the other named ones are for the specific carrier models.
I was simply wondering if anyone knew a kikat ROM that works with AWS bands on galaxy nexus.

Also what is AWS band?
Mod should move this post to the right section..
. An AWS band is a mobile network frequency band used by wind mobile.

I don't know what you're talking about. All ROMs on whatever version of Android that I've ever ran work with AWS on Wind. ROMs don't change your phone's radio/baseband/hardware so no worries about reception whatsoever. If you want a generic 4.4 ROM recommendation, I'm currently using Paranoid Android 4.5beta2, beta3 should be out soon.
Yes. But there are different models of the phone that work with different bands. I need a ROM for the AWS model

I did some research and found nothing about radio baseband AWS*.
Is AWS for Toro, Toro plus OR Maguro?
Silly me. I should have just done this based on the board/hardware names. I believe it is a toro because it runs android 4.2.1

UPDATE:
Fastboot says board name is tuna. I do not know what to say

You ahve to learn a lot of your Nexus.
Galaxy Nexus is a tuna.
Tuna is common device name for Galaxy Nexus.
Maguro is a GSM Nexus
Toro is CDMA and Toroplus is CDMA too.
Toro: Verizon
ToroPlus: Sprint
To see what versoin you have:
Go to Settings > About phone
Or read build.prop from /system/
Next: Learn about your Nexus and then you know everything what you have to know about your "AWS" radio band...
I know Maguro works on AWS. You'd have to look up the bands of Toro and Toroplus to tell whether those ones function as well. But if you bought yours from Wind, I'm going to say that I'm 95% sure you have the Maguro variant (GSM). Just go here for roms then: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-nexus/development
