Hello,
I am a new user and can someone tell me the steps I should follow.
I haven't rooted the device or anything yet, and I was also wondering what the best ROM for the EVO was... It has to have full functionality and be faster than the stock ROM. Can someone tell me what fits the category?
Thanks

Thats an opinion based question. I think CM is best, but it doesnt have working WiMax or HDMI. You're gonna want a sense based rom, as those do have working 4g/HDMI. Try some of the more popular ones until you find one that you like.
This kinda question is better asked in Q/A or General.
How do I root?
I just got the phone yesterday from the sprint store and was wondering if I could root it. It just came with 2.2 and when I saw this, it said new evos won't work.

gokuman,
You probably won't get many replies to this thread, as your questions are very open ended, and also this probably isn't the best place to ask. You really need to post these kind of questions in the Evo Q&A forum. With that said, since you're new, I'll try to help.
First off, you need to root your device. There are multiple posts on this topic depending on what version of the Evo you have - the new ones use a different method than the older ones.
As far as ROM's go, there are two flavors - AOSP and Sense. AOSP is the original "Android as Google intended it" with no skins, tweaks, etc. It's very fast, very stable and completely open-source (if you've ever used or seen a Nexus One, this runs stock AOSP android). The downside is that AOSP (at this time) does not support 4G, so if you live in a 4G area, bear this in mind.
Of the AOSP ROMs there are two that stand out: Cyanogen Mod 6.1 (known as CM 6.1) and MIUI. Both are excellent, although I prefer CM 6.1.
Sense ROM's are very similar to to the software that came on your phone. There are multiple options available, although my two personal favorites are Azrael X 2.1 and Sprint Lovers ROM. No disrespect to anyone else, but these are the ones that have worked best for me... With that said, do your research and try a few to make your own conclusions. Most importantly, once you've done some experimenting, post back and let us know your findings.
Thanks,
Matt_TX

What hboot version did it ship with? That currently dictates your rooting options.
Turn your phone off. Then turn back on holding pwr+vol down. Hboot will be listed.
If you have 2.02 see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
Otherwise see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=787304
Whatever method you choose be patient, make sure you read the whole post a few times through before you root, and follow the directions exactly. Do that and you will be up and running quick.
Definately in the wrong section, but the best answer is there is no best Rom.
There are best roms for different people. Roms are like cars, there is a different rom for each person. And even then who two people set up the same rom will be so different it's not even funny, because within each rom are options, just like in a car.
I've used Cyanogen and Myn's mainly myself. No suprise, those are both also the most visited and posted in threads int he development section. They are kind of like the Chevy and Ford of the Roms.
Cyanogen is AOSP without sense, and no working 4g/hdmi as stated.
Myn's is a heavily themed sense based rom with everything working, it's very visually appealing, and yet smooth and snappy.
The third Rom I'd quickly mention would be MIUI, if you wanted an Iphone but cant have one, that rom is for you, it is probably the most dev intensive rom of all. It's made by Chinese devs, but the shear amount of detail put into it is breathtaking, they have re organized all the menus and visuals of the rom, but the crazy thing is, they didn't stop there, if you load a new app on it from the market, it actually will change the menus within that app to their system(one that looks very much like an Iphone) I recommend everyone try that rom at least once, It wasn't for me, but it doesn't mean that the attention to detail, and extensiveness of the UI they put in it did not impress me to no ends.
The amount of good roms out there is crazy though, Azrael, Sprint Lovers, Fresh, Evio, Calkulin's... the list just goes on and on, so try a bunch and find one you like, just like buying a car.
stick with the best ignore the rest...MYNS WARM 2.2 RLS4 but just try diff kernels and see what works best! njoy

I was an avid CM fan when I had my first EVO, then it got stolen, and by the time I had bought another one, MIUI came out. So I figured I'd try it since it's still AOSP and I've been using it ever since. It just streamlines things so well for you, and running off of their stock kernel it's the snappiest ROM I've ever used.

Ok, one quick question before i root
I checked my HBOOT and it showed:
0.97.0000
It's totally different than the ones I was told of, can I still root?
If I can, just tell me, and I'll do it
Thanks
Two pages on a thread that wouldn't exist if you read the very first sticky in this subforum.
In that sticky is also a link for an auto rooter but I guess reading already available information is harder than having people hold your hand and spoon feed you.

IS THERE a stable, 2.3 ROM for the EVO 4G out there, that supports ALL the hardware features of the Evo?!
A simple question that you think would be easy to answer, but none of the ROM descriptions actually contain this information. And go spend 2 hours going through 300 pages of comments, most of them completely useless.
This forum is such a horrible way to store all this information, you hackers really need to come up with an alternative.
You need to calm down buddy!!! If you don't like what you see on xda go somewhere else! There will never be a solid rom they just get better and better!!

WOW! Someone needs to get some booty
First off, wow, asking for a stable version of an operating system that's barely out on any phone yet is so terrible that it obviously seems you haven't been doing hours of reading. Skim through the first page of the Q&A section for the evo or any of most recent pages on those "300 pages" of comments and you will find people talking about their problems with these ROMs.
Besides that... ruling out the terrible wiki we have for the evo, I can only offer my own opinion in what gingerbread ROM I believe is best. I suggest the latest Cyanogen Mod 7 RC if you don't keep up with the nightlies. CM7 has just about every feature the evo is hardware capable of. It runs fine for me along with Savaged Zen's kernel. Try out different kernels and ROMs to see what is best for you instead of relying on 300 pages of comments.
Hahahahahahahahahahaha!! That's for sure!

OP,
It's fine if you don't want to search. It's fine if you don't want to read through threads that are hundreds of pages long. Both of those things are really your problem, not anybody's here. Also, it's fine if you would prefer a "cleaner" interface or a more organized presentation of ROMS available for the EVO; even I think that's a good idea that someone could really take advantage of on their own personal website with AdSense or something.
But what isn't fine is:
"...you people..."
"...it's such a damn mess, there's no making sense of it! it's crazy!"
"...300 pages of comments, most of them completely useless."
"This forum is such a horrible way to store all this information, you hackers really need to come up with an alternative."
If you came in here to post that and expected not to be insulted, called a troll, or start a flame fest then you, my friend, have some maturing to do.
...most if not all are beta's or rc's (or based off), so i say no!
Nightly 36 of CM7 is working 100% for everything I've tried thus far (4G, wifi tethering, maps, camera) but there's no guarantee there won't be issues later.
First, I can say the information here is some what scattered but the amount of the users on this site would make it nearly impossible for a group of non paid Admins to keep track of. Second, almost all version of GB are as close as they can be to stable, if none of those please you compile your own if it's not that hard. Third, what about Sense? Do you want it or need it, could use some maybe? Finally, IMO the Destroyer V2 is solid, with a lot of options, but requires reading the first post to flash properly.
Im surprised anyone is replying to this arrogant jacka**

CM7 nightly 36 will have everything working, other than the slight chance you will not be able to get the gps working with the sense fix.
Or try RC8 of the ROM linked in the yet another AOSP Ginger ROM thread in the dev section.
Or if you want something better, learn how to make it yourself (Forum or ROM).

You're right. It's next to impossible, specially if you're new to the forums, to find out certain details about a ROM. The wiki page for the ROMs and kernels are so outdated and rarely, if ever, mention what doesn't work on that ROM/Kernel. Doing searches yield pretty much every thread since most keywords and tags apply to all of them, understandably so. The issue can be remedied by keeping the wiki section up to date.
I don't understand why everyone is so defensive. He's not attacking you, just stating a fact. Don't get me wrong, I am absolutely grateful for any forums such as this. Bringing an issue into the light should be welcome and not garner so much hostility.
Anyway... that's just MY opinion.

Was it too much to ask of the OP to simply ask his question? The roms, mods, kernels and themes are FREE for us to use and these forums provide us with a place where we can FREELY enjoy the dedicated work of the devs and improve our overall smartphone user experience. So what, if we have to do a little bit of searching to find what we seek. Do we not search for items at a grocery store or at a retail clothing store? Do many of us not use search engines to find what we seek? The point is this: Instead of taking frustrations out on the people who control/moderate these forums, simply ask the question and let those who are willing to help answer it. If that is too much of a strain then feel free to start a forum of your own and arrange it however you see fit.
As for your comment about garnering hostility, lets review:

I am getting a bit tired of the browser in the stock 2.2, my batterylife is almost non-existing, and I always have less than 10 mb space left of internal memory.
If I had the money, and galaxy nexus wasn't so ugly I would have changed my phone a long time ago.
So instead I am trying to figure out which Rom is the best for my carrier-free Desire.
I like HTC-sense, (yeah I know it's a battery hog), I won't give up essentials like GPS and camera, and if it could have the possibility of http proxy over WiFi, then I could use the WiFi at my school.
Of cause it has to run smoothly, so newer android versions might not be suitable.
Any suggestions to what might fit my needs?
[English is not my strong suit, so bare with me]
Have u rooted your phone and get S-off'd? If yes then follow me.
If u want to try out a Sense 3.0 ROM, choose Aurora v6.0. Its super fast and much more battery efficient with the included kernel.
If u want sense 3.5 ROM, try Runnymede AIO v6.5. Its also nice and fast. Also the rcmix tweaks do some nice treaks.
If u want something exceptional (with a sense experience and a bit of ICS taste), try Cool Ice Cream Sense. Its also super fast and a great ROM for day to day use.
These are all sense ROMs. If u prefer AOSP one's, the scenario will change drastically.
*sigh* Best brain for human?
I personally think that RSK has the best desire ROM. Its based on runnymede, but when I used runny mede I found it to be quite laggy. Granted I havent tried many ROMs but most people on the RSK thread who claim to have done so pretty much swear by this ROM.

Cool Ice is the fastest sense rom for the desire. And IMHO the best one.

This one qualifies too. Though it is in domain of abstract thinking for most of the community here. To comprehend that one has to observe that the best and the smoothest is the one they are using at the time of posting, and none other.

I would agree with this list also. Not sure about Aurora V6 - was not as good as cools version or 007 but that's my opinion. For a 2.1+3.0 I would try Alex-V's ROM. Only trial and error will you know what is right for you.

Erklat and others who just hate threads like this and yet come to contribute to them in a non-helpful manner:
Why don't you just ignore these threads if you hate them so much????
Personally, if I just started with flashing on my Desire, I would LOVE to see what users who have tried most of the roms, think which rom is the best.
I am one of the long time "flashers" and it took a loooong time to come to a rom that feels just great.
Why would everybody have to go through all this?
My thoughts:
1) AOSP roms IMHO plain suck. You will NEVER be able to customize them the way HTC does it with sense, so why even bother? The ones who still want to bother will not ask such questions here. Yes they could be a bit faster but that's because these roms have nothing. You have to install everything and then your phone looks just like windows mobile 6. Every single thing looks and feels different...
2) Sense 3.x roms have weak multitasking and become laggy when you actually use the phone. Yes, at first one thinks they are fast, because sliding home screens and other rosy stuff seems fast. But then you try to sync with dropbox or something and someone calls you and it takes 10 seconds or more to answer the phone etc etc....
3) For our Desire Sense 1.9 roms are currently the best. But even with those, you have to choose which ones are the fastest/most stable.
After a looong time of trying various roms, my opinion is that Cool Ice is the cream of the Desire roms (the other two roms in my signature are a very close second place) It's VERY fast, it's as stable as it gets and it feels responsive even after 2 weeks of installing apps and power use.
Of course this it my personal opinion, but it's a valuable one. I get a LOT of private messages where people are thanking me for advice and are very happy.
So what exactly IS your problem with those kind of threads??? And why on earth do you keep posting in them???
On my Desire i've loaded ICS BCM 2.0U1
It works great ans smoothly
I've flitted between cyanogenmod 7, oxygen and playing with ics beta (0.4.1.5). Best bet is to try them and see which suits.
I was using oxygen because it doesn't have things I don't need. Trying ics beta because I like it, when it doesn't keep rebooting, which it hasn't for a day

I don't agree.
One thing is if you want to experiment and toy with all the roms. The other thing is if you want to actually use your phone and need stability and responsiveness that is at least as good as the stock rom, which you came from.
If you want the latter, there are only a few roms available that suit the criteria (responsiveness + stability). And this is not a "personal" opinion, it's an objective one. I try to point such roms out.
If you think some other rom is better, do tell. I will nandroid my current rom and give it a spin (and probably go back to my current one in mere 30 minutes of "testing").

If you like to experiment and live with a possibly buggy rom most of the time, then yes.
If you just do not want to waste time experimenting, then no.
And the poster of this question falls definitely into the latter category. So I try to help them.
I think I've said it all, so for me, this debate is over.

When you read my previous post with understanding, then you'll maybe catch a grasp of it. I post merely out of phun lately. I don't entertain myself with trying to spoon feed idiots a few times a day to gain a few cheap thanks. Am I aware that this place degraded to the end of the universe and further in the last year? Yes I am and I don't hope to change that as long as number of loonies who opened 120 threads grow. But that won't stop me to have fun while I'm at it.
EDIT: Very interesting.

ICE CREAM SANDWICH!!
Before you consider it though, READ this. Read it closely.
The goal of this thread isn't to be dramatic at all. There was no big issue...this topic didn't really have to be posted.
But the idea is to purely be helpful. Not everybody who surfs these forums knows everything that's going on and its nice to have all the information in one place. I hope this information helps you determine whether or not the ICS leak is good for you.
There are common issues among all ICS-leak based ROMs. I hope this helps a lot of you since I've seen the same questions in a lot of ROM threads, over and over.
Mods if you can sticky, +1!
#0: A LITTLE BACKGROUND
================================================
When I say "ICS-leak based ROMs", I am saying that the current state of ICS roms on the T989 is that they are based on the ICS leak for our AT&T cousin, the Skyrocket. Thus there are still issues.
That being said...flash Skyrocket roms at your own risk.
Common issues in ALL leak-based roms:
(* Does not neccesarily apply to Raver's AOSP build, it is FUNDAMENTALLY different so read his topic and follow his posts *)
Call echo for about 50-75% of us. A temporary solution is to play around with your case(if you have one on your phone) OR turn off Noise Reduction while in a call
There is no Wi-Fi calling
Shutdown doesn't work for some people. THIS IS WHY YOU MUST SUPERWIPE!! (See #3)
Some video streaming problems
Some video recording problems (depends on ROM)
Some AT&T specific modifications that can give you problems. I.E. there is no 2G/4G toggle switch
Point is: THEY'RE NOT PERFECT YET
#1!
================================================
BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING
If you don't know what ClockworkMod is and how to access the Recovery menu,
STOP here. Look around, read some tutorials, and immerse yourself in some basic Android knowledge.
This can mean the difference between frying a $250+ device and running a cool ROM on it. Do what you do wisely.
Keep your battery charged and make backups.
#2!
================================================
MAKE A NANDROID BACKUP
This is the same as using the Backup and Restore menu in CWM. You have been warned. The devs aren't responsible for lost data.
#3!
================================================
BEFORE FLASHING ICS ROMS
Super super important:
Run this script via CWM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1477955
THIS WILL WIPE YOUR PHONE...and align the partitions properly for ICS
Run it again. Do it twice to be safe!
Then flash your ROM.
#4!
================================================
PATCH YOUR ACCELEROMETER
Without this, your phone will not AutoRotate, games and many media apps will give you headaches, and your CAMERA WILL BE BROKEN.
Most of the ROMs here should have this patch built in. If you're a dev and haven't added it in yet, please do so !!
See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592170

WHEN LOOKING AT THE DEVELPMENT TOPIC
Use the topic search function before you post a question.
I'm not a topic police officer. I don't really care what people post in my own topics as long as its not bickering. But asking questions when they've already been asked does take up space and makes the topic harder to sift through so please be courteous to the devs Do yourself and all of us a favor. Look through it first! This is a cycle...if people look through the topics before posting, their question will be most likely answered and then they will not need to post. The topic gets less cluttered and the next person who has a question has less pages to look through
And different OP's have different requests for their topics. Please be courteous.
THIS IS NOT A COMPETITION
I can stand with Raver in saying this. As a matter of fact, I plan on collaborating with him.
The point is:
XDA isn't about competition. It's about innovation. So please don't say X ROM is better than Y ROM, everyone has their own taste.
TO REPORT BUGS
Follow the instructions in the ROM dev's OP.
I'm actually going to make a Mantis bug tracker for our ICS ROMs. Devs and themers, let me know if you're interested via PM.
GOING BACK TO GINGERBREAD?
Although the ICS roms are fairly stable at this point, some of you may wish to go back to Gingerbread for whatever reason. Before flashing back to GB: REPEAT STEP 3 ABOVE, DO THE SUPERWIPE!
must read if your new to ics
This should be sticky or like placed in the top 5 spots or something where people are sure to read it.
Oh ya if you missed it
DARKSIDE WIPE MULTIPLE TIMES!!!

Here's my take on this. What's the first thing someone is going to be looking for when going to their phones section on xda? "Development" right? Now thnknof how many people, more specifically those with the xda app, go to "stickies" for information first?. My guess is not the majority. This thread is also clearly labeled as to what it is and is formatted so anyone can relate and understand. Therefore while I see that you think its the same I vouch it stays. Until we get our own version of ics we and the more bugs are fixed or found, this sticky would prove useful. It also keeps random questions or repeat questions out of from threads.

I think it's great right here. Especially for those who are new, don't know how to search, are mentally slow on finding stuff. It's right here in your face when you walk into the Dev section. Don't close this. Just because some people know enough, doesn't mean others do. I know, but there's still a lot of people who don't.

The post was appreciated, not for me but I know for some who are new as replied above. Many forget that there are people out there that are not as perfect as they are. Remember, you once were as newb as those who are (new) here. Treat others as you would wanted to be treated.
Although ICS is nice and I have had great results it's just so early in dev stages I must go back to the darkside.

Yes, you can flash Skyrocket roms. I have flashed several of the ICS leak roms, and have not lost data connection. I just wipe and flash. No issues for me.. other than having to de-att it.
If you loose data then try a superwipe?

I think alot of the issues people have which are common across many ICS leak based roms but that only a percent of users get are purely due to the way the rom was flashed. Clearly you dont need to do all the wipes but if you dont and you get one of these bad rom flashing bugs then dont complain to the dev.

Hi all
I am not a big active poster here but love to run different toms on my phone...
I came here from the EVO forums after a switch the the E4GT.
It seems like every time I pick a ROM it goes dead right after I flash it.
Started on Blazer...No activity for months
Moved to AOKP and a couple of days later the thread implodes and is completely gone.
Yesterday I installed paranoidandroid and that thread gets closed.
Why is everyone ditching their roms? or removing the threads when they still contain critical information that is useful?
Thanks
I dont think anyone is ditching their roms. Sometimes they just wait for something better like the ICS OTA or for source. But you have to remember that the devs have a life outside of deving. Maybe their are facing personal issues that doesnt give them time to update their roms.

There are a lot of good, active ROMs out there. Spend time in the Dev section and read through the comments, you'll be able to pick up what's still active very easily.
Things will also pick up when ICS ota comes and source drops.

please dont misunderstand me....I fully respect the Devs have a life...I was mainly talking about Threads dissapearing or being locked. If I dev needs time that is fine as you still have the thread to ask questions or reseach issues. Once the thread goes away or is closed you are limited in your options.
Sorry if I was misunderstood...
If I deleted a thread it was because it needed to be deleted, for reasons that may not be known to the common member. There's a lot that goes on behind the scene, its not just cut and dry.

Blazer has only gotten so far since ICS started leaking, I mean your coming in pretty late in the phones life. I always liked Calk's rom but since CM9 got so far so quick I am sticking with that for the life of the phone. AOKP will pick up eventually.
i think paraniod android just moved locations but is still active.

I too am coming from the EVO and EVO 3D and the type of dev support and activity you are used to for those two phones just isnt the same as for the epic. We have great devs in here it just seems like they arent as active as they are for the EVO series of devices I also dont think you have near as many ROMs to choose from either.

I would say you haven't spent near enough time in the Dev section if you don't think our level of support is on par with other phones.
Also, to the comment regarding number of ROMs, you're talking about a phone that is over two years old (EVO) and a phone that is barely 10 months old. Yes I know the EVO 3D isn't much older but it already had a base to build on coming from the OG EVO.
Besides, we're a community that believes in quality over quantity.

Now that^^^^ answer to one above ^^^ was right on point. You are not a true android enthusiasts if you cant see the difference between these roms. Honestly I go into the Evo forum since I was a big part of that forum for a year and all I see is the same rom split in 12 different pieces. In this forum there happens to be some pretty great developers and all working on different stuff. The roms you happened to pick were by the same guy. So if his life has sent him in a different direction and he can not keep putting out quality work then either you pick it up for him or choose a different rom.
Sorry man not trying to be harsh but I just dont believe in the nice guy crap. It is what it is. Loved the Evo but in the beginning over there it was the same as it was over here. Not sure if you remember but there were like 2 roms out for a while and the steps to root were crazy(like 40 steps). My friend jump on CM9 lay back and enjoy the ride or hey you can always go back to an Evo3d
i didnt come from any other phone except the intercept(crap). and i think that CM9 has the most activity of the roms, only bcuz there are soo many phones that have been ported. and Esoteric68 is right the EVO has had way more time to come out with roms. and our phone is still fairly new compared to the EVO series. but you gotta make do with what you have, once source comes out for ICS for our phone, we'll have more roms and more things going on.

Yes its because so many users think they are the chosen 1. I mean xda is a hell of a place if you know how to use it. I have learned to do so much just by searching these threads with any issue I have. I have themed my own stuff made changes to the system files and basically tweaked the hell out of my phone just by searching the web. My attitude is I am damn sure not the first person to ask whatever question I have to ask and knowledge is the key(hmm heard that somewhere)
With people demanding stuff and claiming stuff is broken when they are the only ones with the issue and then addressing it rudely in a thread does not make a developer WANT to do anything for you. I could go on for a while on the BS I have seen.
We need to take what these developers have given us and be grateful as well as learn how to fix some of this stuff ourselves. If you can not help yourself then either ask nicely or #gositdownsomewhere

On another note, I am really hoping ppl start to calm down in the development forums. I have never witnessed anything like this on XDA before. I'm coming from an Optimus V. Development on that phone is FANTASTIC, but I have terrible service in my hometown, and let's face it: this phone is 29395x better.
I've never really used xda much, because androidcentral is good for the OV. I checked out the ac forum for the s3, and it's awful in comparison. So I thought...I'd better get over to xda
I have a few very random questions...
I hope it's okay that I post them here...
1. What are flamers and trolls?? lol.
2. I saw a video on how to easily root the Att Galaxy S3. Seemed simple enough. However, what is this talk of 'tripping a flash counter'?? is it okay to trip the flash counter, and can I reset that later if I wanna go back to stock??
3. I guess cwm is probably the best(favorited) recovery to use??
Thanks to anyone who can answer my questions

1. people who are rude and ignorant.
2. Use the no trip root method and everything should be fine. Tripping a flash counter is a way for att/samsung to know that you messed with your phone, it can be a problem for warranty returns, but there is an app called triangle away that should reset this. I havent tried it so I personaly cannot confirm.
3. there was a little bit of argument on which recovery was better when there was the missing imei problem, now that it is solved it doesn't really matter (all personal preference). But please don't forget to do a NV backup or at least a backup of your Imei no.
and by the way welcome to xda it is a great place for information and if you do searches first and post in the propper section the people here are great.

One thing that depressed me, in which was easily resolved, was the ringtones, notifications and alarms. They honestly suck, you could at least give me one business class ringtone (a classic phone maybe). So anyways a quick search of the android market and I am overly satisfied again.

Perfect place to post, good to see someone else joining myself and Archangel in this chat thread. Here are my answers to your questions:
1. Troll - Someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.
Flaming - Hostile and insulting interaction between Internet users, often involving the use of profanity.
2. If you trip the flash counter and take your phone in for warranty work, Samsung will know you have flashed unsigned firmware on your phone and may deny your warranty claim. There is a working method in place to reset your trip counter back to zero but it costs a few bucks. If you root and install a custom recovery (cwm or twrp) using this method, then flash all roms using that recovery, you will not trip the counter.
3. This is up for debate, so here are the facts. CWM is the recommended recovery for most custom roms and many developers will not provide support if you flash using another recovery. On the other side of the coin, a number of people have lost their imei flashing roms (phone cannot connect to cellular network), and a theory exists that cwm may be the culprit as no one using any other recovery has experienced this loss. I personally use twrp, a touch based recovery alternative to cwm, works well and gives me comfort on the imei issue.
One more item: If you are planning to flash custom roms, make sure to backup your imei using this method. Restoring these backups has been proven to fix the issue.

2. Ohhhh. Well I'm hoping I'll never have to take it in for warranty work, but that's a nice fix!
3. I see. and twrp has no downsides, other than not being officially supported? Does it still flash any rom?? How is the compatibility of backups between the two recoveries?
On the V, I switched firmwares quite a bit with the Optimus S, so I know the importance of knowing all my cell info(nv backup, spc(msl), aaa key, ha key, etc.) Thanks so much for the link on how to backup all of this stuff, I'm sure it's different than the V haha.

No, backups are incompatible between twrp and cwm. I have done all of my flashing with twrp, problem free.

Am I the the only person in semi hate with the screen i mean Engadget said pen-tile is something you wouldn't notice because of the high res but i still see it as clear as day and the whites on this phone are pretty bad. But im still going to get it over the one x even though i love sense and htc are the only droids i had i wanna try something new.

You can only really see the pentile pattern if you actively look for it. It was far worse on my old Captivate because the resolution was much lower; on the S3... i haven't noticed it casually, but if I get up real close and examine the diff between red/green/blue diagonal lines, I can still see the crosshatch diff in red and blue (green is solid).
Much ado over nothing. Samsung said they returned to pentile for the S3 (vs nonpentile in the S2) because the screen lasts longer. I'm fine with that.
EDIT: And because this is OFF-TOPIC, let me just add........ Marklar marklar marklar?! Marklar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that stuff is crazy!!! Those guys are all SO smart. wonder if any of them hang out on the forums.
Where do you guys get authoritative information about Android flashing/modding/development? Like, where does a developer go?
I've read about 10 explanations of deodexing and, while I totally get the "concept," I have lots of little questions questions (are new apps also de-odexed? how can only the first boot slow? someone said they d/l'd regular files and de-odexed himself?!). All the guides explain it simplistically. Where can I find the nitty-gritty and technical explanations of these things? Some super-guide? I don't mind reading 100 pages, as long as it's thorough and authoritative.
I used to mod Sony Ericssons and, while a little difficult, there was one flashing tool, maybe 5 skins for your media player, three or four I-know-what-I'm-doing developers, and we "rooted" using a brute-force method that took sometimes 15 hours. And there was no nitty gritty, really, because, if you could edit an XML file, you were close to the end of our knowledge, haha.

Today the forums that I mark as read go back to unread. Anyone else seeing this? I also noticed that the Accessories forum under all variants always appears as read while it still has unread threads, but I assume this is because it's shared forum for all the variants... right?
