[Q] Custom ROM, Advice? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello All again!
I have been rooted for months now, via unrEVOked.
I have done a Nandroid Backup already, and saved everything already!
I want a custom ROM as I have read these have much better battery and such
I am looking for a ROM that has 4G and HDMI out, no HTC Sense needed unless i have to
I was looking into Fresh and Virus, Still have no idea which one to do
Advice?
Kyle

I have never used a Virus rom so I can not help you with that one. But can tell you that I have run fresh several times both on my hero and my evo and have not had any problems that one. I am currently running myn's warm twopointtwo and it is also running great.

Like the other hundred "What rom should I use" posts
Try them out and find the one you like the best.

Thanks! Ill test it out, does it have 4G support?

Hey guys im contemplating flashing Cyanogen onto my phone, seems like there are alot of issues with it.. If you have it installed was it worth it or no.. and if not what do you think of the EVio Rom?

Best is Baked Snacks or DamageControl
Me personally, I've been stuck like glue on cyans latest offerings and just today I ran calkins new rom and I loved it.
Still a DC fan but I got enough love in me for all my ladies.
It's really a matter of preference. I was running Fresh at 0.5.3, then wanted to try something different so i hopped over to DamageControl. As soon as CyanogenMod was released though i've been running his nightly builds & i love them. Best bet is to take a look through all of them & see what it offers that you might want.
Best ROMs
CM6 hands down. Have not flashed anything else after going Stock froyo. You can really tell Sense does slow down the OS. CM6 is only getting better.

I use the Cyanogen 6 RC and have no reservations. Yes, you have to do these fixes immediately after installing and you lose 4G, HDMI output, and the FM radio, but you gain tremendously in the areas of responsiveness and battery life. If you can tolerate the trade-offs, I recommend it wholeheartedly. I've never used EVio, though. (Oh, what a rhyme show!)
I appreciate it guys, are the fixes a big pain in the butt to flash?

The market fix takes a bit of time, but is a one shot deal and is only about half an hour.
I don't use Facebook so I skipped the other one. However, I can't imagine it being worse than the Market fix.
Wasn't the Market fix just a matter of removing the old apk, clearing the data, & loading the new one? If i remember it was only a few cmd's through adb ( very simple to do ).
Also, there's a post on the General board saying the FaceBook sync is fixed without using the "hacked" version.

I didn't remove the apk. All I did was clear data and force stop. Flashed over the fixed market zip

Are you sure the speedup is related to no-Sense, or is it just FroYo being faster than Eclair? I remember reading somewhere (Engadget?) that Sense slows it down very little, if at all. And FroYo, of course, focused on 5 things, one of them being SPEED.
I'm just not sure that 2.2 w/ Sense would be that much slower than 2.2 w/o Sense. I guess I could try Ava's thing, but I'd rather just wait for DC 3.5...
EViO
just flashed it today and so far I like it over baked snack
cyanogen for life!

[Q] Some Questions!?!?!

Ok first off let me say, im a n00b still but i am constantly on here trying to read and learn more about our phone! i am currently fully rooted running damage control 3.1.2
My first question is Froyo 2.2, currently was is the best and most stable rom running it? that still keeps 4g? ive looked in development but im just curious on your all's opinion about it!
2nd: i see all these threads about updating radios? what is the need for that?
3rd: Would you recommend to just restore to factory with no root and install 2.2? and just wait for a root that way?
Oh boy, be prepared to get flamed for posting this in General. Anyways, I'm currently running Fresh 3.0 and it seems to be 100% functional. I can't test 4G cuz I don't have it where I live, but with pretty much all the resources for Froyo available now, most of the roms are now getting stable releases. Updating your radio can give you better reception and service but I've never seen any significant differences myself. I usually just flash the latest one just to be up to date. Don't install the stock OTA! There is already a stock rooted version out.

people always get mad about something on forums, im just trying to extend my knowledge of things...
Totally understandable, but there are a lot of people here who post nothing but negative crap and a question posted somewhere other than Q&A is like a tractor beam for them. Anyways, hope you find what you need. There are also a lot of people here that just want to help.

defiantly upgrade the radios....absolutely make sure you do plenty of research first on the correct way to flash them. Also in my opinion I wouldn't do the ota update...just flash the stock rooted 2.2 rom.good luck...and remember.....lots of research first before doing anything.

but none the less i appreciate it, can u tell me a benefit to the radios?
4G does work on Fresh 3.1.0. Tested it this morning at work. So far, that thing is VERY stable. Haven't noticed an issue yet.

[Q] back to stock

so i will be honest, i did not do much research and i apologize right away.
however i have rooted my phone and im using arayray's themed rom currently. heres the big question. while i have no desire to ever go back to a tmobile rom on my slide the question remains. can i do that? as everyone knows we are expecting tmobile/htc/google someone, anyone to release 2.2 for the slide and i just want to know about going back.
thanks and please dont flame me too much lol
Short answer: Yes, you can. If you go into the Development forum, under the ROM Bible stickied thread, there are links to at least 2 methods I believe. One to restore a NAND backup of a stock setup, and another by flashing the stock ESPRIMG.
thanks for not beating up on me. is there anything that the new tmobile 2.2 rom will have that we dont already? anything new?

What new T-Mobile 2.2 ROM? till now it's just a rumor and might forever remain a rumor to be honest. haha =P well as it something new.. I'm not so keen to this stuff but if I'm right, we will get the bluetooth drivers we been needing for ages.. wifi and all that, making 2.2 ROM's more stable. I hope I got it right

ya i guess it is all rumors at this point. i havent really noticed any stability issues with arayray's rom so far wifi and bluetooth have been (knocking on wood) flawless.

[Q] Best ROM for a noob?

I am rooting my buddy's EVO this weekend and he isnt the most technically savvy guy ... I have a DINC and i am quite familar with loading ROMS kernels radio's etc on it ... Just curious as to what ROM people would recommend on the EVO for a guy thats not really technically inclined... I current run CM on DINC but i think a Sense based ROM would be better for him because thats what he is used to ... been looking around and noticed Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo seems to be pretty popular.. any other suggestions?
nope, thats about simple as it gets xD i could recommend a cyanogen rom (6 or 7) but no 4g and no sense. myn is a good rom i used it for a while
MikFroyo 4.3 is sweet and fast. Also it is very clean and a sense rom.
Ricism78's Stock Turbo, with Netarchy kernal of choice. Stable and fast. Everything works.
Dont root, keep him stock.
Unless you want to be his phone support from now on.
(I speak from experience)
I would agree on keeping him stock.
If not, the most stable ROM is probably Myn's from my experience :\

Yeah i know but he wants the free wifis! omg lol
Tether is free.
WiFi Tether requires you to be rooted for it to be free? At least thats how it is with the DINC...
Yes wifi tether requires root.

+2, if you do the root you're tech support from now on. Also if the phone gets bricked, guess who is to blame? If your friend wants a rooted phone have him do it himself, doing it manually, so he learns a bit about abd, patience, and fear...
That bring said if your friend likes Sense, I'd recommend Fresh or Warm. For a senseless rom, Vaelpak is really nice.

[Q] In your opinion, what's the easiest rom for newbies?

What do you think is a good entry level rom for a newbie like myself? I'm looking for a stable rom that I don't have to constantly mess with.
Thanks.

Try Fresh or AvaFroyo. To be honest all the roms are pretty basic. They only need messed with if you want to mess with them.

mostly all the roms are very easy to use, i recomend that you try CM7 RC1, i used to like sense but since i flash Cyanogen i never return to sense roms, even leaving on 4G area and now cyanogen almost got 4G fully working, promiss you, you gonna love it
Thanks, sorry for the noob question.
Stability is the main concern.

lol. No it does not. It does what any other way of rooting does, it roots it.
But if you don't like clockwork, dload ra's recovery.
Myn's is a pretty cool and easy to use rom, I use it and love it.
Really, anything labeled DEV you should stay away from.
Everything else is mostly the same. I recommend mikfroyo or Myn.
Stick with kernel #15 . It has the least issues in my experience at least

Unrevoked roots your phone just like any other way, except faster and less hassle. The only real difference is if you need to flash a splash screen.
How do I do a full wipe like they advise?
Might be best to ask these in the Q&A forum and not in Android Development.

defintely agree with CM7.... I was never a fan on AOSP until gingerbread.. but i am having a hard time going back to sense (which i LOVE) cause CM7 is SOOOOO GOOD... but i would flash a savage-zen kernel

If you want a sense ROM, AVA Z3, or MikFroyo, or Myn.... but I dont care much for Kernel 15... i like Net's 4.3.1 WITH SBC
Welcome to the crack... the best thing to remember is BACK UP (NAND) BEfore you flash.. as long as you do this, there is very little you can do to REALLY mess up your phone. Just learn to WIPE, and WIPE SOME MORE..
One last "noob" advice.. Buy titanium back up... it will save you MASS amounts of time if you do it right. Feel free to PM me if you have questions. be more than happy to help!
