Only benefit is that you can unlock it, and are then able to fastbot flash recoveries and boot images.

I'm so thankful that cmlusco had these simple words listed here. I was trying without success to flash a recovery via hboot.92 to no avail. I am s-off and rooted running tinys cm10.1. The problem started when i wanted to use twrp as a recovery. I tried installing that in android itself with goomanager. It said it was successful so tried to reboot into recovery. no dice. it now doesn't even have cwm recovery which was what i was trying to replace. it just goes back into hboot. so i thought, "ok, i'll just adb it" again either with shell in android or via fastboot in hboot it says remote failed. this one line he just wrote tells me that despite everything i have, i cannot install via hboot. The only thing that works is having a pb31img file to install it. the problem is, most recoveries come in .img. so I thought i could just repackage it as a zip and use the txt from another twrp i had previously gotten to work by way of a pb31img and create my own new pb31img with the newest version (the old one i had was already made by someone else and installs flawlessly). basically now i'm curious if i should just ask how to make the newest twrp into a proper pb31img file to flash (since i know this works) or is there an easy way to upgrade hboot.092 to 1.07? Any help on either of these or both subjects would be greatly appreciated. Just for the record cmlusco, am i right in thinking the reason i can't fastboot flash my recovery is because my loader is locked somehow despite being rooted and s-off? will upgrading to hboot 1.07 enable all of what i want to do? Also, what's the best way to go about doing this? I have everything i need backed up so no worries there. Thanks in advance to any and all help!

You don't even need to go through all that trouble. Just use the PB31IMG.zip here:
PB31IMG.zip - 3.61 MB
It's also in the TWRP thread on one of the last few pages, TWRP 2.4.1.0.

Correct you can not fastboot flash unless your bootloader is unlocked. Since your s-off you can update the bootloader by flashing this file http://dinc.does-it.net/Hboots/Hboot_1.07/PB31IMG.zip, thru hboot. Once updated, you can unlock it and then flash img files with fastboot.
However, here is the TWRP 2.4.1.0 PB31IMG.zip http://dinc.does-it.net/Recoveries/TWRP_2.4.1.0/PB31IMG.zip, if you dont want to update the bootloader. You may need to flash it two or three times to get it to take.

Thanks to you and tiny for such a quick and simple response. pb31img used and updated perfectly! Just curious, cmlusco, in your signature i noticed you on hboot 1.07 but it's locked. Any particular reason for having it locked? I have yet to update mine but i did download and organize the pb31 hboot img you gave me for possible future use ( if i feel the need). Other than the aformentioned advantage of flashing hboot via fasboot and adb, is there any other advantage of hboot 1.07? Thanks again guys, you make my life easier.

Not really, S-OFF should get you what you need. You only miss the ability to flash via fastboot without an unlocked HBOOT. PB31IMG.zip works fine with S-OFF.

HBOOT 1.76.0007 will only boot HTC signed images.
If you can get into normal OS of the phone there is a way.
You can use flashrec to get a custom recovery image on it.
Follow these instrcutions from the Unlockr:

I can't get the new recovery since my build can't except adb or fastboot boot. Is their away to update the hboot other than that?
Any one success in using fastboot to boot the recovery image in ruu mode as show in

It doesn't work in RUU mode. I have tried all ways. I try flashing hboot with zip file and with img file directly.
Every time ERROR - <<writing 'hboot'... INFOsignature checking... FAILED (remote: 12 signature verify fail)>>.
I have tried flashing recovery to patched with the same ERROR occurred. Also boot command in RUU mode with patched recovery doesn't work.
Have you guys tried using the latest flashrec to get a custom recovery on the phone?

what happened that your phone is not working? are you rooted, s-off? what rom where u on b4?

It is S-Off and I am not sure if it is still rooted. I have been switching back and forth from the cyanogen mod and the stock rom, and I tried doing a system restore on the stock rom and it didn't really change anything but I don't think it can do root things anymore. It has been asking me to do a system update but every time I try to install it it fails.

Your failed update is probably due to your still having a modified recovery.
Something that could work for you:
>run the .exe for the RUU, then minimize it.
>start/run/type "%temp%" in the dialog box.
>search the output for rom.zip
>move the rom.zip to your sdcard and run it from hboot.
this should go through the rom installation and restore your rom. it's worked a couple times for me when I messed up recoveries.
Good luck!
BTW do you have HTC sync installed on your computer? not having that might be missing the driver for your phone.....just a thought
I tried extracting rom.zip out of the temp directory but the file was corrupted. Maybe the RUU doesn't work at all? I don't know. If you can get me a rom.zip that isn't corrupted that would be fantastic. Thanks!

Make sure SD card is formatted to fat32. Rename it so it is PB31IMG.zip(If on Windows and have fileextensions turned off rename it PB31IMG. The .zip will already be added.)
Put on root of SD card meaning not in any folders and boot into hboot. The phone will ask you to update, select yes and wait for it to ask you if you want to reboot.

To get s-on you need to have CW recovery. Wish you would have mentioned this before. You need to flash clockwork recovery again then apply the s-on. Then re run the previous PB31IMG.
Wow this is so freaking nuts. Ok so I tried running the S-ON .zip file that they provide using CW Recovery. Problem is now unrEVOked forever doesn't support my radio, radio-1.00.00.02.09. I will try to contact them unless you all have another idea. Thanks for your help so far!
If your still s-off you can flash a supported radio through Hboot much like the get back to stock PB31IMG you just ran. But if you ran the one I provided earlier you should be on a .92 hboot and a 2.15.00.07.28 radio, which is supported for s-on.
Here, download one of the ones that S-ON if compatible with and put it on the root of your sd card, and boot into hboot. Be sure its called PB31IMG.zip, or else it won't work.

Ok so I tried updating to a radio compatible with the unrEVOked S-ON update. When I try to run the file the recovery screen blacks out and then goes back to the main menu. It doesn't give me any output as to why that happened or if it even did anything.
You should flash RUUs from within HBOOT, not Recovery. An RUU includes everything from radio, to ROM, to recovery.
You can still do this with S-ON, since it is signed.
I'm not on the RUU I know how to install that. I need to use the S-ON .zip file that i got from unrevoked.com

You don't flash radios in recovery you flash radios in HBOOT. Make sure you rename the file to the proper filename then it should automatically detect it and install it.
Again like I said before, if you simply install the RUU from within HBOOT that would revert everything back to stock including the radio. Then you could run S-ON from within the stock recovery. But if you want to do it the other way so that you run the S-ON patch from within ClockWork that's fine too.
Haha well i have not explained things properly so let me explain where I am at right now very clearly.
Right now I have HBOOT updated using an RUU with a radio that unrEVOked forever works with. I have rooted and installed Clockwork Recovery. Now, I go to install the S-ON using Clockwork and then the screen blacks out and it returns to the Clockwork main menu without giving me any output.
Hopefully that clears things up
Ok sorry I thought you had trouble flashing the radio.
Yes I do believe the S-ON patch is installed within recovery, I just did it a few days ago and it worked fine. I was using the 7.28 radio. I believe I just did a normal .zip install in clockwork.
This sounds stupid, but make sure you're not pushing the power button. In ClockWork you have to push the optical pad to make selections, it's unlike HBOOT. I can't think of anything else.
Alright you guys I'm not fully sure where to start but here we go. I had my EVO in 2.3.3 for quite a few months and the other day I tried to root it. I installed Revolutionary and I was almost done all I had to do was flash the recovery but no matter what I did I could not get it to work, it simply would not read off my sd card. So me being the noob that I am I thought upgrading to 2.3.5 would give me a clean slate and allow me to try a different method of rooting. But every tutorial I read about rooting 2.3.5 dealt with HBOOT being in 2.15-2.18 but Revolutionary is still on my phone and that left me with S-OFF HBOOT 6.16.1002. So the break down of all this is:
-I currently have an EVO 4G in 2.3.5
-With Revolutionary giving me HBOOT 6.16.1002 S-OFF
-I have no option that I know of to still root my phone
If ANYONE can give me a thorough step by step tutorial on how to still root my EVO I'd be beyond grateful. Thanks and sorry for the long post.
i have seen it in the past, but google how to manually flash the recovery through adb/fastboot.
Also you can download the sprint ruu software to restore ur hboot to an earlier version i believe, but im not positive, im just assuming so since it does change radio versions and such.
---------- Post added at 07:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:26 PM ----------
try using unrevoked as it may help you as it relys on radio version. Ive used it with success every time
Did you try redownloading the recovery file. Could of been a bad download?
You did rename it to PC36IMG right?
Also your phone is now s-off so thats a good thing. All you need to do is flash a recovery, make a nandroid backup. Then your off to flashing roms and kernels and then off to flashaholics anonymous! Lol

Can I still flash pc36img on 2.3.5???
Yes that is still what you call it.
As was mentioned you can get a recovery.img file and flash it through fastboot if you have SDK set up already.
I have had bad luck in walking people through these two steps. It is very hard to be sure it is right when not there in person.
I would suggest Amon Ra 2.3, his thread also has a pretty walk through on the different methods.
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
Your phone is already rooted so don't worry about trying to get that. It is already unlocked. First you need to get a custom recovery. Download this file:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/0d1pir6ea2yqp0y/bRcbIfF2J1/PC36IMG-Amon-v3.11.zip
Rename it to exactly PC36IMG.zip (!!it is case sensitive!!). Place it on the main directory of your SD card (not in any folders). Pull battery out and put back in. Power on phone by holding in the volume- and power button until the phone boots to bootloader. It will automatically scan and find the file and ask you to apply. Say yes. Now you will have a custom recovery to flash a rom.
Wut he said ^^^^
When I tried the new OTA with a new Incredible I got off of eBay (not rooted or tampered with) it kept messing up half way through and causing my phone to constantly reboot. I restored my phone but when I leave it plugged in with 3G on the OTA messes up my phone again.
I don't have root access so ES Explorer can't delete the .zip in the security folder to stop the OTA.
I've been trying to downgrade the HBOOT and get it to 2.3.3 but it won't work.
I either want it to be full stock or gain S-OFF so I can put CM9 on there. I have HBOOT .98 and can't get it to downgrade.
So, I tried following the following:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1298990
Everything worked fine up until near the end. It says "remote: 99 unknown fail". (SEE 1ST IMAGE)
*NOTE, ERASING CACHE WILL WORK. JUST DIDN'T THIS TIME. I'VE TRIED THIS SUCCESSFULLY UP UNTIL THE REMOTE 99 FAIL*
http://www.youtube.com/watch?featur...v=CgIYFGcVimU&annotation_id=annotation_395071
It's still 2.3.4, Sense 2.1.
My phone is Unlocked but still S-ON. I can't get rid of S-ON no matter what I try and do.
See 2nd image for what my HBOOT looks like.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong and what steps I need to follow at this point?
Also, can I flash CM9 and delete bloatware even with S-ON?
Thanks!
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like the phone was unlocked through the HTC Dev Unlock tool. Have you tried relocking using that?
Sent from my Incredible 2 using xda app-developers app
To my knowledge I didn't use that. Just what is listed on these links.
Where can iI find this program and try to relock?
You need to relock the bootloader before pursuing s-off.
to relock bootloader
Navigate to your adb & fastboot folder
Code:
adb remount
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot devices
fastboot oem lock
Then you should be able to downgrade and s-off.
I cant boot back into the phone.

I locked the bootloader and now it just will not boot into the phone. I tried to go into recovery but it just reboots.
Did I just mess up my phone?

You need to relock the bootloader before pursuing s-off.
to relock bootloader
Navigate to your adb & fastboot folder
Code:
adb remount
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot devices
fastboot oem lock
Then you should be able to downgrade and s-off.

Thank you! I actually decided to stick with stock. The new OTA actually worked this time around so I have no issues. IF ICS ends up never coming out, I'll eventually root. I really enjoy Cyanogenmod but for now stock feels safe for me.
You have no idea how much I truly appreciate this. I've been frustrated for a week. Searching all over the internet and doing everything in my power to fix it. All it took.. was that! THANK YOU!
Your welcome...
Now I have no stock recovery. It's a phone image and a red exclamation point. It then boots e3 and says something like "E: can't open cache/recovery/command"
How can I regain stock recovery?
Sent from my ADR6350 using xda app-developers app
Download the gingerbread RUU located http://minus.com/mvivow#1
I recommend renaming before downloading it.
rename it PG32IMG
Be careful with windows because it might rename it as PG32IMG.zip.zip. It won't work.
Move it to the sdcard
reboot into bootloader and allow the update. Its a signed RUU, so it should work.
It says "Main Version is older! Update fail"
Is there a RUU yet for the latest 6.xxxx OTA version?
I used the HTCDev tool to unlock again. At that point I was able to flash an .img of clockwork mod recovery.
When I re-locked I could no longer access Recovery. It said ***SECURITY WARNING*** and would not enter it.
I unlocked again and could use recovery, which is what I'm doing right now.
Am I not allowed to use Recovery with a locked phone?
Also, if I leave my phone unlocked, IF and WHEN there might be an ICS OTA for the Inc 2, can I still download and install while being unlocked?
Thanks!
It would be less confusing if you used the same user name on all the forums you post on.

I unlocked the phone again and can now use Recovery. I will stay like this I suppose.

Sorry dude.
Here's what is happening now... let me re-clarify.
So I had several issues caused by the latest INC 2 OTA. After the OTA messed up my phone I followed several threads online to downgrade to 2.3.3. After I did this, I updated back to 2.3.4 and then did the new OTA. It worked.
When I did this, "recovery" disappeared in the bootloader.
I eventually unlocked my phone again and was able to flash a custom recovery.img to get clockwork mod recovery back on. Everything was going smoothly!
I then entered recovery and accidentally restored a previous backup (version 5.xxxxx which would power off due to the OTA messing it up). So I immediately did a factory reset.
After this, the Radio is 1.09.01.0312. Every time I boot up it gets stuck on the white HTC screen. I've tried clearing cache, formatting system and then doing a factory reset. It still is the same.
To my knowledge this current radio is the radio for the new OTA (6.xxxxxx). My phone thinks it's software is still 5.xxxxxx due to the accidental restore.
I guess the radio I need ends in .1111. Would not having this radio cause this issue? I downloaded the radio but it says I have to be S-OFF to install it.
I am currently unlocked and S-ON.
Am I screwed or is there anything I can do to fix this?
I can only Fastboot and use CMD prompts. I don't even care if it's a custom rom at this point. Anything I can do to restore the phone.
Please and thank you.
EDIT: Also, PG32IMG files will not work. If I go to manually install it says E: Can't open sdcard/PG32IMG.zip (BAD)
Nor will it go through when I boot it up in the bootloader. I tried this for the version 5.xxxxxx. Do I need to wait for a 6.xxxxxx officiall RUU PG32IMG to come out? I haven't seen one yet.
when you see the red exclamation point press power button and volume up at same time, will put you in stock recovery
Is there ANYONE that can possibly help be fix my phone? I'm still stuck in the white HTC boot screen.
I can only load up in the bootloader.
***UNLOCKED***
VIVO_W XB SHIP S-ON RL
RADIO-01.09.01.0312
eMMC-boot
I need to install the latest software. Is there a RUU yet for the latest 6.xxxx software yet as a PG32IMG?
Any steps to successfully do this would be appreciated.
Could someone with the stock software do a backup, zip the file and send it to me? that way I could put it in the sd/clockworkrecovery/backup and try to make it work.
Thank you.
EDIT: ***HERE IS THE FIX THAT WORKED FOR ME***
Here is how I fixed it: I suggest all others with my issue try this...
Flash the boot.img from this rom: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1737494
THEN went into recovery > factory reset > clear cache > wipe dalvik > install zip from SD > install
If you need addition details, how to flash, etc. they can be found here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28262673#post28262673) where I was also given help.
I'm user "telecastertunes" on there.
Good luck!
I am leaving the original post below so people can see it. I corrected the issue with some great help from people here! Thank you. The radio (1.09.01.0622) was bad. I flashed a new one and all is good.
I do have one more question. I need to root now. I tried to flash an su zip through TWRP and it failed. The Incredible 2 is on 2.3.3 (used tacoroot to downgrade from 2.3.4 and revolutionary) with TWRP 2.3.3 installed.
What is the best way for me to go about rooting? After root I assume I'll use the same method through TWRP to flash a custom rom (probably a Cyanogenmod). Am I correct in my thinking?
Thank you in advance!!!!
Original post:
I am helping a friend with his HTC Incredible 2. Helping may not be the best choice of words.
Long story short --- he was on android 2.3.4 and wanted to root. He called me.
I used Tacoroot to downgrade to 2.3.3 and the Revolutionary (windows version) to obtain Beta Key and installed CWM.
Apparently this method does not properly install CWM and I have a bootloop when I try to power on the phone. I wish that would have come to my attention sooner.
I finally was able to flash (command prompt) TWRP. I used the image file marked 2.3.3.0 because that matches the android version of the phone. I am not sure if that matters.
Still ... I can get into TWRP. However, the bootloop still persists. I think I need to flash something using TWRP, but I am not sure.
What next? He is ok with flashing a custom rom. Is that what needs to be done? Can I flash the stock rom again? Does it matter which?
Any help is appreciated!
Also, In the (white screen) HBoot recovery screen a quick script is run in bootloader saying something along the lines of no image or wrong image.
With wonderful advice form people here I flashed a new radio through hboot and the bootloop is gone!!! I have updated the original post with one last question about TWRP and root. Thank you very much for your help!
