[Q] Stock recovery with s-off? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Now that s-off is out and we don't need the PB31IMG.zip to be signed by HTC, is there a zip that will flash the stock recovery but leave everything else intact?
Thanks.

Why do you wasn't the stock recovery? You won't be able to do a nandroid.

I know. I want to have the 2.2 update as soon as it's out because I no longer have to worry about losing root permanently, but I don't really want to have to go through configuring everything again.
EDIT: Could I just take the stock PB31IMG.zip and remove everything but the recovery?

this is a good question. lots of people are wanting to do the ota thinking that since they have s-off they will still have root / custom recovery. we should set up a guide for everyone who is planning on doing this. personally I will just wait for a modified rom to be released... will probably come out before the ota hits anyway.

As I understand it:
Flash the stock recovery using the attached file.
Install the OTA like normal.
Use this image from Unrevoked to put ClockworkMod back on.
If the OTA removed root and busybox, put busybox on the SD card, then use this update.zip from here to restore root.
EDIT: I made a PB31IMG.zip to flash only the stock recovery. I'm attaching it here. I HAVE tested this on my phone.

you think the ota is going to allow custom recovery and root?
i'm skeptical but that would be nice.

It was my impression that with s-off we could use a PB31IMG.zip with HBOOT to put on whatever recovery we wanted regardless of anything the OTA does, and once we have a custom recovery on, we can make an update.zip with su and Superuser.apk.

Sorry, I should have clarified. This is not for people who have flashed a new ROM, it is JUST the stock recovery for people who have Clockwork and want to be able to flash the radio. Without s-off, these people would have had to flash the HTC-signed PB31IMG.zip, wiping everything on their phone. Anyone who wants to go back to stock 2.1 and get the OTA will still have to flash the official HTC one, which WILL remove CM6 and wipe all data. You can get the HTC-signed one here.

You are, of course, right. I'll update my post.

One thing I'm still worried about is that HTC might give us a new HBOOT without s-off in the OTA. What is the procedure for getting the URL of the update files once we are offered the OTA?

Ping: tchebb - Question about your stock recovery file
Can you tell me how you created your stock recovery "PB31IMG.ZIP" file?
It contains two files: recovery.img & android-info.txt
Were these files output from a compiler? I want to know how you made this ZIP file, if I may...
Thanks!

All I did was take the standard android-info for the incredible and zip it up with the recovery.img from the HTC signed PB31IMG.ZIP.

Thank you sir. I'm learning. I was curious about the android-info.txt file, and why the infomartion appears as it does in the file. You called it "standard" for the incredible. See below:
modelid: PB3120000
cidnum: VZW__001
mainver: 3.17.605.0 - comment: Just FYI, my DInc build is different: 3.16.605.0
hbootpreupdate:3
This will work with any *.img file that I choose to include in a PB31IMG.ZIP file? Do you think there will ever be a situation where these numbers would be different (for the DInc)? I ask because I'm still not sure what their purpose is in flashing. Do you know? I assume the bootloader needs them for some reason.

I have been trying to use the above referenced recovery image to restore the stock recovery and it doesn't seem to be working.
I installed unrevoked forever to set S-OFF and then placed the above file in the root of my SD card, booting into recovery and trying to flash the image just returns me to the ClockworkMod menu.
How can I reinstall the original stock recovery?

You do not flash this image from clockwork. Put it on the SD root, boot into HBOOT, and wait about 5 seconds. It will then ask you of you want to apply the update. Press volume up to install.

I tried that but it's not asking me if I want to apply the update, a message flashes by very quickly that I barely have time to read. Something like "No image or wrong Image" and then it returns to the HBOOT menu.

What are you trying to do?
I'm not sure what your goals were by flashing the PC36IMG you chose too, that is a stock build. Before you do things with your phone, make sure you do aloooooooooooot of reading/forum surfing to make sure you are doing what you want.
Go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715915 and download this PC36IMG.zip and then flash that...it will leave you with a a rooted (albeit w/out superuser which you can download separately) 1.47 build (upgrade to current radio/wimax/rom from there)

Is it not loading the PC36IMG.zip at all? Your memory card needs to be an SDHC or it wont load the PC36IMG.zip.

[Q] Original stock rom update.zip file

Hey I need some help. I have been trying to reformat my phone with the original stock ROM but I cannot get the RUU to work. Every time that I try to use the RUU executable file to reinstall the original ROM it can't detect my phone. I really need help with this my phone is incapacitated right now. If someone could help me find a rom that I could use here that would be fantastic. Thanks
what happened that your phone is not working? are you rooted, s-off? what rom where u on b4?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
It is S-Off and I am not sure if it is still rooted. I have been switching back and forth from the cyanogen mod and the stock rom, and I tried doing a system restore on the stock rom and it didn't really change anything but I don't think it can do root things anymore. It has been asking me to do a system update but every time I try to install it it fails.

Your failed update is probably due to your still having a modified recovery.
Something that could work for you:
>run the .exe for the RUU, then minimize it.
>start/run/type "%temp%" in the dialog box.
>search the output for rom.zip
>move the rom.zip to your sdcard and run it from hboot.
this should go through the rom installation and restore your rom. it's worked a couple times for me when I messed up recoveries.
Good luck!
BTW do you have HTC sync installed on your computer? not having that might be missing the driver for your phone.....just a thought
I tried extracting rom.zip out of the temp directory but the file was corrupted. Maybe the RUU doesn't work at all? I don't know. If you can get me a rom.zip that isn't corrupted that would be fantastic. Thanks!

Make sure SD card is formatted to fat32. Rename it so it is PB31IMG.zip(If on Windows and have fileextensions turned off rename it PB31IMG. The .zip will already be added.)
Put on root of SD card meaning not in any folders and boot into hboot. The phone will ask you to update, select yes and wait for it to ask you if you want to reboot.

To get s-on you need to have CW recovery. Wish you would have mentioned this before. You need to flash clockwork recovery again then apply the s-on. Then re run the previous PB31IMG.
Wow this is so freaking nuts. Ok so I tried running the S-ON .zip file that they provide using CW Recovery. Problem is now unrEVOked forever doesn't support my radio, radio-1.00.00.02.09. I will try to contact them unless you all have another idea. Thanks for your help so far!
If your still s-off you can flash a supported radio through Hboot much like the get back to stock PB31IMG you just ran. But if you ran the one I provided earlier you should be on a .92 hboot and a 2.15.00.07.28 radio, which is supported for s-on.
Here, download one of the ones that S-ON if compatible with and put it on the root of your sd card, and boot into hboot. Be sure its called PB31IMG.zip, or else it won't work.

Ok so I tried updating to a radio compatible with the unrEVOked S-ON update. When I try to run the file the recovery screen blacks out and then goes back to the main menu. It doesn't give me any output as to why that happened or if it even did anything.
You should flash RUUs from within HBOOT, not Recovery. An RUU includes everything from radio, to ROM, to recovery.
You can still do this with S-ON, since it is signed.
I'm not on the RUU I know how to install that. I need to use the S-ON .zip file that i got from unrevoked.com

You don't flash radios in recovery you flash radios in HBOOT. Make sure you rename the file to the proper filename then it should automatically detect it and install it.
Again like I said before, if you simply install the RUU from within HBOOT that would revert everything back to stock including the radio. Then you could run S-ON from within the stock recovery. But if you want to do it the other way so that you run the S-ON patch from within ClockWork that's fine too.
Haha well i have not explained things properly so let me explain where I am at right now very clearly.
Right now I have HBOOT updated using an RUU with a radio that unrEVOked forever works with. I have rooted and installed Clockwork Recovery. Now, I go to install the S-ON using Clockwork and then the screen blacks out and it returns to the Clockwork main menu without giving me any output.
Hopefully that clears things up
Ok sorry I thought you had trouble flashing the radio.
Yes I do believe the S-ON patch is installed within recovery, I just did it a few days ago and it worked fine. I was using the 7.28 radio. I believe I just did a normal .zip install in clockwork.
This sounds stupid, but make sure you're not pushing the power button. In ClockWork you have to push the optical pad to make selections, it's unlike HBOOT. I can't think of anything else.

[Solved] How do I restore to stock(recovery and rom no root) with an OTA Update?

So I was wondering how I can return my HTC Desire (CDMA) to stock. I have an OTA update that I got from my friend's desire I also have a nandroid backup of the original sense.
Is there any way to convert the OTA update so it is a flashable zip I can use on CWM?
The other thing is can anyone help me if I post the update?

Flash the downgrader from Alpharev (if necessary), then either use the appropriate RUU or restore your nandroid backup from recovery.

If I had an RUU that would make it simple but all I have is an OTA update. And I saw somewhere that I can't really flash an OTA update with CWM. Also restoring the nandroid from recovery would look stock but it will still have root. I am just trying to get it back to factory stock rom and recovery with no root.
Looking at the files in the OTA there is a firmware.zip that has a new hboot, recovery and radio. But I am just not sure and where to start for creating a flashable zip with the OTA.
I uploaded the OTA I have if anyone can help me create a flashable zip or just tell me what to do. http://www.4shared.com/file/0b8ls5sf/OTA_Bravo_C_S_UTSTARCOM_WWE-Ge.html
Before you do that... ask yourself what could possibly be the most important question before you take the chance of breaking your phone: "What's the point?"

No. That's impossible.. Well there was a way, if you'd thought about it earlier...to create a backup after a revolutionary S-off, then do whatever you want with the phone..and then finally when you wanted to restore, you could have restored the unrooted backup, then stock recovery and then finally Stock Hboot in that order... But now, there will no way other than to use an RUU of another carrier.

Well I do have a unrooted backup but the only recovery that I have is the one in the OTA. Would it be possible to install that recovery and still be able to do an update using the OTA file?
Best course of action would be to restore your backup, followed by the following in order:
Prerequisites: S-off, Goldcard, An RUU confirmed to work with your device (Any region/WWE).
Steps:
Restore your backup with CWM. Ensure that it boots.
Extract recovery.img from the stock RUU (which should be working on your device normally)
In fastboot mode, and after going to the dir containing fastboot.exe (from sdk):
Code:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot reboot-recovery
Ensure that recovery works.
Then, using the hboot.img from the RUU,
Code:
fastboot flash hboot hboot.img
(the hboot extension may not be .img in the zip. Probably it's .nb0. Rename it)
Dont use OTA files at any point. You can update with it after successfully returning to stock with your backup.
Flashing hboot should be the last thing you do..Once the stock hboot makes you S-on, fastboot commands become inaccessible to you.
Thanks for the info, I think I am finally on track now. I was able to restore back to stock sense and was finally able to fix my mms issues(ro.cid problems after using unrevoked). Now I just need to figure out which ruu to take the recovery and hboot from.
I did find the alltel bravo_c ruu on shipped-roms.com hopfully that will work. Is there any sure way to know if the recovery will work or not on my phone?
I am with GCI its a local carrier in Alaska. I remember from my hero that alltel and my carrier had some similarities, along with cellsouth
Edit:
I just finished downloading the Alltel RUU and the HBOOT looks to be the same version. Also the Radio listed in the file name is the same as I currently have.
So I guess it is pretty safe to say that this recovery and hboot will work with my phone right?
The only sure way is to flash it. However make sure that the RUU is relatively new and has a version number greater than 1.2 and that you flash GSM one if you're on GSM, and CDMA if it's a CDMA phone.
bravoc=CDMA
bravo=GSM
Dont mix these...otherwise you'll end up with a black screen and a panic attack
There's another method to find if RUU is compatible, which is to open the zip and read the text file inside..See my Desire Unbricking guide and Goldcard FAQ link
Well I got it all back to stock, I still have s-off but everything else is stock and the latest FW my carrier pushed out.
I was having a problem using fastboot to flash the recovery so I just made a PB99IMG.zip to flash the recovery then everything else(hboot radio) everything is working fine thanks for all the help!

I'm so thankful that cmlusco had these simple words listed here. I was trying without success to flash a recovery via hboot.92 to no avail. I am s-off and rooted running tinys cm10.1. The problem started when i wanted to use twrp as a recovery. I tried installing that in android itself with goomanager. It said it was successful so tried to reboot into recovery. no dice. it now doesn't even have cwm recovery which was what i was trying to replace. it just goes back into hboot. so i thought, "ok, i'll just adb it" again either with shell in android or via fastboot in hboot it says remote failed. this one line he just wrote tells me that despite everything i have, i cannot install via hboot. The only thing that works is having a pb31img file to install it. the problem is, most recoveries come in .img. so I thought i could just repackage it as a zip and use the txt from another twrp i had previously gotten to work by way of a pb31img and create my own new pb31img with the newest version (the old one i had was already made by someone else and installs flawlessly). basically now i'm curious if i should just ask how to make the newest twrp into a proper pb31img file to flash (since i know this works) or is there an easy way to upgrade hboot.092 to 1.07? Any help on either of these or both subjects would be greatly appreciated. Just for the record cmlusco, am i right in thinking the reason i can't fastboot flash my recovery is because my loader is locked somehow despite being rooted and s-off? will upgrading to hboot 1.07 enable all of what i want to do? Also, what's the best way to go about doing this? I have everything i need backed up so no worries there. Thanks in advance to any and all help!

You don't even need to go through all that trouble. Just use the PB31IMG.zip here:
PB31IMG.zip - 3.61 MB
It's also in the TWRP thread on one of the last few pages, TWRP 2.4.1.0.

Correct you can not fastboot flash unless your bootloader is unlocked. Since your s-off you can update the bootloader by flashing this file http://dinc.does-it.net/Hboots/Hboot_1.07/PB31IMG.zip, thru hboot. Once updated, you can unlock it and then flash img files with fastboot.
However, here is the TWRP 2.4.1.0 PB31IMG.zip http://dinc.does-it.net/Recoveries/TWRP_2.4.1.0/PB31IMG.zip, if you dont want to update the bootloader. You may need to flash it two or three times to get it to take.

Thanks to you and tiny for such a quick and simple response. pb31img used and updated perfectly! Just curious, cmlusco, in your signature i noticed you on hboot 1.07 but it's locked. Any particular reason for having it locked? I have yet to update mine but i did download and organize the pb31 hboot img you gave me for possible future use ( if i feel the need). Other than the aformentioned advantage of flashing hboot via fasboot and adb, is there any other advantage of hboot 1.07? Thanks again guys, you make my life easier.

Not really, S-OFF should get you what you need. You only miss the ability to flash via fastboot without an unlocked HBOOT. PB31IMG.zip works fine with S-OFF.

[Q] Restore Inc1 for warranty return

I have a Incredible 1 ( s-off )
I have to restore to stock
for in warranty return.
I used unrevoked3
to s-off.
I have a GB RUU zip.
can I flash that to restore
the phone to how it was?
I need to set the s-off
back to s-on though?
Wont the RUU replace
my recovery with the stock one?
Do I use fastboot to change the flag?
Do I reflash the custom recovery
to flash the s-on.zip?

First you need to flash the froyo radio thru hboot, and then a custom recovery if you already went to stock. Then flash the s-on patch thru recobery, then do the latest ruu thru hboot. That will leave you s-on and fully stock.
can you give me a url for a radio only hboot type zip?
the phone is running ics plus and is s-off.
the hboot & radio is ics the rom is ICS+,
recovery is CWM.
a lot of the very old radios and other custom things were on
mediafire and unreachable. The referenced threads return
404 errors.
I should then hboot flash that, then fastboot flash cwm to recovery
flash the s-on.zip, then flash the s-on zip.then flash the final full
ruu zip in hboot to reset to a stock version that VZW wont give
me headaches over..the last official ICS ruu zip should be fine.
I'm guessing if I can find an RUU zip for ICS, that flashing the
s-on.zip in recovery, then flashing the ICS RUU zip (PB31IMG.zip)
in hboot, should leave the phone s-on, locked, stock ICS everything,
which VZW should be happy with since the RMA issue is hardware
related.
I don't know where to find that (ICS RUU zip) either though
thanks

There is no official ics for the incredible only gingerbread. We never got an update to ics.
OK so I need a GB RUU zip?
My intent is to restore the phone for warranty return.
Currently its s-off, locked, ICS Plus ROM, CWM recovery.
I do have the unrevoked-forever-s-on.zip file and a
PB31IMG.zip RUU file (not sure what version of
the OS its for though).,
A listing of it is attached.
its android-info.txt reads:
modelid: PB3120000
cidnum: VZW__001
mainver: 4.08.605.2
hbootpreupdate:3

Looks like froyo. Here is exactly what you need to do.
Flash the froyo radio http://dinc.does-it.net/Radios/2.15.00.07.28/PB31IMG.zip, thru hboot.
Then flash cwm http://dinc.does-it.net/Recoveries/CWM_5.0.2.0/PB31IMG.zip, thru hboot.
Then enter recovery and flash this s-on patch http://downloads.unrevoked.com/forever/current/unrevoked-forever-son.zip.
Then flash the latest ruu we have 4.08.605.15 http://dinc.does-it.net/Stock_Images/4.08.605.15/PB31IMG.zip, thru hboot.
Then you will be s-on, unrooted, and complete stock.
perfect thanks
I got the parts ... placed on a microsd
Worked perfectly

No there is no ruu for 605.19 yet. Use to be a guy named football who use to get us all of our ruu's, but i think he moved on or can no longer get them.
You can try taking this update file http://dinc.does-it.net/Stock_Image...WE_4.08.605.19-4.08.605.15_release_305224.zip, renaming it update.zip and placing it in your sdcard in no folders. Then boot to hboot, it might find the file and say update gift and install it.
If it dosent find it select recovery, then hold vol up and power till a menu appears. Then select install update.zip.
If that still dosent work you may need to do a factory reset from hboot first, and then try again right after with the update.zip
OK I wanted to re-root my incredible. I can't find the unrevoked modified driver. It has been crossed out and getting 404 not found. I wanted to know if anyone knows how I can downgrade to froyo so I can s-off my incredible again. Or is there any Macintosh walkthrough? Mac is my main desktop if I use windows it would be with virtual machine.

Sorry i know nothing about mac's. Unrevoked no longer works on 2.3.4. Here is a guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506258
Here is the unrevoked driver if you still want it http://dinc.does-it.net/Unrevoked/UnrEVOked_Modified_Usb_Driver.zip
Thanks! I'll try it this weekend.
