[Q] Red Triangle of death after OTA manual update attempt - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have an unbranded and rooted HTC Desire.
The latest OTA update downloaded but didnt install (probably because my phone is rooted). Therefore, I manually downloaded the latest OTA update (OTA_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.2-2.10.405.2_R_P_release8gn61bgo3rswcw) before attempting to install.
When I restart the phone (after taking the battery out), the white HTC splash screen appears but then restarts at that point again and again and again.
When I try to go into bootloader recovery, and attempt to restore a previously saved ROM from my SDcard, the phone goes to a white HTC splash screen before showing the red triangle.
I have pressed the 'volume +' and 'power' buttons that led me to the "Android system recovery <3e>' screen (it has blue writing). I then attempted the 'Apply sdcard: update.zip' but then it says (in yellow writing) in the last three lines:
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted
I am now stuck!! I screwed up and have spent hours trying to look for a solution all over the web.
Please can anyone help me?

Try to install a older rom orginal if you can worked for me i then installed the newer one and then rooted it

Did you rename the OTA file to update.zip? If not, that's the first thing to do
Although even flashing the OTA manually if you're rooted is still likely to **** your phone up

Ok, how can I go about renaming the OTA file to update.zip?
I'm assuming I will have to do this via DOS on my computer??

If you can not rename a file in windows or linux...don't even try rooting in the first place

That is quite a fail I'm afraid...

Seriously you should've never rooted when you have no idea what you're doing sorry.
The reason you can't boot is that the update is made for original non modified HTC roms. You should instead have downloaded an updated rooted stock rom from those forums.
The reason you now get those errors is that the update probably have been overwriting you rooted recovery with a stock one. The reason you could launch clockwork mod or install a Rom before was that your stock recovery had been modified to accept test keys, which you new one does not.
So now you can only install software signed by HTC. In order to recover you should flash a stock ruu and you should have a clean and fully working system
Edit: and it is no red triangle of death... It's simply the stock recovery screen.

Hi!
I did the same stupid thing (downloaded and installed the update from the phone prompt) and now I always come to the stock recovery screen (or red triangle of death).
I tried various things:
- change the name of the update to "update.zip" = "signature verification failed"
- get the stock rom, name it "PB99IMG.zip" and put it on the sdcard = doesn't get recognized on the boot screen "Loading...[PB99IMG.zip] No image!"
- get the stock rom, name it "update.zip" and try to install it on the stock recovery screen = "signature verification failed"
and nothing worked.
I'm really desperate for help, couldn't find any way to install a rom a recover my old one.
Does anyone have any advice? I'm grateful for anything!
Thanks in advance!

Did you call it PB99IMG.zip.zip? Also, is it the file extracted from the RUU?
You can't just rename an RUU file PB99IMG.zip and xpect it to wwork as it's not a ZIP file...

No, it is a zip.
Full name was "PB99IMG_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.zip" from here http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Bravo

Well then, you must be aware that Windows by default hides the extension of known files. So if the filename is displayed as PB99IMG.zip, it may in fact be PB99IMG.zip.zip, wherein the .zip part is hidden. Try renaming it as just PB99IMG. If the associated icon changes, name it back. If not, load this file once again to the root of card. Before doing that, format it as FAT32 once again.

I'd also suggest not using such an old file, I uploaded the 2.29.405.2 PB99IMG file a while back to shipped-roms so I suggest using that

Thanks, that was it. Stupid mistake.
But now after the installing process I get an error "Main Version is older! Update Fail!". So I guess I need the version of the rom I had installed, do I?
I already checked shipped-roms, but I couldn't find an older version of the zip. Or is there a way to install it with the exe, even though I can't turn on my phone properly?

No, just the opposite!
You need a newer one. Use the one Eddy suggested.

Worked like a charm!
Thanks a lot!

Glad it worked. You could've got the 2.29.405.5 one if you didn't wanna bother about the OTA update which will no doubt flag up at some point

[REQUEST] Stock 1.47 rom.zip

I need to return to an unrooted version of the phone. I'm no noob, but the RUU.exe won't work. I'm getting an error staying that my usb isn't connected. I'm just going to flash the rom.zip and boot into bootloader.
I can't extract the file, however. I'm on a mac. If anyone has the 1.47 rom.zip file (and not the 1.47 RUU), I would be very appreciative.
ahh sound like driver issues to me .. have you googled it ?
Yes. I have all of the appropriate drivers installed. I ran the 1.32 RUU a week and a half ago. The program is stupid.
This is an easy fix.
First clear your temporary directory (or as many of the files as you can) (Start, run, %tmp%
Next, open the RUU and let it load.
Then go back to the temporary directory and search for update.zip
You can use the rom.zip on your sd card to manually apply the update.
Let me know if this works
I'm uploading now. It'll be HERE soon.

did this for curiosity and there's a rom.zip and data1.cab each ~170mb with the cab being bigger. I am assuming it would be th rom.zip?
Yea, just rename it to update.zip.
I'll correct my last post.

Thank you all very much for your help. I ultimately ran SimpleRoot and then used Whitslack's guide to get back where I wanted to be. SimpleRoot did exactly what I needed it to do. Thanks again for all your help.
Hopefully, the RUU rom.zip file will be helpful for someone in the future.

[Q] Stock recovery with s-off?

Now that s-off is out and we don't need the PB31IMG.zip to be signed by HTC, is there a zip that will flash the stock recovery but leave everything else intact?
Thanks.

Why do you wasn't the stock recovery? You won't be able to do a nandroid.
I know. I want to have the 2.2 update as soon as it's out because I no longer have to worry about losing root permanently, but I don't really want to have to go through configuring everything again.
EDIT: Could I just take the stock PB31IMG.zip and remove everything but the recovery?
this is a good question. lots of people are wanting to do the ota thinking that since they have s-off they will still have root / custom recovery. we should set up a guide for everyone who is planning on doing this. personally I will just wait for a modified rom to be released... will probably come out before the ota hits anyway.
As I understand it:
Flash the stock recovery using the attached file.
Install the OTA like normal.
Use this image from Unrevoked to put ClockworkMod back on.
If the OTA removed root and busybox, put busybox on the SD card, then use this update.zip from here to restore root.
EDIT: I made a PB31IMG.zip to flash only the stock recovery. I'm attaching it here. I HAVE tested this on my phone.
you think the ota is going to allow custom recovery and root?
i'm skeptical but that would be nice.
It was my impression that with s-off we could use a PB31IMG.zip with HBOOT to put on whatever recovery we wanted regardless of anything the OTA does, and once we have a custom recovery on, we can make an update.zip with su and Superuser.apk.

Sorry, I should have clarified. This is not for people who have flashed a new ROM, it is JUST the stock recovery for people who have Clockwork and want to be able to flash the radio. Without s-off, these people would have had to flash the HTC-signed PB31IMG.zip, wiping everything on their phone. Anyone who wants to go back to stock 2.1 and get the OTA will still have to flash the official HTC one, which WILL remove CM6 and wipe all data. You can get the HTC-signed one here.

You are, of course, right. I'll update my post.
One thing I'm still worried about is that HTC might give us a new HBOOT without s-off in the OTA. What is the procedure for getting the URL of the update files once we are offered the OTA?
Ping: tchebb - Question about your stock recovery file
Can you tell me how you created your stock recovery "PB31IMG.ZIP" file?
It contains two files: recovery.img & android-info.txt
Were these files output from a compiler? I want to know how you made this ZIP file, if I may...
Thanks!

Thank you sir. I'm learning. I was curious about the android-info.txt file, and why the infomartion appears as it does in the file. You called it "standard" for the incredible. See below:
modelid: PB3120000
cidnum: VZW__001
mainver: 3.17.605.0 - comment: Just FYI, my DInc build is different: 3.16.605.0
hbootpreupdate:3
This will work with any *.img file that I choose to include in a PB31IMG.ZIP file? Do you think there will ever be a situation where these numbers would be different (for the DInc)? I ask because I'm still not sure what their purpose is in flashing. Do you know? I assume the bootloader needs them for some reason.

I have been trying to use the above referenced recovery image to restore the stock recovery and it doesn't seem to be working.
I installed unrevoked forever to set S-OFF and then placed the above file in the root of my SD card, booting into recovery and trying to flash the image just returns me to the ClockworkMod menu.
How can I reinstall the original stock recovery?

You do not flash this image from clockwork. Put it on the SD root, boot into HBOOT, and wait about 5 seconds. It will then ask you of you want to apply the update. Press volume up to install.

I tried that but it's not asking me if I want to apply the update, a message flashes by very quickly that I barely have time to read. Something like "No image or wrong Image" and then it returns to the HBOOT menu.

PB99IMG.zip that restores to WWE 2.2 (Froyo)?

Hey all,
I didn't know where to ask, so I'll try my luck here
I have a PB99IMG.zip that downgrade to 2.1 Android version and works great, but I would like one that will downgrade to a WWE 2.2 version.
It has to be PB99IMG.zip (rooted preferred, but isn't a must) because I need to use it if/when unavailable to get in recovery, and PB99IMG can be run from bootloader.
I tried downloading couple of WWEs and renaming them to PB99IMG.zip but it didn't work. Bootloader reads the file, but doesn't give me an option to install it.
Any suggestion?
Thanks.

I tried extracting this RUU with 7zip but it failed... I guess I'm doing something wrong :/
I'm uploading it to shipped-roms at the moment, check back there later. File name is:
PB99IMG_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.2_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_151783_signed.zip
I must say that you rock.
So, after this RUU appears on the shipped-roms, I download it, rename it to PB99IMG.zip and put it on my SD?
Yep, just remove everything except the PB99IMG from the file name
I don't recommend using this ROM for that purpose. I just flashed 2.29.405.2 with my goldcard and now I am stuck with a phone which cannot be rooted by unrevoked.
looks like HTC has patched the ROM to stop unrevoked from working.
I also tried fake flash to see if I can restore back. but no luck there either.
if you want a Foyo 2.2 PB99IMG file, I recommend you use 2.10.405.2 instead.
I rooted my phone on 2.29.405.2 first time, as I have with any other verison. You're doing something wrong

Guys just to clear up my concepts whenever i need to unroot.... all i need tot do is to put in the latest RUU file in zip form as mentioned in the thread and i will be back to stock froyo rom unrooted and ready to receieve OTA.... when gingerbread sense UI comes out?
i have the SLCD desire that came with factory installed Froyo and HBOOT 0.93 or 0.92 whichever it was
The ZIP I posted needs to be renamed PB99IMG.zip and copied to the SD card and then the phone turned on whilst holding power down - once in HBOOT it will then ask do you want to update and away you go
It will ONLY work on unbranded phones (those on x.xx.405.x ROMs out the box) unless you use a gold card

Did you try and apply an update to a rooted phone????
Well, if you're on bootloader screen it usually doesnt recognize your phone.
Last time I flashed a RUU i used fastboot mode. Start your phone with the "back key" held. Then start the RUU.
If you get something like a Model ID Error then, you will have to create a Goldcard to apply the RUU.
CAUTION: Before you flash any RUU, check if it's compatible with your SLCD or AMOLED Device. SLCD Devices are incompatible with certain RUUs, flashing a wrong one results in a semi-brick (display not working, but ROM functioning).
You must be aware of having the correct RUU.then try to enter fastboot, when it is loaded, plug in your cable, you must see that it turns to 'hboot usb plug'. If it does so, you can flash the original RUU, if it is the right one

The new clockwork uses .tar instead of .img files like the old one, so it wont detect old backups, all you need to do is downgrade to version 3 again and it'll detect your backup
What radio version do you have?

You need the attached file to downgrade clockwork.
Place it on the root of your SD card, then boot into your bootloader (volume down + power button) and accept the update.

Correction from 9:02 PM
Generally, you need to do three things before you turn S-ON.
1. (YOU PROBABLY ALREADY DONE THIS SO YOU CAN SKIP). You need to flash a custom recovery. You can use the same PC36IMG file that I gave you the first time.
2. You need to downgrade your radio (baseband only). Use the file from this link.
http://www.mediafire.com/?xlhm124ur4bnxln
Flash this file from your recovery and let it do its thing. Also, it is very important not to pull the battery during the flash, or it is a sure way to brick your phone permanently.
3. Then try the S-ON tool again.
Your phone may likely still read S-OFF. In that case, you will also need to update with the attached PC36IMG file (once you change the name) to turn S-ON.
Next you will need this PC36IMG file (once you change the name) to finish the unroot.

EDIT: From 2:11 PM
If that didn't work, then go to this link to download the fastboot drivers, then install them to your computer.
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/revolutionary
Boot your phone into the operating system, plug the phone to your computer, then turn on USB Debugging under Applications/Development.
Then download the RUU to your computer from this link
http://www.fileserve.com/file/TzDP8Je
Turn off the phone, then hold the volume down + power buttons at the same time. Hit the power button once the phone powers up and FASTBOOT is highlighted. It should now read FASTBOOT USB in red. Run the RUU from your computer and see if this works.
how do you run the RUU from the computer?

It's an exe file. Just double click on it.

A whole new phone? :-x
Sounds to me like you just got a bad file. Reflashing the linked above should've fixed your problem right up.
