Free internal memory: how much? - Desire General

...and by safe I really mean a logical, usable size for caches etc. In example, a size which wouldn't give me problems when, I'm browsing in "heavy" websites, downloading through marketplace, or receiving messages and emails.
Since I got my desire and flashed the latest LeeDroid ROM, I've started installing apps like there's no tomorrow. Naturally, most of them I just try and discard, but a lot of them I just keep on my phone even if I use them once a week, or even once a month. With A2SD enabled, I currently have a whopping 188 apps installed. I think they will soon classify a psychiatric condition named after me. That leaves me with around 25mb left in Internal storage, and around 20mb remaining in A2SD.
On my Touch Pro, again, with a [censored]load of apps installed, I usually left around 30mb of free memory, just for various caches. Would it be wise to do the same for android, or should I just wait for the "low space" notification to start clearing things out?.
So I'm wondering. How much free storage you guys have on your desire? And how much would you consider it would be wise to leave free. Would a full-featured site use more than, say 10mb of cache? Would we ever need more than 10mb of cache for mail or messages? Any other serious disadvantages of having an -almost full- internal storage space?
(I already got brut mod for google maps, so maps cache ain't a problem)
Sorry for the long post and possibly needless question... insomnia at it's best

Down to 8MB internal free !! (cachemate only freed additional 2MB)

A2SD(+) 1.24 GB free / 1.92GB total
Time to delete apps now
Need a better a2sd(+) or bigger phone !

Yes I think that until the memory leak in the contacts storage is fixed, we Desire users are going to have to get used to doing a hard reset every month or so. Currently have 85mb of phone storage left after a hard reset last week. Before that I was down to 12Mb.

130MB using SuperVillain. I only have around 25 apps though.

Leave 10% or more free. Less than 10% will cause things to start breaking.

memory
hi guys iv got about 110 apps or so and still got 305mb mem on my desire and thats internal memory buy using data2sd very good the only problems i got is my phone crashes and freezes now and again thing its my sd card so is going to try another

I'm using LeeDroid's ROM and am left with about 22MB - how are you lot doing an app count? I know I've got quite few apps installed. It's a shame we have to worry about this. I thought I had saw the end of it when I moved from WM6.X devices!
Apps2ext/data2sd (or variants) seems to be the way forward, but as said, there seem to be stability issues at the moment.
The new Nexus S comes with 16GB nand memory - this is what all android phones should have had from the beginning - bigger internal memory.

WARNING, dont get it wrong.
The new Nexus S indeed has 16GB memory ...
But only 1GB for internal memory where you can use to install app.
It has 13 GB as "emulated SD card".

That's still a lot of apps to be stored in 1GB! If that guy up there fit 200ish apps in around our 140MB of space with A2SD+, then theoretically you could put like nearly 1000 apps on the nexus S!

Ah I see...I take that back then!
How comes Apple can do it with their phones but none that are running Android can?? Is it simply a cost thing?
It's obviously apparent that many Android users are installing apps/games mounting way over 500MB.

Got data2ext and have 1.7GB free. I left some directories on the internal storage and created some links. I have to say it working pretty well. Almost no performance lost. Only noticed performance issue while playing asphalt hd.
But the internal storage of nexus s is a step forward. But still more improvement needed. Once they fix those storage issues we will get greater and bigger apps.

I Figure I could get another 100MB internal free by repackaging
a ROM by removing 99% of the install packages
and installing manually from copies from the FAT32 Sdcard after first boot.
This fresh install would push most of the installed files to the A2SD+ ext3 part of the sdcard.
Seems a waste of space having over 100MB flashed on r/o ROM storage,
taking away from internal:
/data/app/*.apk [9 MB]
/system/app/*.apk [98 MB] {HTC* 30MB }
/system/customize/resource/bootanimation.zip [2 MB]
Anyone tried this approach?
I suspect knowing what to leave to have a minimal system is the trick?
Can I boot with 0 system apps installed ?
I'm thinking "why not" , I can use the command line adb , so I don't think
I even need a gui or fileexplorer app at all ?
Will think about it when the latest LeeDroid has stablised... TBA

65 apps installed, for 55 MB total, and I've got 16MB of free internal storage...
Seriously, I'm reading a lot of thread on this matter and I can't figure out: what's wrong with this phone internal memory?
HTC States 512MB Rom and 576MB RAM (can't put the link here 'cause I'm noob but you can google it), if I'm not wrong the Rom is the apps storage, right?
With DiskUsage I see 147MB of total internal storage memory (a recurrent number, but on the threads I read no one seems to care about the 365MB vanished like fog in the mouring), occupied for a good 90% by apps, cache and data.
I've the official last Froyo Update (I only rooted it with unrevoked and substituted the recovery but the ROM is the official one), and I've set on SD card all the apps that permit it.
Yes I know that I must install app2sd and I'm shure I will do it soon, but that is not the point.
The point is: please, someone can explain to me where I'm wrong in my calculations, or what bug or know issue I'm missing?
spile wrote: "Yes I think that until the memory leak in the contacts storage is fixed..." but again: even this search lead me to an endless list of topics in wich someone say: "Hey my contacts storage on HTC Desire is 40MB, how's that? " and someone other: "Use apps2sd 'cause HTC is bad".
Worst: that's not my case, my contacts storage state 3MB.
Again I know that in a way or another I'm ending this with apps2sd, but again I say it's not my point: my point is I want to undestand where is the problem and, most of all, if complaining directly to HTC is a waste o time that put me as the last one in a row of people condemned to ***** about HTC Desire's memory for the rest of their's life
Sorry for the long rant but I've done my search (at least I've tried, maybe I missed that one topic of revelations) and I want to put all the informations on the table so to not waste more time of yours ^^;;;
Thanks anyway

On second thoughts, it appears freeing space in /system,
won't really help /data much, so this would not help:

im using my own cooked rom, and have atleast 300 apps installed, and i have 58mb free internal storage with 22mb cache partition, 190mb system partition and 222mb data partition

100mb free after 144 apps installed. Have N1table for data partition of 200mb. And app2sd helps a bit. No need for data2ext
Teleported from my brain cells

I've installed about 20mb of apps (fb @ 4.8mb, music app 5mb, rest = 10x<1mb apps w/ no cache usage) yet still only have about 14mb. Somehow I'm missing 100mb ish on a RUU'd Desire. Annoying.

It did not vanish, the 365 mb is used by android system files and other stuff HTC throws into the phone. In theory, we only have 140+ mb to install apps.

So when I first got my HTC Desire and installing some applications I of course came across the annoying message telling me I am running low on space.
So I rooted and installed a ROM with AppstoSD, and was happy again. Now I am back to the same issue, keeps telling me I am low. Which is true because after rooting I installed a bunch more applications lol
So my phone says I have 147MB total to use for Applications and such. Currently around 13 to 16MB. Quite annoying.
So with future Android updates or even hacks will applications ever install and run and store everything from an SD card? Because this expensive device I am locked into for 3 years is going to get pretty crappy and annoying if I have to uninstall applications I want to install other ones...
Comments?
Well as a2sd just works by creating a symlink to the ext partition on the sd-card, yous should be able to simply create one for /data/data as well. Because those data foleders are still stored on the data prtition, and those are the ones taking up space.
I Found a guide at some point, but i can't seem to find it now, but try searching around.
I have been looking around, and no luck. Why I started this thead
Anyone else, ideas, know a way?
to make app2sd work you need an ext partition. to do that download rom manager for free from market and create one. i suggest if use to install lots of apps select 512mb partition, set swap to 0mb. but keep in mind before creating the partition you should backup all data from sdcard because it will be formatted to create the partition.
and by the way please edit title cause this is Nand memory that you are refering to.

And I clearly said I have AppstoSD working, it's just not enough.
My main question was simply, will in the future, apps2sd or whatever it will be called allow for applications to be installed, stored and run from the SD. If not my nice new phone is going to get quite annoying and useless.
if you say that you started with 147mb and now have 13-16mb and have app2sd, it means that you have a rom that supports app2sd but not aproperly created ext partition. that is why you are running low.
for example if you have a working EXT and still having left only 13mb on phone it means that you have installed aboout 300to500 apps. that is because although apps get installed on EXT but always leave a trace in phone memory(something like a shortcut).

It's not always just a trace!
/data/data is left on internal memory (for stability reasons) and some apps, for example Google Earth, take up an awful lot of space there.

That's an exaggeration although on AOSP ROMs, same everything except HTC additions (mainly Sense), I have 35-40MB free while on HTC 2.2 ROMs I'm always juggling between 15-20MB free. I have A2SD fully working, 112 apps on. I don't see it as a big issue for me because I only need approx 85 of them from day to day, but to have the rest on and not have to worry and keep deleting things to keep the phone working would be very handy. Nearly all the quality apps with great features require much memory (don't even ask me about Rockplayers update). Most of them are still using a good chunk of the internal memory even after being "installed on SD card" for some portion but the killers are apps like Adobe Flash, Maps, HTC_IME, Earth, SMS/MMS, cache, emails, bookmarks, widgets and so forth. In fact, I only keep 2-3 emails and a few bookmarks stored in the default applications for this reason.

[Q] Low Application Data Space after root... HELP!

I finally took the plunge and rooted my dInc using Unrevoked 3. Went smoothly, and confirmed I am rooted by running Titanium Backup. Did a full backup of apps and data.
However, now, and for the first time ever, I'm getting that blasted "Application data space is low. To free up... ". When I click on it, it just takes me to the running apps screen.
I have not installed any ROMs, kernels, or anything else. I ONLY rooted. That damn low data space icon is driving me nuts!
According to the Storage space menu, I have:
SD Card - Total Space 14.83 GB
Available Space 1.61 GB
Internal Phone Storage - Total Space 6.60 GB
Available Space 6.28 GB
Phone Memory: Total Space 748 MB
Available Space 556 MB
So, what's the problem? How can I resolve this? Thanks.

I've had that issue before, but I seemed to fix any problem like that with my rom (in the signature). It's stripped of bloated software, ect. Usually that app data space is low is due to the ram filled, at least in my experiences. I end all my current running processes and /or reboot, and the issue is resolved.
I'd think a custom rom shouldn't be needed to alleviate the low app data space issue. I was considering a rom, but I was hoping to resolve this issue before I ventured down that route.
I did delete some bloatware. Nothing critical - VZ Navigator, City ID, and... maybe one more.
Check the size of your HTC Mail and your Gmail contact caches. I used "clean dalvik cache" in titanium backup donate version and it opened up quite a bit of memory.
The fact that you rooted is probably just a coincidence. This is a known problem and you probably don't have as much memory as you think in the phone memory. You can also use App2SD to move more apps to your SD card but have to be careful with that.
I noticed your internal phone storage is almost unused. I have the same problem. Would be nice if there was an app to move apps to the internal phone storage.
Have fun with your new incredible. Try out Hyrda Kernals Stock undervolt kernal to start out with along with wireless tether to enjoy free wifi! I just did it on mine and it is awesome.

Available phone memory.....

The answer will probably be a yes but I want to make sure.....I partitioned my sd card to free up some hardware space and I ended up with 122mb on device.
My question is, do software updates load onto the phone memory? I flashed a keyboard, radio and icons off the card and now the memory has went down to 102mb.
Thanks in advance,
Paul.
It actually seems to be going down a few mb at a time, thought this **** would end after I binned the BlackBerry..........
You could of searched there is plenty of topics on this ...... when you use apps2sd+, /data/app/ and the dalvik cache are moved to the sd-ext, the /data/data/ directory remains on the device, this directory is used to store all app data, thats why your internal storage goes down
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Yes there is a small amount of internal space still used but not much.
You will be able to install a lot of apps untill you run out of space. Much more than before.
Another trick you could try that I just did is applying the custom MTD partitions mod (do a search in the development thread) and this will give you some more memory to play with (I have 70 apps installed and still have 108MB Free!)

[Q] Phone showing low internal storage but app2sd+ partition has plenty free

I'm using app2sd+ on my Desire with the Leedroid ROM. The ext3 partition on my SD card has over 500MB free space yet my Desire still reports low internal storage - 6MB and at one point last week it was completely full, ie. apps stopped syncing data as they couldn't write to the storage.
I have taken the SD card out of the phone and mounted it on my Linux computer to see how much space it's using:
Code:
/dev/mmcblk0p2 836M 245M 549M 31% /media/f74d2438-5eb6-4570-9ee3-fae2f7e5ef74
(where 549M is free space)
Code:
du -sh /media/f74d2438-5eb6-4570-9ee3-fae2f7e5ef74/*
105M /media/f74d2438-5eb6-4570-9ee3-fae2f7e5ef74/app
2,0M /media/f74d2438-5eb6-4570-9ee3-fae2f7e5ef74/app-private
122M /media/f74d2438-5eb6-4570-9ee3-fae2f7e5ef74/dalvik-cache
Anyone know what could be causing this, and how to get the phone to see how much space is really there?
Basically check if the android has moved any apps to the sd cards fat 32 partition by going to manage applications/SD card in settings
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
This why I dont like app2sd.
It has moved a handful of apps to the FAT32 partition on the SD card. But I don't understand why - I have tonnes of space on the ext3 partition that I created for app2sd+, why does it not see that space?
(I didn't want to use app2sd+ either but I have no choice due to the crappy amount of internal storage on the Desire)
It does it automatically so just move as much apps back to the phone as possible then run the a2sd reinstall command

what command is that out of interest?
also some apps automagically try and set themselves up to install to the fat32 partition - annoying... perhaps google should implement a way to choose where you want them installing, but i guess they think they are catering for the majority...
Once u have moved thwdpps from the fat 32 to the phone that command reruns the a2sd script movring app the apps on the phone to the extra partition
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Sorry I don't understand. If I try to move those apps back to the phone (internal storage) it won't let me because it claims there's not enough space available.
However as I showed in my first post there's plenty of free space on the ext3 partition on my SD card. That ext3 partition is supposed to be used by app2sd+ to extend the internal storage.
I'm not sure what a2sd reinstall has to do with it - I'm not using a2sd I'm using app2sd+ (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7473663&postcount=3)

You have this option in Spare parts for a year or so. I noticed it for the first time in October last year. But it only works for those apps which had hardcoded Froyo a2sd (fat32) capability.
Op, where is your davlik cache? Download diskusage and check what happens. With some 90 apps & stock hboot you should have some 90mb internal. I have about that with my setup from the sig and my 130mb davlik is on /data.
Hi,
In Diskusage->Appstorage shows 319MB for data and 314MB for Applications.
In /data Diskusage shows 132.9MB of data.
I have 5.04MB free internal storage.

Can you Please Post Questions in the Q&A forum Thanks
Moving to Q&A
I am tired searching months for solution... my Internal memory always comes to 10MB or less.
I have:
HTC Desire with LeeDrOiD GB V3.0.8.2 Bravo
Hopefully it use AP2SD+ right
My Titanium backup says:
System ROM: 262 MB (19,2 MB free)
Internal: 158 MB (16,1 MB free)
SD card: 7,23 GB MB (25,8 MB free) ... this is not problem, I just need to erase bunch of mp3, etc...
SD caRD (a2sd): 697 MB (508 MB free)
LeeDrOiD GB V3.0.8.2 Bravo - Nice room, a bunch of unusefull apps but small, probably not big deal.
I prefer my own apss:
music - Mixing
calendar - Busssiness calendar
RealCalc
ES File Explorer
TeamViewer... Alots of them use soo many Internal memory.
Nimbuz.. Also take too much
A long time ago I have erased flash app... Easy live with that. Always fighting with Google earth update to get it right - to have enough memory before update...
LOVE HTC Desire, but that memory... As you can see I am moding user, like to have my apps and right setup.
TO eassy it, to find solutions for me, some more info for you:
I was thinking about to get different ROM.
I think I can live without Sense - using Mail widget and news widged.. but I think it can be raplaced with other market apps... I liked go launcher EX, but didnt have memory space to play with it - therfore it was erased.
I was reading something about HTC allow more freelly deal with this HTC desire memory problem... Didnt find solutions yet.
The 'solution' I found was to sell my Desire and buy a Samsung galaxy 2.
The internal storage on the Desire is just too small for many users, and the complicated and unsupported hacks to expand it with SD card storage are buggy and error prone.

Yes, I was thinking about that. But I was choosing/looking for my phone soo hard and thinking that this is RIGHT form me... Unofrtunatelly I forgot about memory... My first touch screen phone... (right screen size.. not to big, not too expensive, but new technology- something better, good forum support...) I think you understand.
It is a bit hard for me to buy new one soo early. But I will have to.
OK, I take this as solution.
I ma strongly thinking about to get small or the smallest room which I can get...
Maybe Cyanogen
Any recomendations?
Redux 2 or dGB

Smallest rom you can get right now is dGB. It uses only 60 MB of /system.

Titanium or My Backup will do thing.
It is worth of trying and I recommend it if you want Sense ROM but you need good sd card. I had some lags so switched back to Redux 2.

Low memory, help/question

Hi guys,
I don't know what's happening with my gf's wildfire S. How much space should be left free after flashing a rom (with gapps)? I've tried couple and all I've got left is around 50MB from fresh install and around 30MB after auto updates. Is this normal?
I've done everything I could to free more space. Moved most apps to ext4 partition on a SD card but. Deleted a lot of unnecessary things but still she's got like 5MB space left on internal memory with 5 apps installed and moved to SD card.
WTF? She wants to kill me for messing with her phone and not helping.
I followed this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=45401294 tried couple of roms but no luck. As of now MarvellousSense][2.3.5 sense 2.1]( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2256576 ) is installed but same low memory problem. (((((((((((((

1. Using a "minimal" GApps package will help a little
2. The device has only 150MB internal storage. Even if you use mini Gapps you will not have more than ~80MB
3. To solve the problem just use a rom that is int2ext compatible. 512MB (Will be the new storage amount) is a good and reliable size for the ext partition (If you dont know about setting up the sd for int2ext --> google it as i'm tired of typing instructions for questions that are solved a houndred times...)
4. Stock rom int2ext compatible can be found LINK
5. Want a newer android version? CM 10.1 ran reliable for a long time on my WFS
6. MAKE SURE TO READ AND UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING BEFORE FLASHING
7. NEVER MESS UP YOUR GIRL'S DEVICE

I would suggest to try this ROM-- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=50428735&postcount=1404
It's odexed and has a 100 MB free space in /data after installation. BTW you will have to find some slim Gapps from somewhere as it does not have much /system memory free. Flashing Gapps have nothing to do with your visible internal memory. As system apps are stored in system partition(you can't see it as internal memory). And I would suggest to use Link2SD to move apps to 2nd partition of SDCard(you will have to create it but there are good tutorials like-- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1432459 ). With this configuration I have 87 MB free space after installing about 20 apps. So it should work. Best of luck.
