apk mail of Samsung Tab - Gen8, Gen9, Gen10 Themes and Apps

is it possible to install the apk mail of samsung tab the Archos 10.1 or 7.0
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838078

As per the "other forums", it isnt possible since it directly replaces the existing mail, hence needing a perm root.

This would be sweet.

too bad :-(

Surely someone could recompile the app with a different name exactly as they did with the recent gingerbread apk which can be installed without root.
Any takers?!

with the root perhaps ?

I tried replacing my email.apk with the samsung one(i have rooted sde), and all it does is force close as soon as I try to launch it. Must need some samsung libraries or something.

That is too bad.
I feel that the onlyu missing good app on the A101 is in fact the email client.
I would love o use the tablet for work, but the stock email client is very bad, and all the others i have tried are also very bad for a daily use. The app that best fits in the Touchdown email client, but it is so badly designed.
I would love to have one email client with full features of exchange, that would feel as clean as the samsung email client or even the iPad email client.
If someone finds one like this, please let me know ...

Have managed to get this working on my Archos 101IT, running sauron's Urukdroid 4.1 root. I followed the instructions given by LOstSOul over at the ArchosFans forum:
If you want to give it a try you must move the existing /system/app/Email.apk to /system/app.old (or delete it)
Then download this zip file:
http://downloads.streakdroid.com/djsteve/tabmail.zip
Note: I did not build this at all and take no credit for building it. I found this package here:
http://android.modaco.com/content/dell- ... nt-beta-2/
you must extract the zip file on your PC and then copy the 3 files in the extracted system\app directory into your \system\app directory on your archos vi ADB with Root or get it on the SD card and then move it using a terminal program. Once you have the three files in the /system/app directory just reboot and you will have the new email client.
It will use any existing email accounts that you have from the old email app but they may have some strange issues. If you notice anything weird remove the account and re-add it.

Didn't see this posted here on XDA yet, so apologies if it has been already.
As stated above, these instructions originated elsewhere, and I am in no way taking any credit for this.
However, as you can see from the screenshot attached, doesn't quite work as well on the 101 - app was coded for 7" screen after all!

Another good reason to root the device... gonna spend this weekend on this. Thks for the news

What does this change do?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17337557&postcount=563
I installed it yesterday, but could not login nor create a blur account. This will solve the problem? Just change it and save? Do i have to reboot?
Thanks a lot! If i can't login in the motoblur, i think i gonna try CM7 RC1.5. Stock rom with no Blur functions have nothing to offer to me.
Update:
Changed, rebooted and still the same issue. Blur ask me to try again latter...
I'm using ms2ginger 1.0, installed yesterday night. The host entry in build.prop let's me login, I can access Twitter/Facebook in universal Messages app and set social status. I can't browse updates from friends etc though. Is this related?
[edit]
Social Networking retrieved some updates from Facebook then stopped, weird.

Ms2ginger is rom based on leaked china Milestone 2 rom build (4.5.3 - 63)
This tip is rom Based on Leaked ginger 4.5.1-134 (MB526)
sorry, i don`t speak English well
Ok, it seems to be problem with ms2ginger. I'm using 4.5.1.-134 now and your changes didn't work. I copied same entries from ms2ginger build.prop and it works now. Had to create new account though.
thx, will try it out, some guys in germany reported, that they got blur-message on mb525 flashed to 526 that their blur-account will be deactivated because of using unofficial rom
Update: with said build.prop, Facebook works and Twitter doesn't (Twitter account error, sometimes it doesn't throw errors but doesn't update anyway). Didn't test other social networks.
editing build.props
I'm trying to patch up my build.props and have got as far as connecting to my phone via adb. However I keep getting permission denied. I seem unable to 'su' to change the permissions on the file or remount.
Is there a simple guide to editing this file? I've tried searching the forums, but nothing jumps out at me.
Thanks
Terminal Emulator
I managed to figure it out by using Terminal Emulator available for free from the market place.
1. Edited the file on my pc and then copied it onto the sdcard on the phone.
2. Used terminal emulator to remount the file system as writeable and backed up / copied over the build.prop.
Afterwards I remounted as readonly and rebooted, managed to get a motoblur account and facebook appears to be syncing.

If I make the changes in build.prop for these values, I'll be able to create a new motoBLUR account, and all the data sync would work again? I lost my motoBLUR account after receiving a system notice that I was using an unreleased ROM.

With the above build.prop my Facebook contacts sync doesn't work. Posts sync seems to be working though.
Hey Guys!
Using 2.3.4-134, I edited my buildprop file as mentioned above and everything was working fine until my Motoblur news widget stopped syncing 4 days ago... My guess is that Motorola found out that I was using a non-official rom, even with an edited buildprop...
Now there is an official rom (not leaked) for the Defy+, would it be possible to use its official buildprop data to make sure that Motoblur will work?
Thanks for your assistance!

[Solved] Any way to access an apk file immediately after flashing?

I'm not sure if this is possible as ICS has no built in file manager, but is there anywhere I can put an apk file that it would be accessible without one? Specifically I want to be able to open an apk to install a file manager as the first thing I do after flashing a rom, to avoid needing to go through the market.
I thought maybe I could leave it in sdcard/download but it seems like the downloads program is blind to anything in that folder that wasn't officially "downloaded". (I suppose I could upload one to my dropbox and download it via the browser, if there are no viable options). Also made a few stabs at getting the gallery program to show one but it seems to filter out anything that's not a picture or video.
Any ideas for places to stick an apk and get one of the stock programs to let me open it?
maybe email it to yourself?
but you would have to log into the email app to do that
but there isnt really anyway to access the file without a file explorer
Open your favourite rom zip, add your apk to /system/app, save the zip, push that zip to the phone, flash.

Yeah in general I'm trying to cut out the step of signing into anything and just restoring my apps from a backup before I need to cancel automatic restore functions (which I do want on and running once I do my own initial run of things).

I'm guessing this comes with the consequence of raising any apk added in this manner to system app level? Not that I distrust the apps I'd have in mind for this to do anything malicious themselves, but is there any danger of opening security holes by elevating apps not designed to be system apps?
What I've done many times is just enabling Air Plane as soon as I can after flashing a ROM. That's way I can install any apk I want.
Hope it helps.

Hmm but then what is your method for getting to that apk? If you do it over wifi that seems to defeat the point, no?
Personally I've found that it works just fine to uncheck the boxes for recovery syncing during the setup process, and then just re-enabling them later in settings. (Alternately, not signing into my google account at all until I've performed a backup). That way even if I end up signing into the market to download a recovery app, it doesn't automatically try to re-download everything else on its own.
I'm starting to think that my dropbox solution will be the cleanest, as it'll be a simple step of opening the browser and downloading a single apk every time at the same link.
I bet that the inclusion of a basic file explorer will be one of those headline items in a future android release. A nice basic functionality that the bloggers can rehash to death before anything actually hits.
Download the file manager apk over wifi and install the APK via download manager.
I do it all the time with Chinese android tablets with no market access.
Or Bluetooth it from another device.
Or just use the market

Transfer by USB from my laptop.
Is there a way to do that in which the device will launch the apk you move over? When I copy files over usb, it only ever puts them into whatever directory, and I need a file explorer to interact with them on the phone. And then I'm back to square one, as far as this particular task is concerned (once things are up and running I just use the LAN option in ES file explorer and it's as convenient as could be).
you have the apk in your computer right?
connect the phone to pc, and use adb to install
'adb install <apk_file_name.apk>'
Ah. I haven't used adb since I first unlocked/rooted a few months ago. Guess it probably pays to be a little familiar with those tools; they don't even occur to me when problem solving these days.

mark thread as solved then, if that solved it
Well a completely in-phone solution would still be nice, but I guess if there were any of those they'd have come up by now.
I'll probably use abd if I'm actively working at my computer and a dropbox download otherwise.

[Q] Mail apk with HTML

Hi all, I use RCMixS v2.0 and I really love this rom.
For now I have only a problem: the e-mail application doesn't display html emails corretly... it shows only the text.
I have looked also into the settings but there is no voice about that.
Can anyone give me a modified version of that Sense apk in order to see correctly html emails? (always if there is one apk that does that, obviously)
Thank you in advance,
Sbarabau
p.s: please don't tell me to change rom, because the RCMixS is perfect for me.
EDIT: i forgot: my email account is an hotmail synchronized through exchange activesync
No one can help me?

Why don't you use another email client? Have you tried to increase the mail size limit?

I dont' want to change email client because I fell good with the Sense interface.
I've already tried to increase the email's size limit, but no change... The option for select the HTML format is grey and unclickable.
I've also tried with this guide ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342174 ), but when I turn back the value to 2.5, it all return as it was initially...
P.s: sorry for my bad english

Now I'm using a CM7 ROM so have no chance to try it but here is what I found:
- Make sure you have not selected "download text" only under the sync settings.
- Select HTML format on your email server. I think hotmail have this kind of setting.
Somewhere I read you have to select an individual account for setting HTML format.

Same problem here ! Any help ?
I found the solution to this probleme !!!
You need Root and Root Explorer
I downloaded the mail.apk from one ROM (my memory is bad i don't remember) and I copied that mail.apk in \system\app and tried to install it from there. It started the installation but aborted cause I suppose the mail app is in use.
The trick is that after that aborted installation, the option to select Html or Text is now available and I could change it to Html...
Now everything is ok.
Is that the HTC Sense Mail.apk?
And the older Mail.apk? Have you replaced it in /system/app?
First, the mail.apk is not related to Sense but to the Android version, mine is 2.3.4
And Second, I replaced that one in \system\app
I tried to install it from there but it didn't work. In fact, it enabled the option HTML/TEXT !!!
I have RCMixS with Android 2.3.3
Anyway, that's a system apk, so you have to put into the system/app folder using adb
Third: if you replace the older Mail.apk in system/app, the older e-mail application obviously disappears.
P.S: with your method I lose my email app and the new one doesn't install. With adb, the app goes in crash when I open it.
I'm sorry to hear that you lost your older mail.apk.
As stated in my previous reply, You need Root Explorer and when you replace mail.apk, and try to install it from system\app it doesn't install but the option HTML is available right after.
And I told that it's related to 2.3.4 !!! and you have 2.3.3 so I am not sure if it will work with a different version (now i'm a bit sure)...
You should not use adb. And you have to find out a mail.apk from a 2.3.3 version to restore your email application.
Good luck.

I know I would have lost my email application, so I made a backup of the app.
Anyway, your argument does not stand: if I put a new Mail.apk in system/app and I replace the older, I will obviously lose my older email app!
P.S.: it isn't related to 2.3.4. What Sense version do you have?
P.S.2: for system apps you have to use adb. If you don't use it, the app will never install...
The solution for me is that I replaced mine by another mail.apk from another rom (without adb) and the html option was back and fixed.
I don't have time to polemicate about it.

I asked you: What Sense version do you have?
Hello,
I just upgraded from Android Revolution 3.6.8 to 3.6.13 without wiping my stuff.
The problem of HTML mails from ActiveSync with my hotmail went back to TXT and the option is grayed.
So, I just copied the mail.apk (attached to my previous post) to system\app with ES explorer on phone (overwriting the one existing there) and tried to install the apk from system\app and yes it doesn't complete the installation but the icon disappeared from menu and main screen. So, I rebooted my phone. After that my email icon came back and when I go to option, I can now select HTML or TEXT.
My Sense is 3.0, Android 2.3.4 and Android Revolution 3.6.13 with 1.72Ghz CPU.
My method is working and I confirm I did it twice !

Sense 3.0 is different than Sense 2.1. For this reason the apk email didn't worked for me. It would be perfect to find a ported version for Sense 2.1 of that apk

Download & Install The Unreleased Gmail 4.2 APK With Pinch-To-Zoom And More

You will find here the new Unreleased Gmail 4.2.apk - Thanks to Android Police for this news - AND ON PLAY STORE TOO - UPDATED 01 DEC 2012
The Gmail 4.2 APK is signed by Google, but with a different key than the one in the Play Store (we checked the signatures - they differ). One is probably the test key and the other the production key. For this reason, you can't simply install it as an update and therefore need to be rooted with the ability to mount the /system directory for writing in order to remove the existing Gmail APK.
Important: Once Google updates Gmail in the Play Store, you will want to revert this process or at the very least delete the Gmail 4.2 APK you installed here if you want to update it from the Play Store.
OK, let's get down to it. You'll probably need ADB installed on your computer (here's an easy way that doesn't require downloading the Android SDK). There is a chance that this might work without ADB by just removing the APKs mentioned below and installing the new one, but it didn't seem to work reliably for everyone. This should, though:
- Download Gmail 4.2 from the download link above.
- Rename it to Gmail2.apk (already renamed )
- Make a Nandroid backup in case something goes wrong (this is always a good thing to do before messing with your device).
- Remount /system for writing (via your favorite root-aware file explorer).
- Delete (or move if you want to save the APKs) all other versions of Gmail.
- Update: We've seen multiple successful reports of simply uninstalling Gmail using Titanium Backup or ROM Toolbox instead of performing this and the next step. If that works for you, go directly to step 7. If not, proceed below.
- Usually there are 2 or 3 copies. One will be in /system/app (that's the original Gmail that was pre-installed on the device) and there may be a few in /data/app (these are the updates installed from the Play Store). They'll be called "Gmail.apk," or "com.google.android.gm-[number].apk," An easy way to tell is to look for the Gmail icon.
- You may need to delete the .odex files matching the APKs in step 5 too, if you have them. Neither I nor Artem had to do this, but there are many different ROMs out there, and we're trying to cover all bases. Ignore this step and only come back to it if something doesn't work later.
- Reboot. Once you do, you should have no Gmail as far as Android is concerned.
- You can try to install the Gmail 4.2 APK you downloaded at this point by tapping it in your favorite file explorer (move the APK to your device first, of course). If that doesn't work, or if you prefer ADB, fire up a command line and type adb install Gmail2.apk.
If you get an error message, you probably didn't delete all copies of Gmail. If you don't feel like playing with ADB for Step 8, I've also gotten it to work by just copying the APK to /data/app, but that's not as fool proof as "ADB install".

Jelly Bean AOSP Email

Thanks to shiftr182 for sharing the flashable file. I followed his instruction and was able to get AOSP email back on my TW rom.
** I'm only distributing the work that has been done by others **
1. Use a file manager and delete SecEmail.apk and SecExchange.apk from your system [System >> App]
(I use Titanium Backup and made a copy of those two files)
2. Flash the attachment. (I made a nandroid backup just in case)
3. After you reboot, go to you apk manager and clear the data on email and exchange then add your account(s).

Sorry for bumping an old thread but I had got the email to work using another method from another thread (install app in system>app with root explorer, I also found another way to do it on another thread that I found before I found this one .... after all was done my email unread number said 22 all the time and never changed. I tried everything and nothing fix it.
Found another thread, started fresh, (renamed original email/exchange apts with .bak instead of deleting it) same problem here.... unread count but this time is says 19. Mind you it shows 19 unread emails on the email app icon in the app drawer and when I drag it to the home screen and I did not even set up my emails yet so it would have no way of knowing how many unread emails I have. very odd.
Finally started fresh and flash the zip from this thread which worked now it says 33 unread emails all the time. Can't figure out why this unread email count shows up even without any unread emails.
Anyone have any idea how to fix this?
Thanks.
Works Great on 4.4.3
Awesome! I've been unable to get corporate email to sync since I got off of a stock ICS ROM. I was still having problems with the latest 4.4.3 ROMs. This solved it. Thanks!
