do i need to reroot? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, i rooted my htc desire and flashed a ROM on it...now i need to flash another ROM onto my phone. Just need to know, can i directly flash another ROM or do i need to reroot my phone before that?

yes, you will keep root until you use a RUU, so just flash

Ok, so i dont understand..u mean to say i dont need to reroot?

Once you root a phone, you're rooted for life until you decide to unroot.
So, you can change roms without having the need to reroot

Ok everyone...thanks for the info

Froyo root, recovery and Cyanogen

Hi..
The howto for permissions root on froyo, recovery and Cyanogen?
thanks
firstly answer these questions.
1)how old is your handset?
i need to know this becuase i doubt you remember what hboot version it was before you updated to the fro-yo update.
2)you will need to downgrade. using this method regardless.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=750852
once you have flashed PB99IMG.zip and if you get a picture then you dont need to continue with the procedure. if you do not get a picture, you continue with instructions.
once you have done that you will need to root.
root using unrevoked method. www.unrevoked.com.
if you have a SLCD screen the link in 2) will be have full instructions on this.
once you have flashed unrevoked and are in the custom recovery you can flash any zip.
so you can put cyanogen port for desire onto the SD card and flash that in the recovery screen.
thanks.. but I lose the guarantee???

you will lose warranty if you flash anything unofficial to you're phone.
again can you answer the questions above
also what network you are on and things like that. because you may be able to flash OFFICIAL RUU of your network back on after running cyanogen to get back to factory setting

If you wana stay stock, best just flash the rooted stock image which can be found in the dev section.
thanks...figured that would be the best thing, just wanted to ask to be sure
I followed these instructions and was fine. I prefer to keep my own ROM.

[Q] deleted sms recovery on 2.3.5 s-on unrooted

hi,
all i want is only to recover my deleted sms messages.
My cellular is desire hd 2.3.5 unrooted s-off with htc sense 3.0
1. do I need to root it?
2. if I do, am i not loosing the needed data?
3. can an s-on be changed to s-off without flashing new rom? how?
4. since aahk is dead, is there any alternative one step tool?
Thanks folks
oded:
What are you trying to do? Recover SMSs? I don't think rooting will help you do that. You need to have made a backup. Anyway, to root, since you are S-Off, you just need to flash a recovery and then flash either ROM or root from recovery.
wrong info

You don't need S-Off to root. But root won't help you recover your SMSs anyway unless you have a backup.

If you can replace the entire OS with S-On, why do you think you would be unable to unroot the OS?

I don't understand what you intend to do.
Why do you need to "temp unroot"? What do you think that would do?
Maybe he want to run some apps that don't work on rooted phones, like banking, some tv apps...
I used RootCloak earlier on my other phone, don't know if it's still working good...

Right, well, basically there are many ways to detect root. To be sure you'd have to uninstall root, reboot, use the app, reboot recovery reflash root, reboot.
So no "temp unroot".
Maybe you can try this, think it was working for me...

[Q] Unroot S-On HTC One M8

I planned on converting my One M8 to a GPE edition but I couldn't gain S-Off, so now I have a phone with root access and TWPR installed. In preparation for HTCs upcoming Lollipop OTA, I would Like to bring my device back to full stock so I can install the OTA. I can't seem to find a way to do this without having S-Off. Could someone help me please?
Thanks, Nathan

Will that remove my root user permissions too?
And do I need to relock the boot loader to install OTA's?
Thanks!

sakitech didn't mention anything about losing root or relock bootloader requirements to receive OTA updates after following his video.

Oh, sorry for not being clear xD
No, I don't think you will lose root and you don't have to relock bootloader afaik.
Even so.. you can always redo the process of rooting and unlock the bootloader after OTA update.. no biggie
but if you run stock rom and recovery.. it shouldnt affect root or if ure unlocked with OTA updates
I just reverted back to stock last night with s-on. you will have to relock your bootloader (I used a tool kit, but had to boot into the bootloader myself to get the toolkit relock it) and flash a stock RUU (exe or zip). I suggest using an exe to flash if available. I have a sprint HK edition so I used an RUU exe for that model, and all worked perfectly. I was able to install the OTA update they just released with no problem after I was back to stock.
sakitech's method should work too if you want to try and keep root and the bootloader unlocked
